For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional.
I don't know that I've seen a suit this color for a long while — and I kind of love it. It's not quite purple, not quite red, not quite pink — and the subdued “plum rose” color is perfect.
The suiting has matching pieces including a skirt, two sleeved dresses, two pants, two blazers, and a belted top. The pieces are $79-$189 at Ann Taylor, available in sizes 00-18.
Hunting for something similar in plus sizes? This magenta suit is brighter but similar, and it's part of the big one-day sale at Avenue right now.

Hopefully a fun question on a Tuesday afternoon: what is your pop culture rabbit hole?
Mine is the UK royal family. As an American, they really have no bearing on my life, and I find the idea that you are destined to lead based on your family of birth ridiculous. And yet, I enjoy the pomp and the fashion and the drama! I do step away from it every now and then; there is so much nastiness online.
Anon
I like something like @royalfashionpolice (b/c I’m not even clear on which countries are kingdoms / queendoms vs which just have royals running around being fancy).
Take-aways:
The Queen of Spain indeed dresses like someone straight out of “Law & Order: Madrid”
These women seem to have feet that tolerate standing in heels. I am such a commoner w/r/t feet.
It really helps you look good if you wear clothes that fit. I bet you could these people into mall brands and they’d make them look amazing (but it would all fit and be tailored; since my Covid15, too much in my closet is tight and/or pulls across the stomach — do not wear!).
Cat
oh, I like @royalfashionpolice too. She covers everyone!
Others – @the_mountbatten_windsors and @fromberkshiretobuckingham
Sometimes when there’s lots of appearances my Insta is inundated with repeats of the same shots, but all of them also make thoughtful commentary that I enjoy.
Anon
I think that this is part of the reason that Fergie never really looks good. She seems to wear clothes that don’t flatter her shape and are also not always well-fitting. The Queen of Belgium (they have a Queen! I’m not sure I’d otherwise know that but for #fashion) seems to be a regular-sized adult woman and always seems to look great. Ditto Camilla (who IIRC is a grandmother). I’d love to look like a model, but that won’t happen, but wearing clothes that fit is something I can master.
helloanon
Yes to all of this! They really are great advertising for tailoring.
Seventh Sister
I’m all in for Crown Princess Mary of Denmark. While I don’t really want my daughter to marry into a royal family, Denmark seems like an OK place to be a princess. Like, maybe you get to be friends with Former PM Birgitte Nyborg and live in a pretty palace in a park with a lake?
Anononon
I have a friend in Denmark who lives down the street from someone relatively high up in the royal family (I forget who). They just live on like, a regular street. Albeit with some extra security but it doesn’t sound like a ton. I don’t go in much for royal families but from my friend’s stories the Danish monarchy sounds shockingly normal all things considered.
AIMS
It’s much easier to stand in heels when you are driven everywhere, always have a seat available when you need, and don’t have to wear them for more than an hour or two max.
Anon
True. And a car + driver to drop you off exactly where you need to be.
BUT when I wear heels, my stance widens and I don’t even stand elegantly. These royals manage not to look all clompy in their heels.
Anon
The Duggars.
Anonymous
I hate that I can name so many of them and their next generation. My college friends and I had such a weird obsession with them.

