For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional. Tall girls, weigh in: are Rachel Zoe suits amazing if you have really long legs? I feel like every time I see Rachel Zoe pants styled on a model, she is drowning in pants. It happens across different stores so I don't think it's just a styling issue. Anyhoo: I know, I know, I just posted a Rachel Zoe suit a few weeks ago. But say it with me, ladies: houndstooth. I have seen 3 different houndstooth suits lately, which makes me think it's coming in for suits in the fall, and this one is by far the most flattering of the ones I've seen. I particularly like the blazer with those big patch pockets and structured fit. Oh, and I love it with that dark green blouse, which has an interesting “side placket” feature. The jacket (Rachel Zoe ‘Charlie II' Houndstooth Check Jacket) is $450, and the pants (Rachel Zoe ‘Hutton' Houndstooth Check Flare Leg Pants (Long)) are $295, both available for preorder from Nordstrom. I just had my master’s thesis accepted and wanted to treat myself. I have my eye on this cap from Burberry that would go great with a black vintage trench I have from my mom. Thoughts?

it’s gorgeous. it seems like the kind of piece you’d need to know how to take care of, which I don’t. but if you do, more power to you!
TCFKAG
If it fits into your wardrobe and you’d wear it, than YOU GO GIRl. I only wear hats for warmth in the winter. But if I wore hats for style, it would look like that.
Bonnie
It’s nice if you can rock it. I’m not sure if it’s distinctive enough for that price point though. Here are similar ones for about 10% of the Burberry cost: http://www.jcrew.com/boys_category/accessories/hatsandcaps/PRDOVR~59475/59475.jsp?srcCode=AFFI00001&siteId=J84DHJLQkR4-gyS0kiCsgpzZ558Pc3N4OQ

Oh, I forgot to reply after I looked up the hat.
I like it! I’ve owned a lot of similar hats from thrift stores, but they were all a little beat-up, and I get tired of them after awhile, so that worked for me. If you would wear it more often than I do, and not get sick of it, go for it!
(If you’re not a regular hat wearer, though, be warned -you have to do your hair to accommodate your hat.)
Midwest
Wowza, that is gorgeous and extremely stylish. And I’m not one to gush over hats, at all.

I don’t like patch pockets. They feel… lazy?
qwerty
i have seen rachel zoe pants in person, they are incredibly long. at least 6-7 inches too much for my 5’5′ frame
b23
I’m 5’8″ and tried on a pair that was at least that much too long on me too. I love the idea of long pants, but you’d have to be a giant to wear those, even with tall heels!
qwerty
now that i think of it, i was probably wearing heels when i tried those pants on. i gotta say though, i loved the fabric. it felt very luxe.
Cornellian
my 6′ + 4” stilettos friend still can’t wear those off the rack.
L2fly
Working for the government, I can’t see getting to a point where I’d ever spend $300 on pants… but if I ever do, being 5’10”, I’ll now head straight for Rachel Zoe! How wonderful, a brand/designer who realizes you can always hem up, but can’t let down what isn’t there on ‘regular’ (ie, 32 inch) inseams! How wonderful to not have to dig through an entire rack searching for the elusive ‘T’ in my size!
Parker - Boardroombelles
Dito. It doesn’t matter how pretty the pants are, if they are too short they are no good. And hemming is neither particularly difficult nor costly.
Cornellian
but with pants like this if you lopped off 6 inches you’d lose a bit of shape from them, I think. I wasn’t kidding about my leggy 6′ + 4-5 inch heel friend not being able to wear RZ, so I imagine even a tall woman would have to lose some serious length from these pants. THat’s a problem I have as a shorter woman, is that hemmed pants tend to end up being thinner at the cuff than they were to begin with, which can mess with their silhouette.
Ellen
Me to. I used to be abel to look good with this look, but now that I am not as SVELTE as I should be, I dare NOT wear something so styelish! FOOEY!
I still have the manageing partner lookeing at me even with the less styelish clothes that I do wear. And Jim wants me to dress more formelly for the court apearances. The manageing partner has ok’ed 2 new outfit’s for me that the is going to pay for 100%. I guess I do have SOMETHING to thank Jim for, in addition to the case load’s. Yay Jim!
But I have had to work alot harder to keep up with my other work, and I STILL have to do the work for the manageing partner on the LAW journal article, but he at LEAST is giveing me a dual BY-LINE credit instead of NOTHING.
AMB
I don’t know who mentioned the Modalu wallets a few weeks ago but I snagged one on sale from Town Shoes yesterday (heads up to Canadian Ladies!). Am very pleased with it.
KC
I didn’t know RZ pants were so long. Definitely going to have to try them. I’m not crazy about the houndstooth (maybe it’s just the way it gets pixelated in the resized images), but I love the green blouse!
b23
That green blouse is drool worthy.
AIMS
I am seriously digging the shade of green on that blouse. The tie is too fussy for me, personally (bow + large bust and I’d feel like Dolly Parton in 9 to 5), but I adore that color. Will have to look for it in other iterations.
Lyssa
I agree completely – hate the bow, love the color!
PharmaGirl
You know, I was about to comment on that blouse and how much I love it until I saw the photo of just the blouse. The side placket is just so odd and would not work with my b@@bs. The color is stunning though chest.
Sydney Bristow
I was just abut to post the same thing. I must find all sorts of items in that color. God I love fall clothing!

