I think this blazer is absolutely stellar as a statement piece in the office or beyond. The colors just look absolutely fabulous, and the print — while definitely on the larger side — is a ton of fun.
Curiously, in addition to the blazer styled with matching pants, they show it worn with a black bikini and a half-unzipped denim skirt while a model yawns at a table. I'm not sure a satin blazer would be my go-to choice for vacation lounging, but hey, you do you!
For my $.02, I'd wear it with white pants and a white tank, or with navy pants, or with a fun contrasting colored sheath dress like something in orange or lavender.
The blazer is $139, and available in sizes XXS-XL, at Mango. (They also have matching shorts, pants, and a cropped scarf top.)
(I am decidedly NOT a floral person, but Mango has a bunch of floral prints I'm loving right now…)

I am a first time homeowner and am starting to discover the joys associated with this luxury. I need to buy a new garbage disposal. How do I begin to figure out which brand to buy and from whom to buy it? Is this the kind of thing where you buy whatever Home Depot sells or do you go to some higher-end place? I’m more interesed in quality and longevity than cost.
anon
I called my plumber and he bought and installed it. I didn’t have to pick anything out.
Anon
Do you want a garbage disposal? Just because there’s one there now doesn’t mean you need to replace it with another if you don’t want one. You can always hook up a piece of straight pipe if you don’t.
Apologies if you already know this – hard to tell if you were being sarcastic or not re: “joys” of homeownership.
I’ve never had a garbage disposal and have never found myself wishing I had one, because it would just be one more thing to install, use electricity or break.
Anon
Counterpoint: get a garbage disposal unless you enjoy clogged drains or scraping every last crumb into the garbage after every meal for the rest of your life. The only people who don’t think you need a garbage disposal are the ones who’ve never had one.
Anon
I’ve had one, and now I don’t.
You just have a catch filter in the drain and dump it after doing the dishes. Not so hard. I don’t feel like I need one anymore. In fact, I realize it is probably better for the pipes/water flow to throw away the waste, or even better – compost it.
Anon
Way better for your local water system to not let stuff like that down the drain in the first place. And, like you said, not at all difficult.
Anon
I’ve never had a clogged kitchen drain and I’m not fastidious about scraping, either. I also live in an old, not fancy house. Not sure what the difference is, but I’ve never needed or wanted a garbage disposal.
Anon2
Yep I’m on septic now and mourn my garbage disposal daily. We compost almost all of our scraps but some sneaks into the sink and it makes me gag to pull wet concealed crumb slop out of the drain. It seems the jury is out on if you can dispose *a little bit* on septic, so I’m leaning towards getting one just for those gross crumbs.
anonshmanon
eh, idk. The rest of the world seems fine without garbage disposals, and they don’t have constantly clogged pipes.
anonshmanon
ack, duplicate comment after my first one got nested in the wrong place. Sorry!
Anon
That’s one opinion but it is not universal. I’ve had disposals in the past and while I wouldn’t immediately rip it out if my next house came with one, I would not consider its existence to be a benefit. They clog, leak, smell, destroy stuff that goes down them inadvertently, are noisy, and fail at inopportune times. Last time I had one, I unplugged it until we moved because I didn’t want to deal with it. Don’t miss having one, not in the slightest.
anonshmanon
idk, nobody in the rest of the world has garbage disposals, and they don’t have constantly clogged pipes, so…
Hellooooooooo
Hi, 3 houses in, suggest Home Depot/Lowe’s. There are only really a couple brands out there it seems. If you won’t be installing and will be hiring an installer, ask them to make a recommendation and purchase. Plus they may also have to see if they need pipe extensions (don’t know technical terms) to make it fit your sink/pipe height.
Nesprin
