brown ballet flats

I love this minimal ballet flat from Reiss. While not quite in toe cleavage territory, the vamp is very low, which really works here I think.

The shoes come in tan and black at Nordstrom, and Reiss.com has them in tan and a brown suede (also lovely).

Where we used to do nude heels or flats, I tend to think this medium tan brown is the more modern iteration, whatever your skin tone is. Lovely.

(If you are looking for a more exact match to your skin tone (aka “nude for you”), a lot of the specialty brands have shut down — Naturalizer is your best bet in 2026.)

The shoes are $298, available in US sizes 5-10.

  1. Heading to Amsterdam for the first time and looking at a Marriott property to stay in. Any recommendations? Also planning to add a couple of days in Belgium, maybe Ghent but open to all ideas, tips and recommendations in Amsterdam and Belgium. Spouse and I have both been to Europe a lot before and don’t love packing days with too much touristy stuff but definitely love doing unique things. Also we are big foodies so would LOVE foodie recs!

    1. Belgium is not popular on this board but we went over winter break and had a great time. My favorite cities were Antwerp and Bruges, although Bruges is extremely touristy and is really the only place we encountered huge crowds and a lot of people speaking English so I might avoid it if you aren’t into touristy experiences. I also really liked Brussels even though it doesn’t have a great rep. I wasn’t a big fan of Ghent. I think Brussels or Antwerp might be the best place to base yourself for easy day-tripping around the country.

    2. Just dropping a few favorite food spots in Amsterdam: Sampurna on Singel for rijstaffel, Tjin’s for sandwiches, The Seafood Bar for a great raw bar.
I lived in Brussels for a while, and I would also recommend Antwerp over Ghent. I just think there’s more to do, and the city has a more fun feel.

    3. We had Indonesian at the food hall in Amsterdam and it was so, so good. I’d vote Antwerp over Ghent.

    4. Go to Fort Resort Beemster for an amazing spa/sauna experience that you won’t find in the US.

Walk (and bike) as much as possible.

    5. We went on the Hungry Birds Food Tour when we were in Amsterdam and it was a lot of fun.
The Straat street art museum was also fabulous.

    6. Go to Ghent!!!! The Marriott on the Korelei is lovely, and riiiight in the middle of town. For food, Cafe Norma is run by a friend of a friend and was so delicious that I went 3x when I was in town. There are also fantastic vegan options in town; I particularly like La Botansiste. If you like to ride a bike, there are bunch of ways you can borrow a bike to ride around the city.

  2. I’m going to be in Chicago for business soon — is there anywhere I should shop for work clothes? (Anything immediately in O’Hare?) I won’t have a ton of time but could make time for something I can’t get elsewhere in the Midwest.

  3. do you think we bombed Iran to distract from the Epstein files- or was that just an added bonus?

    1. I think the timing was probably affected by the release of information about Trump specifically in the files, but the plans had clearly been ready for a while.

      1. Honestly, I really do feel this way. I thought the wealthy running the world from pedo island was a conspiracy theory, yet look at Epstein. I thought election fraud was bogus, but I hear more and more about how Trump rigged the 2024 election – now there’s a report suggesting there were five ghost counties in swing states? I don’t know what to believe anymore.

        1. It’s challenging, because where does it stop?

At a certain point, it starts sounding like “all the conspiracies that make my side look bad are wrong, and all the ones that make the other side look bad are right”

          So that’s not great either

          1. Heaps of evidence, documentation, and receipts still go a long way, right? And learning who to trust and who not to trust is just part of life.

I think it also helps to recognize how different an impression even something like general audience/college undergraduate textbook history can give from what historians are publishing in academic journals based on the strongest evidence, let alone media narratives. People still believe evidence-free cover up stories from generations ago because media is faster and better funded.

          2. Certainly. But once documentation of evidence is provided, the reality threshold is reached and it is no longer a conspiracy theory.

          3. That’s not what happens though! Conspiracy theories are routinely regarded as conspiracy theories long after they’ve been documented.

