Thursday’s Workwear Report: 365 High-Rise Pleated Trousers

Our daily workwear reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

I have to admit that I came across these lovely high-rise trousers from Gap after initially spotting the low-rise version. There was a moment when I considered adding the lower rise to my cart (they looked so good on me 20 years ago!), but then I remembered all the gymnastics that were required to avoid overexposure when I was reaching over my head or bending down to the ground, and I decided that my 40-something self was no longer up for it.

I’ll retreat back into the warm cocoon of the high-rise pant and forget there was a time when underwear exposure in low-rise pants was so prevalent that we even had a name for it.

    2. Haha, I like the idea in theory but know they would look dumb on me. The low rise option sounds even less appealing. Low rise pants didn’t look good on me 20 years ago either (or if I thought they did, I was delusional.)

    4. I can’t do the pleats. I think many of the longtime readers are hitting peri at once and have to dress around a thicker / poochier waist.

      1. Wit and Wisdom (Nordstrom) has a similar version to this that’s flat front. WAY more flattering. I’m plus sized and they are my favorite work pants (wear with a bodysuit top) at the moment.

      1. Allison Janney is like 10 feet tall and lanky. She can 1000% wear workwear. IDK how she’d do in a rufflepuff though or clubwear.

        1. What do you folks mean when you say ruffle puff? I’ve been picturing like the hill house nap dress, which I think would look good on a tall person. Is it something else?

          1. Nap dress is the definition of rufflepuff. But frilly nap dresses do not look good on the people who can rock structured business attire.

          2. A statuesque person would look silly in rufflepuff (so maybe tall shouldn’t be the measurement.)

    7. I’m tall and menopausal. So grateful for high-waisted wide-leg pants as I can finally find trousers & jeans that fit me and are comfortable and look good to me! I hadn’t bought pants since before COVID because the styles then in stores didn’t suit me.

      Doesn’t matter what the trend is, it will be good for some folks and not for others!

  2. Has anyone seen any good work dresses recently? Like the 2026 equivalent of the Resume Dress? I feel like I can wear what I’d used to wear to a shower or brunch to work now but I actually need work pieces designed as such. I don’t want to look like I just ran in from a PTA meeting all the time.

    2. Theory short sleeve midi shirt dress – wears like iron, doesn’t crease. Fit is more generous than typical theory if you do not skip leg day.

    3. I’ve been looking for this too. I have one I got from Marshalls. Sheath dresses also don’t look good with my hips so I need more of an A line. They’re been weirdly hard to find.

      1. +1 I got several like 2 years ago but finding anything now is a real struggle. Sheaths just dont flatter my shape. It’s quite frustrating.

    4. The Modern Citizen Inari dress is my power go-to. I have it in both colors. Size up.

    5. I like OGL Moves dresses. They are easy to wash/dry but have more serious looking options than what you might also wear to brunch.

      1. Where I struggle with this dress is, I can wear it.. what .. 2x/month? The pattern is so distinctive that repeating it weekly feels a little much. That or i just need to not care about repeating outfits whatsoever.

        I miss the days of having a closet full of sheath black, gray and navy dresses or pencil skirts + tops on rotation. Not saying that was the most stylish time in workwear fashion, but that was as close to a uniform as I think I’ll ever see in my career.

  3. I need a new iPhone. Mine actually works fine but is so old that websites aren’t optimizing for it and the battery life isn’t great. I don’t want the latest and greatest. I don’t need a ton of memory. I am also petite and don’t want a huge phone. Any ideas on which model to get? I don’t think I will get anything on trade in with Verizon which is where I have my plan. (It is an SE and still has a home button.)

    Has anyone bought a refurbished iPhone with success? Sites to recommend?

    1. My mom recently upgraded to one of the new 17 versions. She’s petite and it’s not too big for her.

      We’ve always gotten new phones through Best Buy with our Verizon plan. You may not get anything for your old phone, but they may have other promotions.