Ooh, lovely suit! Probably’d be overwhelming on me, but so elegant on a taller, leaner body.
TJ: I need to get a housewarming gift for my sister- &-brother-in-law. They just closed on their dream house. She’s got three kids ages 4-10, though I am thinking more of a house gift than family gift. This is not for a party, but more as a token of congrats. I don’t want to just get a scented candle but would like to keep it in the $50 and under range. Ideas?
lawsuited
It’s hard to know without knowing their taste, but I’d say a collection of picture frames would be nice so their special family photos can be displayed on the wall of their special new home.
My friend just moved into her place and I got her a couple of these decorate diffusers, which are much prettier than the usual sort (more gift-worthy) and could be useful in a house full of kids:

Check out Fab dot com, they have a lot of really great deals on designer and artistic pieces for the home. Anything from furniture to knick knacks and fun kitchen utensils. I got my boyfriend a NES inspired art print for a huge discount straight from the artist (the seller contacts Fab about the sale, Fab hosts the sale.) My mom and I are obsessed.
KC
I’m similarly Fab obsessed. They have an iPad app that’s seriously dangerous with one-click ordering of prints, books, and furniture… must remember my apartment is limited in size.
Amelia Pond
The upholstered chairs they have on Fab today made me reach for my wallet. Until I remembered that a grand for a peacock print wingback is not in the budget. But I soooo wanted it!

How about an ice cream maker? Macy’s has some <$50.

Sur la Table has the Cuisinart ice cream makers in really fun colors. Also, ice pop molds? Or, Ballard Design has some cool wall art.

How about a stamp or embosser with the new address?

I love this idea!

Can you check out uncommongoods.com or moma’s store for some interesting housewares?
Adele
Thanks y’all! I love the embosser idea but we’re headed there this weekend and I don’t think I have enough time to customize that, though I will definitely keep it in my back pocket for future gift ideas. How sweet and useful!
I love the ice cream maker idea, too, but I have been offered too many ice cream makers by others who didn’t want theirs that I am nervous to do that to my in-laws.
I think I am going to spend the next 30 min. online window shopping through Anthropology and MOMA Online with a big glass of pinot noir to see if I can get a quirky little something though. You guys are always great for special ideas!
NOLA
Yeah, I actually gave mine away because I didn’t want to have to keep the bowl in the freezer. But the kids would love the ice pop mold! I think this would be a cute gift: http://www.amazon.com/Present-Time-Clock-Silverware-Utensils/dp/B001TUYORA

Nordstrom sells embosser kits. Basically you buy it and they get to pick out the design they want and redeem whatever’s in the box. It costs the recipients nothing. I think it’s in-store only in the Home Dept.

How do we know how long the pants actually are? The description doesn’t list the inseam.

One more vote for the new “the Skirt” if you have a straighter figure. I’m something like 36, 27, 25, 5’4 128 with an athletic body and it in size 2 fits me very well. It’s also my first Nordstrom’s purchase!
I also got
-vera wang lavender hidden heel flats, which look great and comfortable, and
-a tissue weight cardigan from caslon, which is definitely tissue weight, and maybe evne too fragile. I’m worried using the snaps will tear the fabric. More updates to come as peopl eleave the office and I can try more stuff on!

