The one shoe I find myself wearing a ton of this season is my heeled oxford pumps — they work with tights, they work with trousers. I'm loving the look of these Cole Haan pumps — they have the “Air” cushioning, they have a platform, and they're part of the Maria Sharapova collection, all of which seem to bode really well for comfort. They're even on sale at Endless — the pinot noir (pictured) and black are both $170; the gray “Ironstone” is down to $114 (all originally $228). PSA: Endless has a TON of Cole Haan sandals for at or under $40!!! I just bought six pairs (with free returns, can’t go wrong!).
Lawgirl
Whatchu-talkin’-bout-Willis? LOL. I just did a search on Cole Haan and limited it to $50 and under and found nada. Can you send a link to a few? I’m a sale fiend.. ;-)
B
Hmmm, so I am not being allowed to paste links, but just sort by price: low > high and they should pop up!
K
I really want to get behind the oxford trend because they seem very practical but I just think they’re so ugly. This pair is the best I’ve seen.
AIMS
Agree that some can be quite dowdy, but I LOVE this pair! I think it’s the heel — takes away the frump factor that can be inherent when this style of shoe is paired with a chunky, shorter heel.
surrounded by lawyers
Let me begin by saying I am not at all offended by this comment!
I have suede oxfords with a low, thicker heel, which I wear with skinny pants in non-work situations. I was skeptical when I got them, and came very close to returning them, but now everywhere I go I get tons of compliments, many from strangers who have no reason to lie. So *perhaps* the look can be un-frumped.
Happy Feet
I don’t know what it is about “frump” but a woman who is otherwise perfectly polished, hip, edgy, etc. can absolutely rock one frumpy item like shoes, a boring cardi, or a grandma handbag and it will look deliberate, unique, and interesting.

“a woman who is otherwise perfectly polished, hip, edgy, etc.”
I would LOVE to believe that this describes me… ;)
houda
Absolutely!
Some people can pull off some clothing items perfectly. I don’t. But hoping that after spening so much time on this website, I will eventually reach that point where I can such trends and look good.
houda
Something is wrong with my keyboard today.. sorry
*spending* and *can wear such a trend*
Anon
I have these shoes and love them. They are very high, so if you aren’t used to heels, these aren’t for you. But they are lovely. And the wine is so practical (I pack them when I will be wearing black, grey and brown and it goes with all)
Jen L
I wish I had a job and could justify buying these. I love them in the wine color and you just made them seem so much more practical!
Anon
hah. perhaps practical isn’t the best word :) — they are really high and I routinely wear high heels. But they do go with quite a lot — both skirts and trousers in all colors. And I think the are just a gorgeous shoe.
jcb
I love them so much. Just got a different Cole Haan pair in the mail (used the 40% off one item black Friday sale coupon) and absolutely love them. I love the mens-wear twist. And, even with a 3.5 inch heel, they are far more comfortable than I had anticipated (the Air Violets, not the featured ones).
Anon
Agree. I just cannot do this, and I think they’re really unflattering when I see them on others. For the trend, these look about as good as it gets, but I’m still staying far away.
houda
I agree, I think they are too matronly/masculine for me to pull off. But Kat’s pair is definitely different (in a positive way)
JAS
What’s interesting is that a) I agree that they are kind of frumpy/matronly, (b) but if you are “otherwise polished…”, etc, they look great and (c ) I have some and a MAN, without being prompted, told me that they were super hot and “definitely f***- me shoes.” I was so surprised! I asked my male roommate to confirm and he said he would n’t go quite that far but they reminded him of burlesque photos done by Marlene Dietrich (sp?).
Bonnie
I have a pair similar to these and I love to wear them with a feminine pinstripe skirt suit.
L from Oz
I like these, although I’m slightly averse to buying something connected to Maria Sharapova!
However, the heels would be suicidal in the current weather we’re having. Today we had, in no particular order, two short snowstorms, rain, light snow, heavy snow, and two bouts of hail. Every single woman in the office was wearing boots – and I’d say 90% of us (including someone very senior) were wearing skinny trousers tucked into boots or boots with a skirt and woolly tights. Frankly, if I saw someone wearing heels outdoor I’d think they were slightly batty – it’s more like skating than walking right now.
govvie girl
Why…what’s up with her? I don’t know anything other than the fact that she plays tennis, is in lots of ads and is the subject of widespread male affection.