Home depot has a surprisingly good return policy as long as you save their receipts. We do a ton of DIY stuff and we buy from Costco, home depot and the local lumber yard in that order.
Hellooooooooo
Ah, forgot to also say my brother’s a plumber and he said it’s not much difference between the brands, just horsepower depending on how often you use and with what types of food waste. Personally We try not to put anything much/hard in there, just little bits of leftover food sometimes. Also he said it’s inevitable your sink cup bottom piece (again I am not plumbing savvy here) will rust out over 10 years or so and need replacement. Life of disposal varies but not meant to last long. Last one replaced was about 10 yrs old.
Anonymous
Hellooooooooo is right. We just had ours replaced after 11 years since the bottom rusted out. We got a stainless steel InSinkErator which is more powerful and quieter than our old one on the recommendation of the contractor who installed it. Since it was larger, they had to extend the pipe.
Hellooooooooo
Apologies complete reading fail, I read your inquiry as sink food disposal- not garbage disposal. Haven’t had one of those. Is that a trash compactor thing?
Anonymous
They are the same thing.
Senior Attorney
No you’re thinking of the same thing. I call the thing in the sink a garbage disposal.
Sunshine
Thank you for all of the responses. I call the sink food disposal the garbage disposal; I don’t know if there is another name. We don’t actually put food down the sink, but inevitably a few pieces of food end up going down the sink from tiny scraps on plates and we need the disposal to clear out those pieces.
Looks like Home Depot/Lowes are the way to go. From my research, it apppears the 3/4 hp with stainless steel grinding parts will give me the best chance at a long life.
Everything Else Besides The Sink
If you don’t already have one, you might consider buying a home warranty going forward. The best thing about them is that the warranty company has connections to all the local tradespeople. In our experience, the pool guy they send you is the pool guy who knows all about your motor because he’s been in the business for a gajillion years. Ditto the plumber, the electrician, the appliance guy, etc. The prices are also good, but the fact that they find the right tradesperson is golden.
Anonymous
Oh, gosh. This is not the typical experience of people with home warranties.
Everything Else Besides The Sink
Is as wondering about that because it has been so good and that just seemed unexpected and strange for this cynic.
Anonymous
Yeah, that was not at all our experience with the home warranty that came with our house. The HVAC vendor they sent was a total rube who installed the new unit all wrong and we had to have someone else come and get it up to code. And the warranty only paid for like $800 of the new unit.
Nesprin
I absolutely hated the home warranty my realtor bought us for the first year- it took 2 hours on hold to get to a customer service rep who didn’t know furnace from water heater, the pros they sent us were randos off craigslist, and their interpretation of their exclusion list was comically aggressive.
Anon
Agree. I never found anything they would actually cover. Complete waste of money.
Jules
I had decent experiences with my home warranty from Old Dominion (I think is the name). The contractor they sent for a water heater issue was was decent, and a really good guy to work with, and I was allowed to request him for the next problem. In the first five years of owning my house, the warranty paid to fully replace my air conditioning system, furnace and hot water heater, with modest deductibles; it was totally worth it.
Nudibranch
Not my experience either.
Anonymous
I usually consult Consumer Reports and/or the Wirecutter, but lately I have not been as happy with either one’s recommendations. I have installed two garbage disposals myself with some assistance from my husband. It’s a two-person job to hold the heavy thing up while you connect it.
Anon
I am far from handy and I replaced my garbage disposal by myself during COVID. It is super easy. Turn off the water, unscrew the connections to the pipes, remove the old one, put in the new one, and reattach.