Got the email that my package is on the way today :) Hooray new clothes!
Hdm
That narrow thigh/flared bell pant registers as young to me. In certain offices it may be ok, but it’s not for anyone over 30 in my book.
Marie
I agree, and I have to admit this silhouette contributes to my fundamental confusion over which pants DO look both age-appropriate and stylish these days for those of us past 30. I have a decent figure but don’t want to look like mutton dressed as lamb. I have been able to hit the mark in jeans (skinnyish but really straight rather than skinny), but dress pants flummox me. Does anyone have suggestions for contemporary pants silhouettes for middle-aged women? What brands work best for you?
AIMS
Not for anyone over 30?! Really?! Even the What Not To Wear folks give you till 35 to wear miniskirts. I think that’s a bit dramatic of a pronouncement. I am not a huge fan of flared pants, but I don’t think there is anything inherently too youthful about them. Yes, this suit may be a tad trendier than most, but assuming it suits your office and your figure, I don’t think it would be out of place on someone who was as old as, say, 40 or even, horror of horrors, 45.
Anne Shirley
My 60 year old boss rocks pants like these and if I had her a$$ I would too. I’d say jeggings to the office are a bit mutton/lamb, but houndstooth pants?
Michelle
uh oh, I’m wearing Jeggings! Baaahhhhh……

I just ordered 400 dollars worth of maternity clothes from Target. I do not plan to keep $400 worth of maternity clothes from Target, but I have noticed that their clothing is so hard to judge from the pictures that I decided to just get everything that looked even a little bit appealing and then pick out what I expect will really be about 3-5 decent pieces when I see them in person.
Sigh. I do wish that there were more brick and morter stores that sell professional maternity clothing. Grumble, grumble.
FP Angie
Seriously, try consignment stores for maternity wear. I found some great stuff for work after going once on a whim.
EC MD
Have you looked at Gap, Ann Taylor Loft and Old Navy? Those are my favorites, but it’s hard to predict what I like from each (I ordered and returned several hundred dollars of maternity wear from those three). ATL has the best work pants IMO, Gap had cute dresses, Old Navy has cute tops.
CW
I love this suit (and love love love the blouse!), but I’m not sure how I feel about the pockets. The houndstooth and patch pockets feel professorial, but the pockets make it seem too casual and more like a blazer than a pulled together suit. And then you’re just drowning in houndstooth.
Rose in Bloom
I think these pockets are a little big. I have a somewhat similar brown herringbone suit from BR with much smaller patch pockets which has always garnered lots of compliments when I wear it. It also doesn’t have a big pocket up by the lapel.
I also love the green. The only color I’ve been so bold to try with mine are shades of pink.
qwerty
all in all, this is totally my look. but i err toward the quirky brit and too much texture vibe.

