I tend to prefer claw clips, but if I was looking for a new barrette, this pretty one from Lele Sadoughi would be at the top of my list.
I like the arrangement of the stones — having five opposed to three feels a lot more luxe.
The barrette is $75, at Nordstrom.

This is pretty. My hair is thin/fine and I have a feeling that I don’t have enough hair to hold it up and that its weight would pull it down / off. I’ve always loved nice hair accessories though. If only I had good hair.
Same. I used to have hair that was too thick and now it’s too thin thanks to perimenopause + covid + major surgery. Bleh.
Anyone familiar with Hawaii and have a sense of whether we should be planning on canceling an early October trip to Kauai given the hurricane there? The initial reports I saw were pretty bad and I obviously don’t want to be in the way, but I don’t have a sense of what the likely recovery timeline is. Everything is fully refundable.
I would probably cancel. Kauai has basically one road around the island and I understand that it’s pretty damaged. The state will likely try to reduce the tourism impact and get fixes underway ASAP but early October is really close.
Yes, I would cancel.
If you have the option to change your itinerary, I recommend considering it. We are on our way back from the Big Island. We loved our time on the Kona Coast. We were fine that we happened to change our itinerary from Kauai to go to the Big Island just before the hurricane hit.

Does anyone here use Fidelity beyond the minimum interactions like if you have a 401K?
i use it for my HSA, but yeah, pretty minimal interactions.
Sure, we have a dozen or so varying accounts with Fidelity.
We have several investment accounts there between the two of us, including 401ks, Roth IRAs, and old HSA, employee stock ESPP and RSUs.
Are you asking about advisor or private client services? We don’t use those bc we’re comfortable managing on our own and the tools are great, but we’re contacted about them frequently.
I like keeping money in more than one place to spread risk, so we’ve got some funds elsewhere, but Fidelity holds the bulk of our investments.
What do people think of Sydney Sweeney’s sports ad?
She needs to go away. I’m sure it will happen soon enough given who she has associated with.
Very disheartening and not inspiring in the least. She’s allowed to do whatever she wants and we’re allowed to criticize it.
I didn’t view it as an indictment of women in sports (though I am loving all the pro-women athletes content it’s spawned), but rather as a teen boy’s wet dream. She’s not going to age well.
Normally a fan of hers and I think it was in poor taste.
Brandi Chastain’s infamous 1999 photo was at least related to the sport she plays.
Sweeney’s photoshoot was just weird.
This is very on brand for her. I’m not sure how you can be a fan and not realize that?
I bet you think you’re helping the anti-Sweeney crowd.
To be honest, I don’t see why people are saying it’s setting women back, or making life harder for women in sports? She is affecting her own image and brand, absolutely, but no one is looking at Simone Biles any differently because of Sydney Sweeney revealing herself. I don’t see how one woman degrading herself degrades all other women as well. But it speaks to how fed up with the current cultural climate people are and that she may represent that.
Gross, but it also probably does attract the type of person who would be interested in sports betting. The whole industry is garbage and the commercial is the gross cherry on top.
Any publicity is “good” publicity … I can’t even be bothered to see what this is about be a why engage with advertising?
Semi related to this post and it might have been a podcast or an article that was about how actors like Sydney who don’t come from wealthy parents in her co-hort like Judd Apatow’s daughters have to do so many more advertisements to have the money to support all the people they need to exist in Hollywood (stylist, clothes, etc.) and then deal with all the backlash. The the ones that come from wealth don’t have do any of that and can also keep their life private because they don’t need to self promote since their name is well known already.
I played D1 sports in college. Many of my friends are Olympians. When i think of promoting women in sports, it’s usually not scantily clad/faux uniformed women showing underboob.
But, it’s on brand for her. I’ll let the trash take itself out. She already showed her true colors with her jeans ad, which was not even a little bit not a huge racist dog whistle.
do you think it’s already too late to stop AI?
Yes.
Not sure but I’m worried. I also hate that the bros who rushed to get rich off of AI are only now expressing their worries (after their own personal payouts).
I’d be thrilled with a Dune-style ban on thinking machines. In reality I don’t think we’ll get the genie all the way back in the bottle. Maybe we’ll see regulation about permitted usage with sensitive data (medical records, financial and ID info). But I’m not sure how to stop security and hacking risks without shutting down certain capabilities altogether. The tech oligarchy has gotten too powerful to accept those limitations.
I think that the inevitable AI crash will temper things significantly, but it’s not going to go away. It’s not a sustainable business model and I don’t think it ever will be.
I agree with this. It’s an incredibly advanced chatbot, but that’s all it will ever be; the underlying architecture cannot lead to thinking.
I just don’t understand this line of argument, and I guess I’d be interested if you’re willing to elaborate (because I hear it often and I’d like to understand better)
Does it matter if it’s “thinking” or not, if it can do the kinds of things that have the same outcome as a strategic, thought-out plan would do? Am thinking of examples the hugging face hack – I don’t think it has “intent” in the moral or philosophical sense, but the outcome can still cause real-world harm (especially if AI companies are going to continue testing models in un air gapped sandboxes. But truth be told, even an air gapped box isn’t a failsafe: any test environment has at least some form of input and output (someone is looking at the testing results), and unless that air gapped box is also leadlined, anything made out of wires has a functional wifi antenna anyway
Depends on what you mean by “stop”. And also what you mean by “AI”, I guess.
Is it too late, technologically, to stop development of super intelligent AGI? Absolutely not. Whether we have the political capacity and will to do so is a different question.
No. Security vulnerabilities and technical debt mean that tech infrastructure is a house of cards anyway.
Maybe a better question is if it’s already too late to stop oligarchs.
Of course. Skynet has been in charge since 1997.
I need to pick up a couple of pairs of work pants this fall, for a business casual office. I like wide legs, but I feel like I’m not seeing them so much – are they on their way out (or already) out? What styles should I be looking for or avoiding? And please don’t @ me – I’m not replacing my entire wardrobe, just keeping in mind what is and isn’t current when buying some pieces I need.
I feel like wide legs are still very current, and are my preference. Go for it!
I am seeing nothing but wide-legged pants.
My take is that wide legs are still current, but aren’t “leading trend” like they have been, and that the people who want to be on the leading edge of trends are hunting fresh looks. Meanwhile, the middle of the trend pack is wearing wide-leg pants, and the very back of the trend pack has now seen them on enough people for long enough that they’re trying them or considering trying them.
I think straight or wide leg pants are fine for work trousers (unless you’re a trendy dresser)—the more current shapes that I see seem to be in casual pants or jeans (barrel legs, balloon, etc.).
If you’re 5’7 or taller sezane has some beautiful pants.
I’m seeing mostly wide-leg and straight-leg pants, some barrel-legs (but I’m not particularly trendy nor do I live in a trendy place).
I see a TON of brown, olive, and deep red-brown – which is a bummer because my capsule colors are black and gray.
No one cares IRL but I was today years old when I realized that two of Henry VIII’s wives were cousins (Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard) and another was a second cousin to both of them (Jane Seymour). IDK if they knew each other IRL except that Jane was on Anne’s staff. And Anne inherited Henry after her sister Mary. So a hypothetical family Thanksgiving could be interesting. Fish off a new pier, Henry!
Henry VIII and all his wives were all related by descent from Edward I!
Including Catherine of Aragon, who descended via John of Gaunt. They say that everyone of English descent comes from Edward I. Everyone of European descent comes from Charlemagne.
And Catherine of Aragon was originally married to Henry VIII’s older brother!
