We seem to be making the shift towards warmer weather (finally!) so I'm hunting for a bright, happy raincoat to add to my collection — and Lands' End seems to have a ton that are marked down today. I always prefer unbelted styles to belted ones (hence this pick, which also comes in a royal purple, khaki, navy, and a “sandy pink floral“), but I also like this more traditional belted trench in malachite and a light blue. Everything is available in regular, petite, tall, and plus sizes, and all of the coats are down to around $75 today. Lands' End Coastal Rain Coat (L-all)Sales of note for 9.10.24

Oscar Pistorius, intentional murder of Reeva, or accidental?
I was firmly on the side of intentional, but now I don’t know. I feel so bad for Reeva’s family, even if it was an accident, he is just making it all about himself, when it should be about her.
Ellen
I would NOT trust a guy named Pisstorius. FOOEY!
tesyaa
He’s a famous person, and famous people are often narcissistic – I’m not surprised that he’s making it all about himself.
Ginjury
I don’t think it’s that he’s necessarily making it all about himself, but that his defense team is working to paint a really vivid picture of him as vulnerable, disabled man who was a victim of his own paranoia. I was surprised to hear Nancy Grace say that his testimony has been very compelling/believable and I have to agree. Initially, I thought it was definitely intentional, but his testimony forces me to question that.
Calico
Same here, though I still don’t understand not checking to see if she was in bed beside him. It’s my first response to reach out to my SO when I hear a noise at night. Not because I want him to get up and see, but because my first instinct is to assume he is the one making the noise. I find it surprising that he gave her instructions but didn’t visually check to see if she was awake, heard him or understood what was happening.
O.P.
I am also changing my mind away from intentional based on his compelling displays of physical grief like the vomiting and hysterical crying in court, which I think are not fake. However, I would still put his actions in the category of criminally culpable homicide – involuntary manslaughter or negligent homicide or whatever the equivalent would be in SA.
Anon
I think it was intentional, but he did it in the heat of the moment and is now that it’s done with he’s sick over the fact that he actually murdered someone.
Tired Owl
I also think it was intentional. I’m reading it as he’s being sick with the reality of it and/or sick with the fear of the consequences if he’s convicted.
O.P.
Yes, that’s a good point. The grief could be for himself and spending the rest of his life behind bars. It’s also possible he feels despair and regret now, but still intended to kill Reeva at the time. An abuser can kill the woman he “loves” and regret it afterwards. It doesn’t mean it wasn’t first degree murder. The vomiting could be real or fake and it doesn’t really bear on whether he had the intent to kill Reeva more than a year ago. No matter what, he should go away for a long time.
Bonnie
I’ve seen too many people fake displays like that to be swayed. I haven’t watched all of the coverage but from what I’ve seen, it sounds intentional to me. A neighbor heard screaming and arguing before the shots and then it does not make sense to me that he would not have alerted his girlfriend to an intruder.
anon
But wasn’t there testimony from neighbors that they were heard fighting just before shots were fired? I think he’s a hothead who murdered her in the heat of an argument, and now he feels sick about either the act (who wouldn’t) or the consequences he faces.
tidewater
Maybe I’m jaded as a DV prosecutor, but I’m not buying it. I think he is mostly mourning the impending loss of his freedom.
DontBlameTheKids
Intentional.
Anonymous
Intentional. Can’t believe anyone would actually fall for the vomiting, etc
Wildkitten
He’s a very charming murderer, that one.
intentional
Intentional, because she was in the bathroom in the middle of the night with her phone and the door locked.
locomotive
agreed, also the presentation of hearing her screams and then subsequent multiple shots after the first shot (unless this is wrong! i have not been watching the trial proceedings, just reading news report summaries)
Blonde Lawyer
While I don’t lock my bathroom door now, I do take my phone with me to the bathroom in the middle of the night. I use it as a flashlight so I don’t trip and don’t wake up my sleeping husband with the regular light. When I lived with my parents I locked my bathroom door because no one in my family ever knocked and we shared a bathroom.
That said, I haven’t followed the case enough to have an opinion but am skeptical of not realizing your spouse isn’t in bed.