Threadjack:
I’ve used Bare Escentuals (loose powder foundation+mineral veil) for the last 4 years and am thinking of whether to re-buy or switch to something else. I just had a product demo of Jane Iredale in a store and was favorably impressed. The beautician put on the Absence Oil Control primer (a whitish powder) followed by Purepressed Pressed Powder foundation. It seemed to reduce the appearance of my pores and give a smoother finish to my skin. Also, which is important to me, both these products seem to be ranked highly for cosmetics safety. I want to avoid the usual culprits like phthalates, parabens, etc. – I checked the EWG cosmetics database.
Any comments on Jane Iredale products – pros or cons?
Also, any other suggestions for powder or mineral based (natural) products I should consider switching to?
Thanks!
surrounded by lawyers
I swear by my Aveda tinter moisturizer (I don’t do powder though). It’s natural, has SPF 15 and actually stays on from ~7 am when I put it on, to 11:30 or so when I wash it off. It also seems to absorb, very well, anything else I may put on top of it, e.g. blush, shimmer or concealer.
Ru
PSA: Bare Escentuals just called me to let me know that they’re having their Friends and Family sale – 20% off everything.
HS
I love Jane Iredale products because they make you look flawless, are safe/natural, and don’t irritate my super sensitive skin. Their Dream Tint tinted moisturizer is amazing for when my skin is too dry and flaky to use powders. My mother swears by their Liquid Minerals foundation to even out her sunspots.
However, using all JI products would kill my budget! I switched to Everyday Minerals for powder foundation, blush, and eyeshadow and still use JI Active Light undereye concealer, JI lipsticks, and JI eye/lip pencils. EDM’s loose powder products work nicely and they have a wider range of shades and textures than JI. I haven’t had good luck with EDM’s pressed powder products or their lipsticks.
It’s cheap to experiment with Everyday Minerals. They offer $5 foundation sample kits to help you find your right shade and formulation, and 99% of their products have a sample size available for $2.50.
Good luck!
lulu
JI is expensive but the quality of the powder foundation is much better than BE, which looks flakey/cakey on me; so even if you can’t afford to completely switch, I would seriously consider that move. (I’ve always wanted to try Liquid Minerals, but haven’t gotten around to it. They are not easy products to find!)
Samantha
Thanks all for the very helpful suggestions! Ru, I did go to Bare Escentuals yesterday with a friend who bought the kit at 20% discount and was very happy about it – thanks for your suggestion!
Chicago K
I love JI products and have used them for the past 5 years. The pressed powder is on of the only brands that comes in a light shade to match my very fair skin. I love the liquid minerals as my skin can be dry and looks better using this with a touch up of powder over it. I use a sunscreen under the liquid minerals to get it to apply flawlessly.
I also use JI shadows. I think they are the best, they go on so smoothly (I do use a primer from MAC).
They are expensive, but they last a pretty long time and you don’t use much. Also, some spas have sales on the products periodically.
Lena
I picked up a pair of the Air Violet’s at the beginning of September and am loving them…wasn’t thrilled about paying full price, but I think the extra 2-3 months of wear might have been worth it.
Lawgirl
Heart these. <3 Have several 3.5" lace-up oxfords, including these from Talbots that are insanely well made and comfortable. SWOOON. http://www.talbots.com/online/browse/product_details.jsp?id=prdi25162&rootCategory=cat70018&catId=cat440039&sortKey=Default§ion=Sale&conceptIdUnderSale=cat440039

I love those Talbots ones. They sold out so quickly – I’ve been stalking my size online.
Bridget
I finally took the plunge on a pair of oxford pumps someone posted here a month back or so, the Jones New York ones from DSW.
http://www.dsw.com/shoe/jones+new+york+bing+oxford+pump?prodId=198087
I have to say, I love wearing them. They are not the MOST comfortable things ever, but I didn’t want to spend too much on something that I might tire of after a season. So these definitely fit the bill. And they were actually my favorite of the many styles I looked at over weeks of searching.
When I wear them with tights and a skirt (as opposed to trousers), I notice a lot of people notice them. I have been assuming it’s because they’re all very jealous. I guess may be some people hate them, though. Haha. Oh, well. I really feel so cute and fashionable when I wear them.
MM
I have these, too. Love them. They’re on the high end of what I can do heel-wise, but my job is low-activity so that’s okay. Also appreciated that they come in Wide sizes as well.
b23
Yup, I bought these after someone posted them as well. They were the best I had seen so far, but now I actually like the featured Cole Haan ones better. I’m glad I already bought the (much cheaper) Jones New York ones so I’m not tempted by these!
JB
I was the one that posted them, and I’m wearing them right now. I ordered them in a wide, and I find them quite comfortable. I think that they look adorable with a skirt and tights and with trousers.