I am so happy to report to you that it is Wednesday, dear helloanon.
To answer your actual question: mine is the UK royals too (and the Swedish royal family to a certain extent). And royals throughout history, though I don’t know if that counts as pop culture. Also astrology.
helloanon
Hahaha, thank you! It’s been a week, hence my desire to discuss trivial issues. Thank you for playing! :)
anonshmanon
I am Thursday-tired, so you are not alone!
Cat
It feels like a Tuesday to me too… which is so much better than it feeling like a Thursday :)
I also enjoy BRF news. Maybe it comes from being the same age as William – someone always had him on their wall of crushes! I preordered the Revenge book and am super excited for my new beach read. The author has a reputation of being very thorough and rarely sued… even the letter that journalist put out didn’t really deny much of anything, other than his stutter should have been characterized as a stammer.
helloanon
Revenge does look like a juicy read, and I feel the same about the VF journalist. He didn’t really dispute the accuracy of the book’s content, just added things he wished were included. It read to me like a PR exercise so celebs will continue to accept his interview requests.
Anon
The royal family for me too. Also figure skating gossip but not sure if that counts as pop culture.
Anon
The skating coverage on GoFugYourself got me through my first miscarriage. Amazing fluffy stuff.
helloanon
Ooh yes, figure skating! I wish the Fug girls still covered the royals. I also enjoy their TV recaps. Sometimes I read them without watching the show, or after quitting the show in the case of Outlander.
Anon
Same. Maybe they could have just stopped covering Will-Kate-Harry-Meghan and left us with the rest of the royals (they did the ones from . . . Bhutan? once and I’d never have known that they have a royal family but for a fashion website). I liked the “stuff you wear for state visits” aspect of fashion b/c I feel like it’s nice to see adults in adult clothes + some sort of national costumes.
Anne-on
Fun! Definitely celebrity gossip over here. I have followed the Fug Girls since the early aughts and regularly bounce around between a few different pop culture websites. I used to enjoy the Royal family gossip – the Dutch Royals rock some serious jewerls! But the commentary got really nasty around Meghan (Gary Janetti’s IG was way over the line). I personally don’t care for Meghan’s style and she strikes me as well meaning but drunk on her own kool aid BUT there is no way she deserves any of the insanity that got thrown at her. I absolutely would be down for gossiping about her clothing choices (for an actress she continually whiffs it on the fit of her clothes) but it seems there is no way to do that without trolls or rabid fans invading the comments and I get why the Fug Girls avoid talking about her.
helloanon
Ugh, and didn’t Janetti use pics of W&K’s kids to create memes insulting Meghan? Just so gross all the way around.
Cat
Janetti is gross in so many ways. I used to follow him for light humor but he totally jumped the shark.
I agree that the bizarrely strident tr-lls and stans made it hard for accounts to cover W&K and M&H fashion. Some completely went over the deep end to please the stans (cough, eholmes), some stopped covering them at all (Fug Girls, which was a bummer, because they are great), and some, like those I mentioned above as following, shut down any mean nonsense in their comment sections, which I really appreciate.
Anonymous
How did eholmes go over the deep end?
Anon
Completely agree on eholmes. It’s almost unbearable.

All Euro nobility. My husband has a German title and his aunts and uncles went school with various families covered in media and we took a German posting which was a rather surreal two years as he was recognized. The few degrees of separation pulls me in every time.
Anonymous
Wait, what? Tell us more!
Anon
Or even just a hint. Please….
Emma
A guy I went to elementary school (he was the local heartthrob, lol) married a minor German princess. We are Facebook friends and when they posted pictures of their wedding I went down a stalking rabbit hole (engagement photos in Vogue! Lots of discussion of whether he was noble enough for her! it was all a little insane and very entertaining). I did have brief fantasies of having a royal wedding like theirs instead of the casual bbq we were planning at the time, but since my grandmother does not own a castle and no one in my family owns large hats (or that much $$$), it probably wasn’t for me.
Anon
We draw the line at gum chewing during the reception (some of my cousins married v. young). Definitely not castle-ready (although my late grandmother would sometimes note that while everyone claims that they are descended from Charlemagne, we can actually trace our lineage so it’s not just chatter or guessing).
#DoYouKnowWhoIAm?!
Coach Laura
Yes, I believe it’s 80% of people of European extraction are descended from Charlemagne, but only a few (including you and I) can prove it with verified lineage. Mine is through DAR and a Gateway ancestor. Of course, any NPE along the way could have invalidated that but at least back to 1750 or so, my lineage is triangulated by DNA.
helloanon
That is fascinating!
Seafinch
Ha! it isn’t really THAT spicy but it’s cool. Germans officially got rid of titles over a hundred years ago so they are incorporated into your name now and so it’s a bit secretive as to whether people figure out “who you are”. But it is a very small group (Prussian aristocracy) and so they generally have your number upon meeting. My husband went to the German Staff College (that was our posting) and the other nobles knew immediately who he was, the name is very identifiable and his ancestor was Frederick the Great’s right hand man and named as his successor (is on the statue on Unter Den Linden with him), another was Rommel’s first cousin, two great aunts were married to two brothers who were involved in the 21 July plot with Stauffenberg etc. My husband’s grandfather was born in a castle down the road from another family chateau that Napolean used as his HQ in Prussia. BUT…my husband was still born in a suburb of Ottawa, it’s been over 60 years since they left. So really, it’s just a cool historical footnote though we wear the rings (another way the insiders know who you are; the points on the crown in the signet ring tell which rank you are, i.e. 9 points for a Count or Countess) and our kids have a four word last name (in Germany) and three given names. There are some formal associations that publish things and have FB groups and the kids are listed in the German equivalent to the Peerage. Mostly I just watch the weddings of German aristocracy and admire the fashion!
Anon
Aren’t German last names super long and with prepositions (von und zu Schmidtmatterhorn) etc? I thought that was status-signaling.
Seafinch
Yup. Exactly. We’re a “von”. A “von” alone could just be minor nobility, like a Junker or there could be more words in front of it (like us), which usually signals some kind of grant from a sovereign or the Pope.
Anon

