Splurge Monday’s TPS Report: Tory Burch’s Esther Dress

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

Today's reader-suggested TPS comes from reader K, who couldn't decide between this lovely dress and this dress.
As she explains, “i am loving the spark of color and the conservative cuts, but i'm not sure if a neutral colored cardigan or blazer would be enough to tone down the technicolor going on here. Of course, there's no way to justify adding both to one closet, so i guess i will have to choose between sleeves and a longer hemline– they just feel very versatile for weekend/work/casual/evening wear.”
For our money, we'd go with the Esther dress (pictured). The longer hemline does look more ladylike and professional, and the black base of the Esther dress make it easier to add a black cardi, structured sweater, or cropped jacket.
If the color explosion feels like it's too much for the office you can always wear a black crewneck t-shirt over the dress (effectively wearing it like a skirt). But all in all, gorgeous dress — we love the outline of the placket and the pockets. Lovely! Available at Tory Burch for $425. Tory Burch ESTHER Dress

I think the background of this dress is navy (the color is “navy starburst”), so I would probably play off the white instead (I’m thinking a wrap sweater would look sharp enough and yet break up the pattern). If you could get the yellow right, that would be cute too.
I would also choose this dress over the other (you can add sleeves, but not hemline inches!)
I agree on the choice between the two dresses. Note that TB runs pretty small, especially through the hips and bust. I usually wear a 4-6 in dresses, but go up to an 8 in Tory.
A t-shirt over a dress… For the office? Really?? Would people mind sharing whether (1) they actually do/have done that and (2) they’d consider it with this dress? I’ve never encountered that particular practice and think I’d feel extremely strange, but I’m always eager to learn…
LOVING this dress.
I definitely agree on the dress suggestion; easier to add sleeves than length. I wish the model didn’t look like a pouty high school student, though; it makes it much harder to imagine this dress in an office setting.
And as for a t-shirt over the dress…I’m not sure I’d do that, but a short-sleeve sweater with a tidy hemline (so it looks like it’s meant to not be tucked in) would probably be OK.
Wow! That’s a whole lotta look. I guess I would need a full blazer before I felt comfortable wearing this to the office, and even then it would have to be a Friday.
The outlined placket and pockets scream “little girl romper” to me, so maybe that is what I am reacting to.
Dress is a nice shape, but I don’t care for the print. Kinda loud.
I just ordered this dress at the Tory Burch Private sale and it did not fit. I received it last night and I am now selling on ebay for $130.00 if anyone is interested!!!!!