      They’ve been phased out, but you can still buy a refurbished model!

      I love it because it fits my hand and still has the home button. It’s also way cheaper and helps prevent excess electronic waste (ofc it eventually becomes e waste but not yet!).

      I literally buy everything I can used, for financial and environmental reasons, but I’m no martyr. My trendy wardrobe, original MCM furniture, nice car, and full suite of Apple products are doing just fine.

      1. Do you have any issues with website optimization on the newer SEs? That is honestly my biggest headache right now. And I love buying used for anything I can. It is always my goal so if you have a source for iphones, please share!

    3. I’ve successfully used Back market to buy used phones and laptops. I did have an issue with one laptop, and their return and replacement process worked flawlessly.

      1. +1 for backmarket, I’ve never had any issues with the tech I’ve bought from them.

    4. I don’t have a specific model to recommend, but I have bought all my iphones (3 or 4, I think) refurbished directly from Apple, and I have never had a problem with them. They seem brand new to me.

    5. I just accept I’ll need a new one every so often and get the newest version. I don’t think the savings on old models are worth the headaches.

      2. Same. When am forced into a new phone because performance issues on the current one have become annoying, I get the newest model in hopes that it provides the greatest amount of time before I am paying again BS prices for an electronic device.

    6. re: model vs age, I upgrade whenever the guaranteed security updates timeline runs out, and then run the new phone into the ground. So for me the sweetspot is “last year’s model” (ie refurbs and holiday sales available, but still 6 full years of committed software updates)

      If you’re not absolutely committed to iphone, you can get a much better priced midrange android with decent specs

      *yes, Apple is pretty nice about still pushing critical security patches to out-of-scope models, but I don’t rely on that

    7. I’m petite and want to keep my 12 mini going so I got a battery replacement this summer and it’s still working fine.

      1. I have small hands and I love my 13 mini! Praying they release another small phone when this gives up the ghost.

    8. My husband just bought a new 17e directly from Apple and adjusted quickly to the absence of the home button. It is about the same size as the SE. He got some trade-in credit for his old SE.

    9. when i looked into it recently ijust decided to get my son the cheapest 17, it was actually cheaper than i paid for my 16 and has all the same features. the big improvement is going to be the camera.

  4. I have a trip that will take me to both Raleigh and Chapel Hill next month during the week. I didn’t go to either school. I’d love some good recommendations for restaurants or just any unique places that are walkable. I think the plan is to stay in Chapel Hill. Will have a car but have zero familiarity with the roads.

    1. What type of cuisine and how fancy do you want? We have a lot of good restaurants in the area. In Raleigh, if you like art, our art museum is actually very good (and free; closed Monday and Tuesday). If the weather is nice, JC Raulston Arboretum and Dix Park are worth a stroll (Dix Park has some fun giant troll statues right now. And if you have young kids, the play plaza is awesome). Chapel Hill is the wrong shade of blue for me (IYKYK), but I think the short drive over to Durham for a wander around Duke’s campus and gardens is worth it.

      1. I tend to love the sort of “college town local favorites” that college kids or professors or student parents would like (so good food, not too fancy, not too expensive, floors not sticky during the week but possibly on game days). Like the Cheese Shop in Williamsburg (IKYKY).

        1. In Chapel Hill, if you want local color, try Suttons – countertops, booths, diner food. Top of the Hill (TOPO) is for when your parents are in town and they want to take you to a nice restaurant, good views, more upscale. Both are on Franklin Street, the main downtown drag.

            Monterrey’s and Root Cellar are farther from the main stretch, but I think of Monterrey’s as the place to take a crowd if it’s somebody’s birthday, and Root Cellar as the place to get coffee and breakfast on a nice day (maybe on the way into town).

        2. In Chapel Hill, you could see if Top of the Hill’s menu looks good to you. The burger places are Bun’s and Al’s. The burrito place is Cosmic Cantina.