Dairy-free recipe blogs
Hi Hive,
Any recs for dairy-free recipe blogs? DH just saw his doc for stomach issues and it was suggested to him that he may be lactose intolerant. We generally follow a “clean eating” regimen, but it will probably be most difficult for him to eliminate cheese from his diet. Also any product recs (such as Lactaid milk and the like) would be greatly appreciated!
tesyaa
What kind of dairy does he eat? Cheese on pizza, soft cheese, yogurt? There are nondairy substitutes available commercially, in addition to things like silken tofu which can stand in for yogurt and sour cream.

Yes to all of those things. String cheese especially. Thanks for your response!

Often people with lactose issues can digest items made from goats milk. That would be the first thing I would try. There are a number of really nice cheeses and yogurts that are available, particularly at specialty stores.
I would check out Eat Nourishing Real Food Recipes. You can sort recipes by special diets, including dairy free. They would compliment your clean eating regimen. Many GAPS recipes are also dairy free – which you can find on Eat Nourishing. Also consider Paleo recipes.
I really like Nourished Kitchen. Many of her recipes are GAPS and Paleo friendly. Although she uses a fair share of dairy, you can find lots of great clean eating, dairy free recipes there, too.
Good luck!

trader joes has small wheels of goat brie for 2.79 or so, amazing price for a good one-two person size
Anon
If he’s opposed to giving it up, he could take Lactaid.
OHCFO
DH has lactose intolerance as well and avoids most dairy. But pizza, lasagna, and other favorites are still doable occasionally with a dose of Lactaid before hand. It’s sort of for “special occasions” and restaurant eating when we can’t be sure.
Anonymous
Goat dairy is easier to digest because the proteins are smaller. If he is really intolerant, it may still be too much for him, but just thought I’d throw this out there as an option to at least try to see if it can work for him. I am a huge cheese lover, so I’ve continued to eat goat cheddar, goat mozzarella, etc. WF has both, but you can get the goat cheddar at Trader Joe’s for a little bit cheaper. The only cow dairy cheese that I can’t quit is parmesan, so I would actually love to hear if anyone knows of a goat or other replacement for that–I haven’t seen it anywhere.
I also like goat milk (I just buy the brand at TJs), almond milk (Pacific brand), and coconut milk yogurt and ice cream (So Delicious for the yogurt, Luna & Larry’s for the ice cream).
zora
according to my mom’s doctor, she can eat really aged parmesans and hard cheeses, because they have no lactose left. She eats the regular aged parmesan from Trader Joes all the time and she doesn’t have problems.
anonforthis
Lactaid milk tastes really sweet to me and I find it hard to drink in anything other than cereal or coffee. For cooking/drinking, I prefer soy milk or almond milk.
roses
If he likes to drink a *lot* of milk, I’d avoid soy, as that can cause hormonal problems in men. Almond milk is delicious though!

+1 for Almond Milk

I cook from a number of vegan cookbooks and sites due to a dairy allergy–I really like post punk kitchen, sprouted kitchen (mostly vegan), and oh she glows. Any cookbook by Isa Chandra is very good, but I especially like Veganomicon. Vegan Soul Kitchen is also a great cookbook. Vegan cooking can be excellent–give it a try.

It’s not actually cheese, is it? It’s cheese product.

I think Kraft makes other products, but their American cheese (and generic imitations of it) are definitely not real cheese.

is*, not are. Oh hello basic grammar fail.

