Another Clarisonic question! Looking for advice on whether a Clarisonic would be beneficial for me, and if so, which one? I am 47 years old. I have, if it matters, caucasian but mediterranean [i.e., tans easily, not fragile] skin, and do not now nor ever have had breakouts. I do have a bit of orange peel texture with largish pores on my cheeks near the nose, and my skin just seems a bit “bleh”. It’s not glowy, though that may be age/winter. Would the Clarisonic help? If so, do I need the full size one or would the travel size do fine since it’s just for my face, and if travel size, one speed or two? Any advice greatly appreciated….
TechAnon
Except for coloring, this describes me and my skin to a T (I’m caucasian with not fragile but burns easily skin.) Would love to see the answers you get.
What has been working for me is occasional microdermabrasian sessions. Unfortunately, I lost my good microderm technician and haven’t found another good one, so I don’t go as often as I used to. I’ve been thinking about the Clarisonic.
Those of you who have tried both Clarisonic and microderm: how do they compare?
Godzilla
I’m 20 years younger than you and my skin is similar to yours. It has never glowed except after facials. And using my Clarisonic. I don’t use it regularly enough to exclaim miracles but I use my Mia once a week (which is the travel size) and my face GLOWS. It looks like I wore special light-reflecting makeup when all I did was buzz my face with the Mia and slapped on my drugstore moisturizer on top. I think it could be worth it for you. Have never done microderm, so can’t comment on that.

Talbots is having a very good sale and shipping is free intil the New Years with the code DECFREE.
I was in Talbots store before XMas and fell in love with a jacket, but my size was not available in any local stores or online… but today it was available in a wide variety of sizes, and at a lower price. I have not ordered from Talbots before and have some misgivings having read Corporettes’ complaints about the customer service.
There are a few work dresses on sale, but most are only left in black. Saw some nice deals on shoes, too.

BEST Quote of the day:
(For reference, this was said by a Judge in open court to a local attorney. This attorney has developed a reputation for having questionable ethics and generally being kind of sketchy. The below statemetn was in response to a very bullsh*t argument he was attempting to make.)
“Credibility is like virginity. Once you lose it, there’s no getting it back.”
I was doubled-over laughing when I heard this (and the story behind it really makes it even funnier) and thought I had to share it with the Corporette community!
Always a NYer
This is great, and so true! And I love that it was said in open court, even better.

Oh how I love to see that kind of lawyer called out on it. Hooray for your judge!

I know its been discussed, but iPad2 covers/cases. I have the Apple screen protector (recommended). Its kind of a flip cover. But, the back is unprotected. Do I need an additional case? I like the DoDo cases, but that seems redundant with the cover I have. Can I use both simultaneously?
ADL
I use the Apple flip cover and recently purchased a keyboard which clips onto the back. But prior to that I just had the flip cover and it was fine, hanging out in my purse. My brother, SIL & mom have the a case from Targus that is an encaser (i.e. looks like a hard back book cover); you don’t/can’t use the Apple flip cover with that one.
JAC
Thanks. I guess I’ll just keep the flip cover I have and keep it in my purse.

I have a dodo case and totally love it. I throw myiPad in my bag now without a second thought. It seems to me that without both front and back protection, your ipad is vulnerable to any unequally applied force. I don’t know how much force it would take to break it, but i don’t want to find out. The wood frame is very sturdy but lightweight and fits very tightly. A plus is that it looks just like a Moleskin notebook and so is less conspicuous.

Can anyone comment on sizing at Reiss (in the US)? I love some of their sheath dresses that are on sale now, but don’t want to end up wasting a bunch of $ and effort sending stuff back. Any help is much appreciated! TIA!!
LawyrChk
They run about a size small on me compared with AT/Banana. I wear a 6 in Reiss and a 4 in AT.
SoHo
Thanks for your response! I’m probably a 4 in AT as well, so I decided to order the 6 and the 4, just in case, and hopefully one will work!

I hope people are still reading this thread during these slo-o-o-w days before the New Year! I have a question, especially for any Chicago readers, and hope you can give me some advice.
I’m going to Chicago for a conference in mid-January, and then possibly again for a few days in mid-February. Do I need a down puffer coat? Is this really the best option? What do you wear on your commute to work in Jan/Feb? I live in San Francisco and have a number of wool overcoats, which have been warm enough for trips to NYC in winter, but I know Chicago is a different type of cold.
I found a cute(ish) puffer on sale at Loehmann’s here for about $100, which seemed fair, since I will probably use it on two trips. I don’t know–just trying to get an idea if it’s really going to be any warmer than my wool coats layered up, or if I should save the money.
Thanks in advance!
darby
it can depend – i used to do a lot of winter biz trips to chicago (i also live in SF) & i got a puffer coat because i froze in my wool jackets. if you’re just in/out of hotels/offices, you can probably get away w/ some layers (but take a hat/gloves/scarf) but if you spend any time outside, you’ll probably want something warmer. i, too, hated buying a coat that i never need in SF.
PM
I am in Chicago. Though we are having a mild winter now, you can never go wrong assuming the weather will be brutal in January and February. That said, as long as you have a warm wool coat, I would advise you to skip the puffer and instead splurge on cabs. To bear the the cold, you need more than the down coat — you need warm boots and hair-mashing hats and gloves that turn your hands into flippers. Even if you had all that stuff, you don’t want to schlep in on the plane. Be sure to bring some sturdy shoes and a heavy cardigan you can layer under your coat.
Another Sarah
If you’re not used to the cold, get the puffer coat. People in Chicago wear the puffer coats from Oct-March, so you’re not going to look out of place. Once it gets cold enough people don’t care what they look like. My wool coats were never warm enough in Chicago – the wind goes right through them.
If you layer really well (as in you need long underwear) and take appropriate head/hand/face covering, then a wool coat may be ok. But otherwise, I would recommend the puffer coat.
TCFKAG
I’d say you couldn’t go wrong with a puffer coat but you’d probably be okay with layers underneath a wool coat. My experience is that you spend most time at a conference inside so I wouldn’t spend TOO much money on outerwear, unless you know you’ll be spending a lot of time outside for some reason.