          Chapel Hill can be snooty though, so in some ways the fancier, more expensive, clean floor Carolina Inn experience is equally representative! There are also a lot of places near campus where the food is not actually good.

          Italian Pizzeria III, Mediterranean Deli, and Gourmet Kingdom in Carrboro are the places I remember most fondly.

          2. IP3!!! Oh man, memory lane time.

            I’d also recommend Caffe Driade, which is a cool cafe in a forested spot off west franklin street. Chapel Hill also has a botanical garden close to UNC’s campus. Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro is a classic independent music venue. As for Raleigh, I have not lived there in a long time, but second the recommendation for the art museum.

            Don’t bother going to Duke, nothing to see there ;)

        3. So Player’s Retreat is the go-to NC State bar/restaurant, though I think it’s just fine. If you’re coming to NC, you might as well try some BBQ. Ole Time Barbeque if you want the authentic road side BBQ shack type experience. Other BBQ options: Longleaf Swine is good. People also like Sam Jones, though I don’t think it’s as good. The Pit is overhyped and you can skip it.

          For a quick lunch (and also close to the art museum), I like Guasaca (arepas). If you decide you want something a little fancier for dinner, The Stanbury is widely considered one of the best restaurants in town right now, but I have yet to try it because they don’t take reservations and you need to be there at like 4 to put yourself on the list for the night (they will give you a time, so you can get on the list and go do other things). Ajja is also trendy/good. And if you decide you want to go fancy/special occasion, Second Empire is by far my favorite.
          If you end up in Durham, Dashi is one of my go-to’s (Ramen). But there are a lot of good options in all 3 towns, really. The Triangle and Raleigh reddits are active and have good restaurant suggestions (well, at least 3 people will suggest the Olive Garden on Capital Blvd, but once you get past that meme response, the others are good)

          1. Oh I forgot the most important suggestion: While in Raleigh, get some frozen custard from Goodberry’s (multiple locations). It’s so delicious, and a Raleigh-only chain (well, Raleigh and oddly, Canberra, Australia)

    2. If in CH, you want to walk campus and Franklin Street. Check if there are any performances in Forest Theater. In Raleigh I would recommend the Oakwood area for architecture and good dining/bakeries (Oakwood Pizza, Standard, Crawford & Son), Yellow Dog, Edge of Urge, So & So Books etc. You can walk to the Executive Mansion too.

    3. I live in Cary and used to work in Durham. The traffic in CH is absurd, so if you’re staying there plan on extra time getting out of town.

      Raleigh is a bit far for just dinner and I think the restaurants are better in Durham anyway. The 9th street area in Durham or downtown Durham are pretty walkable and you can find parking easily. If you want to stick to CH and don’t want college student food, I really like Kipos.

    4. On a related note, Allen and sons used to be my favorite BBQ in the triangle area but I understand it closed during pandemic. Where do you all recommend for bbq?

    5. CH: Lantern, Hawthorne & Wood, Crunkleton (whiskey bar – ridiculous name, but lovely), Venable, Glasshalfull
      Raleigh: If you like beer, the Burial tap room (you can get food from the food hall next door), Whiskey Kitchen, Brodeto, Heirloom, Poole’s, Hummingbird

    6. In Chapel Hill, Vimala’s has great Indian food and really nice outdoor seating. Echoing Sutton’s for authentic southern food. Tiny bit more of a walk, Wedgewood Cheese Bar is an excellent option in Carrboro.

      No matter where you eat, enjoy walking around campus!

  5. Maybe a fun question for a gloomy Thursday – what’s the best concert you’ve ever been to? (I’ve been trying to get Harry Styles tickets for myself and my kiddo for the last few days hence the question!).

    2. I don’t in any way endorse his current behavior but I had floor seats to Kanye at the United Center in Chicago in 2008 and it was epic.

    4. I saw Jay-Z in concert back when he and Beyonce first came out with a few songs together and had not announced that they were a couple and during the concert he started singing Bonnie and Clyde and then Beyonce came out on stage to sing with him. It was amazing!