my mom is lactose intolerant but her doctor has told her that aged cheeses have no lactose. So she can eat aged parmesan, she has found some aged cheddars that she likes that are aged and don’t have lactose (I think one of them is Cracker Barrell actually) and she can eat anything that just has milk fat but no protein. So, she can eat baked goods if they are made with only butter and cream (not with margarine or milk or whey).
She has actually found a lactose-free substitute for pretty much everything she loves (except sour cream) and doesn’t miss anything any more. Also, in CA there is a dairy that sells lactose-free yogurt, sour cream, cream cheese, cottage cheese, etc. It’s all awesome.
hoola hoopa
I have had to go dairy free on multiple occasions, as have members of my family. I avoid substitutes and instead use avocados on sandwiches, sorbet instead of ice cream, mixed nuts instead of string cheese or yogurt, peanut butter or tofu spread instead of cream cheese, etc. My only exception is Tofutti Cuties ice cream bars. You’d never know they weren’t dairy. And when cooking, soy sour cream makes a good substitute for cream cheese, sour cream, etc. Although I suggest avoiding cheese/cream dishes, it’s nice to have an option when you’re craving them. While I’m a hard core cheese lover, it turns out that I actually like pizza without cheese.
He shouldn’t drink “lactose-free” milk initially. It does still contain a small amount of lactose. Reintroduce it after fully testing a completely lactose-free diet. Most people who are moderately lactose-intolerant can handle that and the Breyers lactose-free ice cream.
Also, recognize that cow milk allergy and lactose intolerance are caused by different compounds (protein vs sugar) and different causal paths (immune vs GI) but are often confused when looking at symptoms. Similar symptoms, different cause, different dietary restrictions. It’s actually nice if it’s a cow allergy, IME, because then you can eat goat/sheep products.
hoola hoopa
If my last paragraph wasn’t clear, some dairy products are high in lactose and others may be below the limit for an individual and can go back into their diet. Same for protein (ie, butter has negligible protein). So after a complete removal, he can try reintroducing some foods one at a time, probably starting with hard cheeses then softer and softer cultured products. If he still experiences symptoms with ‘lactose-free’ items, then he should see if he’s actually allergic to cow milk protein.

Thank you–very helpful! Thank you everyone for your responses. It’s nice to have a jumping off point now.
Anon in NYC
I realized that I have a lactose sensitivity (not an actual allergy) that was causing me to break out, feel (and look) very bloated, and other symptoms. I switched to almond milk in my coffee / on cereal (Silk brand), and I love it. Cow’s milk in my coffee just takes off to me now.
I never really liked yogurt, so that wasn’t an issue for me, but if your DH can handle sheep’s milk products, I would highly recommend Old Chatham Sheepherding Company. You can use the plain yogurt as a dairy base for things like tzatziki, etc.
I cut way back on my cheese consumption (I barely eat it at all these days), so that hasn’t been a problem for me. But, to echo others, I’ve heard that hard cheeses like parmesan might work for some people who are otherwise lactose-intolerant. Cutting out cheese was difficult in certain circumstances (tacos), but I have found that if I have a different way to add fats to the meal (like, avocado on my tacos) I don’t miss it as much.
I also recommend Oh She Glows for vegan recipes. She uses a lot of nutritional yeast to fake a cheese flavor on things. I haven’t worked with nutritional yeast too much, but she has this roasted tomato, onion, and pesto, cheese-less pizza that is unbelievably tasty. You could also google “cashew cheese,” which can be easily made at home and can be used in a lot of different cooking applications (Oh She Glows used it to make mac-and-cheese, as a sauce base for pizza, in lasagna, etc.).

My husband lost the ability to digest milk (creating induced lactose intolerance) in college. After we’d been married a few years and he was missing ice cream, he took Lactaid tablets. We were surprised to discover it only took a couple months before he no longer had to take the tablets, because his body started producing lactase again.

I have to write a new bio for our firm website and am totally stumped. I’m fairly junior so don’t exactly have a whole bunch of publications or anything. Plus while I do take a very active role in our files, I’m not exactly lead counsel so I’m not sure how or whether I should be describing that work. Any suggestions?
Anne Shirley
Google your law school classmates for ideas and look for people in your firm/similar firms who are your year.
Anon
We are always told to look at the bios of more senior attorneys with whom we work and pull relevent information from their’s (with the assumption that you are doing similar work)
LH
Look to the bios of other people at your level in your firm and use those, swapping out the details. I’m sure it varies, but in some places the junior attorneys tend to have much shorter bios that mostly summarize their education and previous work experience, and only the counsel/partners list specific representative matters.

Can anyone recommend a raincoat that’s almost exactly like the Lands End one pictured, but with a hood? I really don’t understand why nearly all the nicer looking raincoats lack hoods. Sometimes I just don’t want to pull out my umbrella.

I have a similar one with a hood from London Fog.

Try this one from LLBean: Easy Care Mackintosh Coat
For a more completely waterproof raincoat, try Bean’s Stowaway Coat with Gore-tex. I got a similar model 11 years ago and it’s still completely waterproof, looks sharp, etc.

