Finding a great summer hat can be a challenge. If you're going to go to the trouble of wearing it, you want it to actually protect your face from the sun — but you also want it to look cute! And finally, you want it to be transportable. I have some hats where if I just look at them funny I feel like they get wrinkled.
So the fact that this hat has so many glowing reviews at Nordstrom is great — and I love the combination of the fedora/wide visor. (In fact, MOST Eric Javits hats are highly reviewed — good to know if this exact style isn't calling your name.)
Readers have also sung the praises of packable hats from Walleroo in the past (we also had a whole conversation about summer hats a few years ago!). Where have you gotten your favorite summer hats, readers?
Our Latest Favorite Summer Hats
Hats readers have loved (as of 2024) include those from Wallaroo and Eric Javets for sun hats; Kat's always liked her basic Adidas hat. This really popular bucket hat has a hole for your ponytail!

I have an enormous head (a lot of men’s hats will not fit) and I get all my hats from Tilley Hats. Not cheap but very well made! They do not have a specific tennis hat but they have a few that might work.

I also have a big head and I have 3 Sombrero’s from Mexico that I like to wear about town and on the beach. These always attract a lot of attention, but I need to keep the sun away from my neck and face b/c otherwise I peel, and that is NOT attractive. I have a share in the Hamton’s this Summer with Myrna, even tho we could go to the manageing partner’s house b/c we feel a bit uncomfortable there with the manageing partner’s brother there all Summer out at the pool. He does not care about the sun and his head is brown as a walnut, especially b/c he is bald like the manageing partner. I would have put up with his antics, but Myrna does not like him ooogeling her and rubbing up to her in the pool intentionally. He thinks that he is Don Wan or something! FOOEY!

Kind of a gross question, so skip if you’re not interested in toilet talk.
As CA residents, we’re trying to do our part to save water, so we’ve adopted “if it’s yellow, let it mellow…”. We probably let it go 4-5 uses before flushing (we still flush after every #2, obviously). Before starting this, my toilet bowl was always white, but as we let the #1 sit in it, the bowl is turning brown where the water sits. Besides scrubbing it every day, which I’m not really into, what’s the best way to keep your toilet bowl clean? Do those tablet things you put in the tank really work? If so, what brands work for you? If not, is there something else? Sorry for the yucky question, but it bothers me every time I pick up the toilet lid.
Anonymous
This is a flushing problem not a cleaning problem. It’s one thing if someone is going immediately after the other person and the second person flushes (with covid we usually both go before we leave the house so we can avoid public bathrooms), but leaving it 4-5 uses is not going to work if you want your bathroom to not be gross. Aside from the toilet bowel issue, there is the odor issue.
Go for it
Add a tablespoon of baking soda after each #1. It helps with odor & discoloration.
It is harmless to plumbing.
Anon
We lived with a janky old septic tank growing up, so this was necessity, and you just need to let your standards down a tad. It is what it is.
anon
I let it go two uses before flushing, and not in the morning, when it’s more concentrated. It hasn’t made a difference in cleanliness.
Anony
I’ve done this for years and so does my mom. I drink an insane amount of water and usually have near colorless #1 except for first thing in the morning. I flush when I wake up and then every 2-3 uses during the day if I’m home all day (if I’m leaving for the day, I flush no matter what). And the toilet gets discolored as you described, but not so quickly that I need to scrub it everyday. I scrub about every 5-7 days.
Anonymous
Flush more
Anon
You may be better off adjusting the water level in your toilet to save water if possible and flush more often. Tablets in the tank will degrade your rubber parts and eventually cause a leak.
anon
I’d also think the chemicals in the tablets are probably not great for the environment, either. You can put things like a brick or used water bottle full of water in the tank to use less water per flush.
Anon
Get a toilet that is not white
Anon
4-5 uses is a lot. We can only go 2-3 before we flush or our toilet gets disgusting.
Horse Crazy
Thanks, all. Flushing more often it is!
Anon
Lifelong Californian who has lived through many droughts. Make sure your toilet is low flow (put a brick in a plastic bag in your tank if not) and then flush every other time for #1. Not every 4th or 5th.
Anonymous
Ignore the naysayers—good for you for trying to reduce your water usage. As long as you flush before guests come over and no one sees it, who cares.
I’m also “mellower” and used to have the same toilet bowl staining issue (though to be fair, there may be something with our water…the unused toilet in the guest bath would get some rings at the water line too). My husband did a ton of research on products and went with the Fluidmaster “Fresh n Sparkle” system about two years ago. Our toilet bowls have been very clean since! I think we use the bleach refills, but looks like they offer a septic safe version too. From my understanding, the chemicals don’t sit in the water tank so no risk of degrading the internal parts.
LaurenB
I am surprised that this is a new thing — we’ve done this for years (when we are at home by ourselves — if we have visitors / guests, we don’t). Don’t let it sit for hours — if one of us has to pee, we routinely ask the other “do you have to” so that we can get one flush to cover us both. Also, you can flush and then drop a Polident / denture cleanser tablet in the bowl part – it’s a good temporary cleanser. Finally — and this has nothing to do with your question, but there is a thing called Pottymints and I swear, it provides a great, long-lasting smell — it’s like a breath mint for your toilet.