Cafe du Monde coffee and beignets are well known for a reason. There’s also a place with, I think, Market in the name that is famous for muffulettas.
If you like drinks, Beachbum Berry Latitude 29 is a rather famous tiki drinks place and I can vouch for the drinks being very tasty.
Anon
Agree with cafe du monde. Yes, it’s touristy. But also delicious. I’ve never had a beignet as good as theirs.
Anonymous
My friend whose daughter goes to Tulane loves Atchafalaya. The WWII museum is fantastic. Preservation Hall is kind of a tourist trap but it’s a great one. Beignets and cafe au lait are a must (my friend prefers Cafe Beignet; I am in the Cafe du Monde camp). You can find great free on-line self-guided walking tours of the French Quarter and the Garden District. I had a great dinner at Meril, and lunch at Mother’s is a fun tourist experience. The aquarium was underwhelming. I had the best espresso of my life at Spitfire Coffee. Faulkner House books is nearby.
Anonymous
I love Arnaud’s French 75 bar for cozy atmosphere.
Anon
+1 and ride the St Charles streetcar during the day to see the houses.

Oh yeah, and there’s a pharmacy museum that’s pretty cool! Nearby, a house where Napoleon stayed at some point (??) has good Pimm’s cups.
Marie
The Napoleon House, on the corner of Chartres and St. Louis streets. Love that place!
Anon
The restaurant’s site says it was offered to the former emperor for his exile but he obviously never made it. His younger brother Jerome lived in Baltimore at one point.
Anon
+1 on Cafe du Monde. Cliche, but popular for a reason. One of the best brunch meals I’ve ever had was the fried green tomatoes eggs benedict at Cafe Fleur de Lis.
Anon
I think it depends a lot on which days you are in town and where you are staying. Here are some recs, most are downtown, assuming your convention is in that area:
– Riverboat cruise on the Steamboat Natchez – this never gets old to me. Its such a fun and different view of the city, and the river is a vital part of the city, so it’s fun to get up close and personal.
– Cafe du Monde and Jackson Square – classic tourist activities for a reason
– Dueling piano bar at Pat O’s in the French Quarter – particularly fun if you’re ducking in on a weekend to get out of a surprise rainstorm.
– Miss River and/or Chandelier Bar – Donald Link restaurant and a bar at the new Four Seasons Hotel downtown. Food is good and the bar is fancy! Also can check out their rooftop viewing deck called Vue.
– Peche – seafood restaurant in Warehouse District (close to CBD/convention center)
– Meril – Emeril’s restaurant downtown
– Mr. B’s (or pretty much any Brennan’s restaurant) in the French Quarter
– Carousel Bar at the Hotel Monteleone in the French Quarter
– NOPSI hotel bar in the CBD
-Antoine’s in the French Quarter
– Definitely recommend a ride on the streetcar headed uptown (St. Charles Ave., the green ones)
If you want to venture out of the downtown/Quarter area:
– The Bower (uptown)
– Hotel St. Vincent bar (uptown)
– Elysian Barn (Marigny)
– second the rec above for Atchafalaya, particularly for brunch (uptown)
– Commander’s Palace (uptown)
– Rosedale (Mid-City)
– Jacques-Imo’s (uptown)
– Saba; Alon Shaya’s restaurant (uptown)
– New Orleans Museum of Art Sculpture Garden (Mid-City)
Anon
Also, it probably goes without saying, but please stay aware of your surroundings and exercise caution. There has been heavy crime lately, and there was a shooting outside of my office in the middle of a workday last week (work in the CBD at the edge of the Quarter). Not saying that to scare you – I go out and do food/drinks regularly and work in the city every day, but I find tourists sometimes are less aware of their surroundings in NOLA for some reason.
ToS
While they crank on the AC – I’ve had fabulous ice cream and gelato in the French Quarter – Sweet Saint is my current favorite! There was an hand-crafted gelato place in the Before Times that I loved, but haven’t been able to see how that resolved.

Oh yes, it is perfect for your coloring.

Just curious, when other people fall asleep, do you have a story that you basically tell yourself in your head? I’ve always done this (different romance stories/fantasies, tbh), just curious how common it is.
Anonymous
Definitely not. I’ve never heard of this.
When I was going through a short period of depression decades ago, I would take myself off to a “happy place” in my head (a sailboat floating on the water) so I could (stop crying and) sleep, but that was a technique I used only for that acute issue and I really hadn’t thought of it in forever.
I see nothing wrong if you do, just chiming in for the poll.

When I have trouble falling asleep, I will sometimes imagine how I would have written better storylines on Downton Abbey.