Cults, especially ones that broke off from conventional religions. I’m the person who points out that the People’s Temple folks drank Flavor-Aid when someone makes a passing comment about “drinking the Kool-Aid.” Also high-control religious groups (the Amish, etc.).

Same, esp. Scientology and FLDS and LDS but pretty much all of them can get my attention.

My BFF is having her first baby any day now across the country from me in our small hometown. I know food/food delivery/ is generally the most helpful thing for new parents, and I’m working with other hometown friends to see what’s available there. But I’d like to send a little care package too. Any nice extras you were happy to have in the postpartum haze?
anon
Trail mix or other snacks you can eat one-handed.
A soft, lightweight robe.
A glossy magazine or light book.
Lip balm.
If you’re close enough for more personal items, nipple cream, witch hazel pads or satchels for a bath.
Vicky Austin
Love these, thanks. Assuming you meant sachets?
Anonymous
Silverettes! They are real silver nipple shields that you wear in between feeding to help your nipples heal. Pricey and very worth it. Guarantee no one else will get them for her.
Curious
Frida mom pads. The ones that are maxis and ice packs. This unless she had a planned c section.
Anon
I would not do this. 1) My hospital gave me everything I needed on this front (even with a third degree tear I thought the basic hospital stuff was more than sufficient) and 2) even if they don’t, a gift from a friend should be something fun and luxe that takes her mind off her shredded vagina rather than reminding her of it. Personal care postpartum is also so specific, it’s hard to know what she will want/need. I never used nipple cream or witch hazel, for example (but I would have been lost without silicone nipple shields, which lots of people don’t need).
I agree with suggestions for splurgey food (Goldbelly has some good items), cozy loungewear and brain candy magazines/books.

An entire pound cake from some famous bakery. I was soooooo hungry and probably ate it all in one day.

Milk Bar has really good pies and cakes you can order. I also really like Olive and Cocoa for snack assortments (expensive, but the snacks are actually delicious).
Veronica Mars
I just sent a care package like this and it went over well– here’s what I included: a bunch of her favorite snacks (chips, cookies, candies, a mix of salty/sweet), a Yeti cup (the big 30oz one with the handle), a pair of 100% cotton pajamas from Target (I chose a button front style), gift cards to her favorite fast food/pizza places (Domino’s, McDonald’s, etc), magazines and I also went and got her a little perfume rollerball from Ulta and stuck it in the Yeti so it wouldn’t leak/break (she loves perfume but isn’t into makeup). I also put all the gift receipts in the Yeti so she could return anything she didn’t like. You could scale up/down based on budget.
Anon
This is perfect, especially the giant Yeti. You’re always thirsty if you’re breastfeeding.

