A lot has been said about this “repairing essence” and “hydrating serum” from CosRX — I grabbed it during one of the sale days last year and have to say I've been pleasantly surprised.
I suppose I'm into hydrating serums — I've used squalane oil in the past, and got a hydrating serum at Trader Joe's. Compared to those two things, I still think this one is better. It feels like moisturizing is locked in, and I actually like the way the product is a bit sticky/stringy if you rub it between your hands, I feel like that's when you know it's working!
You are supposed to be using this with wet skin, which was a bit problematic with the other layers of my morning routine. I wound up (perhaps incorrectly? I'm open to advice here!) doing my BHA first, then Vitamin C, then peptide spray if I was doing one, then this snail essence, then my moisturizer, then sunscreen. I'd just splash a few drops on my face before using this one to ensure that my skin was really wet.
Readers, what are your thoughts? (And: how many layers do you have to your skincare routine?)
The COSRX essence is under $20, at Amazon.
Don't forget sun protection (especially face, hands, and chest)! Sunscreens readers have loved over the years are pictured above: Elta MD, Supergoop!, and this $17 sunscreen (Kat's favorite). Sephora's 2024 Sun Safety Kit is also out and a huge hit with readers. If you're hunting for cute rash guards, check out J.Crew, Boden, Coolibar, and Athleta.

I’m looking for a comfortable slip-on sneaker. Looking at this one from Dr. Scholl’s, but interested in hearing other recs.

I have a pair from Keds that’s pretty comfortable. Ecco is also good, but a little more pricey.
Anon
I wore slip-on Keds everywhere last summer and ended up with plantar fasciitis. Not enough support I guess. Sample of one, but my podiatrist told me to throw them in the trash.

Consider Kizik

+1! Surprisingly comfortable and they have a lot of cute styles now.

This! I just got the Vegas style and really like them.

I loved these (and they could take orthotics). My only issue was that they are very flat so were not good ‘all day’ shoes for me.

I’ve been happy with my Allbirds.

Honestly, I’ve bought the last two pairs of shoes in that style from Old Navy. They’ve been super comfortable and have lasted a long time.

I have these shoes in both Rose Gold and Brown Bomber colors — they go with everything and are pretty comfortable for walking around. Pus they seem to be on sale right now!

Does anyone have a good “no makeup eyeshadow”? How did you decide you needed one (vs just going bare or with a pale pink or beige)?
Cat
Bobbi Brown shadow sticks – easy, blendable, stay on all day. Taupe is the perfect “my lids but better” for me but YMMV.
As far as needing one – noticing that I look more polished and awake with color than without.
anon
I like Wet ‘n’ Wild Nutty Brulee and Nutty single eye shadows.

The Naked basic palette from UD has a couple of “my lids but better” for me. The effect is just covering thin veins and brightening a little.
Anon
I have very purpley eyelids from thin, pale skin. Like you can see my veins. I use concealer on my eyelids, set with translucent powder, and then go in with a neutral shade on my creases to add a little depth and color.
Anon
Have a concealer technique that is in mod for some reason. Check back.
Anon
This is very specific but I bought a stick from Ogee. It was meant to be contour, but I realized that I was never going to be that person. So now I use it to swipe my eyelids for a no makeup look. It’s broad, so I can get coverage easily. Its sheer and very hydrating. I swipe a highlighter across the brow bone and call it a day

I like Clinique “Everywhere Neutrals” + Tom Ford shades–most of them are very soft and creamy velvety powders that go on light and feel like “my lids but better”.

I like the crayons from NYX

If you have a bronzer you like, it can look nice as a wash from lid to crease. I do this when I travel and just bring a min bronzer/blush sample with me.

Good 2024 recommendations for a substantial black sweater or jacket that isn’t a suiting-material jacket? Lined is OK. Pockets are ideal. Needs to hit at a high hip (slightly cropped but not overly cropped or long). Sort of like an older school Chanel or St John jacket (not the MMLF jardigan or similar — I have skinny arms and layering with anything with sleeves looked bunch and the material isn’t warm enough for the spring A/C).
Anonymous
How fancy does it need to be? In terms of warmth, but not super fancy, the Dudley Stephens fleece pieces I have are super warm and coz and perfect for this frost in the morning, 60 in the afternoon spring we’re having currently.
Anon
OP — much more formal than fleece. This would be for work. I’ve got the casual stuff covered.

This is from a while ago, but I have some knit blazers from Macy’s – the Alfani brand. I actually find their online selection good.

I just picked one up at JCrew Factory – the cotton lady jacket cardigan sweater (I chuckled at the last three words in a row). The material is substantial and with metal buttons, it looks dressier than a regular cardigan.

