Frugal Friday’s TPS Report: Long Sleeve Deep V-Neck Drape Top

·
Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. Lands End Long Sleeve Deep V-Neck Drape TopI'm a big fan of Lands' End lately, having recently purchased a bunch of ponte dresses which are fabulous (and sadly mostly sold out). One of the pieces I have (in both the green and the red leaves) that's still mostly in stock is this long sleeve deep V-neck drape top. It's still available in select regular sizes, with a lot more sizes and colors in the petite section. With the sale going on (30% off everything, plus free shipping with $50+), it's an even better deal. It is a thin material, and it's still a fairly deep drape, but I like the way it looks with my curves; it would look great with a blazer and an interesting necklace. The top was $34, but is now marked to $10.99 plus 30% off (solid colors); very limited quantities of patterned versions are also in the Lands' End deep discount section, On the Counter; today they're marked to $4.50 (plus 30% off). Long Sleeve Deep V-neck Drape Top Seen a great piece you'd like to recommend? Please e-mail tps@corporette.com. (L-4)

  1. Hey Hive! I have been invited to speak on a panel at an industry conference in a few weeks. I have never done this kind of thing before and I’m a bit nervous, I’m not sure I am as much of an expert as the moderator thinks I am but I’m going to give it a shot! I think I can probably fake like I feel that I know what I’m doing. I know one of the other panelists and I think he’s a good fit for the subject matter, especially areas I don’t know as much about, which makes me feel better. I talked to the moderator quite a bit about my experience and what I can and can’t offer and I feel like I haven’t misrepresented myself so whatever happens I want to do my best. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

    1. Yay! Fruegel Friday’s! I love Fruegel Friday’s and this blouse (beleive it or not) b/c I will wear it OUTSIDE of work. A deep vee neck blouse is a VIRTUEAL invitation for Frank to take a look at my boobie’s and the last time he did that he spilled coffee on my computer. Now I am useing the manageing partners computer and it is dirty and sticky from his coffee I think.

As for the OP, there is NOTHING to worry about. If you have ever litigated a case, it is alot easier b/c you do NOT have to stand up where peeople can see all of you. You either are sitting (on a panel), or if you are standing, you have a LECTERN where all peeople see is your body from mabye your waste up. No one can stare at your legs or your tuchus and make you self consious. So If you prepare, you should be FINE. YAY!

Yesterday, I was walkeing past the Waldorf on my way home from work and a bunch of UN diplomat’s came out. One of them was stareing at me and he had his assisteant tell me that the diplomat wanted to complement me. I said I thought he was doeing a great job. He smiled and then they rushed him into a big Cadilac SUV and he drove off. I do NOT know what country they were from, but they had accent’s. I think they could have been from Europe. I told Myrna and she said I should have gotten their card’s. FOOEY b/c I was dressed all schleppey and had my Nike Air’s on, with a dress so they probably thought I was a cleaneing lady or something. At least I got a complement from a diplomat!!!! YAY!!

  2. Is anyone else getting the crazy “club” dress ads on the right? Any way to make it go away? I really don’t need that much b**b hanging out on my work computer!

    1. I’ve been getting Eva Mendes for NY&Company ads all week… and they’re kind of working. I actually clicked over to their site yesterday, and I haven’t looked at NY&Co. since my early 20s.

    2. I’m getting Audible.com, but that’s probably because I just bought new audiobooks on there this morning.

    3. I’m getting Kiera Knightley advertising Gillette’s Venus razor – which I DO love – despite generally feeling grumpy about “just for women” toiletries (razors are a little different since they serve different purposes for men and women.) I think the ads that show up for you depend on where you have gone on the web and what you’ve looked at (so you can imagine my vicarious shopping activities drives the google ads sense formula totally crazy – there was a period there when I had lots of ads for old lady sweaters once – it was glorious.)

      1. TCFKAG I keep getting those Hudson’s Bay jackets you found for me on tumblr last week (The ones with the hood – THANKS AGAIN!) It makes me so happy because I bought one of them and I love it so much! Of course it got warmer so I could only wear it one day but next week it’s supposed to cool down again! I’ve already gotten compliments on it with the one day. Thanks so much.

    4. I typically get engagement rings, which is odd since I’ve been married for over 2 years!

      1. I’ve been getting engagement ring ads too. I wish I could think of it as a sign as opposed to knowing that its because I like to look at the pretty shiny things!

      2. How are you doing? Have you been able to come off bed rest? Just hoping everything is OK!

        1. Nonny you’re so sweet. I’m all better. We had to get some tests done on Wednesday but now I’m back in business and the baby is doing great!

    5. I get all sorts of ads and I assume they are somehow related to other sites I’ve browsed that day. Examples include – various clothing companies, engagement rings, household cleaning products, concealed carry laws, etc.

      1. I was getting maternity wear ads earlier (not likely) and now I’m getting ads for salwar kameez, thanks to Susedna, who sent me a bunch of links yesterday.

    6. I know no harm was intended, but can we try to avoid the ableism here (“crazy”)?

          1. Really? This is new to me. So are we not to use the idiom “to drive one crazy?” Because it’s ableist and offensive to the mentally ill?

            Huh.

          2. I think it’s much more offensive to call a mentally ill person crazy than to say that a club dress is crazy. But I think there are a few people on this thread who accidentally came to the wrong site. I think you were looking for stfucorpor**te’s tumblr.

          3. I’m only mentioning it because a lot of people find it dismissive and offensive. But if you like intentionally offending people, carry on, I guess.

          4. I need to think about this some more. As Orangerie pointed out, only the first dictionary definition is (absolutely, without a doubt) offensive (when applied to the mentally ill):

            1. mentally deranged; demented; insane.
            2. senseless; impractical; totally unsound: a crazy scheme.
            3. Informal. intensely enthusiastic; passionately excited: crazy about baseball.
            4. Informal. very enamored or infatuated (usually followed by about ): He was crazy about her.
            5. Informal. intensely anxious or eager; impatient: I’m crazy to try those new skis.

It’s a useful word in a lot of contexts, but on the other hand I do see how it can absolutely be offensive in certain contexts. Not clear to me that we need to throw the baby out with the bathwater, even if such a thing were possible. (With no offense meant to all those bathing babies out there…)

          5. Orangerie, it’s not about dictionary definitions–we can all look words up. But like Anonymous said, it’s about not intentionally choosing and using words that other people find hurtful–whether it’s casual ableism or racism or sex/gender or something else.

