Coffee Break: Souper Cubes

I've had my Souper Cubes for about three years now, and I still really love them.
I've always been a big fan of freezing individual portions to eat later — and these days I've been trying to eat less processed foods and sugar in general, and more protein and fiber and vegetables. Souper Cubes are the perfect thing for freezing everything like pasta, rice, and oatmeal, as well as soups and other liquids.
One of the things that makes them so brilliant is that 4 frozen blocks (of the 2 cup Souper Cubes) fit PERFECTLY into a gallon-size freezer Ziploc. (You can also just keep them in the Souper Cubes in the freezer, they stack really nicely.) I also like that they have cup markers on the side, although usually I'm just divvying up something from a larger serving.
I have similar options from random brands, found on sale at various spots, and I will say that the Souper Cubes are much nicer than any of the other options — they're a very thick, sturdy mold that will hold their form even when not frozen. I've never had any problems getting the frozen food out of the molds, either, unlike some of the other ones. After three years, I don't think there's any noticeable wear or tear.
All in all, I highly recommend! You can find them for $20 at Sur la Table, or get 2 for $40 at Amazon.

My husband is likely going to get asked to contribute (as a project manager/leader) to a large, high-profile project later this afternoon and he really, really does not want to. This project caused endless headaches and an early retirement for two predecessors and it really doesn’t play to his strengths – he’s a great technical contributor, but would be the first to say he hates and is terrible at project management, not for lack of trying. He would only get asked because they’re struggling to staff it, not because he will lead it to success. What’s a good way to say “this doesn’t play to my strengths, I would hate every second, you’ll regret using me, and it would be much better all around if you asked someone else?” He truly (in his very marrow) does not want to do this and is willing to take the risk of taking a stand, so would appreciate recs on phrasing rather than advice on why he shouldn’t push back.
“He would only get asked because they’re struggling to staff it, not because he will lead it to success.” Sounds like they’re not going to care what kind of argument he makes.
Sounds like they should hire someone specifically to run this project. He could explain why he would be a poor choice, note the historical problems with getting this staffed, and ask them to consider bringing in someone just for this.
We all want this project to succeed Chadwick, and gee, so sorry that I don’t have the background or expertise to make that happen.
Is there another coworker who WOULD want the role who he could suggest as an alternative?
Definitely not right now – the small team was hit by a death, an early retirement, and hopefully not a refusal to renew a visa. There might be others on more distant teams but no one he could recommend personally.
Is outsourcing/contracting with a professional PM an option? I don’t know the landscape but it seems like the perfect time to look for temporary experiences professional help – high stakes and a talent void.
If viable, could he say “This is such an important, high visibility project. I think we should consider investing in a contactor to make sure this comes through. And the team can then focus on our other ongoing obligations without risking another failure to launch.”
That’s what I think they should do – the situation clearly calls for a large-scale, highly experienced PMP.
Option 1) present an alternative (other person, 3rd party, kill the project, etc)
Option 2) present a major conflict (of interest, PTO, etc)
Posting here: the biopsy was benign!
Yay! So glad for you!
Yay!!
Hooray!!
Yay! Do something comforting today.
Just a vent: I think the reason I get so angry at drivers who insist on going exactly the speed limit is because in my head they’re all sanctimonious MAGA pro-lifers. I realize no connection between the two though.
Lilololol what?!
I’d think MAGA types would be way more like to be entitled jerks who think the speed limit doesn’t apply to them. But sounds like you might also be one of those people.
What? LOL, that’s quite a logic leap!
Right?! So random.
Wow. That’s… unique.
I’m lucky to be alive today because I was cycling across the entrance to an on-ramp, the first car approaching slowed down and waved at me, and the car behind them decided that was too slow and abruptly gunned it swerving around the first car to pass them. Thankfully about 1 second after my back tire was out of the way. So, maybe the speed limit isn’t so bad.
Two young NHL brothers got killed in exactly this way last year. They were cycling on the shoulder, car next to them was passing them slowly, car behind him decided to pass that car on the right, running right over the men… Nothing is worth doing that to save literally 2 seconds.
This was so sad. Wasn’t one of them about to get married and they were together for that?
Their sister was getting married, and they both had babies on the way. So tragic
Lol, I’m far to the left of most on this board and I am a very cautious, rule following driver because I don’t want to give law enforcement any pretext to pull me over. If they’re gonna get up to shenanigans, I’m not about to make it easy.
You need medication.
Oh yeah, people who follow the law are the worrrrst.
I’m all for following the law, UNLESS you are in the far left lane, in which case, stop doing that! That is the lane for law breakers only.
Not wanting to kill people on the road is really different from not being pro-choice??
Are you pro preventable traffic mortality or what is your position here?
The only time I think a driver is MAGA is when they have one (or two) American flags fluttering from poles they somehow attached to the back of their truck.
Is it really worth getting this bent out of shape (probably multiple times a day?) over someone who is driving correctly? It seems like you’re trying to ascribe some made up negative quality to them because you’re having some personal issues. If you’re genuinely angry over this, probably a good idea to get help.
it reduces emissions, saves money, decreases traffic deaths, decreases traffic jams, and acknowledges that society is largely based people on voluntarily abiding by laws. Most of those things are not MAGA coded in particular.
Maybe a lawyer can weigh in.
I live with my partner in a rented townhouse (the complex is owned by a large property management company). Last April, the ceiling in my entryway started leaking. We filed a maintenance request and put a bucket under it. Nothing happened for a few weeks and mold started forming. Maintenance people came to look at it, but nothing was done. In May they opened up the ceiling to let it “dry out” and sprayed mold stuff on it but… its been left like that. Apparently most townhouses in my building have leaking in this area because the building was built poorly.
The townhouse next door was fixed over the summer but apparently the contractor is quoting way more to do the rest of the units. The property manager says they’re working on this daily but its been 4 months and my ceiling still has a gaping hole in it. We don’t want to move for another year and don’t want to move out over this. We’ve been withholding 1/3 of the rent since June in an escrow account. Should we withhold more? Is it worth getting a lawyer involved?
Rent withholding is not permitted in my jurisdiction and in others there are prerequisites you have to meet before it is allowed. I don’t know if you’ve followed the law applicable where you live, but if you just decided to withhold you should look into it. You may also be entitled to have the repairs done and reimburse yourself through rent withholding. Again, check your local laws.
Our state allows rent withholding and we followed all the rules in our state’s renters handbook. The withheld money is being kept in an escrow account and we made the property manager aware with a letter sent by certified mail. Once the issue is fixed, the money in the account will be paid.
Unfortunately based on what we saw going on with the other unit, this isn’t something we want to try getting fixed ourselves.
I’m on the 2.5 week work trip right now! Came in a carry on bag. It’s only the first day, but I’m pleased with what I brought