Okay, so ha ha, our new boss fooled us. He is introducing the 101 ideas in his presentation at our all-organization meeting on Friday. He kind of laughed sheepishly when he said what he was doing.
He’s doing well at getting up to speed about everything but the budget, which seems to cause him undue concern. We should fix that soon. And he seems to be a “devil’s advocate” kind of guy, which may drive me crazy. But I like him, so I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt. I have also been pretty direct in my feedback. So far, he’s not mad at me…
Susan
Oh no, that 101 ideas thing is like a zombie that won’t stay dead. Good luck!
Senior Attorney
Idea 102: Give the 101 ideas thing a rest. ;)
LadyEnginerd
I’m envisioning him reading all 101 out loud at a large meeting. At first, I thought that was absurd and hilarious and couldn’t possibly be his plan. I then realized I wouldn’t put it past the academic type to do exactly that!
If you can’t stop him, can you at least get him to spring for sufficient coffee and snacks for everyone to pretend to be interested regardless of how many brilliant ideas he presents at a time? I think a croquembouche with 101 delicious morsels would be appropriate.
KC
When I first heard about the 101 ideas, I imagined NOLA’s boss hammering them to the door all Martin Luther 95 Theses style… I like your snacks idea much more.
NOLA
Gotta say I love the idea of nailing it on the door! I don’t think he’s going to read them out loud. What he said is that they would be on a Powerpoint running behind him as he talks, then he would send out the booklet after the meeting. Not sure how that’s all going to go. But hey, I warned him! He did say, in our meeting this morning (in front of most of my staff and faculty) that I had sent him detailed feedback and that he had incorporated all of it. Can’t wait to see that…
eek
This sounds like the meeting from Hades. Happy hour after, anyone?
NOLA
I have to say, I was reading all of the comments on my phone and laughing out loud. You all made me feel so much better! He’s first on the agenda and we have a lot of other things going on afterward. And then we’re throwing a wedding shower for my staff member in the afternoon. I nixed champagne, but maybe I shouldn’t have. I am, however, attempting the no bake nutella cheesecake with oreo crust that was recommended here. Might have to eat the whole thing.
IUD
Hey ladies, I just wanted to thank those of you who have commented about your experiences with IUDs over the past few months, and give a summary of my experience for those who may be considering it. I had been considering getting one for a while, and yesterday I had a Mirena inserted. I was so terrified it would hurt – my blood pressure was so sky high that the nurse checked it three times and even with me lying down it was still high, although when the gyno came in she said it wasn’t a problem – but it really wasn’t that bad at all. It took about six minutes, and hurt intermittently for about half that time; the rest was just uncomfortable, like having your annual exam. My gyn did prescribe a cervix softener to use the night before and a muscle relaxant to use the day of the procedure, plus a numbing agent during the procedure, all of which probably helped quite a bit. I was very lucky and did not have any cramps at all, probably due to the muscle relaxant. So anyway, I would definitely recommend it to anyone who’s considering it – although of course there’s always some risk of complications or bad cramping, with the proper medication the insertion really isn’t bad at all.
AnonInfinity
I wish mine had given me a cervix softener (or that I’d known to ask) because mine was really really painful. The pain didn’t last that long, though. Just for a couple of minutes after the insertion and then I had cramping for the rest of the day. Despite the pain going in, I’m completely happy with my decision to get it.
Merabella
Agreed. If I had to do it over again I would totally do it, but definitely ask for the cervix softener.
Merabella
For those of you who love fly lady, do you have any experience with the Rubba Sweepa? I’m thinking of getting it to help with the pet hair situation at our house. Is it worth the $13 + shipping?
RRugosa
Get a clean old-fashioned scrubbing brush, keep it just for pet-hair. Dampen the bristles verrrry slightly. Go over the area very lightly, in a circular motion. Pick hair off bristles. Repeat until done. I’ve tried all the latest whiz-bang inventions for pet-hair, and this works well and is as fast as any other method I’ve tried.
Merabella
Thanks. I’ll try that.

I have a strategy question. I am a rising 3L and have worked at the same firm for two summers now. I have it on good authority that they are likely to make me an offer. I’m in a small market, and it’s a small firm, but a big firm for this city. There are no other summers.
So, my question is this: if they make me an offer, should I try to negotiate the salary? I don’t want to put them off, but I also don’t want to end up as one of those statistics who make 10k less a year because I didn’t ask for it. I’m also scared of the whole idea that if you start out making less money, it sets you up to make less your whole career.
Your thoughts?
No Problem
Negotiate. What do you have to lose? The worst they would do is say no.
AnonInfinity
I agree with No Problem — negotiate. I asked for slightly more even though my firm pays top of the market. I didn’t get the bump, but I accepted anyway, and no one seems to hold it against me at all.
anonz
Doesn’t hurt to ask! You can even say something like “is there any room to move on the salary?” if you don’t feel comfortable directly asking for more.
mamabear
I don’t think “is there any room to move on the salary?” is firm enough. I’d just answer, “no.”
You need something to back it up. “I was expecting $y based on ___, ___ and ___.”
January
I am inclined to say no, partly because as a new graduate, you haven’t accumulated enough experience to make yourself especially valuable to them, and as such, you’re not in a strong bargaining position. Others may disagree – I’m curious to see responses.
TBK
I disagree in this one particular case (i.e., would *never* extrapolate to NY, DC, LA, etc.). The value she has is that she’s been with them for two summers. She’s a known quantity. Plus, there are no other summers. They’ve invested two summers in her already. If she walks away, they’re stuck at ground zero looking for a new junior associate.
OP
I love this answer!
tdevil
Agree with TBK. Remember, many businesses lowball women with salary with thethe expectation that we will not negotiate for our worth. Also, would encourage you to seek out other jobs, event if you are 100% sure that you will take this one. It gives you more confidence to negotiate if you have other viable counteroffers.
AG
I agree with TBK. The OP should say the same thing during her negotiation.
karenpadi
Yes, but don’t expect much leeway. . . New associates are usually money losers for the first year.
Salaries and bonuses are ultimately based on billing rate and hours billed. So ask about the billing goal (recorded, billed, or collected?) and what your hourly rate will be. First year associates should expect about 25% of gross (rate times hours) (that percentage goes up to 33% at 3 to 5 years and up to 45% or 50% for senior attorneys). With your clerk experience, you might go up to 28% but I would be surprised. Maybe 28% would be a good starting point. . .
Also don’t forget to ask about bonuses and how those are structured.
OP
Are these percentages pretty common nation wide, or only used in huge cities? I just want to speak their language.
karenpadi
I know they are common in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Colorado, and California. Maybe the other women can help?
JessBee
This is a great point. I agree totally.
Blonde Lawyer
Yes. Know what other firms pay if you can. If you are worried about losing the offer you can accept the position but still negotiate the salary. You can say something like “I absolutely want to work here but based on my market research I thought you were would offer Y as a starting salary. Can you do that?” If the answer is no, try “can we compromise on x?” If no, then say, “well, I”ll take it anyway” with a smile.
Senior Attorney
And don’t forget there are areas to negotiate other than salary dollars. Maybe more time off (maybe not realistic if you’ll be expected to bill a ton of hours, but in a small market it could be something to think about), or bonuses, or a car allowance, or whatever.
OP
I have never negotiated a job offer before. How do you bring up these kinds of things?
Terry
There is a lot of advice out there on the web. YMMV, but in my case I said ‘This is an interesting first offer, I was thinking more like $ABC’.
SH
Something like, “based on x, y, and z, I was expecting you to say $$$. Is there a way that we can still get close even without salary? How much are days off worth? Could I get a bonus to make up the difference?”
Bluejay
Don’t forget you can negotiate things other than salary. karenpadi is right that new associates are usually a net financial loss for the firm. But you could negoiate a guaranteed minimum raise after your first year, or a higher bonus, or vacation days, etc.