Ladies–Is there an easy way to replace a phone on short notice? For the second time in just over two years (so my phone was paid for), my screen got smushed, and I spent much of Monday morning at the TMobile/Sprint store. It took hours! It was worse than buying a car! I knew what I wanted and it took them a ton of time to find it in stock, to activate the SIM, to deal with “buying out” my old contract/dealing with customer servicec. Why is this so hard?
Does anyone have any tips (besides keeping a burner phone ready for accidents)? It was literally awful. I am not sure how to optimize this, but I am open to tips regarding making it less painful when I do this again in two years!
Anon
If you are an iphone user, I’ve never spent more than 30 minutes at an apple store buying and activating a new phone. They can connect it to your existing service, transfer the SIM, and help you log in to icloud to start transferring your content. You can also do 0% financing through them.

Buying a new iPhone is super easy.
Ellen
I am waiting for the 5G iPhone 14 to come out b/c they have an offering @ Verizon where you can get 300 x 300 mbps Fios Internet for $25/month if you have an unlimited 5G phone plan. I shouldn’t care that much but the FIOS internet includes a router, and I know that the 5G phone plan will be expensive, but maybe together it will be a little cheaper than what I am paying. Of course, that may mean loosing my land line, which the firm pays for (as they do for everything else), but I am trying to be fruegal for the firm’s benefit.
Does anyone in the HIVE have a 5G phone in the City, and is it any better as far as coverage? Is VERIZON’s offering a good one? I want to hear from the HIVE before I suggest it to the manageing partner. I know VERIZON’s coverage is good in the City, but is it worth it to require all partners to go with VERIZON?
And if we want to can we get the phones directly from Apple and still qualify for the special VERIZON deal? I could call Apple but think that if the HIVE already knows, I can go there and tell them they CAN do it for us. Please to advice me! YAY!!!
Hypatia
I also never buy an iphone with financing/contract. I’ve had great luck just buying refurbished, unlocked (ie can be used with any SIM from any country) iphones outright.
Anon
I’m a Costco member, so that’s where I go when my phone dies. I don’t think it’s ever taken more than an hour to pick out a phone and get it set up.
Anon
I have boost (I can’t say enough good things about it), so we have to buy our phones outright and then activate them through boost. It at least cuts down on the buying out the contract/trading in the phone headache .
I usually order my phone through Boost so it gets delivered with a SIM card, but when I have been in a crunch I’ve been able to buy a phone at Apple/BestBuy and then go to a boost store ti get the SIM.
4 people on my family plan, unlimited talk/text/data, $25/line.
anon
I buy unlocked phones and manually switch out the SIM myself! Takes longer to open the new phone box than to switch out the SIMs.
Nom
Yes, this, it’s super easy. And if you can go ~24 hours without a new phone, you can buy it from Am*z*n and not even have to leave your house.
If you want someone to walk you through it, Best Buy will help you do the data transfer if you buy your phone there. I ended up getting my last phone there due to a similar situation, and it took maybe 90min total just bc I was vacillating on which phone to get. Could have easily been done in 45min or less. They have both locked & unlocked phones, and you can do curbside pickup for an unlocked phone if you want it same-day.
Cat
I have a Verizon iPhone, and was in and out in 30 minutes including downloading all my stuff from iCloud. (They also do 0% financing for 24 months.)
I would imagine if you’re switching carriers (sounds like you were?) that it may be more complicated.
Anonymous
I buy unlocked phones from Apple and put them on a pay-as-you-go plan. So much simpler and less expensive.
Anon
My iPhone died last year. I ordered one from Apple online and it showed up at my house within a day or two (this was pre-vax and I’m not sure if the Apple stores were even open at that point). It took maybe 20-30 minutes for everything to transfer, but only a few minutes of my active time.
Anonymous
You can buy new stock phones off Amazon (check for reputable dealer) and just transfer your SIM card yourself. I’ve done this when I needed to replace my Android phones, and I’m on T-mobile. If you’re changing carriers then yeah it’s going to be a pain no matter what though.
Anonymous
I’ve got Verizon, but I just buy an unlocked phone from Best Buy and transfer/activate the existing SIM (which I usually do in person with an appointment, but I think to activate it now you can just call or maybe even do it online)

