For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional.
I always like a classic navy suit, and I love the little details on this one — the crosshatching on the fabric, the slight puff to the sleeves, the modern take on the cropped, bootcut pants.
The big patch pockets look nice and functional, and (huzzah!) everything is on sale at both Nordstrom and Rebecca Taylor.
The jacket is $315, the pants are $195, and the dress (which is lovely but is long-sleeved, so it may be hard to layer under the blazer) is $285; all of the pieces were originally $325-$525.
Looking for a navy suit in plus sizes? I only just found this amazing navy skirt suit, but we may have to feature it next week because it's gawrgeous. On the more affordable side of things, this pretty navy knit blazer and pants combo is available in regular and petites up to size 18.

so so pretty
Never too many shoes...
Right? The dress is gorgeous.

Are you guys seeing something different than me? It’s a pant suit, and not one I find particularly attractive.
Anon
Agree, kind of looks like you rubbed yourself 80% dry white paint.

There is a link to a dress in the same fabric/pattern.
Anon
But the fabric is so ugly…? It’s not the cut of the suit that bothers me.
Housecounsel
I love the dress!

The fabric reminds me of linoleum.
UHU
Yes! I love that lino look. Gorgeous pick. Would love to see how it looked on various body types though, e.g., someone short/petite torso.
Also, that plus size, wow! Christian Siriano is doing some fabulous work!
Never too many shoes...
Wow, that is stunning…can I justify $2400 US for a suit?

I’ve been an admirer of his since he did Michelle Obama’s fabulous blue DNC dress in 2016. Alas, I’ve neither the budget nor place to wear any of his creations.

I’m digging it and am totally in the market for a “fun” but still lawyerish suit, I think I’m pulling the trigger

Well, that “wish to the universe” a week or so ago didn’t come true unfortunately and my nausea and br3st tenderness was not pregnancy but peri0d. Sigh. Luckily I have an obgyn appt in two weeks and will hopefully get some advice. It’s only been 6 months of trying but sheesh it’s been hard on me and us. What’s funny is that we waited for over a year before we started because I didn’t feel ready. :-/ Anyway, I’m not really asking for anything, I suppose. Just want to say that if you, too, have ever silently cried in a work bathroom stall – for women’s issues or any other issues – I’m with you and we are tough stuff.

I’m sorry. Hugs <3. I know the feeling and don't think it's silly…I postponed TTC for years because I wasn't ready, but when I finally decided I was ready I wanted to be pregnant rightthatminute. I hope the appointment with your OB is useful.

It sucks. I’m in the IF boat too. My advice is don’t wait too long to get into therapy if you need it. I had SO MANY FEELINGS and therapy was very helpful. I wish I had done it sooner but it just seemed like too much on top of fertility treatments that weren’t working.

Cried in the bathroom stall today. Hugs bathroom buddy!

We are planning a move with many unknowns. How would you tackle this?
We will need to move closer to DH’s work. He expects to transition to full time from contractor in two months which is when we will have the green light to move. We want to keep our current home and rent it out. The market is pretty good, and we expect about two months from advertisement to renter moving in (based on neighbor’s experience with identical stats). We also need to find a preschool for our child and a rental for us to move into. I started looking at some preschools but the two I liked were a little far from DH’s work (30 min) to immediately commit. We can look for housing in between, and I’ve seen some decent stuff pop up there but they want renters moving in ASAP, not two months from now. Caveat that preschools/rentals are all about 1.5 hours away and it’s very difficult for me to find time to go look at something. We’re obviously trying to minimize time we’re double paying for housing. No relocation assistance. Has anyone done something similar? What was your strategy?

I think about it as: you are optimizing a 4 variable problem. Your workplace, spouse’s workplace, kid’s school, and your home. (If you have another kid in a different school, throw that in there). You want to make sure you minimize as many dimensions of this problem as possible, so that your travel time between the 4 pegs is not eating up your whole day. Therefore consider ways to:
– put your home next to school
– pick your school next to one of your workplaces
– put your home in between the two workplaces
– put your home right next to one workplace
There are many options but ideally, you will reduce the 4 variable problem to a 3 dimensional problem, where two of those points collapse into one neighborhood. If you want to optimize even further, you collapse another dimension.
Maybe this is obvious but it took me a little while to realize this (and I have two kids) and work to put some structure around the different possibilities.

To 39yo post breakup:
I saw the coffee break post late yesterday and wanted to reach out to the 39 year old who broke up about a month ago and feels defeated about dating and wants a friend to hang out with. I’m sorry for what you’re going through! If you post your location, I’m sure somebody on here will meet you for a coffee or drink so you can vent. If you are in the SF Bay Area, let me know and I will be there.
Also with your married friends, send them a note to say how you are feeling and despite kids and struggles, I’ll bet some of them will step up to hang out with you more as you go through this.
anon
+1 if you’re in the DC area! I’m married and have my own struggles, but I am never ever too busy to hang out with a friend or go through this with them. If one of my friends were in your shoes, I would so hope she’d call on me, and honestly however inconvenient it might be for me to make time, I’d want to do that for my friend.
Ellen
And it could have been me! I to am available to hang out with as Alan and I are history, and you can be freinds with Myrna and I if you are in NYC. We are both about 39 years old and we do not think we are going to find decent men either, but who knows, we could be like the cast of S-x and the City, drink Manhattan’s and Rob Roys and find each find ourselfs our own Mr. Big who will take care of us for the rest of our lives! YAY!!! It is always a possibility for us! DOUBEL YAY!!!

Does anyone know where to get affordable suiting in natural materials? Banana Republic cut an amazing affordable wool suit about 10 years ago (the jacket is still the workhorse of my wardrobe!) but they seem to have transitioned to polyester-based fabrics which I’m trying to eliminate from my closet because it looks cheap, makes me static and pollutes our waterways with micro-plastics.
Fortune has a great feature on tailor-made suiting for women but unfortunately I’m not (yet, haha) looking for a suit in the $5K range :)
Thanks to anyone who can help!