Anonymous made a polite (I thought) post to let people know the word “crazy” can be hurtful. Why does the response to a post like that have to be something like “How is that offensive?” or “You shouldn’t be offended by that!”?

          6. I don’t see the point in exonerating a word from my daily vocabulary because it has one potentially offensive meaning. That’s a slippery slope you could apply to a lot of words and frankly I find it exhausting. I wasn’t questioning how specific uses of the word crazy are offensive, just stating that it has other legitimate meanings that aren’t offensive in the slightest.

    7. I think the ads are based upon your browsing history. Clear cookies in your internet program.

      1. I just made my grocery list this morning to whip up that cake this weekend…love that recipe!

  3. I’m taking advantage of the Lands End discount to buy that ponte dress with the pockets in leopard. Hoping it looks as nice in real life as it does in the picture. Plan to wear it with a dark brown jacket and tights.

    1. I love that dress. I’m trying to hold off buying it until October 1st when my monthly budge resets. The discount ends that day.

Never thought I’d wear leopard, but I think the print could work with black or brown tights and a cardigan. I have the dress in 4 other colors already so I know it looks good.

  4. TJ – someone earlier in the week posted about having Verizon’s unlimited data plan and getting a new phone (without paying sticker price?). How would that work? Tips and tricks, please!

    1. My husband and I used to have the unlimited data plan and got new phones at Best Buy. We ended up switching to a non-unlimited data plan. However, our call plan and text is now unlimited. We were concerned about non-unlimited data, but it has not been a problem. We also use WiFi at home instead of the Verizon network.

I would reccomend going to Best Buy. We turned in our old phones and got some money back towards our purchase.

The only thing is that they switched us to the new plan in the store, but for some reason it did not get updated properly so we had to call Verizon to get the plan set up properly.

    2. I don’t know if it’s different for AT&T, but I’ve had unlimited data with AT&T since the days of the 3G model. I’ve since upgraded to the 4 and then the 5 at the subsidized price without any issues keeping my unlimited data (of course, “unlimited” is throttled so it’s not so unlimited, but that’s another issue…). I’ve ordered the phone from apple dot com both times and activated it myself online. They just rollover my exact same plan unless I opt to make changes.

    3. We are grandfatherered into Verizon’s unlimited data plan and have been able to maintain it while upgrading phones. We’ve had to upgrade in person in a store instead of online to maintain our status though.

  5. I have finally found the solution to my arctic office – a puffer vest. Seriously considering making it more than just a casual Friday item…

    1. I have a faux shearling vest that I use for extra warmth indoors. I’ve convinced myself that it goes with everything and isn’t too sloppy-looking for informal work occasions. I have it on for at least some period every day.

  6. I was really excited this week to get a mug that plugs into a USB port to keep the drink warm. I’ve had one that plugs into a car for a while, and love it, but would like to have something for my desk.

BUT, it didn’t work. When I plugged into my work computer, the computer told me it was going to take too much power and shut down the port. I tried plugging it into the port on an I-phone wall charger, but got no result. So, I am very disappointed.

Has anyone had a warming mug that works well for them on a desk? I like to start my morning with a big cup of tea, and sip off of it for the next 2-3 hours. (I’m not a fan of those types that you set your mug on, because a) the mug is never big enough, and b) I inevitably knock it over and make a huge mess.

      1. I like to sip off of it gradually, so I don’t really want to have to open and close something every time. (And opening it would obviously defeat the purpose.)

        1. Ah, what you need is the Thermos Nissan travel mug (search on Amazon). I have had one for years and LOVE IT. It will literally keep drinks warm for an entire day. In fact, I often have to remember to let it cool off before my first drink because it keeps it at boiling temperature for the first few hours.

The best thing about it though (for your needs) is that it has this super simple flip top lid and drink “spout” thing that makes it easy to open, sip, close, repeat.

          1. I have one of those and love it too ! It keeps tea and coffee hot for several hours. I have come back from lunch and still had my morning coffee hot.

          2. Sorry–I did not mean to hit “report” for this comment.

      2. I am currently sipping hot coffee out of my Thermos-brand travel coffee mug which I made three hours ago. Big fan.

      1. Reallllly. Hmmm… Is it easy to clean? Reasonably spill-proof? I lost my last mug (don’t ask) and I’m looking for a new one, but am currently unimpressed by most of the offerings I’ve seen.

    1. I bought an ex a mug warmer (link to follow) that warms any regular mug from beneath. We broke up shortly after, so I don’t know how well it worked for him, but it gets great reviews on amazon. It plugs into an outlet but claims to have a long cord.

    2. I used to have a Nissan stainless steel travel mug that kept my coffee really hot for a remarkably long time, even with the spout left open for sipping. The only problem I found was that washing it in the dishwasher didn’t seem to clean it thoroughly enough and I was too lazy to hand wash it every day. :)

    3. I just make a game out of trying to drink my coffee before it gets cold. If I get called away and come back to a half-cup of cold coffee, I lose. But the consolation prize is I get to get up and pour a new cup.

    4. You need these. http://www.joulies.com/

They are amazing. They kept my fiance’s cup of coffee warm for 4 hours when we left it in my car in the middle of January (~20 degrees outside).

Bonus: they also instantly cool the drink to drinking temperature so you never burn yourself.

  7. PSA: I <3 Land's End ponte dresses, but if you're going to throw them in the washer, make sure to turn them inside out and possibly put them in a lingerie bag. After many successful inside-out washes with no discernable change in the fabric, my SO washed my favorite eggplant ponte dress without turning it inside out, and that single wash made it pill like crazy.

    1. I bet you we have the same dress – mine pilled a bit after the first wash too! Weirdly it never got worse. Its like it reached a level of pilling it was comfortable at and just stayed there. :-P

  8. So I have wanted that light purple skirt she’s wearing since…oh…about the day after it came out. But it sold out hecka fast. But the new season brings new skirts, including a very similar skirt in eggplant! Link in the next post to avoid moderation (for those interested of course.)

  9. Has anyone tried the online styling box Stitch Fix? I’ve read about it in the blogosphere and was curious if any of you ladies have tried it? Basically Stitch Fix sends you five pieces (jewelry or clothing) based on your specifications of style and price and you have the option to purchase any or all of the items in the box. TIA!