If you’re a lawyer whose legal career has been just ok/nothing great – despite doing nearly a decade in litigation, and a half decade in regulatory (currently in regulatory not lit), and you had the chance to move to a business job, would you do it or decline and what risks would make you decline? Business job is of the consulting variety, not like MBB or 5 days/week on the road but working with companies to improve things before they develop a particular type of legal problem that you used to litigate. I do have a finance degree from years ago as well as a more recent finance certification so I wouldn’t be going in as a lawyer who doesn’t know math/do Excel. Any job would also come through connections so they know they’re hiring a lawyer crossing over into business and have some interest in my lawyer skills, not an MBA or an ex investment banker.
Would you chance it? Seems risky to me in that if it doesn’t work out, I don’t think I could get back into law given how “traditional” lawyer paths are. So it’d be like now what? But also seems exciting to finally do something new. FWIW I’m 43 and single, so I don’t have anyone else’s income to rely on though am comfortable with my own savings and investments. It does feel a bit like now or never, as in who’d give me this chance at 55. WWYD?
Anon
How do they figure out your comp and what metrics will be used in your review?
At my point in my career, it’s all about “what revenue are you bringing in” and how do they quantify / value that for comp purposes. Also: what direct revenue vs what revenue do you directly assist (or would we lose without you).
helloanon
I would go for it, with the caveat that I am a lawyer who is ready to stop practicing. I do think you could get back into law from this kind of role, especially if you were willing to work at an alternative legal provider like Axiom that basically seconds you to inhouse legal departments for contracted engagements.
Anonymous
Actually I’ve seen people do what you’re saying for a few years, they don’t like it often because unlike you they really didn’t get finance or business or were going into an area they hadn’t even seen from a law perspective, and then two or three years later they land at a pretty good company in house. I honestly think getting some real business experience helps people move in house because you stand out from the sea of applicants coming from big or mid law or government. And it lends some credibility to the discussion that every in house candidate has about wanting to support a business because you’ve done that for several years. So I wouldn’t look at this as this is it, I’d never be a lawyer again. I mean very likely you couldn’t get back into a vault 50 because a stodgy 75 year old partner won’t understand why you did anything besides write briefs, but in settings where there are younger, more pragmatic lawyers you’d have good chances just in case you changed your mind.

Can I wear black to a 4pm wedding at a vineyard? The groom says it is “normal formal” so my plans for a rufflepuff dress seem out. I’d rather not buy anything and have a variety of black sheath dresses I think I could make work. Didn’t know if it would feel totally out of place.
Anon
I feel like a black sheath is not wedding attire. I’m not sure it’s even formal attire (or that 4pm is formal). My vote is black rufflepuff. Or any rufflepuff.

You can, as in you’re not breaking any rules, but I think a black sheath dress would be out of place if this is an outdoor wedding during the summer.
Anon
I think a black sheath can be fine if it has some detailing that’s dressier than a work sheath. Dress it up more with jewelry and killer shoes.
Anonymous
Black sure. Like I’d wear my black lace nap dress. But a black sheath sounds very work dress to me?
Cat
imho you *can* in that it wouldn’t be inappropriate, but it might not feel as festive and colorful as what I imagine other guests would pick for that venue and time.

I would just go ahead with the rufflepuff dress instead of a black sheath dress.

Way too casual.

I was thinking more like one of the fancy nap dresses. IMO this is too casual.
Anon
Nap dresses aren’t “fancy,” just expensive. To me, this dress is actually more formal than the official Nap Dress, which look very casual to me because of the smocking (but I agree neither this nor a nap dress is really appropriate for a formal wedding).

Yes. Too casual.

