Suit of the Week: Gabriela Hearst

For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional. Also: we just updated our big roundup for the best women’s suits of 2026!
I just noticed this blazer with an interesting chain detail… and of course, it’s one of Gabriela Hearst’s signature looks.
I love the attention paid to the chain detail — it’s exposed at the waist, partially covered in leather, and knotted internally to finish the design. I’d want a cleaner line than the model has, but that’s what tailors are for.
For those of you who’ve been hunting for wool suiting, you’re in luck – this one is 100% virgin wool. (The lining is viscose, though.)
While it’s mostly sold out at NET-A-PORTER, you can get the blazer in lots of other colors and materials at GabrielaHearst.com.
(Also: I don’t care how much you pay, it’s really really hard to make a slim-fitting satin suit look like it cost more than $100.) (Also: hooo that’s a low waistline…)

Ugh. Our accountant sadly passed away last year and we had to find a new firm. They set up a Zoom meeting with us today and managed to misspell both of our last names in the email. Not very confidence-inspiring. If you’re misspelling the clients’ names, what else are you screwing up?
And you kids? Get off my lawn!
Drop them and find someone who will do a better job!
That would be a huge red flag to me too. Depending on how the meeting goes, I would just find someone new
Speaking as someone whose husband is an accountant and facing the tax deadline, October 14 is the lawyer equivalent of being in your third week of trial and presenting a difficult expert witness. I’d give them grace today.
I have a coworker who misspells my name every. single. time. she contacts me and it drives me absolutely crazy.
My immediate coworker misspelled my very common, easy to spell and pronounce name every single time until she retired. Think Laci v Lacie except far more common. I decided not to care.
the footage after the UChicago party is insane. love how they thought they had a claim against her for assault.
?
i saw it on FB but can’t find it now. the victim’s friend follows the attacker and when he says “she wanted it” she starts hitting and chasing him and the frat bro filming goes “physical assault, nice.”
re this:

