  1. Negotiating salaries nowadays is even more fraught with peril thanks to fears of the economy. I work at a law firm and am interviewing for an inhouse position, so hopefully salary negotiations will come up soon. It’s hard, despite working in the research and now law for a lot of years, the truth is, all my jobs had predetermined salaries. I don’t know much about negotiating salary. I’m pretty typical “female” wrt to that – as long as it’s not insulting, I’m prone to accepting it. But that’s probably not smart.

Reinforcing this salary “shyness,” WaPo (I think) that had an article about how women who negotiate their salaries to the same level as men are seen as rude and aggressive, not go-getters like the men. And now, with employers feeling like it’s a buyer’s market, salary offers are even lower. I have to keep in mind that I have unique credentials and niche experience that the company needs, that I get headhunted frequently and that I deserve a fair salary. Wish me luck!

PS – I rocked a tailored pants suit at the interview :) I’m very glad I didn’t go for the traditional skirt suit and heels – too cute for the “power” interview day I had.