Cute sandal recommendations? I have the Eileen Fisher ones that look like open-sided Chuck Taylors, but they are nubuck and a oily sauce accident has made them my comfy sandals and not my go-to ones. But what to get to replace? I liked that these were a stealth sneaker, but in sandal form, and they were cute enough. I need happy feet. What is out there like this now? I feel like the last time I looked for sandals was 2019 or possibly earlier.
If you are looking for a good for your feet sandal, this is it! $ but actually worth it. I just don’t want two of them. I’d like something a bit different.

Sinuses
Late 30s and in the past year or two, I swear I’ve spent much of it with sinus pain in my cheeks and eyebrows. Doing nothing turns it into a headache which triggers a migraine. Generic sudaf3d works but I’m sick of being reliant on them for summer and winter seasons and am not sure this doseage of 180 mg (the minimum to work at this point). I am not physically dependent and love when my face doesn’t need it but I don’t know what else to do since I can’t sit in steam every few hours all day and night. No health insurance means doc visits are very expensive and last one told me just to keep taking this. Is this just about getting old?!
Anonymous
I’d guess either allergies or unresolved sinus infection are probably at the root of chronic pain. Maybe see if daily allergy medicine helps. Also could be dental in nature. (I have TMJ and massage from someone the specialist referred me to did a world of good on loosening up my whole face.) When I feel this way, putting one or two hot water bottles on my face for a few minutes helps a TON.
No Face
Is it allergy related? My allergies are noticeably worse the past few years than they used to be. Same for my mom, and her allergies cause sinus problems.
I am on a strict, daily regimen of flonase sensimist and zyrtec. That was sufficient for a couple of years. Now I’ve added a prescription allergy pills within the past few months, and OTC allergy eye drops this week.
Anon
Just curious, do you actually have thick fluid in your sinuses and signs of infection? If not, you might want to consider whether this is actually a form of migraine. I say this as someone who has chronic migraine that was originally diagnosed as sinus headaches, which is super common. Irritation of the trigeminal nerve can cause symptoms that seem like sinus problems but are really migraine symptoms and treating it like migraine will help (I also thought sudafed helped some, but migraine drugs are way better). Seeing a neurologist would be ideal, but a PCP could also prescribe migraine drugs and there are some companies that do this online now, though I don’t have personal experience with them.
Anon
Exact same thing happened to me, I thought I had chronic sinus issues but I never had much mucus and an MRI didn’t show any inflammation. Migraine drugs help.
Anon
I take zyrtec, claritin, and allegra every night plus flonase. I live in an area where most people have severe allergies due to high humidity and pollen, and so this is just part of life for me!
Anonymous
You take all of those in combination every night? IANAD, so I do not know. But has a doctor okay’ed that?
Anon
If you’re not a doctor maybe you shouldn’t butt in about it.
Doc
Well, here’s a different commenter who is a doctor, and if this is the OP taking (gulp) three antihistamines at once then yes…. I would ask has a doctor okay’ed that?
And I’m eager to get you signed up with Obamacare. It might be more affordable than you think with subsidies, although I agree that it often has terrible networks and high co-pays and deductibles but it is better than nothing.
Anon
Not a doctor and don’t play one on TV either, but want to cosign about Obamacare. Not having health insurance is not a sustainable situation even if the OP is healthy as a horse other than these sinus issues. It is absolutely not perfect but absolutely better than nothing; I hope the OP realizes that one medical emergency can leave her in dire financial straits for years if she doesn’t have some kind of insurance.
Anon
Sounds like you need sinus surgery.

I get sinus pain when my sinuses are too dry. Regular saline nasal drops are very helpful. Just something to try if you haven’t yet.

