Rag & Bone Durham Boots Something on your mind? Chat about it here. Rumor has it that autumn is right around the corner, and I'm still seeing a lot of the moto/Western/bootie trend. If, like me, you've always drooled over the Rag & Bone boots, note that ShopBop has these lovely brown Durham boots marked 30% off, down to an almost reasonable $367.50 (from $525). (They also have these kind of hip ankle-strap flats from Jeffrey Campbell on sale.) Nice. Rag & Bone Durham Boots P.S. I just got an email announcing Bloomingdale's “biggest clearance event of the season” — FYI! (L-4)

Sales of note for 6/4/25:

  1. Anyone have suggestions of where to go wedding dress shopping in the Boston or Providence (or anywhere in between) areas? I’m looking for a low cost dress. I’ve googled it, but hearing personal recommendations would be great!

I looked at Vows and hope to go there if I don’t find one this time, but I’m looking to go next weekend (someone just told me they’ll be in town) and they don’t have open appointments then.

    1. Not in Boston so I can’t help with local spots, but for lower cost wedding dresses, I’d look at off the rack options. Nordstrom and Lord and Taylor both have a lot of online selections. Jcrew and BHLDN do too and go on sale a lot. You might try a salon to get a sense of the shape you like and then try off the rack. One of my good friends did a Nicole Miller off the rack for her wedding and styled up with pretty jewelry and shoes looked amazing. Total cost was under $500, with sales, etc.

    2. I got my dress at Manhattan Bridal in Dedham MA for an amazing price just last month :)

    3. I bought a Da Vinci wedding dress that I saw in a bridal magazine and loved. Turned out the brand is cheaper than David’s Bridal and only sold in lower cost city stores. I bought mine in Lewiston Maine but I remember seeing online that they sold it in stores in Fall River and New Bedford Mass. You should check out the brand and then see where near you the dresses are sold.

    1. I really like lavender, coral, certain shades of turquoise, or mint with navy, plus a third neutral color like gray or cognac.

What about a fitted v-neck cardigan (personally I think crew neck ones tend to look frumpy) or sweater blazer in one of those colors, a string of chunky beads in on of the other colors, plus coordinating earrings? With the pattern in the lace of the dress, I would keep the necklace in a relatively simple shape and for length, be sure it hangs right around the collar of the dress rather than draping down your chest.

  2. There was a question the other day about recommendations for a computer for school – I’ve got a similar request for recommendations, but I’m looking for something to replace my eight year old (eight!!!) macbook that I used when I was in school.

I am looking for something cheap (under $500?) that I can use for facebook, internet banking, hulu/netflix, storing iphone pictures (or is that in the cloud now? I’m not very technical)…very basic stuff. I love my mac, but it’s on its last legs, and I just can’t justify the cost of a new one for what I use it for these days.

The only “serious” reason I can foresee using this computer for in the future would be to update my resume/prepare cover letters (I’ve been thinking about making a move soon) – can you do that kind of stuff in google docs? Would I need Word?

Has anyone made a personal laptop purchase recently? What did you buy and did you like it?

    1. For what you need, it sounds like you should look into a netbook.

I personally would still create a resume in Word or a similar program rather than google docs, because sometimes google docs has formatting that doesn’t translate properly.

I bought a laptop relatively recently, but it was for more than you need and so cost a bit above your price range. You should be able to find something decent for below that in the netbook or cheap notebook range, though you may want to consider going a little bit higher for something that will last more than a couple of years.

    2. You may want to check out the option of upgrading the RAM memory and operating system of your existing Mac. I did this recently for a 6-year old MacBook – cost was under $100 – and my old machine now runs beautifully for most of simple tasks you’ve described (not sure abt movies though). I’m particularly happy about keeping the old machine because it is noticeably more robust than our other newer Airs.

There’s plenty of g**gle-able and user-friendly info on how to do these upgrades. I figured out what I needed to buy and picked it up at a B&M shop where I got some help with the RAM installation (screwdriver required). The OS upgrade can be done on-line or may require ordering an installation disk from Apple, depending on how old your current one is.

  3. It’s been a long day but I’m happy to report I successfully completed my 50k trail race today. Maybe I won’t be able to get out of bed tomorrow but right now I just feel happy and proud.

    1. Whoah! Congrats! You should be proud! How long did it take you to train for it? Have you always been a runner?

      1. I started running cross country about 15 years ago, and marathon & up distance for the past 7 years. I run year round but have been specifically training for this race about 3.5 months. I’m sore today but thankfully it’s not too bad.