Nordstrom question:
I bought a dress last fall, wore it once and packed it away (it was a winter dress), and I just pulled it out of storage and noticed that the stitching is coming undone on the side. Is this something I could bring back and see if they could exchange it for a similar item or repair for me? I’ve lost the receipt but still have the credit card I used to purchase it.
v
Probably. Nordstrom’s customer service is THE BEST.
I ordered a bunch of stuff during the anniversary sale, but a pair of shoes never arrived (even though UPS tracking claims it was delivered). I went on Nordstrom’s live chat this morning to explain the situation, and the rep 1) apologized multiple times (even though it was no doubt UPS’s fault); 2) internally reported the shoes as “stolen” and issued a refund; and 3) asked if I would like to reorder the shoes, at the sale price. This took all of three minutes. At any other store, this would have been a huge hassle. Nordstrom just takes care of it.
rosie
I am really glad to hear this. I returned something to Nordstrom via USPS in mid-July and they still have not received it, so I will chat with them and give them the tracking number, hopefully I can get similar resolution.
EC MD
To piggy back, I ordered several things at NAS, and then returned a pair of boots and a watch in the same box. I got an email that said that they were processing the return of the boots, but didn’t mention the watch. On livechat Monday, I asked about it. Five minutes later? “I am now processing the return of the watch.” No discussion of where it was, whether it was actually in the box, etc etc etc. Just processed the return. It makes me order with confidence with them in the future.
SF Bay Associate
Yep, I ordered some cufflinks which never arrived in my big order box. That or they were lost in the packaging, but I’m virtually certain they were accidentally left out at distribution. NAS online chat lady said “no problem,” credited my account, and noted on the file that I should get the sale price when the cufflinks I ordered get back in stock so I can re-order them. Nordie’s FTW.
Anon
I had the same thing happen to me 5 years ago with a pair of $300 boots from jcrew. You’re not kidding – it was such a gigantic hassle getting my money back for those boots (and I really just wanted the boots! Was sad. They ran out of my size in the meantime.). As a result, I have never shopped online with jcrew again, it was that bad.
Seattleite
I’d definitely ask them to repair it for you. Their in-house tailors should be able to do it no problem. Given Nordie’s customer service, they’d probably take it back also, but I lean against doing that for 1) small flaws 2) that are easily fixed 3) on a long-ago purchase.
Bluejay
They’ll definitely repair it for free if they don’t have it in stock anymore, and if they do have it in stock they’ll give you the option to have it replaced or repaired.
emcsquared
I bought a suit from Nordies in 2006 (was that really 6 years ago? eep) and the hem on the pants keeps coming undone – every time I bring it in, they hem the pants back up for free, no questions asked. I would definitely ask for a repair if you like the dress and it still fits.
Anna D.
This may sound snarky, but I really really don’t mean it that way: I am amazed that someone who HATES cuffs and HATES pants pockets actually likes PATCH pockets?? (Or, put another way: patch pockets are to me what you cuffs and pants pockets are to you – anathema! they should all be banned!)
:-)
LadyEnginerd
THIS!
To each her own, BUT… to me, the pockets on my “real” clothes shouldn’t look like the pockets on my lab coat. Patch pockets make me feel like I should just give up and buy a pocket protector already.
nona
They just feel lazy – like you forgot about them and just slapped something on at the last minute. Have you even seen a guy’s suit with patch pockets? I don’t think I have – they’ve always (always!) been the welt pockets, with the flap out or tucked in.
Patch pockets feel very grandpa-cardigan.
Anony
So since last year I’ve been looking for a pair of ankle length black pants–which I seem to see in magazines all the time–but I can’t find any in person. My office is casual enough where I could wear them on non-court days. Does anyone have any idea where I can find a pair? The only place I’ve seen anything is J.Crew, and their pants don’t seem to fit me well at all. Plus the Minnie Pant is made out of really unflattering fabric, at least for me.
I usually where a 2 or a 0 in most places. Thanks!