    1. I did it and none of the clothes were work appropriate, but my friends who have more casual lifestyles (grad students and such) absolutely love it.

    2. About five of my co-workers have tried it. Some love it, and others feel it hasn’t really pin pointed their style correctly. But I think everyone has enjoyed the process. It’s something different.

  10. Shopping challenge – I’m going to Monday Night Football this week! I measured the wristlet I take to the gym and it is just over the size limit. I need to carry debit card, cash, driver’s license, keys (kinda bulky), and smartphone. Any thoughts? I can’t shop online because I won’t get it in time, given the weekend. I thought I would try DSW and Target tomorrow. The size limits are 6.5 in x 4.5 in. I have a little cosmetic bag that size that would hold my stuff but I’m worried because it doesn’t have a strap. Even better would be cross-body. Help!

    1. Can you strip your keys down to just your car and your house for gameday purposes only?

    2. Can you take one key off the ring and carry only that? If you’re driving, for example, lock your key ring in your glove compartment and bring only your car key into the stadium. If you can’t find anything to use besides your cosmetic bag, could you buy a piece of ribbon and sew a wrist-size loop of it onto the end of the bag? (Or safety pin it carefully with the pin on the inside and with the pin going through the layers of bag and ribbon several times, if your sewing skills aren’t up sewing in the ribbon.)

      1. I thought about that and I may do it. My keyring has a wad of those store keyfob things, a Derek Jeter keyfob and a hello kitty as a cupcake charm (yeah ridiculous). I only really need two keys – my front door and my car. But my car key has a remote so even that is a little bulky.

        1. I have a key ring from Coach outlet that works great for these situations – it’s one of those valet key rings, so it has two rings with a latch connecting them. I put just my car key (with key fob) on one of the rings and all my other keys and junk on the other. That way, when I need to pare down, I can quickly take off my car key and leave the rest of them behind in the glove box of my locked car. Sounds simple and silly, but it saves me headaches so regularly – I love it. I always hated trying to wiggle my car key on and off of another ring. I think it cost like $20.

    3. I know you asked for bag help, but I don’t have any (my only crossbody, which I love, is the MBMJ Karlie and it is a bit longer than your limit).

However, in your situation, I would wear jeans (or other pants with pockets). Debit card, cash, drivers license get held together with a hair elastic and put in front left pocket. Smartphone in front right pocket. Key in whichever pocket makes the most sense (one key only – if you are driving, take your car key off your chain and lock the rest of the keys in the car).

      1. +1.

Also if you put your keys on a separate ring, you can loop the ring through your belt loop rory gilmore style.

      2. Maybe I’m wearing my jeans way too tight, but my smartphone does not fit in my front pockets at all.

        1. Maybe it depends on the size of your phone as well? I’m wearing J.Crew matchstick jeans and my iPhone fits in my front pocket.

          1. Not as easy with a Galaxy 4, unless your pockets go halfway down your thighs!

I usually opt for a vest or jacket with inside pockets, but that would probably be too warm in New Orleans. These new NFL rules are ridiculous, they don’t understand the female fans at all! I don’t carry around giant purses, but I at least like room for my wallet and a phone.

Enjoy the game, should be a great one!

          2. Yeah I have a Galaxy Stratosphere, which is a little bulky because it has a sliding keyboard.

    4. Don’t have anything specific but Target is definitely a good idea. They usually have a bunch of very cheap (and flimsy, but I assume you’re not going for super luxe or something you’ll have for years here) tiny cross-body bags. Look for the Xhilaration stuff…I know it’s for teens, but they’re pretty much perfect for what you need and usually come in fun colors.

      1. Thank you for this!! I have been to two NFL games this year and have been frustrated by having to keep all of my things in back pockets (my front pockets are too small and it’s hard to sit down with stuff in them). I am a repeat offender of ditching my phone in the toilet because it’s in my back pocket and I’d like to avoid doing it again!

      1. I’m soooo excited. It’s going to be a great game – both teams are 3-0. With my SO away and my Dad gone, I thought it would good to plan lots of fun activities for the week of my birthday. So I start with MNF, then lunch with girlfriends on my actual birthday, then Kristen Chenoweth with the LPO on Saturday with three friends.

        1. The football doesn’t appeal to me, but I am SO jealous about Kristen Chenoweth! That should be amazing! I just adore her voice.

          1. It should be a lot of fun, too! One of my girlfriends who is going was actually in A Chorus Line with Kristen Chenoweth. They two of them play the two main female leads. My friend even has a scrapbook with pictures and articles about the show. This was in Oklahoma City, long before Kristen Chenoweth hit Broadway. When I saw the announcement, I knew she would want to go, so we immediately planned it as a girls’ night.

    5. If what you have is just over the limit, I would just take it in. Are they really going to stop you to measure it? I think you’ll just get waved in.

      1. I’m not sure. The regulations say that measurement AT MOST. I don’t want to get turned away.

    6. Can I just whine for a second about the NFL and how their new policy is basically a we don’t give a crap about our women fans who make up almost half of our fan base. I love football but probably won’t rush to a game anytime soon because of this policy.

        1. Well – its especially frustrating for those of us in northern climes who counted on the ability to bring a purse or bag to the game so that we could bring (for example) a blanket or gloves and a hat to the game for every member of the family. You do not know cold until you go to a night sporting even in New England (or Wisconsin or New York). Basically it just makes life a LOT more difficult.

But seriously, they have instituted a rule that essentially says – you can bring in a clear plastic zip lock bag or a purse smaller than a wallet – and that’s it. Its as strict as the bar exam. And while you can say “its only one day” or whatever – its a day where you’re going to be stuck – in potentially inclement weather – with 50,000 other people – unable to get back to your car. And you paid several hundred dollars for the privilege. Ugh.

          1. Wow, I never even thought of that since I’m going to the Dome. Years ago, after I had moved here and went to many games at the Dome (my then-boyfriend’s dad was a high muckety muck in the state who got tickets for every home game – in suites), I went to PA for Christmas and went to a Steelers game with my brother and his wife. We tailgated for hours and I was freezing. We started to go in the stadium and I thought “Oh, it’ll be warmer inside” then it suddenly occurred to me that it was an outdoor stadium. If it hadn’t been for the hot chocolate with Jagermeister I would have died.

