Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. I always love knit sweater jackets like this — they're a step up from a cardigan, but less formal (and more comfortable) than a blazer. This viscose/nylon knit looks lovely, and black is certainly versatile. The jacket was $115, then marked to $79, but with today's sale it comes down to $47. Neiman Marcus Three-Button Knit Jacket Here's a plus-sized alternative as well. Seen a great piece you’d like to recommend? Please e-mail tps@corporette.com.Sales of note for 9.10.24

Ooh, I really like this. It looks like it would go well with my other “frugal” Friday purchase of this black tweed skirt on one-day sale at garnet hill. http://www.garnethill.com/favorite-pencil-skirt/sale-clearance/sale-of-the-day/363188?&defattribvalue=main

Oh no. I am very close to pulling the trigger on BOTH of these items now! What is the quality of Garnet Hill? I have never ordered from there before.
AIMS
I’ve only ordered casual clothes from GH but the quality has always been solid. The only concern is sizing – sometimes their items are huge, although the reviews seem to say that this skirt runs small.

I like this and I’m ordering. I need some new jackets. But I wish I could find similar items in Not Black. I feel like there is just too much dark stuff in my wardrobe, and I also wish I could get other colors near my face, since black makes me look kind of blah.

Oh my goodness. I love that skirt. I am actually thankful that it isn’t available in my size, otherwise, I’d totally be making some financial priority decisions!

I just purchased- It actually came all the way down to $39 for me. Great find, Kat!

This is a total long shot, but I bought some boots in the sale at 6pm, I don’t like them and apparently you have to pay for returns (this is NOT a thing in the UK, it never even occurred to me to check)!! They sent me a HUG box and you have to return in original packaging so it would basically cost me almost as much as the cost of the boots to return them. I do not want to take them back to the UK because I have enough luggage as it is.
They’re now $79.99 but I paid $49.99 (and honestly I just want to get rid of them) and they are a 7.5 – if anyone in NYC would like them, please let me know. I’m going into moderation anyway because I’m posting from work, so here’s the link and my email is ellecommawoods@gmail.com http://www.6pm.com/nine-west-vermillion-3

6pm has really good customer service (although it can be a little slow). If you email them, explain the situation, and ask for a returns label, chances are they will send you one. I’ve received free returns in the past when an item was of very poor quality.
Anonymous
Shipping will not remotely approach $49 FYI. It’s primarily on weight not size. Just download a return label from them and send it back.
S
Agreed. Mine’s usually around $11 return from 6PM
Wordy
Does “original packaging” mean the shipping box or the boot box? I often do not return things in the original shipping box.
Mountain Girl
“Original Packaging” is just the boot box not the shipping box. I have sent things back in different shipping boxes with no problem. If you can find something smaller to mail back in you should have no problem.
Parfait
This.
And don’t fret, Woods! Mailing things costs less here than it does in the UK even though the distances are much greater.

If you don’t find any takers, you can always donate them to Goodwill, still probably cheaper than shipping them back.
PolyD
Could you put them in a smaller box or even a very large envelope to send them back, to reduce shipping costs?
Other option is something like Thred-Up, where you can send clothing and shoes for free and get some money for them. It’s basically an online thrift store. You wouldn’t recoup your whole cost, but it might be better than nothing.
I do proceed carefully with 6pm, basically I’ll just buy brands I know very, very well and I try to be certain I’ll want to keep the item. It still backfires sometimes, though. And whenever I am asked to answer questions about my 6pm experience, I always write in “Provide pre-paid flat rate return shipping,” when I am asked what would improve my experience. I get that because they sell stuff rather cheaply, they might need to ask you to pay to ship the stuff back, but it would be nice it it were a flat rate with a pre-paid label, like lots of places do, because going to the post office is sort of a pain for me.