Dallas lawyer
Kat,
I just want to say I love your blog. All other blogs give lousy advice. Your advise is spot on. I usually just read from my rss feed, but I had to come over here and tell you how much this blog rocks. I’ve been reading for about a year now and between this site and sample sales, I don’t think I’ll ever have to set foot inside a store again (which is how I like it…my life is busy).
Louise
Dallas, if you’ve only been reading through RSS, then you are probably missing all the great comments on this site. Kat rocks, but the comments contain so much good stuff that you should really delve into them!
houda
Yes I second this. The comments are so helpful and the weekend open thread is amazing – also the threadjacks :)
Midori
I wore a very similar-looking pair of shoes to court in Chicago just this afternoon. LOVE! Perfect for hiding a pair of nice, thick socks under a pantsuit.
Ru
These shoes are GORGEOUS.
L
I have these in black and love them. Another thing that makes them a little less dowdy than some other pairs is that the laces are a velvet ribbon-y thing, not the thin menswear-esque laces. The lace-up oxford thing is not for everyone but I like the trend and thought these were the cutest interpretation by far. I will say that, despite all the awesome Nike Air cushioning, etc., after a number of hours of mostly standing (I wore them to a cocktail party the other night), my feet were still killing me. But I think less so than any other pair of shoes that high would. Otherwise I love the (very high) height of the heel and I find these much steadier to walk in with such a high heel than a pump with a similar heel.
Elle 2
Dear Santa,
I want a pair of beautiful pumps in this pinot noir color.
Louise
Dear Santa,
After you deliver Elle’s pumps, can you please bring me some pinot noir boots? Oh, and some actual pinot noir wine, too.
Santa
Dear Louise,
I’ll make you a deal. I’ll provide the boots, you provide the pinot noir.
2L NYC
This comment is amazing. Have fun with Santa, Louise!
Louise
Santa! Are you flirting with me? :-)
Carrie
I heart. I think these look great with pants.
Ellen
Sorry, but I do NOT like pumps like this. I prefer stylish pumps and these look like what peeple work in junior high school, less 2 inches of heel.
I am only 30 years old, and this makes me look like a little old lady, and I want to wait 40 years before having that look.
Besides, my legs are not to thin, so these make them even MORE stocky.
And their to expensive. Fooey on these shoes. Fooey!
CBC
Love these shoes. Unfortunately I’m now seriously tempted to spend the money I had set aside to buy new running shoes on these instead!
houda
I do not mean to be nosy but maybe the running shoes are better.
It is up to you but if I were you I would love to get myself something good for my health and then fashion comes next.
Sorry if that is too intrusive, just wanted to pitch in
CBC
Lol. Not intrusive at all, houda. I know what I SHOULD spend the money on, these boots are just seriously tempting!
JM
Or…spend the money on the running shoes, and when you hit a goal (personal best or otherwise), buy the boots as a gift to yourself! Best of both worlds :)
Lady T
Just when I decided the only shoes I’d buy for the remainder of the year were boots. Must find a way to shift items in my budget!
SiouxsieLaw
I love these. Bring on the sexy librarian witch!!! Might have to order a pair now.
RR
Love these, but alas the heel is higher than I can handle.
jcb
I thought the same about the Air Violets until I tried them on – the cushioned sole makes them much more doable than you’d expect!
Anon
I have these shoes (I’m the one from above). I regularly wear 3-4 inch heels and these feel higher than most of my 3-4 inch heels. If you aren’t tottally comfortable with heels, these will feel too high.
Texas Lawyerette
Can anyone recommend a good leather cleaner?
Texas Lawyerette
I should have added that I need it for boots :)
Eponine
I really like the leather cleaner/conditioner by Cole Haan. It only costs $4.50. They also have a leather protector spray, also for $4.50, but for boots and such I usually use Kiwi waterproofing spray instead. Coach also makes a leather cleaner and conditioner (2 separate products; the Cole Haan one is one product), but it contains silicone and I find it leaves a slight film on my leather items, whereas the Cole Haan one doesn’t.
rg
FWIW, the Ferragamo shop person also recommended Cole Haan products to me as the best leather care products anyone makes. I view that as a pretty strong endorsement. I haven’t made it over to get them yet, but it’s definitely something I plan to do.
chix pix
I dislike everything about these shoes. The combination of a very high heel and an oxford toe looks like a joke to me. I could see wearing them one time to perk up a dark pantsuit – but I would hate to have this become my personal trademark.
lasviegas
They are also available at 6pm.com for $114! Just bought them, absolutely adorable!