          2. The coldest I have ever been was after a day game at Giants stadium in November. The winds must have been 30 mph+. it was days before my fingers stopped tingling, and I was wearing ski gloves! TCKFAG, the NFL says you can carry in a blanket over your shoulder (“Green Bay style” as they referred to it) for each person attending. Not as convenient, but less chance of freezing.

I don’t know if the new policy would necessarily stop me from going, but I am frustrated by it. Especially the part where the NFL started selling clear bags that conform to the policy. Was my $160 ticket not enough revenue for you NFL?

        2. It is also an issue for people that need to carry medical supplies that they are not comfortable keeping in a clear bag or declaring to security.

          1. The policy says that they will make an exception for medical supplies.

And actually, they allow blankets but you have to carry them separately, not in a tote bag.

      1. im right there with you. its bs. and i wont go to a game (though in fairness, id almost always rather watch the game from the comfort of my living room)

      2. So annoying. I went to a few Green Bay games last year and this is going to be a hassle. We bought a roll-up blanket with a strap last year – I’m assuming we’ll now have to carry it without the strap, so that means I have to carry a blanket, a seat for the bleachers, cardboard to stand on, my phone, my wallet, my car key, contact solution, handwarmers, carmex and my ticket in my coat pockets or my hands. Awesome. I’m going to look like a homeless abominable snowman.

        1. There are rules for seat cushions now too. No pockets, zippers, covers, or compartments

      3. I refuse to go to any games with this new policy. Our stadium is outside, so I always carried a purse with season specific needs (sunscreen, sunglasses, gloves, hat, Kleenex). The team offered me a clear “bag” if we renewed our tickets but there are certain things like tamp*ns I don’t want everyone to see.

    7. NOLA, can you get to a Fleurty Girl store? They made clear bags for this purpose in the approved size. Check their website and maybe call to make sure that they are available- I think they were selling out. I don’t live in NOLA but I visited a year and a half ago and fell in love with this store, so I follow them on Facebook :) I am afraid to post the link for fear it won’t post!! Have fun!

      1. Good idea! Ironically, I have been to both Fleurty Girl and the Black & Gold store in the past couple of weeks, but I wasn’t even thinking about the bag thing because I was certain my current wristlet would work.

  11. Closing gift T/J. Ladies, has anyone sent a fruit basket/arrangement or the like to a client post-closing? We are representing the sellers in the sale of their business. It has been a long process so I have had extensive contact with this client. The office manager has particularly done a lot of work but just getting her flowers feels too exclusive. Are edibles for the office to share out of line?

    1. Are you a lawyer? Is this common? If you were being hired by the client, wouldn’t they send you something? I can’t imagine a situation where I hired someone to help me with something and then they sent me a gift.

If it’s a situation where you want to recognize the work of the office manager, would it be more helpful to tell her boss that she was a great help?

I’m just starting out, so maybe this is just something that I don’t know, but it seems strange to me on principle.

  12. Best place to buy men’s shirts? My fella owns only one Brooks Brothers shirt and loves the way it wears, but the price point is a bit out of our range and the fabric patterns/colors are more conservative than he needs. Are there other brands that are similar in cut/quality that you can recommend?

    1. Not sure about how the cut compares, but my husband swears by Banana Republic.

    2. Lands end. Not kidding. My hubs loves BB dress shirts and I try to sneak in some lands end ones occasionally. Jos a bank is fine, but only buy there on crazy sale. Regular price is too high for quality in my opinion.

      1. The benefit of LE ones is that they last for-ever. Seriously. My husband loves the BB ones, but they just don’t last. The “no-iron-ness” of them wears out faster and they just aren’t as hardy. For instance, my husband put his elbow thru the sleeve of one that was only about a year old last week (and while it got regular wear, it wasn’t constant – he rotates about 30-40 of these no-iron shirts). The LE ones are still going strong 4+ years after purchase.

    3. Costco. My husband swears by the Kirkland brand no-iron shirts and gets complimented on his ALL the time.

      1. Mr. TCFKAG would second this recommendation. He also like LL Bean both for casual and slightly more formal shirts.

    4. Lands’ End are great. My husband and my supervisor both wear the Kirkland ones as well and they seem to hold up well.

    5. If he likes them, you can time your purchases so they are down to about $44/shirt. If you go into a store and talk to a salesman who looks like he’s been there a while, he’ll explain better, but they basically often do a friends & family and a buy 2 for x price deal that can be combined, and your salesman – if you make friends – can call you in advance to let you know. Right now, btw, BB is doing a friends & family 25% off everything also. So their basic men’s dress shirts are about $50.

If you just want something else, Banana Republic and Zara both makes nice men’s shirts.

  13. I am not usually one for buying online (I generally prefer to try on first), but for $10 each after S&H, I jumped on those tops, in all three available colors. I love the style and I’m always on the hunt for new layering pieces.

  14. Sorry to sound like I’m obsessed with Land’s End (I kind of am), but has anyone worn their shoes? Specifically I’m looking at their knee-high boots and Ashby patent heels. Shipping is free both ways with them, so it’s no big deal, but I’d love a few real life reviews. Weirdly, there’s no reviews at all on the heels.

    1. I have the Ashby heels in 3 colors. They work really well for me. Quality is decent=some of the LE shoes I’ve gotten have been cheap looking, these have held up well. I also have the riding boots in two colors; I have fatted calves and they are the ONLY boot I’ve found that looks good and zips easily.

If you have a Sears near you, you may be able to try them on/see them in person.

      1. +1 Fatted Calves! You cracked me up.

Thanks, this is the reassurance I was hoping for. Btw, if anyone else needs some basic heels, every Ashby color except Leopard is $41 or under with the 30% off coupon!

    2. I have a pair of flat riding boots from Lands End and they’ve held up great, are super-comfortable, and have basically become my go-to fall/winter shoes. No complaints!

    3. I find their shoes hit or miss. The Ashby runs narrow but is quite cute. I have two pairs and wear them as “office shoes.” I wouldn’t wear them to court since they get a bit uncomfortable by the end of the day.

      1. Second this. I have purchased 2 pairs of their shoes over the past 3 or so years and 2 of them didn’t make it through one season. And I am not hard on shoes and rotate very frequently. The 3rd pair is on its 3rd year and are holding up just fine.