+1 for ThredUp
Woods-comma-Elle
Thanks guys, unfortunately you have to send the original box and the USPS postage is still almost $40!
Honestly, I wouldn’t have ordered had I known this, but it never even occurred to me returns would cost something!
ThredUp sounds awesome, thanks!
People's Republic
W-c E, I actually don’t think you have to send the original box. That’s the preferred option, but the other option is to include the return email they send you in whatever box you send. (Of course you have to send the shoe box, just not the shipping box.) You can confirm with with customer service, but I’m fairly positive. The only reason they want the original box is because it contains certain sku information that contains useful information for the return. But, there is a bar code on the email they send you that contains the same set of information. Good luck!
Anonymous
Just FYI, I’ve never gotten more than a couple bucks per item from ThredUp, even for nicer brands and things that were new with tags. I’d only do that if you’re fine getting something like $5 for them.
AIMS
Check with the post office for the actual rate for return (ask for cheapest option) if you don’t find any takers. Size of box has nothing to do with postage. I’d guess you could return them for ~$13-15 postage.
Anonymous
Agree, check USPS. If you go first-class mail (vs. Priority), it’s pretty cheap to send packages. Way cheaper than UPS or FedEx.

Love this.
Brant
Our company had a major reorg and I now have the head of compliance for our business unit reporting into me. I didn’t hire him, but i did interview him and suggested we look for another candidate.
He’s super bright, but really difficult to work with and doesn’t have the right skill set for the job. What we need him to do is understand changes to regulations that impact our business and it’s products. He’s been with the company for 6 months, and doesn’t know what our business unit really does. So if we say “please go research issue X and the impacts to our business,” we get a 50 slide powerpoint document of carefully (over) researched information, and no tie back into our product/business.
In addition to his not knowing our product/industry (which I can teanch him), I need him to tone down the legalese; it’s super confusing to our entire organization. We get emails that are…well…they read like they are coming from your attourney, not your colleague.
What’s a good approach to helping him fit in better to the company, both from a cultural perspective as well as a “dig in and learn the business.”? I feel like he was sold a totally different job than we need him to be doing, but I didn’t hire him. We will certainly be doing a “so here’s what I expect of you; is this what you expect of the role? If not, let’s talk.”
Anonymous
All he needs is clear and straightforward expectations. This situation sounds like a case of poor management, not poor performance.
Brant
Yeah, I don’t think it’s poor performance, except that he’s not doing what we need him to do. My bigger thought is that he was sold a totally different job than what we need, but we’ll tease that out in the next couple of weeks as we have those conversations about expectations.
Anon
As someone who this has happened to in a major way, it really doesn’t matter. Either he gets with the game after a sit down talk, or he chooses to move on. It isn’t and wasn’t fair, but life isn’t fair. Just be really honest about the feedback, tell him its coming from a place of wanting to keep him on staff because you appreciate the depth of this work, but that in order to keep him on board there needs to be a restructuring of his position/work.
Meg Murry
Its seems like the legalese could be an easy place to start with. If no one has ever told him to tone down the legalese, how would he know that isn’t what is expected at your company in his role?
As for teaching him the business – could he work with a few of your employees on their tasks so he could learn the business by doing? Would he be open to a “rotation” through some of the different roles (and is he suited for it)?
Anon
+1 When I started in my current role it was a complete 180 from everything I had ever done. It is a very nuanced area of the law so my company put me through a two-day orientation where I met with several people from several departments and they told me about what they did and how it tied in with the organization. Even though I am not working in any of their departments, that experience was immensely helpful in understanding how the entire company works and made me much more competent in every aspect of my role.
Ella
The talk about expectations would probably be welcome from him too – for all you know, he feels he’s been sold a false bill of goods. One thing about toning down the legal talk – a plain language course. At my org, all staff have to take it and it is wonderful.
MJ
This to me sounds like a case of someone who is not used to being a business partner, instead of an outside legal/compliance officer. You (or whomever is managing him on his actual performance) need to sit him down and tell him that you want (i) less letter of the law/more business focused advice that is _realistic_ not fully risk-averse (ii) for him to sit in on business unit meetings/trainings/client presos (whatever is appropriate/available) until he understands what you are doing. If he needs to shadow an exec for a while to get it or attend an outside training/industry conference, then that’s what he needs to do. If you need to send him some summaries of business unit’s activities or have some meetings where he connects with stakeholders, set those up.
And if you want him not to come back with 50 slide-ppts, then you need to say, “Bob, I need you to research XYZ with respect to ABC, and I want a memo of less than 2 pages, not in legalese, on how this impacts DEF aspects of ABC business.” Brevity is a skill. It’s a lot harder to be thoughtful than to data dump, especially in law. Make him be thoughtful.
You can’t really fire an employee for not getting it unless you take steps to counsel him or her into the expectations you need. You need to engage in expectation-setting wrt getting deliverables and work product that are useful. If he needs to run the deliverables by you or someone for vetting before they are distributed to the broader group, do that. Then you can give him feedback. Right now, sounds like he’s either operating in a vacuum or is not being told that you need something else. If he continues to put out useless work product after you’ve explained bizunit’s needs, that’s a wholly different conversation, but you need to start somewhere.
Good luck.
Brant
Thanks, this is very helpful. I have no intentions of firing him; in fact, I think he’s perfectly capable of stepping it up. I just wanted some thoughts on what the right angle would be.
I’ve already got “get to know the biz” things lined up, have been working with sales to get him on client calls etc. But your comment on “business partner” vs “outside council” is spot on and I think that’s how I’ll frame the conversation. Exactly the perspective I was looking for.
It’s also not quite “legalese,” so much as it is super stuffy writing. As in, I can tell it took him 20 minutes to craft a response to an email (which reads like it should have footnotes), when a simple “sounds good!” would have sufficed :)
MJ
This article from WSJ might be helpful. I thought it was fantastic.