H13
Nap dresses make me look like a toddler somehow. The smocking just doesn’t work on me.
Anon
I’m with you OP. Nap dresses look hideous on me (and most people IMO – I think you have to be tall, slender and small-busted to pull it off) and I also don’t think it’s a formal look the way people on this thread are suggesting. They’re not cheap and they’re very trendy with influencers, which is maybe why people are saying they read as “fancy,” but it’s a pretty casual look IMO. I actually think this dress is way prettier than The Nap Dress but I agree about getting something else for the wedding.
Anon
I can’t with ridiculous dress codes. “Normal formal”??
H13
That was a verbal description from the groom to my husband so I take it with a grain of salt. We’ve been out of the wedding circuit for a while and I also just can’t get excited about the dresses I’m see out there.
Cat
lol, I think this is a term that has popped up in response to weddings having more detailed dress codes or color requests. “Normal formal” meaning… wear a nice dress of your choosing in whatever color you want :)
MagicUnicorn
Haha, yeah, if my spouse or any friends told me “normal formal” that would pretty much mean “not paint-splattered or grubby yardwork clothes” and I would need to ask someone else.
Clementine
FWIW, I would wear this dress to a 4pm winery wedding with big earrings and stacked sandals.

I’m wearing a black dress to a 4pm wedding at a barn this weekend. I think it’s not the color, it’s the style – the dress I’m wearing has fun cut outs and I’ll wear with big floral earrings and strap puppy sandals. A sheath dress at a wedding just feels generally odd.
Anon
I think a sheath dress in a bright color is totally fine. But I agree black + sheath makes it feel too somber and/or businessy for a wedding.
ELS
Would anyone like to do a little vicarious shopping? I’ve just been invited to a black tie optional event on August 6, and I have nothing in my closet that will do the trick.
About me: 36 years old, size 10-12, 5’5″, slight pear shape (my shoulders aren’t tiny, but my hips are bigger). I prefer styles that would allow me to wear a traditional bra, and err on the side of classic for these types of dresses. The event is for work (I’m a lawyer), so I will be networking and representing the firm while I’m there.
I’d prefer to stay around $300, and would love something that I could re-wear to other events.

I feel like this is a job for Nordstrom, either with a personal shopper or through searching their website for formal/c*cktail/special occasion dresses and filtering for your preferred length, sleeve, etc. Lots of pretty Adrianna Pappell and Tadashi Shoji. I also love the Karen Kane scalloped lace dress in Navy, if you are open to above
Coach Laura
You didn’t specify length, but given the black-tie optional, assumed short.

I like Tadashi Shoji for this and you could probably get a regular br@ with a racer-back clip.

Best topical to relieve sunburn on my face? Mostly forehead.
Cat
I just use good old fashioned aloe and slug myself up with it. Source – missed a spot on my forearm this weekend and thankfully it’s turned to tan without peeling.
Anon
Aquaphor. Or really any moisturizer to keep your skin from drying.
Bean74
Full-fat Greek yogurt. Don’t know how, don’t know why, but it kept a chest burn from peeling and reduced the redness fairly quick.
Anonia
Walgreens After Sun lotion. Or Burt’s Bees after sun (if you can find it anymore).Straight up aloe vera works well too.
Signed, the person who also burned their forehead this week.