From Chapel Hill (older vintage but currently in the news):
— female student r*ped and murdered in off-campus apartment by a stranger so disconnected that a DNA dragnet failed to uncover him to the point of being on a Dateline episide
— female student body president kidnapped by non-school criminals, forced to go to ATMs, and shot in a field because she saw their faces
From what I see here, is this another assault by a stranger.
I wonder how robustly all of this is reflected in each school’s Clery Act reporting. And TBH my daughters’ high school is not an assault-free zone and the perpetrators are often minors, so you don’t know what you don’t know re safety for women on campus or among their classmates (never mind the non-affiliated really bad people they encounter).
Why are you bringing this up?
I wouldn’t be surprised if the anemic amount of comments later is partially due to the increase in super gory, upsetting, and triggering posts.
+1
I was at UNC when Eve Carson was m*rdered. Anon isn’t even correct on all the details what happened but wow, really just did not need to remember that in vivid detail, randomly in the middle of the afternoon.
I thought this one was pretty easy to unexpand; the OP was vague.
It’s a really weird time for women in USA right now.
I wasn’t aware of the case before this but found it upsetting and unnecessary to read as well. I didn’t know I needed to collapse it until it was too late.
This is the metro section of my city’s paper any given week, for decades. So many really sad things happening on a wrong time, wrong place basis.
OP at 2:37 was vague posting, but 3:24 felt both graphic and totally unclear.
3:24, have a heart and just say what you’re saying. If you’re just saying “cases like this often turn out to involve off campus strangers,” you don’t need to go into all those true crime details to express your opinion.
The way you’re talking about actual assaults of minors taking place at your daughter’s high school feels callous and that may not be unrelated.
I’m tired of the focus on Cornell. Other bad things deserve attention.
Sounds like we need to pay a lot more attention to Cornell if there are people who think we should allow other bad things to distract us from the behavior of privileged college men.
Is anyone following Julia Berolzheimer’s interior design on her new house? Thoughts? I find it surprising.
i looked her up but could only find brocade/fashion. what’s her deal again? married well?
She married into significant family wealth and had a gorgeous house in Mt. Pleasant in Charleston, but recently moved to South of Broad and hired a different interior designer who is normally popular/respected but is apparently getting panned. Not sure why since this would be essentially a no-budget redesign.
She married into massive wealth which helped in building her brand, but I’m sure she now brings in high 7 or 8 figures annually from her business.
Her obsession with thinness, overconsumption and general tacky taste has completely turned me off from her. I wish this influencer culture would go away.
lol yes let’s go back to the era when you had to be a countess or princess to a trendsetter
sorry you don’t have enough followers on instagram! maybe if you video every part of your everyday life and link to more brands and encourage ridiculous spending, then you too can be a trendsetter like your beloved Julia.
i was 4:21 – i honestly don’t follow her. i’m just saying it’s disingenuous to pretend that influencer culture is new or an outlier. we’ve always been “told” trends.
On the one hand, I agree – looking to well known figures for inspiration is nothing new, and a ton of fashions/trends decades and even centuries ago can be directly traced to prominent individuals like royalty (the Alexandra limp comes to mind). And they still are huge trendsetters – I always think of the bridal fashion industry changing essentially overnight from strapless satin ballgowns to lace with sleeves in April 2011.
On the other hand, I think people are very wary of being constantly sold to, and social media influencers are a huge part of that. Even when not labeled as such, when everything feels like an ad its hard to know what is a quality purchase. Which leads us back to countesses and royalty – I know I am much more likely to look up a brand Princess Kate is wearing knowing that she doesn’t accept clothing for free. Whereas I’m sure Julia B’s interior designer is providing her work in some part for the social media exposure, and probably getting kickbacks from the companies she’s using. It’s advertising all the way down, and there’s a definite and understandable backlash to that.
Eh. It’s not the exclusivity/lack thereof that bothers me, it’s that it’s become such a business. I’m all for less gate keeping but Jackie O wasn’t selling me sunglasses or Jack Rogers slides all day long.
And I get that people have always gotten freebies for the attention but it’s all so boring now. It’s jumped the shark. The really stylish people don’t constantly buy new stuff – they wear lots of old and some new things in interesting ways, but that’s not as profitable so we get what we get. It just feels like everything has been optimized to death, influencer culture included. It’s soulless.
Huh, I’m not a fan of here but I very much enjoy content from influencers.
She has a substack with her husband, right? Just checked it a couple of times. They seemed to be this kind of people who is too pleased to know themselves. And a weird thing about pushing frivolous AI use. No idea about her home decor, though.
Their AI use is really egregious even for influencers
It seems risky to me for influencers to over-rely on AI. Doesn’t it make them SO replaceable if they lose any vestige of originality and authenticity?
I’m struggling with the unpredictable, feast or famine nature of my private practice. I know I’m not alone, and yet, I don’t handle the busy times well. How do you all cope with/transition to and from being so busy all you do is work and sleep to wondering if a client will call you ever again? I have fifteen years of my own data and other than December, I don’t see any noticable pattern or cycle like “March is always crazy” or “every 5 years everyone wants X.”
I’m going through a busy time, and one thing that really moves the needle is delegating. I’m in a firm, so I have attorneys I can call on for help, and I make use of that, even if I don’t ultimately make as much money. if you’re a solo, consider a contract attorney or paralegal who can help you when you’re busy. What area of practice are you in?
Another thing I’d look at is how do you develop your pipeline? An ideal pipeline is a steady stream and yours sounds like it’s not hitting that goal. Counter intuitive right now, but can you increase your business development to put yourself in a position of being able to hire someone full time to help? You’d make more money. If you didn’t want to hire someone, this sounds counter intuitive, but if you increase business development efforts such that your pipeline is steadier, you will probably feel more comfortable turning work down when you’re at capacity because you won’t be worried about the “famine” times.
best spotify playlist to focus? i don’t want to feel like i’m in a spa, a techno club, or a piano concert (of the three techno club is probably the closest)
Mellow Beats has been one of my favorites, it’s like instrumental hip hop/lo fi
