These Franco Sarto booties look really comfortable and chic. With their little cutouts at the top, they also very much remind me of similar Rag & Bone and Alexander Wang styles. These are much more affordable, however — as low as $90 right now at Zappos, where they come in black leather, camel Sahara brahma hair, hickory satin nubuck leather, and iron satin nubuck leather. There are a few more options at Nordstrom, where they are all $129.95: iron leather, black textured leather, and textured pewter leather. These are getting very positive reviews on both sites so far. Help me shop? Last year there were a lot of recommendations for the Lands End Long Commuter Down Coat. But I was pregnant so I didn’t buy it, thinking I’d buy it this year . . . and they discontinued it (it’s still online, but only in limited sizes and colors).
Can you help me find something similar? I like that it was a down coat that wasn’t puffy, had a hood, looked to have some structure but no crazy pockets or fur, and the length was nice too.

Have, love, recommend here often. https://www.macys.com/shop/product/cole-haan-layered-down-puffer-coat?ID=2813247
And that price is crazy good.

Check out Eddie Bauer. I was in one of their outlet stores recently and they had a pretty good selection of coats. I’m petite and bought a down jacket with a hood that does not overwhelm me.
Equestrian Attorney
I also have an Eddie Bauer puffer jacket. It’s bit overwhelming for my 5’4 frame but really warm and I got a really good deal at an outlet.

I love Eddie Bauer. I have a pretty puffer jacket that is very light, so it is already to cold to wear it, but it does NOT make me look fat like my Canadian Goose Goose Down Jacket. I prefer to look svelte, which the Eddie Bauer jacket does for me. Also, men tend to look more at me when I do not show a bigger tuchus, which is what the Canadan Goose jacket does for me. FOOEY on that jacket, tho it is warm and I DO need to stay warm outside.
I want to wish the HIVE happy thanksgiving, as I will be going to LI tomorrow and may not get to post, except from Dad’s I-Mac! YAY!!!
Miss
I have a longer Eddie Bauer coat that I wear most of the winter and love. I got it at Costco for $40. It’s absolutely perfect. Zipped pockets, warm but not bulky, long enough to cover my rear, has a hood, elastic on the sleeves and hood keeps snow from getting in. I know this reply is super late, but I love my coat and the price is unbeatable.

The North Face has several good options. This for example, https://www.6pm.com/p/the-north-face-trevail-parka-ink-blue/product/8879988/color/121597.

I have last season’s (or maybe even the previous season’s) version of the Columbia Heavenly Long Hooded Jacket. The hood is great, it is quite warm, a good length on my 5’9″ frame and somewhat structured. Check their outlet too. I will post the link next.

i love these, but I still haven’t figured out how to wear booties. I am petite and usually wear ankle length pants or skinny jeans. I know that you’re supposed to keep a little separation between the pants and the booties, but I’m in DC and its pretty cold.
cat socks
I wear regular socks and have the top of my jeans stop at the top of the bootie – there is no separation when I’m standing. If I’m sitting, you can see a little bit of the socks. This requires me to fold the hem underneath on my jeans. I don’t like the cuffed look or having my pants scrunched up at the bottom. I could get my jeans hemmed for booties, but folding works for me now.
I like how Jean from Extra Petite styles her jeans and booties.

J Crew has 40% off full price now – does anyone know if they will have a bigger sale on Black Friday/Cyber Monday? Probably, right?

Thank you to everyone this morning for your thoughtful advice. I have definitely thought long and hard about biological kids or a family with my boyfriend and his kids. I read the Dear Sugar advice column about “The ghost ship that didn’t carry us” to help think through this decision, and I think recognizing that either choice leads to some loss gives me comfort in making the decision. I’ll definitely be talking with him about my feelings and thoughts.

Thinking good thoughts for you!

I’m attending a wedding in Tuscon the weekend before Christmas, attire is listed as “formal.” Anyone want to help with some vicarious shopping? I think what’s throwing me off is that the weather might be much warmer than I’m used to for December weather!

Help me out here. I’m getting a bit ahead of myself, but yesterday I applied for a job that seemed interesting. The job listing says “salary commensurate with experience” and I’m on the high side of experience for the job. Today I checked Glassdoor (stupid not to do it earlier, I know). If it’s accurate, the money is just too low for me to work it out. So it’s probably a no-go. But what do I do if they call me for an interview? Do I accept and worry about the money later, try to get a sense of the salary range, or just turn it down? Apparently it’s an intense interview process with a written test and an oral argument (also per Glassdoor).
Anon
I wouldn’t put too much weight on salary info from Glassdoor. It can be very misleading. Just continue with the application and interview process.
Anon
+1 the Glassdoor reviews for the company I work for sound like they’re for another company altogether, certainly nothing like my experience here. It’s almost like a competitor placed the reviews, which may actually be the case. Ignore Glassdoor.
Equestrian Attorney
Glassdoor is extremely inaccurate for my salary and position at my current company. Feel free to start a conversation about the range they were considering at the end of the first phone screen or interview, then decide whether to proceed.
What now?
I received a promotion – yay! – and will be starting my new role in a couple weeks. It will include some of my old responsibilities, but I will be working with new people. What should I be doing during this transition?

CDC just issued a romaine recall – am I way behind or has this been developing?
Senior Attorney
I remember a romaine recall some weeks (or months?) back but hadn’t seen it again until today. And I’m all “oops I served Caesar salad at a dinner party on Sunday!”
Anon
Just had a Caesar salad for lunch. Yay me!

I missed the Thanksgiving horror stories this morning. I thought I’d share mine.
My dad died after a long illness a few months before the holiday. My mom in her grief was in the midst of getting into a bad rebound situation with a seriously icky man she worked with, and she invited him and his grown children to thanksgiving.
My siblings and I were also there, and my younger sister had just started dating a trust fund baby, whom she was nervous about introducing to our lower middle class family, but she invited him to thanksgiving anyway because he would otherwise have been alone. She didn’t know my mom’s icky guy friend and his kids would be there.
Icky guy started immediately talking politics and then taking jabs at all the liberals and f*gs in San Francisco, where my sister, the trust fund baby, and I all lived. Icky guy’s son showed up late with a girlfriend he hadn’t mentioned, they were high AF, she was missing a front tooth (recent or not? We don’t know) and they kept leaving the meal to “have a smoke” (i.e. fix, methamphetamine), while icky guy’s adult daughter and mom of three little ones screamed constantly at her kids to shut the f up or she’d hit them.
My sister’s face, in front of her fancy date, is something I will never forget.
Because we like to make our mistakes permanently in my family, both my mom and my sister ended up marrying, then later divorcing, their dates for the dinner.

Help!
We want to plan last minute winter vacation – flying out of Sfo – family of 5 for about 4 nights in December after Christmas. Kids are 18, 16,14. No one can agree on what we want but they seem to want snow so considering Colorado (we have done Tahoe and Yosemite many times). But every where I look is sold out or super expensive.
I would prefer somewhere with some culture or good hiking and good food such as Mexico or Arizona but again everything is sold out or $1k per night.
Since we are big family of spend up to $500 per night for lodging but we need space for all of us.
Anon
I don’t know that last minute + not $$$ + Christmas week can all fit together into one trip. Maybe consider somewhere you can drive, to put your money into lodging and entertainment? I know my family looked at a trip to Costa Rica for that week earlier this year, and the cost was prohibitive for us.