anon a mouse
It does sound like he’s misinterpreting the work assignments. He hears “research” and thinks that’s the most important piece, when you need him to assess the impacts of these changes. It might be helpful to structure it into questions for him – What are the key pieces of X changes? Now, given those changes, does the business unit need to change any of its operations? If so, how? If not now, will these changes impact future business operations, and if so, how?

I drew my 38 year old cousin’s name in our family grab. She’s modest, doesn’t care much about being fashionable (ie: not sure clothes would be a good purchase), contently single, and.. well, just a homebody. She does bake a lot, and has at one time or another been involved in a wine club. I’m stumped. $50 max… any fabulous ideas out there other than a dull gift card?

Do you know anything about her television preferences – a couple of box sets of her favorite shows might be fun. Or a Roku if she doesn’t already have one (actually I don’t know how much those cost.) You can find lots of fancy baking goodies at King Arthur Flour. I would personally love a gift card from there. Not sure what she has, but some of the less-common tools or luxury ingredients might be nice. I’d never buy for myself but would love a mini scone pan, a fancy bundt pan, bread cloche, mandolin, pie carrier, bakewell cream powder, expensive vanillas and cocoas, non-melting decorating sugar, or pretty much any of their gift sets.

baking or fancy foods from Williams Sanoma (fleur de del comes to mind). Does she knit or crochet?

I bake a lot around the holidays. My essentials would be a commercial quality half sheet pan and a Silpat the same size. Two of each if it’s in the budget. Like most bakers I have these things already but they get grubby over time and it would be thrilling to have shiny new ones.
Other than that, silicone lined pot holders (not mitts) are also great and a set of two with matching kitchen towels would also be a welcome gift for a baker, particularly if you know her kitchen colors.
These are the kinds of things most bakers/ cooks wouldn’t necessarily replace for themselves if the ones we have are still serviceable, but it is so nice to have new, clean everyday items.
Anon
I like to bake too and right now on my wish list is a nice ceramic pie pan with a scalloped edge (I could never have too many pretty ones), a silicone crust cover (not sure if that is the technical term, haha), and new pretty apron.

Just bought it. I don’t need blazers at all and wouldn’t wear them except in winter, when they don’t really fit under winter coats, but this will fit the bill, I think.
Working from home today until about noon. Then I’m going to pick up my 3-year-old nephew from pre-school. I’m taking him to the hospital to meet his new baby brother. Then we’ll head to my parents’ house to spend the weekend. I expect to be utterly exhausted by the time the weekend is over, but it should be fun.

