Wow — I am always humbled and amazed when I realized how far this blog has come from the early days, when I would get up at 5 AM in the morning to write posts, and it would take me hours to figure out how to add pictures to them. Happy birthday, Corporette!
One of the most important things to me is to make sure that I'm addressing the needs of my audience, so I hope you guys will indulge me and take a little survey (it's super short, I promise). To sweeten the pot a bit, I'd like to offer survey-takers* a chance to win a grab-bag including products from brands such as Laura Mercier, Ann Taylor, Motorola, Parker Pens, Anastasia, Camille Beckman, Silver Linings, and more. (Lousy picture at right.)
The last time we took the survey (in August 2011), this was the makeup of the blog readers:
- 74% were between 23 and 36 years old
- 32% had salaries higher than $100K, and 7% have salaries higher than $200K (go ladies!)
- 47% were married, and 77% had no children
- 53% had a law degree, or were in the midst of obtaining one
- 33% of our readers had “just started” their careers, while 31% had been “at it for 3-8 years”
Some more fun statistics for you: last month we had over 180,000 unique visitors, and over 800,000 page views — that's more than double what we had in August 2011!
* While I'd like to hear from ALL readers, please note that the giveaway is only open to U.S. readers, age 18 or older. There will only be one winner; she or he will be randomly selected by Kat and notified by email (email required to enter the giveaway; please note that we will only contact you if you win the giveaway). If the first winner does not respond within one week, a new winner will be selected.
Ladies, please click here to take the survey!

5 years! This made me shed a little tear of personal reflection. I started reading as a recent college grad and paralegal, and now I’m a lawyer. Thanks for helping me get through law school!
SFBayA
I started reading a few months after starting my first year as an associate. How time flies. I even purchased my first TPS item this month – the Tory Burch Walsh dress (it is fab.u.lous. and I’ve asked TCKFAG to find me a belt for it).
Thank you Kat for creating this community. I’ve met some really great women here both virtually and in real life and read many pieces of thoughtful advice. Some of the things I value most are our discussions on very hot-button political or “mommy wars” issues have for the most part remained respectful, considerate, and honest, which is truly an incredible feat on the internet.

Ah yes – my dress enabler :) Mine arrived today, but it may end up a return. I’ll have to try it on to be sure, but it looks to be too short for me :(
SFBayA
Can you let out the hem?
Anon
I checked and it doesn’t seem like there is much hem (maybe 2 inches) – it may be enough, but maybe not. I’ll know when I get home :)
What are you going to wear it with? I need to wear a blazer/cardigan, and I’m trying to think of combos.
SFBayA
You could let out the hem all the way and have them sew a strip of navy fabric along the bottom, which then becomes the interior of the hem with just a smidgen of dress fabric folded under the hemline, thus maximizing the length you can get out of it.
A cropped cardi. I don’t do blazers and I don’t have to wear them in my office anyway. With the navy dress, I’m thinking gray, lavender, eggplant, teal, jade, yellow, marine blue, oxblood, mustard, or camel, possibly with contrasting belt color belted over the dress. I’m not keen on the belt it came with. I don’t own most of those colors, but we’ll see what TCFKAG thinks.

Ditto, I found corporette in 2008 when I was in law school contemplating all the potential pitfalls and mistakes that I might make in my internships and beyond… Kat hasn’t steered me wrong :)

Happy 5th Corporette! Thanks Kat for building such a wonderful community :-)

I’m assuming the US only-ness of the giveaway is to do with postage costs? I hope so – I’ve put my email address in case I won and if I did I’d sort out an American go-between to post it on. Is that okay?
Kat G
Actually it’s because each country has different rules for giveaways in their country (as far as I understand it)…
marketingchic
Speaking as someone who runs a lot of online giveaways – I always make them US only because other country’s laws – even Canada – are a logistical nightmare.
Nonny
This makes the Canadians very sad. :-(
Equity's Darling
We never get invited for giveaways from websites…which I find weird, because giveaways always seem pretty straight-forward for within Canada, they always just add in a skill-testing question. C’est la vie I suppose.
Blonde Lawyer
The lawyer in me has always been so curious about this kind of thing. For example, Tom’s shoes was doing a contest for a volunteer trip to another country to hand out shoes. It excluded Rhode Island residents. I really wanted to email them and find out what about Rhode Island law prohibited it, even though I don’t even live in RI. I also never really understood why giveaways had to be regulated in the first place. What harm is there where someone is getting something for free. You always here “no purchase necessary” as a disclaimer because apparently giveaways have to be “no purchase necessary” – but why? What is the harm in a company only offering a giveaway to its customers. I just don’t get it and it is an area of law that has always intrigued me that I have never taken the time to research.
Blonde Lawyer
I googled that for myself.

Merabella
There are rules for sending out gifts for lady garden parties to certain states – because they don’t allow delivery of those items in the state (like Utah, and somewhere else I can’t remember). So specific state laws can come into play because of the item or the type of giveaway.
Lily-Student
OH, okay! I suppose since I do giveaways on my blog I ought to know these things… *shifty eyes* You can discount me if I win then :p

A big thanks to Kat for creating an amazing community. An issue came up recently that I wouldn’t have been comfortable talking to friends about. Someone had gotten some great advice on a similar issue a few months back and I remembered it and was able to employ it.

Kat, thanks for all of your hard work on this blog. Some of my stickiest questions have been answered with grace and compassion in the comments.. How interesting (and awesome) that a blog about fashion is the meeting place for a community of professional women who act as each others’ sounding boards, confidants, and cheerleaders. None of this would be without you!
ANP
Kat, you (and this website) are awesome. I freaking love this community. HBD!

Kat- Congratulations on 5 years and thanks for creating this great blog and community! Been reading for 2 years now, and my last paper of law school I wrote about this blog! I think it’s an incredible use of this medium and really has found such a unique niche for professional women.
Here’s to continuing to watch this blog grow with my new career in BigLaw!

Happy Birthday! I really like this blog and I appreciate all the work you do. I love the chats with smart, insightful women, and I love the fashion advice too. There are too many fashion blogs that are all OMG TrEEEENNNDDDZZZZZZ and end up looking ridiculous. I have a practical life and need practical inspiration. So yay! Thanks!