The headspace app has “sleepcasts” where people tell you a really boring story in a calm voice. I love them, but my husband thinks they’re creepy so I only use them when he’s out of town.
Anon
Yes, I’ve always done this. It feels halfway between reading and dreaming to me so it’s very occurred to me it was psychologically worrisome.
Anon
Yes, I have a whole urban fantasy/paranormal romance book series I’m plotting it in my head while in bed at night.
Anonymous
Oh, good, I thought I was the only one! Not romance, though. Stories about falling asleep.
AnoNL
Big fxx YES! :)
anon
Oh I 100% do this. It’s one of my favorite parts of going to bed :)
Anon
No, never. But I have trouble with waking up in the middle the of the night and not being able to fall back asleep. When that happens, I try to keep thinking about my dream or whatever book I’m reading rather than starting to think about something in real life that will keep me awake worrying about it for hours, which I think is actually the same kind of idea of distracting yourself to sleep. If it doesn’t work, I usually just read an actual book on my iPad.
anon
When I was younger I did, but now I mostly just have anxiety before bed :(
Anonymous
Yes, and I’m afraid of general anesthesia or sedation because I worry I would talk aloud about my sleep story while coming out of it.
Anon
OMG I just had surgery for the first time ever and was actually more worried this would happen than I was about any actual medical complications!
My fears were unfounded and I made no startling or embarrassing statements while under nor while coming out. Whew!
Anon
I’ve had the same handful of audiobooks on rotation for falling asleep for years, so they hold zero surprise and it’s just a familiar voice telling a familiar story that keeps my brain from wandering, so I fall asleep in less than 3 minutes usually.
I’ve been waking up more often in the middle of the night, and reminiscing about nice things like a vacation or last time I hung out with my family helps me fall asleep usually.
Anon
No I think my dreams do that for me. But I usually fall asleep reading something or doing a puzzle so I don’t seem to need a falling asleep aid other than that
Anon
I do. I imagine and create stories for characters. Usually ones from tv shows or books. I imagine what if scenario’s, or create my own plot lines and conversations. Sometimes I get really wild and imagine if a character was on a podcast or an interview with other characters (I do this pretending to be on a podcast/interview when I take long walks too…either as myself or as a character).
Some nights I cycle through the same ‘scene’ trying to get it just right. Occasionally my brain can’t get into that mode, either because of anxiety or other intrusive thoughts.
Been doing it for as long as I can remember. I never had an imaginary friend growing up but it feels kinda similar…
Anon
Hahaha, yes. I was at a dinner party a couple of years ago where someone casually mentioned this as part of a larger story and half the guests totally understood/did the same thing and half the guests were astonished/never did it.
Cora
Yes absolutely. I always fall asleep before the story concludes so I only really remember how it starts (usually also a romance story) – but that shows it works!
So glad to hear others do this too

Does anyone have experience with them? I saw a house they host on VRBO. Through over a dozen chats with them on the VRBO app within the space of 14 hours, I never chatted with the same person twice. Half of the people told me the house was available on my dates. Half of the people told me that it was not. When I asked for direct communication with a human (in the hopes that I could learn what was going on, like, maybe there is a required minimum stay that I was not meeting), they ghosted me. Why would I spend a bunch of money to rent a vacation home from a company that behaves this way?

I thought I smelled something musty at home (old house) and left for a work trip and came back to 500 flies. I am guessing that something died in the walls and either the flies want it or the flies hatched out of it. What I can see of the crawlspace shows nothing obvious. I think it’s in between walls (or was — odor is now gone). I’m not prepared for non-highrise apartment living. What did I miss in a week? And if it happened once, what do I do next time? This is so gross.

Perhaps traps so rodents (if that’s what it was) don’t die in your walls. Avoid poisons because otherwise you’ll definitely have them dying in there.
Hope the flies are gone!

“A couple of people (was that really you Senior Attorney?) didn’t extend much grace during what was a distressing moment for the poster.”
For real, why do this? Why insert your snotty little bit of criticism here? It makes it seem like the whole comment is either A. transparent holier-than-thou virtue signaling – “look how kind I am, especially compared to those other people” or B. an attempt to stir the pot and revive a dead argument, or C. both.
Really, really do some self-examination and self-work and ask yourself why you felt the need to do this. Because it’s pathological, IMO and you’d be better off fixing whatever’s broken in your life, vs. doing something like this. FFS.

This and yesterday’s discussion needs to be kinder.