How tall are you?
AIMS
Try the Gap. A friend of mine just got a pair there in black and in red that she likes. I think the “really skinny” but am not sure.

I just bought a pair at Target in a ponte material that I lurve. I was excited to find them for $24.99, as I don’t think I’ll wear them that often (and certainly not enough to warrant the very Minnie Pant). Also, they seem to fit me better than the Minnie Pant from J.Crew. I’m curvy and J.Crew pants are decidedly not.
I’ll include the link to the Target site in another message.

I think these are the ones I have: http://www.target.com/p/mossimo-womens-ankle-stretch-pant-fit-3-assorted-colors/-/A-13960305

I have these from ponte knit ankle zip pants from J. Jill: http://www.jjill.com/jjillonline/product/itempage.aspx?BID=270351641&item=Q7014X&h=M&sk=M&ac=search&q=ponte%20knit%20ankle-zip%20pants
They’re really comfortable but may be too casual for an attorney.

I like the Gap’s “Slim Cropped” black pants for this.

OMG, just bought a pair at TARGET and they are amazing, and only $22!!!

Does anyone have any experience with “silent migraines”–i.e. headache-less migraines that involve a lot of dizziness? If so, any insight into triggers and medication would be very much appreciated. My sister has been suffering from this for years (we think this is it, at least).
L
Has she been to a neurologist and diagnosed with this? I only ask because I know there are a number of conditions that present as migraines (I have one) and actually aren’t. If she hasn’t she should go ASAP.
For me, some of my pain is due to fluorescent lighting, as well as really cold food/drinks. She should keep a journal of daily activities for a few weeks and see if she can spot a pattern.
v
It might be an inner ear infection that is throwing off her balance.
Blonde Lawyer
Also look into sleep apnea. I had the strangest constantly inflamed ear tubes but no infection plus dizziness and shortness of breath. Turned out to be part of my sleep apnea b/c when that was diagnosed and treated, the rest went away.

My migraines come in a few flavors, and vestibular migraines are one of them. The manifest as nausea and dizziness, and respond the same way as a regular migraine – to a triptan abortive. I also take a regular daily preventative that has helped reduce occurrence of all types, although I still get them – probably more than my neuro would like, but he’s not pushy about trying new stuff if I’m ok.
Triggers for me: stress, barometric changes, hormones, computer screens and fluorescent lights and some really tannic wines. Also, if I’ve got a migraine, I have serious photophobia and misophonia, and perfumes will make it worse, but not trigger a headache. Triggers are personal, highly variable, and not really that useful for me. Things besides meds that really helped were getting glare screens for my monitors at work, and turning off/removing some of the light bulbs overhead – I had a marked increase in headaches after an office move to a location with a lower ceiling, and this helped. Some people have had luck wearing FL-41 tinted glasses, per a study done at Moran Eye, and there are a few commercially available migraine-reducing glasses out there, too.
Triptans first, though. Frova is my new BFF.

