Would you wear a polka dot suit? I need to see this in person but I think I love it. http://www.whitehouseblackmarket.com/store/browse/product.jsp?maxRec=32&pageId=1&viewAll=true&productId=570067248&prd=Dot+Jacquard+Jacket&subCatId=&color=011&fromSearch=true&inSeam=&posId=22&catId=cat6219285&cat=&onSale=&colorFamily=&maxPg=1&size=
I saw it in People mag style issue which surprisingly had a lot of cute & affordable suggestions (unlike most style mags which assume you have an unlimited budget)
Not together like that, no. I might wear just the jacket for a casual look, but definitely not as a proper suit.
I would wear a suit with swiss dots like this (I’ve been looking for a swiss dot blazer with clean lines) but think the collarless jacket and ruffled skirt push this suit too far into ladies-who-lunch territory.
my dh are have both been in biglaw for about a year, with student loans. today, we did our taxes, and we owe the govt $20k on top of what has already been withheld. (We each claimed one exemption–apparently, that’s too many.) TWENTY THOUSAND. I know we are both incredibly lucky to be making the salaries we do, but we live in a high COL area and student loans and UGH. It just feel so sad to write a check for $20k in one fell swoop. majorly bummed today.
still a democrat though.
If the only deduction you have other than the standard deduction and student loans – well, yeah, taxes will suck. Talk to your accountant for tax planning – should you change your withholding, should you make quarterly estimates etc….? What are you doing to reduce your taxable income? Are you maxing your 401k?
We are maxing out our 401ks. I think that we will need to see an accountant and adjust our withholdings going forward. Thanks for the advice, everyone.
Think about it this way- 1. you have the ability to pay it, which is great. and 2. if you had it so it was withholding properly and were getting money back, it means you gave the irs an interest free loan. This way, your 20k got to work for you during the year.
It sucks, but it’s better to pay than get a refund, because you got the time value of your money, rather than the government getting it.
It’s only an interest-free loan if you don’t have to pay a penalty on it. My understanding is that you pay a penalty if you don’t withhold at least as much taxes as you owed the previous year. In other words, this year they may not have to pay a penalty, but if they owe $20,000 again next year, they will have a penalty. This might be a good time to see an accountant, have him/her review your TurboTax calculations and plan for 2013 taxes.
My husband and I also end up owing with just regular deductions (about 4k this year, but we make college faculty/staff salaries). We revamped things for next year, but we’re each going to have to claim 0 dependents, withhold at the higher single rate, and take out an extra combined $250/month to hopefully break even. Sometimes the calculations just don’t work for some people, if you don’t have the standard deductions that it expects you might have (particularly children — that makes a big difference).
I know just how you feel. High COL area plus renting property, not owning, plus no kids = enormous taxes. It just generally sucks. Also still a democrat, but not particularly happy about it for a few weeks in April :)
well I came out of this weekend with a moral hangover the size of Russia.
Anyone else do anything unbelievably stupid they’re gonna regret forever this weekend?
I spent Saturday sitting on the couch from 10am to 1am minus several breaks doing doc review while watching back to back select episodes of Alias across all five seasons. Feeling like Ken Watanabe in Inception – an old woman filled with regret.
Unless you killed someone, it’s probably not worth regretting forever.
alas, it’s in the “did something that is going to hurt a lot of people and cause a lot of bad feelings all around and everyone WILL remember it forever” category. *Sigh* LIve and learn I suppose…
I’m sorry for whatever happened, I hope that you and everyone involved gets through whatever is going on.
And we all make mistakes!
Anyone else stuck at work and watching Oscar red carpet arrivals online? So far I’m not in love with any of the dresses, but I do like Jessica Chastain’s and she is often a big miss for me, despite being stunningly beautiful. So I’m glad to see she’s wearing something pretty that fits.
Not at work, but watching at home. Favorite so far… Jennifer Lawrence.
I’m just watching the red carpet. Don’t really care about the actual awards, although I’d like to see Argo win.
Yeah I really like Jennifer Lawrence’s dress. I think it’s exactly the dress that they were predicting she’d wear. She works with Dior so that was known. I also liked Reese Witherspoon’s dress on TV. Not as much in pictures. Her hair looks gorgeous.
I like Jennifer Lawrence’s dress a lot too. The color isn’t my favorite but it fits her like a glove & her hair and make-up are so pretty. Love the blue & black color of Reese’s dress but not wild about the fit or fabric. I can see how it looks better on TV though. Zoe Saldana is a near miss for me – if she’d lose the belt & bow I think I would love it but there’s just way too much going on.
My favorites are Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Seyfried. Worst Anne Hathaway. Helena Bonham Carter’s witchy look has gotten real old, why doesn’t she shock us by actually wearing something nice?
Quvenzhané Wallis looks adorable!and her purse is the bestest.
Melissa McCarthy’s stylist needs to be fired. that…thing she is wearing is a disgrace.
So does Anne Hathaway’s (is it still Rachel Zoe?) Why is she wearing something that looks exactly like what girls my age wore to their bat mitzvahs 15 years ago on the biggest night of her career?
I agree, Melissa McCarthy’s dress was awful. Did you see Octavia Spencer? She looked gorgeous, proof you don’t have to be a size 0 to look good at the Oscars. Just a really flattering dress, and she looked great. Melissa McCarthy needs to hire Octavia’s stylist.
I thought Octavia Spencer looked beautiful. She has developed a relationship with a designer (Tadashi Shoji) who knows what looks good on her and makes dresses for her. That makes the difference.
Charlize Theron’s dress has told everyone to have a _/!!!
Has anyone used the dating site howaboutwe? What are your impressions? Considering dipping a toe back into dating, probably looking for what a lot of This Site readers are looking for – guys around my age (mid 20s in my case), educated, employed, not serial killers, etc.
Hm….that sounds kind of interesting, but also a little intimidating.. (though I’m not exactly sure why.) I’d be interested to see if anyone’s used this site before!