Would someone be willing to ELI5 how to get library books on my Kindle device? I’ve been using Libby and my ipad and reading them within the Libby app, but I got a new Kindle and I like the reading experience so much more on it. Do I still use Libby or do I have to go through the Kindle software directly to the library?
I feel like my mother right now, but it is what it is.
Vicky Austin
When I still had access to Libby (*sob*), there was an option at the point of checking out the book to “send to Kindle.” You may be able to check your settings for “always read on kindle” options as well.
Curious
It’s this!
Jules
I use Overdrive and not Libby, and I don’t know if there’s a difference, but when I check out an ebook on Overdrive there is an option to choose epub or Kindle format. I choose Kindle (it’s automatic now, I think), and I am then redirected to the Amazon site for it to be sent to my Kindle. It sounds complicated but is basically seamless.
Ellen
Can someone tell me how I can get Overdrive and Libby? I love to read and am an avid reader, so I would like to figure out how to get these on my iPad, but I now have to buy my books through Amazon or Apple. FOOEY!
Anon8
From your shelf tap “manage loan” then tap “read with” and choose “Kindle.” It should redirect you to an Amazon page where you click “get library book” and it’ll deliver it to your kindle. You may have accidentally set your default to “read with Libby” instead of “read with Kindle” which is likely why it’s not doing this automatically when you borrow a book.
Anon8
Sorry should have clarified in the first part– from your *Libby* shelf, tap “manage loan” next to a book you’ve already borrowed :)
Cat
Does your library use Overdrive? If yes… register for that. Also be sure your Kindle is registered to your Amzn account.
-Find the book you want
-Click ‘borrow,’ select the checkout duration, click ‘borrow’ again
-Click ‘read now with Kindle’ which routes you to Amzn.
-Click Get Library Book over on the right. Underneath it there should be a dropdown that says Send To and identify your Kindle.
-When your Kindle is on wifi it will automatically download the book.
Pro tip – if you’re not done with a book, keep your wifi turned off. The book will check itself back in and be available to the next person, but it won’t disappear from your Kindle until back online.
anon
Another pro tip–if you keep your Kindle on airplane mode and never sync it, you can transfer books from Amazon via USB (it’s in the drop down menu on each book in “Manage My Content and Devices” and they will never, ever get repo’d. For good karma, manually return them to the library once you’ve downloaded so that the next person can have them. You just plug your Kindle into your computer and drag the downloaded files over like an external hard drive. Source: librarian who says that this has no adverse effect whatsoever on the library’s statistics or holdings. I think of it as the book equivalent of Mr. Rogers supporting VHS for time shifting TV.
Anon
Libby has the option to send to kindle, or if you just use the library webpage, you can send to kindle from there too. I read on my iPad mini, but agree that the kindle app is way better than the Libby app, which I only use when the book I want to read isn’t available for kindle.
Anon
OP here. Thank you all so much! I didn’t realize it was as easy as clicking on a book in my Libby app.
All of my books are returned right now so I couldn’t figure out how to get a new one, and it turns out my library card has expired, apparently intentionally as I just called the library and they only allow you to renew in person *eyeroll* and they used the word intentionally because post COVID (their words, I don’t think we’re post COVID) they want patrons to return to the library in person so they expired everyone’s cards.
Anon
This happened to me too, and I have to go in person to renew. I just got the Brooklyn Public Library out of state card online and I don’t have to go in person! And, it has a lot of copies of most popular ebooks, so they come up super fast in my holds. Just a tip in case you don’t want to go in!
Vicky Austin
How did you do this? We were just discussing this recently and I thought they’d discontinued the out of state program!
Anon
OMG NOOOOooooo. I’m so sad. I had no idea! I guess mine won’t renew! I cannot even explain how sad I am right now. :(
Anon
No, they haven’t discontinued it! It’s just not free unless you’re under a certain age, I think 21. It’s $50/year for adults.
Anonymous
What a jerk move. I think of folks like my mom where it is a big burden to drive. I have cancer and am trying to avoid indoor as much as I can. Super annoying when folks are doing things like that just because.
Anon
I’m OP and I take humira so I’m moderately immunocompromised and I’m super annoyed!!
Curious
Thinking of you, anonymous. Hope treatment is going as best as it can.
Anon
My library has started expiring cards ridiculously often, like every 6 months. It’s so annoying. I do go into the library regularly to pick books up but I never remember the expiration date so I always get a nasty surprise when I try to put a book on hold and am unable to do so. It feels like a really crappy thing for them to do, especially with a pandemic still raging.