This is very helpful–I’ll pass this on to her, thank you! And good luck.

Oo I missed this reply and replied below – Yes. Vestibular migraines. Mine aren’t this frequent, so I’m not on daily medication, but over-the-counter Aleve helps me immensely if I start feeling “off” like one might be on its way. Generally a larger than recommended dose, but this is at the suggestion of my neurologist.

How is your vision? Any aura? There is such a thing as an ocular migraine which I’ve had
Anon
I get the ocular migraines all the time! Completely annoying. Inderal eliminated them for me, but I went off of it because of some side effects (but my mom has successfully taken it for decades). My biggest trigger is glare, I wear sunglasses any time I’m outside even f it’s not that sunny.
Batgirl
She’s literally been to 40 doctors over the past few years–including neurologists, cardiologists, ENTs, and migraine docs. She’s got a new migraine doctor she’s seeing next week, but I thought I’d see if people had any experience. Thanks for the suggestions!
L
Does she get any wooshing in her ears with her dizziness – think like a listening to a seashell?
oclg
This happens to me about every 6 months and lasts about 3 weeks, with lingering pain like tmj for a few more. Every doctor I went to said that it was a sinus problem and obuse a steroidal nasal spray to create more room for air flow through my eustachian tubes. Is there something that I can actually do about it? Dear lord I hope so…
oclg
And I have a night guard for tmj, which might be helping, but it’s hard to tell.

I’ve never heard them called that, but I do get this sometimes (often in conjunction with a headache, but sometimes on it’s own). A few things I can offer: 1) Weather seems to be a definite trigger, particularly changes in weather (when it’s hot one day and suddenly cold the next), also, storms. So it might help to watch the weather and at least be ready.
2) Allergy medicine seems to help a good bit, as does sudafed/sinus medicine.
3) I went on Topamax for a while, and found it very helpful. I ultimately stopped taking it, because it made me “mentally foggy”, but this actually wasn’t a huge problem for most things, but I was concerned about it when in court (litigation attorney). Before I started in law, it wasn’t a problem at all. My biggest issue was that I would have a little trouble speaking – that is, I would get that “what’s the word” problem a lot, and I would start a sentence and not be sure how to finish it, gramatically speaking. Not a huge deal if you’re not in a profession that requires frequent off-the-cuff speaking, though.
4) Chewing seems to help. I feel better when I eat, or chew gum.
5) Nasal irrigation has helped a lot, too. I’ve had fewer problems since I started doing it nightly.
6) My problem went away for a year or two after I had my wisdom teeth out. It eventually came back (I guess that whatever extra space that created eventually filled itself in?), but perhaps there’s something that can be looked at in her teeth or jaws that might be creating or aggravating the problem?
Good luck. It’s an annoying problem, I know!
Elysian
I get what has been diagnosed as Vestibular migraines – no aura, headache eventually, but mostly the headache is just a result of the world spinning so much. So, so much spinning, and then I get nauseous. It’s like being uncontrollably motion sick, or way too drunk, all without doing anything at all. I have no real idea what my triggers are, but if I take Aleve when I feel it coming on I can usually kill it before it gets too bad.
They’re debilitating for me, I’m sorry your sister is having trouble.
MelD
Has she talked to a dentist? She may have TMJ, which can cause a wide array of symptoms that will likely worsen if she gets stressed. I now have a bite guard to use at night, and that’s definitely helped a bit, but it hasn’t solved the problem 100%.
Anonymous
Is she on birth control? I started getting dizzy spells about 6 months after I started the pill. It turned out to be caused by the hormones and they stopped entirely when I stopped taking the pill.