      I also saw No Doubt in a small venue and that was probably the best concert I have every been to.

      I took my then-14-year-old daughter to see One Direction at a huge stadium and it was like nothing I had ever seen before lol! The amount of screaming teenage girls was insane.

    5. In addition to the Eras Tour, MCR playing the Black Parade in Chicago last year and The 1975’s Halloween show in Detroit a couple of years ago. My music taste is stuck in my youth.

    6. I went to a festival in Europe a few years ago which was headlined by bullet for my Valentine. The crowd sing along was spine tingling, and I would call myself a moderate fan at best. The first round of Bilmuri’s AMS tour in the smaller venues was also amazing before he took off.

      1. Adding I went to a private Sum 41 show in 2007 that’s considered like holy grail live events by super fans. I went on accident because my aunt worked for the company organizing it.

    7. Red Hot Chili Peppers Californication tour. But I was also 16 and ALLLL of my friends and half of my HS was there.

      1. It’s funny, I don’t even like the RHCP that much any more, and this is still what comes to mind when someone asks about the favorite concert ever. I was in college at Berkeley and drove down to the Shoreline Amphitheater (for the first time) and it was just a magical evening. And they do put on a good show.

    8. PRINCE, once when I was 15 during the Purple Rain tour, and once when I was 35. Loved the Eras tour, though, and just got Harry Styles tickets for May!

    9. Bruce Springsteen’s ‘The Rising’ Tour. Not long after 9/11 and it was incredibly moving and cathartic. Plus he sounded amazing and was in truly top notch shape – that man has more energy than I’ve ever had in my life. So much of his catalogue is about speaking truth to power and it was an especially brave message at that time.
      Right behind that is the Foo Fighters opening for the Rolling Stones on their Bridges to Babylon tour (yes, I’m GenX). Dave was amazing, and he played a few Nirvana songs. I was less interested in the Stones, but they’re a great band in person and put on a tremendously entertaining show.

      1. I saw a private Foo Fighters show for AOL (back in the day).

        After last year’s Dave Grohl baby drama, ew. But a great concert.

      2. Mine is Bruce Springsteen and the e street band msg, 2000. For me it’s also kind of about the venue too. So levon helm at the ramble. The hold steady in the then dry McCaren pool. Jimmy Buffett at jones beach.

    10. John Williams conducting a bunch of soundtracks he composed played by the Boston Pops in the open pavilion at Tanglewood during a thunderstorm with lightening flashing across the sky – there was a solid hour or two before the rain rolled in and it was just other worldly.

    11. 2019 Rolling Stones in Houston. Charlie Watts was still on the drums, and I had sprung for club level seating. Oh the joy of a nice bathroom with no line.

      And I envy you your gloom. I am under the wretched southeastern heat dome. It is absolutely miserable here.

      1. I appreciate your complaint. It’s absurd that the days are this short and still this sweltering.

    12. Prince in the 2010s. Such an amazing artist. He switched between guitar, piano, signing seamlessly.

    14. Harry’s Love on Tour was pretty danged good :) I will be seeing him again in NYC in a couple of weeks!

      The Black Keys at Lollapalooza in 2010 are up there for me, along with the Rolling Stones at a stadium concert in 2006 and Chris Stapleton more recently.

      My most unexpected best live music experience was going on a solo post-dinner walk at a random conference, seeing a sign for a free concert, and wandering in…it was the Alabama Shakes right before they blew up. One of the most incredible live vocal performances I’ve ever experienced. You could just tell they were going to be big.

    15. I have two on opposite ends of the spectrum: Willie Nelson in a small club in the late 90s and the final KISS concert of all time at Madison Square Garden a few years ago.

      The Willie show was so intimate – I was standing about 15 feet away from him – and the whole room was just vibing together the whole time. Perfect.

      The KISS gig was pure spectacle. We were about halfway back in the arena and could actually feel the heat from the pyrotechnics. But again, the audience was deeply invested. Grown men in KISS makeup were openly crying as we slowly worked our way out of MSG after the show. It was ridiculous and fun and it felt like a community.