Saint & Sofia has a few I’ve been eyeing. Have not bought.

Saint James had a really nice one in the Fall/Winter collection. I think you might be hamstrung by the season here since you are shopping in the off season for black sweaters.

I’d suggest vitamin C right after washing, before everything else. BHA and Vit C same day might be a bit much for your skin, watch for any redness or irritation – you might want to rotate.
Anon
I second this, skin cycling is so good

I’d suggest vitamin C then snail mucin right after washing, before everything else. BHA and Vit C same day might be a bit much for your skin, watch for any redness or irritation – you might want to rotate.
Anon
If snail mucin works best on wet skin, I’d do it first, wait a minute, then do other serums.
I am a big fan of thin layers of hydration, the Asian skincare concept. My skin is so much better since I started doing it.
Anon
I would just like to come here to say, I am 45, with combination skin, but history of acne.
This snail mucin definitely broke me out. It says it’s non-com, but….I tried three different “tests” and it definitely did. Sad!!!
Anon
Always a good idea to test patch anything new!
Anon
Same here! And I’m not acne prone.
Anon
Third. this broke me out too.
Anon
Try the moisturizer version I found it was a lot thinner than the essence and my skin was happier with the moisturizer than the essence.
No Face
I use a simple cleanser, this snail mucin, and a simple moisturizer. I do a peel from the Ordinary once a week.

Does anyone have a great drip irrigation system they like? I’ve found options from $30-$300 and I can’t tell what I want. I’m looking to water two 4×8 raised beds, with thoughts of maybe extending to the edges of a 13×20″ bed. (And several large container/planters? Maybe?)
Anon
Drip tape worked great last time I worked on an actual farm growing produce and flowers for selling at the farmer’s market. I wouldn’t go with anything more expensive for home use in the beds.
For containers/planters, I’d be curious about some kind of plant straw.
Anon
Do you want to water the entire planter or just specific plants?
If the entire garden drip tape might work, or you can get little emitters with spray heads. They’re not like sprinklers, it’s a pretty small and weak spray, but it works if you let it go for the right amount of time. That’s what I use in my raised planter. You can put one quarter circle sprayer in each corner pointed toward the middle.
For my regular garden, I use individual drippers.
I currently have 3/4” lines laid from my main water source and run the little 1/4” flexible tubing from that as needed for the sprinklers and drippers. But you can also just buy a kit that can attach to your spigot or garden hose. That’s how I got started, and now I would say I’m pretty comfortable with all DIY, buying what I need ala carte.
Rain Bird is a main brand for this, and they sometimes sell stuff as Rain Drip. You’ll be running to the hardware store for additional bits and pieces most likely, but a kit will get you started. I see the Rain Bird site has a kit that looks pretty good for $64.99.

Long comment in jail, please come back!
Here’s a kit I mentioned in my comment .

Hey everyone, if anyone has a few minutes to spare today, I could really use some shopping advice. I’m on the hunt for a super cozy wrap that can fold up really small. I want to be able to throw it in my carry-on for those chilly plane rides, and then use it as a blanket or wrap when I get to my destination (especially in those over-air-conditioned offices). I’m thinking about splurging on cashmere, but I’m open to more affordable options too. My current wrap is just too bulky, and I’m starting to feel like I’m bringing a security blanket to meetings…

It’s now our of season, but when the fall season begins again (in the summer), you might like to check out J. Jill — I have a cozy cashmere-like (but synthetic and very washable) scarf-shawl in a camel/tan color and off-white/cream.

I know we have this convo twice a week, but what are the favorite drugstore daily face sunscreens again? Neutrogena is making me break out.
Anon
None of the above. US sunscreens suck.
I order this
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C7GH1TDY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It’s the asian version. It takes a little longer than regular Amazon but it is such an amazing sunscreen. It it NOT the same as the Biore made-for-USA version.
Anon
Oh, I just ordered it again after I made the “takes a little longer” comment, but this one looks like it’s going to come on a regular Amazon time frame! I guess we’ll see.
Anon
Not drugstore but I really enjoy using an Australian sunblock Mecca To Save Face which is SPF50 and doubles as a primer for me. Otherwise I’ve enjoyed the Ultraviolette SPF50 ones. Australian sun blocks are strictly regulated so I feel a lot better using their ones over others!
Anonymous
Highly recommend Ultra violette from Australia but also Shiseido sunscreens ( Japanese) are good.

I’ve been using Sun Bum glow… I like it so far (I think it’s a supergoop knockoff)