I drew my aunt for our holiday gift grab; she’s early 50s, very fashionable (in a TJMaxx/ Nordstrom fashionista sort of way). She’s big into br@st cancer research (she’s got a professional role but on the side she volunteers to run their corporate charity fundraisers, which are big with Komen). She doesn’t have kids, and she and her husband like local weekend getaways. They are not big foodies, and they do have cats.

Could someone give me advice on how to talk to a paralegal at my firm about mistakes she made? Basically, the paralegal I usually work with was busy and we needed an urgent cite check, so I was referred to another paralegal who is fairly new to the firm (and fresh out of college). The new paralegal made some really basic errors in her cite check that I ended up having to fix myself. I feel like I should probably say something about it, but I’m not technically her supervisor or anything, and I don’t know her at all so I don’t want it to seem like I’m bossing her around out of the blue. Do I just drop her an email alerting her to these errors, or do I let her supervisor know?
mascot
Go speak to her directly and nicely. Take a copy of whatever you marked up and go over it with her. I wouldn’t involve the supervisor for something like this. She may end up helping you out in the future so it’s helpful to correct mistakes now and get a solid working relationship.
Anonymous
+1. She hasn’t done anything that justifies involving her supervisor but let her know what she did wrong so she can learn. She sounds inexperienced, not lazy or incompetent. I agree that talking to her in person is better than email if you don’t know her well.
Anonny
Not every element of coaching in the workplace has to come to or go through a supervisor. In fact, I think that can make it more confrontational than what it sounds like you’re looking to do. She’s junior and mistakes should be anticipated (to a reasonable extent). You were new once, too, so take it from that angle – just talk to her directly and give her the feedback. Tell her what was wrong and why it was wrong. Offer suggestions for how she can spot check her work (send her an example of a good cite check?) – set her up for success going forward. Only engage the supervisor the mistakes persist after you’ve addressed them with her.
kc esq
In my experience, many paralegals do not know how to cite-check and at some firms it is not their responsibility. It doesn’t surprise me at all that one fresh out of college would have no idea how to do so. I think that you should tell her (nicely) that there were errors in her cite-checking and suggest that *she* ask her supervisor about getting training to improve her cite-checking skills.
MJ
If you are an attorney who used a paralegal, you are her supervisor, full stop. Her manager does not manage her day-to-day work, her attorneys do. Be kind and gentle, but paralegals like this (noobs) will not get better if they do not get guidance about how to do better next time. If you have a resource that would be helpful for training (website, senior para, etc.) hook her up. Don’t just tell her, “You didn’t do this right.” Noob paralegals definitely improve, but only if you put effort into it. Otherwise they fester in ineptitude because people don’t speak up. I promise–your speaking up will do her a favor.
And remember, even if someone is pulled onto your project, if you are an atty and that person is a paralegal, you are supervising them. Not sure what state you are in, but this can be _by law_. It’s not an org chart situation. Remember that you are responsible.
Ellen
Yay! Fruegel Friday’s! I love Fruegel Friday’s and this blazer, though it is a little SHORT for my taste’s and dad would NOT like it b/c it would show to much of my TUCHUS and that is NEVER a good thing, at least according to HIM! FOOEY!
As for the OP, do what I do. When Lynn messes up, I tell her. And the same with Mason, even tho he is an attorney, he is NOT admitted in NY and that mean’s I am responsible for him if he misstate’s the law or the fact’s. They are a lot MORE lenent in his state and that is why the law is goeng downhill b/c lawyer’s are JUST not as carful as they were 6 year’s ago when I was a newly minted attorney at law! FOOEY on the law and the dumbing down of the profesion! In fact, I wish I could have more smarter attorney’s in my own office, b/c the manageing partner is the smartest one and he is VERY lazy! DOUBEL FOOEY!