Threads turn into a pile-on when the OP continues responding but isn’t open to opposing viewpoints. Of course OP has a right to be sad about the dog and I’m sorry she’s in pain. But the comments showed that the situation wasn’t as black and white as OP insisted it was. Hopefully she took the differing perspectives to heart.
Dog OP
I was open to opposing viewpoints, but most of the aggressive comments ignored facts I included or said I was missing information and I wasn’t. The comments that were not aggressive, but included alternate motivations, were very helpful for me in considering why my brother may have done what he did, though I still strongly disagree with his choice. I will continue to be part of this community that I have enjoyed for a decade, but I don’t remember so many mean commenters in years past.
Anon
Because she was correct.
Not all choices in life are moral or to use modern parlance, “valid.” It’s okay to criticize a man for putting down his young dog instead of driving one hour for fluids and a full examination – like seriously people, it’s okay to say this is wrong. I think a lot of people are afraid of being judgmental or something but no, this is not okay, and not everything in life is covered by “you do you.”
This dog had not been diagnosed with any terminal illness, either before the incident or during, and examples like “I had a 16-year-old cat with stage IV cancer and it would’ve been cruel to prolong her pain” are not at all analogous. He was put down pre-diagnosis and before it could even be discovered whether costly surgery/medication was recommended. That is a horrific way to treat an animal (and it’s clear he knew it was wrong if he stayed uncharacteristically silent to a sister who would’ve helped and who was close to the dog – not all siblings are close, but when they are, suddenly going silent about something this big screams “guilty conscience”). The pile-on on OP was so gleefully vicious, it made me sick to read. How many long-time readers left in the last few weeks?
Anon
Ok original OP… Ok..
Anon
Nope, just another reader who believes people shouldn’t kill dogs like that. Is it so crazy to you that there would be two?
Anon
Definitely more than two! Not the OP and also think it’s pretty terrible to make that decision before even seeking a diagnosis or finding out what the treatment options are. If you disagree that’s fine, but it was no reason for people to be so mean yesterday!
Anon
I haven’t commented elsewhere on this thread and am not the OP, but count me as a third. It’s certainly possible there’s more to the story that we don’t know about, but based on the facts OP shared, it did not sound like a reasonable decision on the part of the brother to me. I’ve sadly had to put several dogs down and I fully understand that you shouldn’t prolong a pet’s life when it’s suffering just because you aren’t ready to say goodbye. But this did not sound compassionate to the dog at all, and I would struggle a lot if a family member did that to a pet I cared about.

Yep. Agree completely. That was so gross to read. I’d be disgusted at the families member, too. Was not a “you do you” thing at all.
Kindness first.
I agree that the pile-on was ‘gleefully vicious’, it made me feel awful and grotty.
It also made me want to be a positive light here to turn back the tone.

The issue is that a more complete diagnosis is often just stress and money to be told what you already know – the dog is dying.
I also don’t blame someone for putting down their dog on a Saturday while they are already at the vet’s, rather than drive all over creation and have the pup be in pain waiting for the vet to be open on Monday.
Logistics are a thing.

I think you can also say that about the opposing viewpoints though?
Not one person could consider that maybe their tone was unkind or that maybe the brother was in the wrong and OP was right to be upset?
Anon
Right?? You can disagree without being snarky and mean!
Dog OP
Thank you! I am late to seeing this but I was the OP. I have been giving my pup lots of love and we took her on a special adventure to a favorite walking trail. I also checked in with my brother after processing all of the comments and I am trying to be supportive despite not agreeing with his choice. Even though some commenters were harsh (especially Senior Attorney who I’ve always respected), the varied perspectives were helpful for processing some of my feelings. It’s a sad reminder of how short our time is with our pets.
Senior Attorney
OP, FWIW my husband is with you and was horrified that I disagreed with him. I’m sorry to have upset you further.

There’s no need to apologize, SA, to someone who can’t seem to regulate and cope with their own emotions over things that happen here – or in real life. I so wish about half the commenters here would try therapy – or Ativan. It would help them so, so much.
Anon
Apologizing when you behaved badly is a great thing to do, actually.
Kindness first.
Let’s try kindness first.
It’s gracious of Senior Attorney to apologise.
We all have rough days, let’s assume we are all doing our best.

Seriously? Having emotions is normal. This just happened. OP is processing. In part by posting on this board.
SA behaved graciously by apologizing. You are just stirring the pot. Therapy and Ativan for OP here is not my immediate response ….
Dog OP
Thanks SA. I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I didn’t expect that post to take off like it did; it seems people have very strong opinions on this topic.