    2. I think we bombed Iran (like Trump does for about 90% of everything) because it benefits Trump’s narcissism versus the country. I’d actually equally believe there was some financial incentive in it somewhere for him more than Epstein because being a grifter is his motivation for most of his life choices.

    3. I think he thinks being at war will solve all his problems. Many won’t want to impeach someone who is running a war. And if people rise up against this he will call it an insurrection and finally get martial law.

    4. bonus,
Israel saw an opportunity to eliminate its main enemy in the region, and the fool Trump had to play along.

  4. Does anyone know of a PLI or other good CLE on how the EU GDPR data privacy rule is structured and how it may differ from key US privacy laws like FERPA and HIPAA?

    1. GDPR is its own, stand alone privacy framework that is principles-based, not legislation based. I would start with IAPP resources, Lexology, ACC and perhaps ask AI to compare, but trying to find a CLE specifically–IMO, a comparison of our US patchwork and those laws specifically is an unlikely CLE.

You might find a “global health privacy laws” CLE for instance, but…not FERPA–the EU laws don’t at all distinguish special rights of students because the rights are more fundamental than a vocational status.

  5. is TSA and the airports really that bad or is instagram fake news? flying from laguardia early friday morning with my teen and one of their friends….

    1. i think it varies significantly by airport and by day of the week. and if any weather is thrown into the mix. some airports near us that were a disaster one day, are fine the next and visa versa. i know someone who arrived at 1pm for a 6pm domestic flight and barely made their flight on one of the “bad” days. how early is early? i think the earlier in the day the better

      1. For current information on the morning of your flight, take a look at tsawaittimes.com.

    2. TSA at O’Hare was fine this week and it’s spring break for a lot of Chicago area schools. No info on Global Entry though, we fly back Friday.

    3. Heavily depends on the airport, time of day, and weather, as other posters noted. I haven’t seen any issues flying in and out of SJC and San Diego in the last 2 weeks. I had a flight delay of 20ish minutes on one leg, but no issues getting through security.

In contrast, DFW just cancelled and/or significantly delayed flights due to weather earlier this week, but no issues with TSA as far as I know.

    4. I just flew out of LaGuardia this morning after missing a flight due to TSA delay Sunday evening. The wait Sunday was over two hours – the security line snaked around Terminal C all the way to the parking garage. This morning the wait was over an hour. I’d suggest a 5:00 arrival for an 8am flight. No kidding.

      1. ^^Note that this was w/out precheck or Clear. The precheck line was like 5 mins, Clear was long but not as long as general

    5. Based on our local insta accounts and personal experiences of friends, ATL Hartsfield-Jackson has had very long wait times. Storms yesterday did not help.

  6. Going on a work trip for the first time. Spent a lot of time in Bay Area and SoCal but never in Sacramento. Best restaurants/ things to do? Also any worthwhile day trips as I have most of Friday free before flying out. First week of April, shocked to see how cold it is forecasted to be there. Coming from NE was expecting California sun :)

    1. Walking Capitol Mall and especially the Rose Garden is a nice way to spend an hour. Mother is my favorite restaurant (it is vegetarian though). If you are into beer, there are a ton of great local breweries with tasting rooms. Ruhstaller is my favorite.

  7. Any recommendations for an eyebrow filler? I have dark blonde hair, and my eyebrows are getting a bit sparse as I head towards 40. My makeup routine is fast and simple now, so preferably something easy to apply.

    1. I like the Anastasia pomade, applied with a small, stiff brush. Lots of color and very easy to apply. I am terrible at makeup but this does wonders for my wife but somewhat sparse eyebrows.

      1. oh good I just ordered that one in the sale. I’m a brunette going gray and trying to find a softer brown/taupe than the one I’ve been using.

    2. Thrive eyebrow gel. The color options are the best I’ve seen and it doesn’t come off until I take it off. I can do my eyebrows in just a couple of swipes and it looks really natural (I’ve had Anastasia and other brands sort of separate over a sweaty day).