      2. Really interesting. I have wide feet (I can wear a normal width but often get a wide when available) and had NO trouble with the Ashbys. I also find them really comfy–I can wear them to/through the airport with no issues at all.

        1. I have wide feet but can usually get a medium if I order up a size and my Ashbys are still snug…they are cute though! I have the grey and the suede yellow and if the price on the leopard ever drops, I’d consider them.

  15. I’m on the hunt for a fall jacket. I need something for the in-between weather, where you need a jacket but you don’t need a winter coat. I already have a trench coat, so I don’t need that. I have an old corduroy jacket from Gap that’s the right weight, but it doesn’t fit anymore. It’s also approximately the right dressiness…I’m not looking for a fleece or denim jacket, more something that’s a little dressier to wear to work or a night out. Not entirely ruling out puffer jackets, but it would have to be a nicer one. Must have long sleeves.

I’ve looked online at Loft (one potential option), Ann Taylor (nothing appropriate), JCrew (some potentials, but they’re a bit pricey and possibly too warm), Banana Republic (maybe one option), the Limited (doesn’t seem to have any jackets at all), and in person at my local tiny Macy’s (nothing even in this category other than some crummy faux leather jackets).

Final criteria: I’m petite, so petite sizing is a plus. Prefer hip length but not cropped because how would that keep me warm? Budget is around $150, maybe up to $200 for something perfect or amazing quality.

Has anyone seen any good fall jackets out there? I’m in the DC area and will probably be hitting the stores with my mom next weekend when she comes to visit.

    1. Possibly too casual for what you are looking for but what about the Old Navy Twill Pea Coat? I have last year’s version and it’s perfect for the weather we have been having (in DC) the past week. It’s under $50/plus they always have a discount.

    2. How about a quilted one (not a puffer)? I’ve had one (from a dept store) in a dark purple color that I get tons of use out of.
      LL Bean has one: http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/78463?feat=610-GN1&page=quilted-riding-jacket

They also have a boiled wool one that could work, depending on how those pockets look in person:
      http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/70411?feat=610-GN1&page=bean-s-boiled-wool-jacket&attrValue_0=Lapis%20Slate

Sorry too lazy for short URLs today!

    3. I’m looking for something similar- want something with a bit of style, I’ve been searching everywhere and having a hard time. A lot of what I see won’t be warm enough- they’re more like blazer weight, and i have a collection of blazers I can wear already.

      1. Sorry- didn’t finish the thought. Aritzia’s website has several. Maybe try Zara?

        1. Oh, I had forgotten about Zara. They do have several online that could work. Will put them on the list of places to go!

    4. I just got a Laundry lightweight quilted jacket at the Nordstrom in Pentagon City. It’s perfect for fall weather and comes in petite and regular sizes. I have worn it to work and it looks perfectly appropriate with skirts, dresses and trousers. I’ll put a link in a separate comment.

      1. That’s one of the ones I liked from JCrew! I’m a little bummed that it only comes in the olive color in petites because I really like the navy, but hopefully I’ll be able to try on the regular size in the store to see if I even need a petite. Glad to hear from someone who has tried this one on :)

  16. Planning an unanticipated and quick move to Chicago. My biggest worry is childcare. We’ll be living in West Loop area. Can anyone recommend reputable daycare or nanny agencies or a personal nanny recommendation for Chicago??

    1. No advice for Chicago, specifically, but we’ve moved and had to find childcare a few times and I usually start by checking the NAEYC website, which has a childcare locator.

    2. Join a group called NPNparents (dot) org. Tons of helpful information.
How old are your kids? Infant spots in the big daycare centers tend to fill up crazy early (like, get on the wait-list when you’re pregnant early) but once kids are in toddler room or above, more openings are available.
If you want to post an email address, I’m happy to email more. I have a great nanny who always has nanny friends looking for work.

      1. Thank you! My email is cguptamail at yahoo dot com. I’d love any recommendations you have. I have an infant and realize that finding a daycare spot right away is going to be next to impossible but figured I could try. I think we’ll do nanny for a few months until we get into daycare but will get on waitlists right away

    3. A family friend works for the Mary Crane Center and they do amazing work. She is incredibly focused on early childhood education.

  17. I need some help here – how do you all get your urge to shop under control? I spent the last year in a clerkship, and money was tight, so I haven’t done any “real” shopping in a year – I’ve replaced staples that have worn out, but that’s really all I could afford to do. Now I’m back in Biglaw (with the attendant Biglaw salary) and I’m OBSESSED with buying ALL THE THINGS. (Yes, Ellen-caps, that’s how serious this is.)

I’ve given myself a monthly shopping budget, but I’m so behind in replacing “big ticket” items (new black boots, work shoes that won’t cripple me, suits because I went from a “business casual” job to a “suits daily” job) that my entire shopping budget is eaten up by “things I need” from now until January, and I alternate between feeling sad that I can’t buy *anything* fun or pretty and wanting to just blow off my budget completely and do whatever I want. I want to be financially responsible, really, I do, but I also really want new pretty clothes to wear, and I’m having a hard time reconciling the two. Suggestions for coping with (and sticking with) a self-imposed limitation even when it feels like it’s sucking all of the fun out of everything?

    1. I would spend some time staring at your budget to see if there’s “fun” money elsewhere without compromising your savings goals. Do you spend money going out for drinks that you’d rather spend on clothes? Can you spend money shopping with friends on the weekend instead of going to an expensive brunch? I find the best way to stick with my budget is to actually feel good about where all the money goes (and to remember where it all goes!). Good luck!

    2. Can you set aside a small amount of your budget to buy yourself something fun/trendy from places like Forever 21 or to go thrifting? As low as $15 can help indulge the urge. Sometimes all you need is a new necklace or bracelet to make your closet feel fun again. Also, if you have stuff that you don’t wear, how about organizing a swap party with some of your friends? You could make it an accessories swap if people aren’t the same size. There are even organized swap parties in some cities (search for swap party cityname).

    3. My husband and I have just instituted a budget and looking at our September expenditures, we had a good framework but were way off in some areas. I think a budget can be adjusted if you realize you didn’t budget correctly but I also wonder if you can consign some of your business casual stuff? You could also spend some time cruising blogs for inspiration for ways to restyle your current wardrobe.