My friend was recently diagnosed with labyrinthitis (the viral kind) and has been dealing with the aftermath of the infection. Her symptoms sound similar to your sister. If you’re not sure it’s migraines, you may want to ask her doctor about it.
RussiaRepeat
This is very late, but I get ocular migraines due to stress (blind spots growing until I can’t read, look people in the eye, etc.). I have a migraine drug (Tripto-something?), but I rarely take it because it makes me extremely sleepy and the aura usually goes away in 20-30 minutes with a Diet Coke and a couple advil. I did get checked out by a neuro-opthamologist where I was diagnosed because the episodes were so frequent I was convinced I had a brain tumor, but it turned out I was just really stressed about the 2008 presidential election (seriously!). I have also given up red wine because I had a couple of full-bore migraines after drinking it, but haven’t noticed any other triggers.
Anon
When I was in the midst of leaving my last (awful) job I was having them every day. Not cool.
eek
Yup, mine were related to extreme stress as well. I got them at least once a day, if not more, for a month. I also have regular migraines with aura.
rosie
Are the pants too tight on the model? I thought you weren’t supposed to get the bunching/lines in the front? I’m generally not a fan of how flared they are…not my style.
nona
I think the bunching is due to her jutting her hip out. The pulling doesn’t look like it would be bad if she were standing up straight.
Blonde Lawyer
Lately, I feel like I am on the show PUNK’d. I have been having the most bizarre moments.
I’m helping another attorney with a project so I’m working with his legal assistant. She has been around forever. I just had to teach her how to redact a document. I am amazed that someone can be a legal assistant for 20+ years and have never redacted before. I don’t think this was someone being “above” the project. She legit had the deer in the headlights look. I even had to explain that when you redact with magic marker you have to photocopy twice (ie-re-copy the copy, not just the original twice.) Which makes me wonder, how has this attorney gone through his career without needing to redact? Has he just done it himself?
SF Bay Associate
FYI… we use black highlighting to redact, print that copy, then scan that to PDF for filing. It is tidier than magic marker, and more forgiving since you can un-highlight easily if you make a mistake instead of having to redo the whole page as with physical redaction.
Gail the Goldfish
I would be surprised were it not for the fact a plaintiff’s attorney last week sent me a “redacted” document that he’d sharpied through and copied. Dude, I can clearly read what was supposedly redacted. Put some effort into it.

My sister is having her second baby boy in 2 weeks. I would like to bring something to the hospital for the baby (as well as for the 3 year old big brother) but I am at a loss as to what. I have already bought everything under the sun for nephew #1 and I won’t know the name in advance so I can’t personalize anything. Any ideas?
SAB
How about a kid-friendly camera (Fisher Price?) so the big brother can document all the cool things for his little bro? I doubt the new baby needs much, but mom might appreciate some yummy take-out. You have so much stuff to drag home from the hospital that I would likely suggest delivery of gifts to the house. A hot meal or two those first couple of weeks is always a nice thing.
Research, Not Law
For big brother: paint-with-water books, reusable sticker books, playdough, puzzle, or any other independent and quiet toy.
For baby: Baby books, chew toys, crinkle toys. The baby books and toys were in sorry shape from my first child and our older child was surprisingly possessive of them, so we got all news ones.
AMNY
My friend just had her second son and I got both boys personalized capes and superhero masks from Etsy (each had their initials on the back). My thought was that the boys could form a super-duo in the future, and the older brother could start with now.
Lila
I love this idea! can you recommend an esty vendor?

Random… but…. I just wanted to say that I was very impressed by all of the ladies I saw today in court. Normally I only notice the random professional wearing a suit with gold glitter shoes. This was not the case today. Today, I feel like all of the female attorneys (I assume) really brought it. Everyone looked so well put together, professional and fashionable all at once. Good job ladies. That is all.

That’s so nice to hear!
I’m in NYC and occasionally find myself in the middle of a Law & Order taping on the courthouse steps and it always feels like that. I look up and wonder why everyone around me is suddenly so well groomed and good looking. How nice to have that happen in real life :)

Which court, will you share?

Sorry, that was to the OP…maybe there were some ‘R E T T E S there who need the shout out….

While I love tweed suits, the extreme flare of the pant legs puts me off. There’s something a little less than professional-looking about it. I would like the suit a lot better if the pant legs were a little straighter. Also, I think it’s a mistake to spend a lot of money on a suit or other garment that is likely to go out of style before you’ve gotten your money’s worth of wear out of it. As someone who went through the first round of bell bottoms in the late 60’s and early 70’s, it’s not easy to taper that flare and still have the pants hang nicely.
anon
Chances are you would be cutting all the flare off by the time you hemmed them to your length anyway.
Anon
Just a heads up- Banana Republic is having a 30% off sale that ends today. I wish I could take advantage but I’m still on maternity leave with twenty extra pounds so I’m not quite sure what size I’ll be when it’s time to head back to work. Sigh.

Great suit! As a taller girl, I do like that I can typically wear heels with Rachel Zoe pants, which is sometimes a rarity!