    16. P!nk Summer Carnival Tour. Incredible.

      Elton John, Medusa Tour, 2000, in Europe. Just him and his piano. Unreal.

    17. Lady Gaga in Jan. 2010 in a ~4000 person venue.
      Jay Z at Northerly Island in 2009 (approx 8000 seats).
      Jay Z and Kanye in the Watch the Throne tour in a stadium.
      Eras Tour with my kid was a whole experience and I have trouble comparing anything else to it. Every other show feel like comparing a local amusement park to Disney World.

        1. YESSS. My husband and I were lame late 20s lawyers while all the baby monsters were in bubbles and fun over the top costumes. It was an amazing show, and her subsequent Wrigley Field show did not hold a candle sadly.

          1. I brought my then 10 year old daughter. It was probably a bad decision as that era Gaga’s chatter was a bit spicy, but my kid seems to have emerged unscathed and thinks her mom is pretty cool! It was an incredible show!

    19. Jay-Z “Answer the Call” 9/11 Benefit concert…2009 at MSG. It was right when Jay-Z dropped The Blueprint 3. Amazing! Beyonce, Mary J, Alicia Keys, Pharrell all popped in.

  6. Oura ring or Apple Watch? Has anyone tried both? I had an early edition of the Oura but I have never had an Apple Watch. I want to count steps, monitor my HR trends, and and maybe monitor sleep although that kind of stresses me out.

    2. I prefer a Garmin or other fitness watch. I do have friends who have both for different purposes – I think they prefer Oura for sleep.

      I could never workout with a ring on, so I’m against an Oura for that reason.

    5. you might consider a Whoop also. i love my apple watch but primarily use it to find my misplaced phone and read messages on the go. it’s not the best for counting steps and I think HR trends is an extra level. i don’t like to sleep with my apple watch but it was fine for the 7 nights i needed to do to get the baseline and then i can go back in if i’m concerned.

      the whoop and oura are both fine. shuld be black friday sales on both. i’d take a look at some of the newer articles (NYT, WSJ) on which metrics doctors actually say are worthwhile. i know my elderly mom had a time where her apple watch said she was in afib. her doctor said eh, probably a misread if you’re feeling fine. she got nervous and called ER or 911 and the nurse she spoke to said yeah, come in, that’s accurate… and it turned out that it was accurate.

    6. Thirding the garmin rec—I’m all in on Apple ecosystem otherwise (phone, earbuds, iPad, etc) but didn’t love the Apple Watch—the only thing it did better than my garmin was call the phone to find it. The garmin has SO much better battery life, and I can also see texts etc (though not respond, but I never did that in Apple) and I much prefer the garmin for running on the rare occasions I do.

    7. I like my Apple Watch for counting steps, but the Garmin watches seem to be trendier now.

    8. +1 Garmin. Love my Fenix 7. It’s an old model now. 11 day battery and does everything.

  7. What should I do with pencil skirts that fit well but I last wore them regularly in like 2019 latest? I don’t need to dress formally every day for work, only occasionally for conferences and meetings and such. Do people even wear work skirts anymore?

    1. I do. I have a few of the no 2 pencil jcrew skirts and I just wear them with a sweater or a tucked in blouse. I put no thought into it.

    2. I just consigned most of mine. Kept the two that I still use for a suit when I need to, and the two that are tweedy and below-knee that look modern with knee-high sleek flat riding boots in winter.

    3. I donated my super bright wool pencil skirts but kept a few in black, grey, burgundy, and navy. I still wear them with knee high boots in the winter – as long as you keep your top more modern I think they’re pretty classic for office wear.

        I think this is good advice and sounds like it looks great. Ditto the poster above with flat boots. I do think we’ll see more of them soon styled a little differently than jcrew 2015. Like slim Jackie cardigan feels dated but a slightly oversized blazer feels more modern.