Hey OP, I’m way late so unsure if you’ll see this but I’m 100% on your side and was horrified by some of the comments. I have my own dog + volunteer with a local rescue and know that sadly, there are absolutely vets who will agree to put down a dog that is nowhere near critical/unsaveable/etc. I would also be disgusted if a family member put down their pet without even trying to get a diagnosis or driving to an emergency vet. It’s one thing to decide, “no, we can’t spent $10,000 on a surgery for them” it’s very different than what you described!

Since we are doing this again: We only heard OP’s side of the story, and frankly she comes across as one of the same type of absolutist who always jump all over people here for rehoming dangerous dogs. There is more to the story here that we don’t know, and OP and other posters are insisting that there is no possible scenario in which the brother is not a monster and that additional info doesn’t matter. Life is just not that simple. It is very hard to imagine someone just putting down a beloved pet out of convenience, or any ethical vet just going along with it. The more likely scenario is that the vet presented the X-ray results as very dismal, and said “if you really don’t want to put him down immediately we could give him some fluids and you could try to find an emergency vet that’s open for a more thorough diagnosis, but he’s in a lot of pain and the end result will almost certainly be the same.” But we will never know because we weren’t there and neither was OP. I hope she is never faced with such a terrible decision, and that if she is her family is loving and supportive instead of judgmental.
Kindness first.
There was no mention of dangerous dogs.
She did not call her brother a monster. In fact she said she hid her feelings from her brother.
Try and be kind first. Dog OP is obviously trying.

It’s nearly impossible to imagine someone who carries pet insurance putting down a dog out of convenience. There are about 100 million pets in America and about 4 million of them are insured. OP’s brother already paid for one surgery (even with insurance, there are copays and such).
OP’s brother has already placed himself in the category of “cares a lot about his pet,” and it is weird to suggest he did this just cuz.
Interview
Is it insane to take a virtual job interview from my office? Context: lawyer looking to jump and have an interview next week. My home office internet is a bit unpredictable and I semi-regularly have my screen freeze during video calls. My office has a conference room floor including one that is kind of out of the way. The internet there is great. Can I hole myself up there for the interview? I think the chances of anyone hearing me are pretty close to zero. Or is the risk simply unacceptable / it is way too unethical? If I cannot use my office, I’m considering buying AirPods and using my iPhone for the interview (propped up so it isn’t immobile and at the same height my laptop would be), but I’m worried that will be obvious and seem unprofessional. Advice appreciated!
Anokha
I don’t think it’s unethical, but I do think it’s not prudent. Do you have your own office? that seems better than a conference room.
Anon
Only you can judge how likely it is that you’d be interrupted.
You could risk it, but is there a third option? Friend’s home or nearby rentable co-working space.
Anecdata
does your library have reservable conference/phone rooms?
on the home internet – is it good enough to do from home if you connect to the router with an Ethernet cable rather than over wifi?
another tech option – can your phone hotspot your computer for the call?
I don’t think it’s unethical to do from the office but I personally wouldn’t want the added stress on an interview about worrying about being overheard!
anon
I don’t think it’s smart, but you do you.
Anonymous
I’d be worried how it might be perceived by the interviewer. Can you snag someone’s private office for a “telehealth” appointment?
OP
Thanks, all! I have a private office but we have the modern “everything is glass” design, so the privacy is subpar, and the soundproofing is imperfect – someone could very well overhear a few things. Our conference room has good soundproofing and frosted glass, but it seems foolish to risk exposure as these comments confirm. My husband’s home computer has Ethernet connection but no camera so I’m going to borrow a camera / mic set up and see if that works.
Cat
I’d buy the AirPods (tbh, Pro is worth the extra for the cushy earbud and noise cancelling; wear only one of them to avoid talking too loud) and prop up your phone. The undercurrent of ‘was that a noise, is someone going to find me’ is not stress I’d want to add to an interview, and I do not think anyone would care much less notice that you are on iPhone video vs. laptop video.
Anon
It’s really inappropriate and probably also unethical to use your work resources to interview for another job
Anon
I’d buy the AirPods, I hate talking to people using their computer speakers, it’s always bad sound quality. I’d also take option C and rent a coworking space for the day or go to a friend’s with better internet (and frankly, I’d get yours fixed if you work at home with any frequency).
Anon
I wouldn’t think twice about using my iphone for a video interview.