In the meantime I have to work with a lot of lazy schlubs and carry the entire firm on my back! I will make my 7200 hours this year, but onley b/c I work all the time and bill for it. I suppose that is why I am a partner! YAY!!!!!!
rosie
I usually handle these things as things to learn from, not things for which I expect endless apologizing. Like a, “so you know for next time, the cite should be like this” or whatever the issue is. And depending on what the issue was, I might talk to the person responsible for paralegal training to alert them that they needed to do more training on certain issues, and at my firm, that would not get anyone in trouble.

Just ordered the sweater as well!
Two questions for the group:
1. Did anyone order the Open Weave Buckle-Front Cashmere Cardigan from Neiman Marcus that Kat featured on October 28? I am in love with it, but haven’t seen it in person and it’s a bit more than I normally spend on sweaters. Anyone have anything similar to recommend at a lower price point? It doesn’t need to be cashmere (and actually, I’d prefer if it wasn’t).
2. I am going to a cookie exchange this weekend and need a suggestion for an easy, but delicious cookie. Emphasis on the word “easy” — I am a terrible baker. I would prefer it be nut free.

Sweater report
Hi, yes, I ordered it in the berry color and sent it back. The open weave looked too much like a bulky crocheted blanket to me: nice for snuggling under but not a good look as an item of clothing. I thought the closure looked cheap too. No good ideas for a substitute, sorry!
SC
I ordered the open-weave cardigan in light blue when it went on sale a week or two later for $177. I love it! I’ve probably worn it once or twice a week since I bought it. It’s soft and warm, and I love wearing it. The open weave does resemble crochet, but on me the sweater isn’t bulky at all. My only concern with the sweater so far is that the closure seems to be pulling on the sweater and may cause it to fray or tear over time. But right now, I’d say that it was worth the money.
Angela
I am also a terrible baker but I can make these bars called Hello Dollies or Magic Bars…Google them, crust of graham crumbs, layer of condensed milk, choc chips, coconut, nuts, bake 25 min. I bake in square throw away tin foil pans, cool, wrap in cellophane and done. And if you forgive my rudeness, if you are doing it this weekend, it can take a few hours to make a few batches…oh, I do skip the nuts sometimes
Meg Murry
I really like this – I picked up a Terry blazer featured on the mom’s s!te that I get a lot more use out of than I expected I would, so now I’m keeping my eye out for something similar but in a color other than black or a light heathered gray (looks too sweatshirt-y to me) like shown in the plus sized pick.
Any recommendation for a plus sized version that comes in other colors? Maybe dark grey? Or an actual color?

Last day at my job! I have a few things to finish handing off, lunch with my closest work friends, and plan to be out the door by 4:30. I’m looking forward to a blissful week off – no job to even think about! – before starting my new position on the 15th.

All right, two more questions for the group (lots on my mind today):
– How much do people tip for food delivery? My MIL and I were discussing last night. She says 20% is appropriate, I tend to do $4-$5, regardless of bill size (as the amount of work to deliver doesn’t increase with food size the way it does for a waiter). Also, I have always assumed that drivers make minimum wage, but maybe that is not the case?
– What are some items in the $100 range that you might not buy for yourself but would love to receive as a gift? My initial instinct was something like nice yoga pants, but would love some more ideas!

A Kindle (I broke mine) or an upgraded one if you have an old one. Amazon Prime, or 1 year of Netflix or HuluPlus. Nice soft bathrobe and/or slippers. New sheets, blankets or duvet cover. High quality headphones/earbuds. Nice nonstick skillet (or 2).

Or just about anything on these lists:

My go to is 15-20%. More on the 15% side because restaurants typically charge a delivery fee on top of everything anyways…
I like all of Meg Murry’s suggestions…would want any of those items in my stocking!

A cashmere waterweave scarf – they are the warmest winter scarf, cozy for lounging at home and a nice evening wrap.