Or you could get a rain hat. :)

Why do I not have a rain hat! I didn’t even realize that was missing from my life.
Oh right, it’s because I live in a desert. But still!
PinkKeyboard
I tried on a gorgeous purple London Fog at Nordstrom which had a hood but it was sadly too big. But it was great quality and even had a removable liner!
Legal Marketer
First, look at other bios on other firm websites of attorneys who have a similar practice. It should give you some good ideas. As for your client work, describe it the way the senior attorneys are describing it, but change the verb to “Assisted with, researched for, was involved in, drafted argument outlining…”
You indicate that you’re junior, so it’s likely clients aren’t choosing the firm based on your experience, but if they find out you’re working on their matters, they may look up your bio to verify that you have worked on similar matters in the past, or at least done work that is relevant.
Include types of companies (national/global/regional), industries and size of companies with which you have worked to show a variety of experience. I would also suggest emphasizing the type of work you would like to do more often. Partners in big firms tend to look there if they need associates for help but aren’t sure who is best suited for it.
Also, as someone who has tracked website analytics, please know that when you send out a resume, the company receiving it is certainly going to your website bio. It took awhile before the entire firm realized marketing was always the first to know when an attorney was job-hunting. We would see a spike in their page views and unless they recently won an award or joined a BOD, it was fairly clear why.

I have the belted trench from a couple of years ago. I get a ton of complements on it. Nice material and excellent construction. It’s more waterproof than I thought it would be (I’m in the PNW). Definitely size down if you are narrow in the shoulders. It has a generous cut, I assume so that you don’t have to size up to fit over bulky sweaters.
B
I just got the belted trench linked above in the kelly green and I love it! It can actually be worn with or without the belt (the pictures on the Lands End website show it both ways). I ordered a ton of jackets from Nordstrom and BR, and this one was the clear winner as it didn’t have all the extra buckles and weight that many of the others had. I live in Texas, so use it not so much as a rain coat but as a general spring/fall jacket for chilly mornings. I’ve only had it a few weeks and have received tons of compliments. Highly recommend!
B
Also love that it comes in petites. I am short waisted, and the belt actually hits at the right spot on this.

Has anyone had milk and honey shoes? I like that you can design them. My number one concern is comfort. Do they have arch support? well made? I have very wide feet and they say they can do a wide width but would love to know if people found the comfortable. I think I would do the one inch wedge or flats

I got some for my wedding, and they were great. Great quality, comfortable, and excellent customer service. When the shoes (slingbacks) initially came, the strap was so long that even buckled on the smallest setting, my feet wouldn’t stay in. And we were close to the deadline. One email later, they paid to ship them back, fixed the strap, and shipped them to me again– all in less than a week. If they weren’t so expensive, I’d own a couple more pairs.

Oh, and despite dire warnings that it would not be possible, I wore them (2.5″ heels) all night. For all of the dancing. And was not crippled.

A bit of a silly question, but here goes: does anyone know of a Chrome extension that not only blocks websites, but will shame me for trying to type them in at all? For example, I want to discourage online shopping during the day, so I have deleted store websites from my history so that they won’t auto-complete in the search bar so quickly. I’ve also installed the Blocklist extension so that if I try to go to a store website, it won’t let me. But I also kind of want the block page to say something like “Really?” or “You do not want to go here. Stop trying!” to shame me so that I won’t be tempted to cheat and unblock the site, or get around it in a different browser.

Do you have any financial goals you’re trying to achieve? I have a low-tech method that works for me. I have a post-it on the edge of my computer screen that has my monthly student loan payment on it (no dollar signs). To anyone else it looks like a random number, but its import is seared into my head, for sure. It shames me and gives me a reality check, and reminds me that I already “treated” myself to higher education. I find myself assessing silk blouses in terms of my payments, and it really has been working.

Help – I am freaking out! I work in consulting and am being given more responsibilities (i.e., am now managing a project with at least one person to manage). This should be a good thing but I am completely terrified of failing at this. What if I am unable to deliver all the work that the partner has promised the client? What if I am terrible at managing people? What if I drop the ball on something? I also hate following up on things that I am told to follow up on because that adds more work to my ever-growing list of things to do (I am sure other consultants here can relate to this).
So…shouldn’t I be happy that I am being ‘promoted’ to the next level, albeit in a trial scenario? Why do I not want this? I am seriously scared of messing up, scared of doing more work and not getting my already meager supply of sleep, scared of being responsible for an outcome that I did not promise to deliver.
Looking for some moral support from others who have gone through this :(