How timely. I grew up in Chicago, now live in DC, and spend most Christmases back in Chicago with family. This year I decided I’d had enough of suffering in the cold there and bought a long down coat from Eddie Bauer (they had some fantastic sales at Thanksgiving, I think I paid $90). The coat is rated for 0 to 20 degrees – as PM said, the weather has been mild and it was probably in the 30s or 40s and I was NOT too warm. I’m really happy I had the coat. If you stay with your wool coats, check and see what percentage is wool. In my experience, only 100% wool coats are really warm. I have a J Crew Lady Day coat that is 94% wool, 6% nylon and has the Thinsulate vest and I was not warm enough in it last Christmas when it was probably in the 20s.
If you are not going to be outside much, you could probably make do with a wool coat, warm gloves, and warmer layers. I’d suggest ankle boots because then you can wear thicker socks.
Another thing that may or may not matter to you is that I find Chicago in the winter incredibly gloomy. It feels like dusk all day sometimes. It didn’t bug me growing up, but does now, I feel very lethargic and slightly depressed when I am there. But that could just be me.

Thank you to all who have recommended the Lands End Canvas Heritage Cardigan. My order arrived and the size medium fit perfectly (I am 5’8″, 34B and generally a 6- 8 on top but with broad shoulders and very long arms). Love the “dark chartreuse” color as well. And for $14 plus tax, the price really couldn’t be beat! They are back at $20 right now, but Lands End seems to be offering 20-30% off pretty regularly.

Virtuously cleaning out old files today. I am looking at a big stack of 2006 checking/savings account statements, dependent care receipts and medical/doctor visit receipts. Do I need to save them? I hold onto tax returns and major purchase receipts/investment account statements for longer but not sure about day to day stuff like these. Would love to shred it all. Any thoughts from the hive mind? TIA.

Keep tax records for 3 year from filing – that’s the SOL for the IRS auditing a tax return.

Except 6 years for any mistake that is “substantial”, which is why the 7-year rule is hanging around.

So enraged at the federal student loan people right now. I just checked my bank account to make sure I had enough to cover rent/credit card payments this month, etc, and discovered that the Department of Education withdrew $900+ this morning. The problem with that: (1) I didn’t owe anything until 1/28/12, and (2) even if I DID, then my monthly payment is $815. So where did they came up with $940?
Don’t even get me started on why they still have me on the Standard Repayment Plan instead of the ICR, even though I’ve sent them my tax papers THREE times.
Sorry for the Ellen-caps… I’m just a little angry at the moment. And the representative on the phone is absolutely no help.
conbrio
I’m sorry. That’s infuriating.

Can you call your bank and have them reverse the transfer? If Dept of Ed made an unauthorized withdrawal, the bank may be better equipped to go after them. Though YMMV depending on your bank.

I applied for IBR in AUGUST. still on the standard plan despite that they have all my information. It is “in processing.” I am going to write my congressman I think I really can’t think of what else to do. They are horrible, horrible people who don’t give a sh*t about the people that call.
J
I had trouble getting my student loans sorted out, and a staffer at my congressman’s office got it settled in less than 2 weeks. So yes, do call your congressman.
aw
Did you call or write? thanks
J
Called the local office. He had an education policy staffer who helped me out. This was in 2008 – direct loans has never had its sh!t together.

As someone who used to work in a congressional office, you’re going to have to write and sign a privacy release form before someone can help you. Usually the form can be found on the member’s website. Mail it to the local office. Further questions, call the local office – they handle these types of situations.
MeliaraofTlanth
Call their district office. At least for the office I worked for, all our casework was handled at the district office–DC office is policy stuff.

This sounds like a good idea, thank you!

I missed the thread the first time around because I was on vacation (yay for a boring day at work to catch up on Corporette!), but I just wanted to thank everyone who commented the other day about not feeling super excited happy wonderful about being pregnant. DH and I are 6 pills from not preventing, and I have a sense of impending doom. I’ve always wanted kids, but I’ve always wanted them “eventually.” All the family/career/age/lifestyle ducks are in a row, but I’m a long way from gleeful anticipation. Thank you for reassuring me that I’m normal.
Mamma Mia
I had the same feelings going up to stopping the pills (about a month and a half ago) and still sort of feel that way. I’ve taken 2 tests already (my darn period has still not come back!), and couldn’t decide at all whether I was happy or sad, relieved or disappointed when they were negative. (I asked hubby and he said the same.)
Change is hard!

fyi my cycle took a few months to come back when I went off the pill last winter and BOY OH BOY when it came back (while on business trip in Holland…) it was with a raging force I could hardly believe was okay til doing some research and calling the doctor. Will never forget that week. The next few after that were heavy but not as bad. Was pregnant 6 months later.