    4. When shopping focus on items that can serve multiple purposes, e.g. tops that can be worn under suits and with jeans on the weekend. If your suits areare consiervative, you can play more with color and pattern with shirts.

    5. I recomend you do what my dad did. He took 100% control of my finance’s, and put’s me on a BUDGET.

      1) Dad must pre-APPROVE all expenses BEFORE I spend any money
      2) Dad get’s all of my bills and pay’s them for me
      3) Dad get’s automatic deposit of my salary from the manageing partner and
      4) Dad control’s my 401(k) and other investment account with Merrell Lynch
      5) Dad negoteate’s my salary and benefit’s with the manageing partner, includeing my partnership terms –Yay!
      6) Dad oversee’s my health by monitoring my exercize and mileage on my FITBIT (Fooey!)

Right now, Dad is lookeing for another man to take this over from him, which is how he got out of doeing this for Rosa. Because Rosa got MARRIED to Ed, Dad has been insisting that I find a guy like Ed to MARRY me so that I do NOT have to do this, and he will NOT let me even try to do this myself.

So because I have a man to do all of this for me, I can focus myself on my work, become an excelent litiegator, and also a great cookie baker. I also am workeing on slimming down my tuchus thru my walkeing and fitbit. If I am abel to get a guy to MARRY me and have a baby soon, Grandma Leyeh will give me $50K. YAY!

I do NOT think you need to do all of these thing’s, but if you get a guy to do all of these for you, will become a great litiegator like me, become a partner, get MARRIED, and let him do all of the work. YAY!!!!

  18. Does anyone have a recipe for baked goods that either last 1-2 weeks or even better, get tastier with age? I want to send home-baked goods in a care package to a friend accross the country, and am struggling to find something that won’t get stale/too moist/crumbly.

Bonus points if it’s a loaf cake (easiest to pack!). Alcohol-tinged is fine, but nothing with dried fruits (traditional fruit cake is out). And nothing that needs frosting….

Thank you to anyone with ideas!

    1. My grandfather used to make us pound cake to take back to school. He’d freeze it (wrapped in layers of wax paper, foil, and a freezer bag) and we would take it straight from the freezer to our luggage. After defrosting completely at room temperature, it was as good or better than freshly made (freezing helps to seal moisture into cakes). You could do the same for any loaf cake. Freeze when slightly warm then package and mail while still frozen. You could even wrap it it gel freezer packs to extend the frozen time and mail priority so it arrives in a few days.

  19. I just ordered 2 ponte dresses from Land’s End. Darn you, friends and family sale! Also, Gap is having a sale on fall items in case anyone wants to join me in busting the ole clothing budget.

    1. Lands End will apply the discount after the fact if you call them within a few days (maybe up to a week?) of ordering. At least, they have for me when I’ve received coupon discount offers.

  20. I screwed something up at work majorly. I think I’m about to be fired. Any last minute tips for handling that conversation well? I’d like to be apologetic, grateful for having had the opportunity, and professional, but I’m currently bawling my eyes out and just threw up my breakfast, so I’m not sure I’ll be able to pull it off.

    1. I know it’s hard, but try to get the emotions under control. You don’t *know* you’re fired until you’re, well, fired, so don’t assume that’s where this is going, no matter how bad the screw-up (I had a co-worker who blew a serious filing deadline once, and she was severely reprimanded, but not fired – if this is your first major error, you may not be out the door just yet).

The best way to handle this is to: (1) Identify what went wrong – “I missed the filing deadline because I assumed the federal rules operated the same way as the local rules and excluded business days from the count, and it turns out my assumption was incorrect.” (2) Explain what you should have done differently – “I should have checked the applicable rules before calendaring the response for next week instead of yesterday.” (3) Apologize. (4) Reassure them that, if given the chance to stay on, this will never happen again.

Being able to identify what went wrong, why, and how to fix it will help you to look more professional, I think, then just flinging yourself on their mercy (although I’d be inclined towards flinging myself on their mercy myself, so I completely understand the impulse).

Deep breaths – you’ll be okay! Good luck and hang in there.

      1. Nothing to add to what KKH said. Owning up to and apologizing for your mistake, identifying what you learned, and would do differently to prevent this from happening again is the only way to handle this.

    2. Oh, dear. I’m sorry to hear this. I hope the worst doesn’t happen. When you have the conversation, apologize clearly, take responsibility for your mistake and say you’d like the opportunity to fix it (have a specific plan if possible) or to demonstrate that it was an aberration and won’t happen again (again, if you can be specific as to how you will ensure this, do). Try your best not to be either too defensive (it doesn’t sound like you are) or too apologetic (in the sense of begging for forgiveness).

For tips on not breaking down: Find an object to look at. Focus on it (but blink!). Try to exhale as much as possible…breathing out helps to stop the crying. Literally just blowout softly and steadily until you have to inhale. Try to regulate the volume of your voice when you talk. I’ve found that if you speak at a low volume (just above a whisper), you can fight off the cry voice better and it sounds like you are calmer than you feel.

      I hope it works out.

    3. Could you be overreacting? Like the error is not as bad as you feel it is? I’m thinking of you and hope it ends up being okay.

    4. Thank you ladies. No idea what will happen next, but reading these replies gave me a boost.

      1. There is some good advice in this thread. I hope you get the opportunity to take responsibility and make it right. Thinking of you. Keep us posted.

  21. I have been drooling over pictures of Lake Moraine and Lake Louise on my Instagram feed. Anyone been to these locales that could recommend places to stay, best time of year to go, and other general tips???

    1. You should definitely go! We went in mid September, and it was gorgeous and probably not as crowded as it is in the middle of the summer. We stayed at Moraine Lake in the lodge that is right on the lake. It was expensive (way more than we usually pay for a hotel), but I thought it was worth it. We did some hiking and canoeing near Moraine lake (canoeing and guided hikes are included if you stay at the lodge). We also went over to Lake Louise to hike and to eat at the Fiarmont hotel there, and while it was definitely worth the visit, I am glad that we stayed in the much smaller lodge on Moraine lake.

We also drove up to Jasper, which I would highly recommend. There is a ton to see between Lake Louise and Jasper, and we saw way more wildlife in Jasper than we did in Banff/Lake Louise. In mid-September when we went, the elk were rutting, which was quite a sight to see (but you do need to be careful around them–many people have been injured or had their cars badly damaged).