    3. I use trish mcevoy eyebrow pencil and brush. Very natural if you use short strokes.

  8. Are the Valentinos with the rockstuds a classic, or have they passed their prime?

    1. I don’t see them as particularly edgy the way they used to be, but I think they still read as classic and not stale.

    2. Depends on the shoe, but some do read dated. I will say that Valentino has stepped up their game in making comfortable shoes with the new creative director. I’d encourage you to also try on their non-rockstar more boring shoes – lots of sensible heel heights now that fit my duck feet.

  9. Back again with the 70-year-old dad responding with minimal words. I just visited and he isn’t initiating conversations, everything is very yes/no. He’s moving around, he isn’t slurring, he remembers (some) things, but doesn’t seem to do the things he used to enjoy like watching reality TV.

What doctor should I try to get him to see and when? His PCP is scheduled for six weeks away and he doesn’t want to move it up or do any bloodwork beforehand. He’s on Xarelta and Benicar and we know he has an afib problem. I’d really appreciate some hive wisdom here.

    1. I would call his PCP and ask. My mom just ended up in the hospital with what started as a UTI that we’d never have known about otherwise.

      1. My immediate reaction was “maybe a UTI” as well. One of my family members suddenly started acting very depressed, and that was what it turned out to be.

    2. Definitely call the nurse hotline or his PCP. These are signs to follow up on stat. Hoping it is nothing serious!

    3. This would be an urgent care or ER situation for me if these are sudden changes. Maybe call the PCP first but it sounds like he might have had a minor stroke to me.

      1. This was my first thought. My dad has had minor strokes (and had nearly a fully blocked carotid for about a year after) and he was not himself personality wise, and a fun side effect of stroke is apathy. You’re just sort of an emotionless shell. It’s not great. Another fun side effect is irrational anger. Let’s just say, Christmas was pretty awful in 2025.

Please talk to a medical professional ASAP and bloodwork matters–they can find markers of cardiac events.

    4. OP here – if it were a UTI it wouldn’t have been happening since xmas, right? been talking to my aunt and she’s been noticing weirdness since xmas and I have too once we started talking about it.

      1. It could be a UTI! Elderly folks can have them for months with the only symptoms being cognitive

      2. You’d be surprised- my grandma had an undetected UTI for months with tons of weird symptoms in the line of what you’re describing. After a few days on an antibiotic her recollection speed and verbal reasoning improved dramatically.

        1. But like what do you say? My dad is less talkative but doesn’t agree with me that there’s a problem? She already interfered with the neighbors and he got miffed about that, so he’s cognizant of his surroundings and in charge of his faculties. Why assume he’d agree to these checkups everyone is recommending?

People are allowed to get older and decline.

          1. Lack of insight can be a symptom of conditions that are just as treatable at 70 as at 35.

  10. Ugh, DH’s aunt has sent around the family text for Easter, and I wish I didn’t have to go? The ILs are not toxic, exactly, but we do not enjoy their company at all. Everyone’s loud, thinks they’re the funniest person in the room, and there’s always way too much drinking for family holidays. Also, his aunts are incredibly judgmental, and we are not comfortable sharing anything personal with them. DH admits that he wishes he could opt out but feels too guilty to stop. I suppose I could stay home, but we already spent Christmas with my side of the family, so missing Easter with his would definitely raise some eyebrows.

    1. I’m not looking forward to Easter either, if it makes you feel any better. It’s going to be the first one without my MIL (she passed away in Jan.) and I feel like everyone is going to wander around unable to make conversation.

    2. Wait until Good Friday or that Saturday, then “We are under the weather and aren’t sure if it’s food poisoning or a stomach bug. Seems best that we sit out this year so we don’t share whatever this is.”

    3. Define “way too much drinking for family holidays” 😂 Isn’t that why you do at family holidays?

    4. I get this. I really love my in-laws, but not get togethers with the entire extended family. Those people are crazy lol. I go and try to be kind/and keep myself busy by helping out lol. I am not going to lie, now that we have small kids it has been a little more pleasant. Diaper changes/naps/kids that only sit down to eat for like 10 minutes allow for more chances to escape the room or leave early and not have to engage in long conversations.