For those of you who put their savings into brokerage accounts for investing purposes, do you ever sell those stock or funds to use the money to buy anything? So I’m not talking about funds that are for retirement nor for early retirement. I’m talking about money you may put into the market simply because you have no other use for it for the next few years and don’t want it sitting in savings.
I’ve been investing diligently for the last decade starting in my early 30s, simply because I wasn’t buying a house so I figured might as well grow my money in something else. Now I am buying a house and while I’m not using those invested funds for down payment or closing, part of me thinks it’d be nice to take out say 15k or 30k to say furnish the house the way I’d like or do a small reno. Yet IDK there’s also a thought in my head of never sell, as if it’s retirement money. I guess some of this money could be for early retirement but I don’t mean retiring at 45, more like retiring a few years early. Would you do it? Timing aside, I don’t mean I have to sell NOW at the market bottom, I could wait until say next year.
Anon
Yes, this is what savings are for, whether they’re invested or just sitting in a savings account. If you’re on track for retirement and have an adequate emergency fund, yes, you can use your own damn money to buy furniture!! Enjoy.
Ellen
I have Ed manage my investments and he says I am mazimizing my options, whatever that means. I did notice the value has gone down every month since February, even though I keep investing my salary, it keeps disappearing. Why is that? Isn’t an investment supposed to GROW over time? Dad says Ed is not doing a great job but I don’t know if Dad is just being a blowhard. Is he?
Anonymous
I’ve let the money sit and grow, but if I wanted some of it, I’d stop reinvesting the capital gains and dividends for a while, and spend that. Selling the stock can also impact your taxes, so you’d need to analyze that carefully.
Anon
We did this. Just keep in mind that you will have to pay tax on the sale. Your advisor should be able to help you be strategic for tax purposes on what specific investments make sense to sell.
Anon
curious if anyone bought anything amazing at the nordstrom sale NAS
Anonymous
I bought a cute pair of black P448’s with glittery threads in the side. I don’t have any dark sneakers and they are going to be perfect come fall. I also bought a pair of the Cancun ones that I’m waiting to arrive. The jeans I ordered were cancelled and so was the Sunday Riley pack I ordered (I got in during influencer and still coudn’t get it).
Anon
I bought two Bobbi Brown sets of things I already use (the vitamin enriched face primer and the shadow sticks) so while not a super exciting discovery, it’s nice to get a deal on things I’d eventually buy anyway.
I also bought the Hermes “Jardin” set of fragrances. I already knew I liked Sur le Nil but I didn’t know the others. So it turns out I like that one and one other (Sur le Toit) but not really the other two, so I don’t know how good of a deal it turned out to be.
So I’m just meh with the sale this year. I used to get really excited about it but I don’t understand fashion right now and I didn’t see any clothes or shoes I felt like I had to have.
Anon
op
me too. i remember being so excited but meh

Nothing super amazing but a couple of cute tops, some nice white sneakers, and some pleather jeans.
Anon
op
you’re so cool. i couldn’t pull off plearher or leather! : )

I got the Blank NYC pleather pants in black and am watching to see if my sold out size in the cognac comes back because I like them so much.

i finaly watched the “how to hide your tummy video” someone posted last week – woah! i had no idea about the shoulder pads. can anyone recommend a good waist cincher like the one shown there?
this was the video if anyone wants to look:

Curious
Thank you! Just bought shoulder pads!
Anon
Aiiii — what is happening? I gained 3 pounds since yesterday and 2 pounds already today. Is this the demons of perimenopause?
Anon
That is water retention, not weight.
KJ
No. Fluctuations in weight are normal, and there are measurement inaccuracies, etc. Only way to check weight loss progress is as a trend over many measurements.
Paging song bridesmaid
Was reading the Monday thread late, and saw the post from the bridesmaid with the very extra bride.
If you can’t get out of it, and really need a song, I nominate Song no 2 by Blur. It’s short, catchy and the only part anybody remembers is the woohoo! Easy to use for coordinated pose.

Dear ‘rettes,
Does anyone own this bag — or one similar — from Mark & Graham? Or have any insight into these bags?

It looks pretty, but I wonder how heavy it is…
Thanks!