We spent also spent one night in the town of Banff and went to the hot springs there. Banff is a picturesque town, but I would skip it if I had to plan the trip again. We mostly stopped there to break up the drive from Jasper back to Calgary.

    2. You should definitely go! Banff is my neck of the woods and is absolutely beautiful, as is Jasper. September would be a good month to go, but be prepared for anything weather wise, although chilly/cold nights would be a given (especially if you are from somewhere warm). Come prepared to enjoy the outdoors. There’s a wonderful fairly easy hike not far from Lake Louise – Johnston’s Canyon. Lower falls, upper falls, and if you want something a little longer & more challenging, the Ink Pots (6 miles round trip but easy enough that my youngest did this hike about 2 years ago when he was almost 6). Another beautiful park in Alberta is Waterton Lakes National Park. I grew up 30 minutes away, and we saw SO MANY bears there when we camped this past summer – it was really cool.

  22. I’m feeling completely demoralized. I have a job I don’t like. I took it after being unemployed almost a year, even though my gut was screaming at me not to. I’ve been looking for a new job since around March. I had one very promising lead that resulted in multiple rounds of interviews but ultimately, I wound up as the runner up and someone else got the job. Since then, I’ve had only two interviews, both gotten through extensive networking and string-pulling. I have great credentials. My graduate degree is from one of the very top programs in the country and, except for the current job, the other two jobs I’ve had since graduation have been the kind that people dream of. I’ve been published and I’ve been asked to speak on panels. I’ve had people at all levels in my industry go over and critique my resume and other application materials, including friends currently working at my target employers. I’ve been told, unsolicited, that I interview extremely well and present well. I attend alumni events and industry events, and keep in close touch with my friends in the field (all of whom know I’m looking).

Even with all this, it feels like I just throw resume after resume into dark holes. I’ve had friends shepherd my resume through HR, but still don’t get any results. I know I’m qualified for the jobs. But I’ve heard that employers are getting at least 800 and often more like 1,500 applications for each of these openings. How on earth will I ever get a new job with those odds? In the past, when I’ve felt down, my solution has been to be proactive — apply to another job, email more contacts, attend another event. But I’m tired. I’m just so tired. I’ve been job-hunting essentially for three years and the only thing I could get was this cr@ppy job I’m in now, that is below my skill level and not even in my field. I’ve never felt like a victim of my circumstances before. I’ve always been one to make a path to wherever it was I wanted to go. But I feel like I’m just working and working at something that’s going nowhere. I don’t feel like any of the work I’ve put into job-hunting has actually gotten me anywhere. The recession hit my industry fairly hard, but it’s bounced back somewhat. I just feel like other people are getting jobs, but it’s like I’m invisible.

    1. I’m so sorry you’re in this situation. It’s a tough situation, a lot of people are in a similar place now, but job postings are up and something will hopefully click soon.
You’re doing all the right things. Someone said this earlier this week and I’ll repeat it – job hunting is not an incremental game. It doesn’t work…. until it does. You won’t see progress like a “page loading..100%” message. As long as you are putting out the word, networking, getting feedback and even occasionally getting interviews, it means you’re making progress.
Keep going. Keep your chin up. It will happen for you!
In the meantime if you want to post more information about your field, someone here may be able to give you concrete suggestions.

    2. No additional advice, but lots of moral support. You are not alone in feeling stuck. I’m there, also, and so are lots of other hard-working people with solid educations and experience. Try to find ways to nurture yourself through this horrible time, and to be grateful for whatever good is in your life, personally and professionally (even if your current job s*cks, and you feel your future hopes & dreams draining away like sand in an hour glass). This is not to encourage being unrealisticially cheerful! Rather, by some quirk of human psychology, feeling gratitude and being involved in positive activities (even if they aren’t immediately job-related) both help diminish the feeling of being absolutely and hopelessly stuck.

    3. I’m so sorry for what you’re going through. I would feel crushed too. Remember that work is work, and there is something noble about work even if you are working at what you consider to be a dead-end job. Look for the positive. Write it down and notice, notice, notice every little good thing. Don’t let them slip you by. The guy on the subway said goodmorning? Nice. You slept in a warm bed? Good. Your friend emailed you a funny video? Good. Food to eat? Good. You had the chance to be an educated, smart woman? Good. Also, try to let go of some of the shame you are feeling. This isn’t forever. You aren’t a failure. This is just a little detour on your path, it isn’t the be all end all of who you are.

  23. Random question: Is there any benefit (aesthetically or otherwise) to having a split on the back of a skirt instead of a vent? A vent being an opening where one piece of fabric overlaps another and a split being where there is no overlap and the fabric just isn’t sewn into the back seam.

I was curious because all of the mid-range skirts I have feature vents, but the one St. John skirt I have just has a split in the back. I’m pro-vent since it not surprisingly took 1 wear for me to rip the split in the skirt. Not sure if there’s a reason they did the split though that I’m missing?

    1. A split is much easier to sew. I always think of skirts that have a slit instead of a proper vent as being lower quality and the manufacturer was taking shortcuts, which doesn’t seem to match what I’ve heard about St John.

A split/slit also shows more skin than a vent – maybe that’s what they were going for?

    2. I err on the side of modesty and go for vent, or preferably a walking pleat in the back. I strongly prefer skirts because they distinguish me as female, and pencil skirts because they read far more professional to me than any other cut. But I have no want to be flirtatious in any regard. So I opt to cover up. Not matronly, mind you, but definitely conservative.

  24. TJ – I was planning to have my makeup done for my sister’s wedding, and now that is not possible. I am okay with doing it myself, but would like some help with finding a fuller-coverage foundation, some kind of staying power to make my makeup last 10+ hours, and some ideas about adding more color to my daily routine to feel like I’m wearing a “dressed up” version of makeup. I don’t know what kind/colors eye makeup would be appropriate for a afternoon wedding in the Colorado mountains (on a farm). I want to look like me, but with more color saturation, if that makes sense. So I am planning to go to either Nordstrom for a beauty consult (I think I have heard I can make an appointment) or Sephora. I kind of trust Nordstrom more, but think Sephora might be more budget friendly. I anticipate buying things like primer and brow pencil that I won’t use on a daily basis. Does anyone have any recommendations? Or websites that make you think I could do it myself?

    1. The Smashbox primer from Sephora is great. It has a weird feel, but it really makes makeup last. I would also suggest shadow primer for staying power.