AIMS
I think it’s a lot more work to bring 3 bags of food vs. 1 so I don’t agree that the size of order is irrelevant. I also tend to tip more in bad weather, esp. since I read an article about how lots of people tip poorly in rainy/snowy weather because they’re not regular orderers and thus figure it doesn’t matter (I don’t get that mindset but still).
Anyway, maybe my calculus is a bit different because I am in NYC where the delivery people usually travel by bike/walk, but I still think carrying 3 bags of food to/from the car and making sure everything arrives hot and intact requires effort. I usually do 15% of the total and adjust as needed based on other factors (late night, weather, etc.). I also tip a bit more if it’s something cheap like a small pizza pie because 15% of that might only be like $2.
AIMS
For no. 2: fancy PJs; a really nice umbrella; a mid-size leather wristlet; one of those pottery barn jewelry organizers; a faux fur throw; fancy desk accessories (I want one of those old fashioned blotters and a spiffy pen holder) . . .

On the tipping question, I tip ~20% for food delivery, but if that comes to under $5, I boost it to $5.

I never tip less than $6 for delivery, even if the total is low.

You all rock! Thanks for the suggestions. Also, thanks for the thoughts on tipping. It sounds like I am tipping on the low side, so I’ll start doing a little more.
AIMS, I agree for 3 bags v 1, particularly when the driver is actually a biker. We’re in the suburbs so all deliver comes in cars and I’ve never had a delivery of more than one bag.
Bonnie
We typically tip 10-15% for delivery depending on weather and order size. I agree that it takes more work to bring in a larger order.
I had a number of things below $100 on my Christmas list including a new yoga mat, nice slippers, yoga fundamentals DVD set, and the Starbucks tumbler that includes coffee for the month of January.

Food delivery – we always round up to the next round number. £21? They get £25. £36? They get £40… And so on.

This has some really cool tipping statistics:

My 20 something nephew delivers pizza part time. $5 cash is a good tip for one or two pizzas. Don’t add the tip to the credit card bill if you can avoid it, cash is king. If it’s a large order, obviously you should tip more.
If the joint adds a delivery fee, don’t assume that goes to your delivery person. Tip on top of that.

I guess I’m stingy – I usually only tip around 10% on the pretax, pre-delivery fee amount for delivery.
Manhattanite
Seamless defaults to 10%. I forget whether it’s before or after tax. But I’ll add extra in bad weather.
Cardigans Be Gone
This seems like the kind of thing people were suggesting for the poster earlier this week who was having issues with cardigans looking frumpy. I forget who it was.

You guys, I’m owrried about my dog. His stomach has been upset for several days and he’s nauseous so he can’t keep down food. He seems to have improved this morning, and I don’t think it’s a huge deal but he’s almost 17 so I worry about everything these days. He’s in good spirits and has a remarkable amount of excitement and energy for a dog his age. I’m hopeful, but he’s at the vet now and I’m dreading bad news :(
Anon
Good luck! Did you try hamburger and rice?
anonymous
yeah. he licked it and sniffed at it and was clearly hungry, but he didn’t eat it.
thanks :)

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you and your dog!
Seattle Freeze
Hoping the vet has something helpful for you. One of my dogs has a pretty tricky stomach – notorious for her breed – and I find that famotidine (Prilosec)helps when she’s queasy & doesn’t want to eat. My vet okayed use as needed, even daily if her stomach gets worse.
I’ve also heard that some dogs will eat if hand-fed when they’ve rejected food in the bowl.
anonymous
Thanks, this is really helpful. My dog has always had a fairly sensitive stomach. What breed is yours?
Seattle Freeze
She’s a Dobie – lots of health issues associated with the breed, but fortunately the stomach is the only one we’ve seen so far.
I also need to correct my reference above – famotidine is the generic for Pepcid, not Prilosec. I use the generic OTC famotidine.
Anonymous
Wow what a great life he must have if he’s 17! I’ll hope the vet can come up with a solution for you – good vibes across the internet anyway!

Thanks all! My little baby is totally fine- he just has a stomach ulcer which is easily treatable. Apparently common, but now I need to stop feeding him table scraps, including his favorite grass fed beef. yes, he is very spoiled.
Tall Ladies Query re Sweater Blazers
Has anyone _ever_ found a sweater blazer in a Tall size? This would be the holy grail for me. Alas, have never seen one. My monkey arms would look ridic in a non-tall blazer.