  8. Are dresses with a fuller 50s style skirt work appropriate? They look so good on me and I actually did get a lot of compliments wearing one to a work event, but they also feel a little dramatic. My office is not very buttoned up, so that helps. I’ll link some dresses in the comments.

      1. I wouldn’t call the first one a full 50s skirt – I picture the Dior New Look when you say that. It looks fine!

        The second one is styled so exaggeratedly that it’s hard to see past. Maybe with a cream c – ll – rless jacket and simple accessories it wouldn’t look costumey?

          1. There was a commenter a couple years ago which seemed to have some weird obsession with button-down c*llar shirts. To the point that Kat might have used that word as a spam flag.

    2. I think the first one looks fine. The polka-dots turn the style costume-y, in my opinion.

    3. They are both work appropriate and also a little dramatic. You would just have to own that.

    4. I think they’re fine as long as you don’t go full 1950s cosplay – dramatic winged eyeliner/red lip/etc. Or heck, if you’re a librarian or a teacher go full out!

    5. I don’t think either of these are dramatic at all and neither would raise an eyebrow in my conservative workplace assuming you are not wearing a huge crinoline underskirt with them!

  10. It finally happened, I cracked. I sit on several committees with this middle ages white dude who has introduced himself to me no less than 50 times over the 2 years we have worked together. Today I snapped and said ‘Hi Dude, We actually sit on a few committees together and meet regularly’

    Before someone comes to his rescue he definitely doesn’t have memory issues, it’s because I’m a woman, he remembers my junior male staff’s name just fine and he’s only been on the team 6 months.

    3. You have more patience than I do! There was a guy at my old job’s IP office who was just not good at networking, and the fourth time he introduced himself to me, I shook his hand and cheerfully said ‘yes, we’ve met several times’.

      1. Just out of curiosity (and not at all combatively!), did you not recall meeting this mom previously? Or you felt like she might not remember you, so introduced yourself again?

        1. No who you are responding to, but at games you usually arrive frazzled having had to get everyone and their stuff out of the house, find the field, and the brain takes awhile to engage fully.

      2. This is why I said “nice to see you” instead of “nice to meet you” if I’m at all unsure.

  11. I need to get a gift and the only clue I’ve been given is that the person really likes small batch bourbon. In my state, I have to go to an ABC store. What should I be looking for?

    1. Ask the people at the ABC. They don’t stock everything and sometimes the best stuff is lottery only.

    3. I wouldn’t try to buy a connoisseur something like this. Maybe a basket of foods designed to complement bourbon (whether in a drink or as a snack, like wine crackers)? Like, the really good expensive cherries?

      2. I’m a bourbon drinker/collector and I have plenty of rocks glasses, Glencairn glasses, staves for the Glencairns…..

    5. Bourbon balls? I’m from Kentucky & I’ve given these as gifts when I travel. Woodford Reserve has many options.

  12. For the person struggling yesterday to feed herself, I got a Tovala oven and do meal delivery through them and love it. The oven makes me feel like all of my Jetson’s dreams are coming true (I just scan a QR code and it cooks my food!), but the meal delivery also just comes with real food that I assemble and then pop in the oven. It can bake, air fry, steam, broil, etc. and it automatically cycles through the settings. I’ve also lost a few pounds on it (without meaning to) because the meals have more veggies than I’d eat on my own and are mostly just made up of simple proteins, carbs and veggies.   13. has anyone bought a nice microwavable heating pad lately? we mostly use either plugged-in ones or hot water bottles at home but I lost the one that I send my son to school with for his stomach aches… they can only microwave there. i don’t like rice and i feel like some of the other microwavable ones i’ve had smell after a while. the one i bought previously for him (a hottle?) was apparently discontinued.

    1. Two options are Warmies and those combo heat/cold gel packs that you can either freeze or microwave.

    2. My mom and I both use the Origins Hug. Mine have lasted for years. She tends to over-microwave them and burn them.