      1. Smashbox was just what I was going to suggest. It really helps makeup last, and also provides a smoother finish for photos.

      2. Also agree with Smashbox primer, and I also use the Urban Decay Up All Nighter setting spray.

    2. +1 on the Sm@shbox. If you go to N0rdstrom, I would recommend B0bbi Br0wn — I’ve found that the artists are respectful of what I’m looking for and don’t try to push any unnecessary products. I would splurge on a few products (primer, foundation, maybe your eye makeup and a lipstick) and go to the drugstore for things like mascara, brow pencil, etc. M@keup Alley can help you determine the best drugstore brand for these products.

    3. I had to do my own make up for a wedding and went to Sephora for help. They suggested Makeup Forever HD powder, which was great. I also got a Tarte matte lip stain in a pretty color for my skin tone. I got some semi-waterproof mascara (I normally do not like waterproof). I also got a Stila cream blush.

Besides that, they did not oversell me! They told me a lot of what I already had would be great for the wedding and told me to use my usual concealer, bronzer, blush, and eyeliner, and then just apply the powder and cream blush over it.

      Also +1 for primer.

      1. Makeup Forever HD foundation is expensive, but looks FANTASTIC in pictures and is longwear. It also has about a million shades. Urban Decay has two different setting sprays, both of which have worked really well for me.

        1. +1 to MUFE HD powder and foundation. I wore both in a friend’s august wedding last year (in the South!), along with primer (I think smash box). My makeup was applied around 10am and still looked great when the afterparty ended around 2. It also looks great in the pictures: natural and no weird undertones. I purchased it at sephora (pro makeup, but we had to provide foundation) and there was absolutely no upsell pressure.

    4. Maskcara.com has a bunch of eye makeup tutorials with aaalllll kinds of options. You can find step-by-step directions and video tutorials for hundreds of looks there.

  25. Shopping Query: The local TJ Maxx has a bunch of Ugg Lynnea IIs on sale of $130. I love them. I’ve always loved wooden heels, so that’s part of it, but they’re just so comfy and cute. BUT the only ones available in my size are a kind of tan suede that I’m not in love with. Still, so cute and comfy!

I can afford it, but $130 is a lot for me to spend on any one clothing item (which is why I don’t really own nice boots), and I’ve never had a pair of Uggs before, so I don’t know where I’d wear them. I think the best way to describe my office would be as fashionable business casual, but I’m not oriented enough in the world of boots to know where these fall on that spectrum.

So, to buy or not to buy? They’ll probably be gone by the end of today, so I’ll have to get them today if I’m going to get them at all.

    1. I bought those on a whim a couple years ago and ended up re-selling them on ebay at a loss. They were just too clunky looking for my liking, and heavy. If it was just the heaviness I would have kept them, but I just didn’t feel like they were feminine enough for me.

    2. For me personally these are not polished enough for work or cute enough for going out, so they would be relegated as comfy errand shoes and I wouldn’t want to spend that much on shoes for that purpose.

  26. WOOO! Happy Friday! Something about Fridays and Fall weather makes me giddy. Ladies–I just booked a trip to Vegas with hubs and SIL–what should we do while there (other than the strip)? We’re foodies, history nerds, and enjoy the outdoors.

    1. If you are foodies, get thee to the blog, “Eating Las Vegas”. He does great restaurant reviews and I’ve learned to trust his judgment.

I really enjoyed visiting the Hoover Dam. The scenery is gorgeous and the history and architecture of the dam are really interesting.

Also, as a history nerd, I strongly recommend the Titanic exhibition at the Luxor. Absolutely fascinating and worth the exorbitant ticket price (though you can get discounted tickets).

  27. How do you handle a job application where they ask for salary history? Salary expectations is one thing, but salary history? Complicating this is it’s for a job in a different, much cheaper cost of living state, so salary expectations may be wildly different. It’s also an online form, so I may have to put something in the box to get it to go through.

    1. One of the articles Kat posted on the Weekly News Update addresses responding to salary questions. Maybe that can help?

  28. Sorry for the pity party TJ. Earlier this week a partner called me by the wrong name in a meeting and had to be corrected. This morning he came to my office to ask if I had been involved on a particular project. I had worked around the clock on this project all week and billed 60+ hours on it over 3.5 days. I know I just need to get over it — he’s not very engaged in work right now and wasn’t directly involved in the project so wouldn’t know how much time I spent on it, but I’m still annoyed by our interactions this week. Any advice on how to build a better relationship with this guy? My first instinct is forget him, I don’t work this hard to be a nameless, faceless cog in your wheel, but obviously that’s a bit immature!

    1. What year are you? If you’re new or new to working with him, cut him some slack. Sometimes it’s okay to be a nameless, faceless cog in the wheel (that’s what the money’s for).

That said, you have something to talk about with him now, so use it as an opportunity to get some face time. When this project is over (or not as intense), maybe ask him to coffee. If you only worked on a part of the project, ask how it fit in with the bigger picture he was managing or otherwise show interest in the project/his work/etc.

      1. I’m still junior and relatively new to the firm. Thanks for your advice, I think that’s exactly what I will do.

  29. Threadjack:
Idk if any of you like Ann Taylor on facebook. I’m assuming a bunch of you do. I can’t get over the awful clothing advice they’re giving! They’re advising women to wear a “multitasking mini” for their career in finance: http://blog.anntaylor.com/posts/what-to-wear-to-an-interview-for-a-financial-career/?utm_source=Facebook&utm_medium=Social+Advertising&utm_content=IF_Interview_For_Financial_09_10_13_grad&utm_campaign=At+Blog+Promo the length on that skirt might be ok but dont call it a mini.

Even worse, they’re telling people to wear a color block sheath dress to a in interview “for a legal career”. WHAT? NO.

    1. ” As an attorney, you want to be taken seriously. ” Right, Ann Taylor, which is why you WEAR A SUIT.

    2. That is definitely not the right outfit for an interview but I do like that skirt. Reminds me of a tie. And the length will probably be fine for women who are not as tall as most models.

  30. I am planning a big move from one big city to another halfway across US, with a newborn in tow. I have to move in a few weeks and am wondering if any of you super organized ladies have any project plans, to-do checklists or other tools that can help me make this move without losing my sanity? Thanks so much!