Dating Q
What are you doing with dating in a c0vid world? I told a guy on an app that I wanted to do a call and a video call first before meeting (I’m thinking that if those go well mutually, there’d be enough interest to be worth the risk of a meet which I would prefer to do outside). I also said I was willing to get tested before meeting if that makes everyone feel most comfortable. He seemed surprised. However, I have a friend’s young child in my c0vid bubble and, much as I want to find a match, I also want to keep my bubble safe.
How are you handling it if you are back to dating?
Anonymous
I find all of these precautions extremely weird and unnecessary if you are both vaccinated.
Anon
Me too, it’s over now if you’re vaxxed. The bubbles and all that are so last year.
Anon
Can you show each other your vaccination cards? Then I would just meet as normal.
anon
Even vaccinated, people can get c0vid and we don’t have the science on whether that type of infection could lead to long haul issues. It sounds like there is also a child to consider, so a vaccination card is a must but also more.
Anonymous
This is ridiculous and untrue
Aus Anon
The Australian government says to keep wearing masks even if vaccinated as there’s not enough evidence about the vaccine reducing transmission: https://www.health.gov.au/news/top-3-covid-19-vaccine-questions-vaccine-administration-process-face-masks-and-breastfeeding
Anon
And even taking precautions people died from car wrecks, falls, fluke accidents. The science on that is clear. So really you just need to stay e safe and stay home until you can ensure nothing bad will happen.
AFT
This – I think once people are vaccinated and numbers are relatively low, then meeting up in person (and canceling if anyone is symptomatic) makes sense. The CDC doesn’t think vaccinated people need to test if without symptoms, so asking someone who you know to be vaccinated to test before a date doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.
Anon
This feels wayyyy over the top for me if you’re both vaccinated
Anonymous
Yeah, does your parent friend even care? I have a 9 year old and would certainly not expect you to do this if you were in my bubble. If you are both vaccinated, go live your life.
No Face
Yeah, I have little kids and I do not expect vaccinated people to take any restrictions.
Anonymous
Have a phone call. If you click and If you are both vaccinated then meet up at an outdoor cafe for a coffee or go for a walk in the park. Mention that you’re not comfortable with physical contact at first meeting for covid reasons. Once you decide if you like him, then you can figure out what you are comfortable
with
Anon
I don’t think many people have covid bubbles anymore.
Anon
+1 I think we’re pretty cautious because of our young unvaccinated child – we don’t take her in public indoor places now that masks are no longer required – but we don’t have a “bubble” and we see fully vaccinated adults and their kids without worrying about masks or distancing.
child
I think about this differently since I believe the young child is at a low risk for complications from Covid.
anon
I am dating and I am back to “normal” because I am fully vaccinated.
There’s a zero percent chance that I am getting tested for someone who is also vaccinated.
Anon
Right? And not-vaccinated is a good weed out criteria (criterion?).
anon
+1. We’re down to ~2 cases per day in my area so OP’s precautions would be especially absurd to me. I’d pass on meeting someone who wants to remain stuck in 2020.
Cat
Not dating, but only seeing vaccinated people IRL. If he’s vaccinated you’re good to go in my view…
Monte
Actively dating and I would pass up anyone who required me to get tested — I have been fully vaccinated for months, am confident in the science, and have had no interactions with folks to make me second guess that (i.e. known exposure to some new strain that is more contagious than the Delta variant, which seems to be contained by the Pfizer/Moderna vaccines). And I say that as someone whose favorite people on earth are too young to be vaccinated.
Anonymous
As a parent to young kids I might ask you to meet dates outdoors – and stop coming to my indoor bubble if/when you feel there’s a risk.
Anon
Even if both OP and the dates are vaccinated though? This feels really over the top to an anti-scientific degree.

What would you wear to go see plays/musicals at the theater in the winter, nice long-sleeve dress/tights, more evening wear with lace/metallic sparkle and heattech-like layers underneath, business casual? My husband and I are going to NYC over Christmas, and I can’t wait to see as many plays/musicals as I can in five days.
Anon
I would wear a nice sweater and skirt or pants or dress with tights. I haven’t been to the theater in a while but it certainly doesn’t involve sparkly eveningwear unless that is what you enjoy wearing.
Anonymous
You will see a wide range of clothing (but not usually a lot of true “evening wear,” except maybe opening night at the opera). I usually just go with long-sleeve dress and tights, or just jeans and a nicer top.
Anon
My only caution to wearing underlayers is that I have twice been to the theater in the winter (not in NYC though) and it was like the building managers thought the heat needed to be on as high as possible. I nearly suffocated during the show and had to go to the bathroom to remove my tights during intermission. Maybe sticker to outer layers that you can easily remove.
Anonymous
This is good advice for NYC in general in the winter – super warm coat and lighter layers underneath. But I have to say theaters are usually cooler; I often keep my coat half on. It is my apartment that is a sauna.
Anonymous
I work for a theater in NYC. Truly, wear what you want. Assuming you will be playing tourist and running around all day, wear comfortable pants and layers. If you go on a weekday you may see people wearing clothes from work (unless you are seeing a show only tourists see maybe). I would wear jeans or other casual pants, long sleeve shirt, and a sweater unless I was going out for a fancy dinner before or after. Most people do not dress for the theater unless it is opening night. And thank you for coming! The industry needs you!
No Face
My winter uniform is scarf, cashmere dress, tights, and flat boots. The outfit is appropriate for 90% of functions that I would attend, including a play.
Anon
Jealous! This is a dream trip for me. My in-laws live in NYC but we’re lucky if we see one show when we visit because they (and my husband) aren’t into it.
No Face
Next time see a show or two by yourself if it’s in the budget!
Anon
Yeah, I do try to see one each time but can’t do more than that (because of time, not money) so this sounds dreamy to me.
Cat
definitely not business casual or formalwear. My last NYC theater was Nov of 2019 and people were wearing either dressy jeans outfits (nice sweater, boots or booties), sweater dresses, or similar stuff – what you’d wear to like, Thanksgiving dinner with extended family, not a wedding or work.
Anonymous
I find this so sad and refuse to go along with it. I waited so long and spent so much $$$ to take my family to see Hamilton a couple years ago. It was a big deal and I was certainly going to wear a dress. FFS, my midsize SEUS city, older women still wear actual furs to the theatre. Is it the tourists or the locals who are dressing down in NYC? I presume the locals don’t actually go to Broadway shows but stick to off-off-Broadway?
Anon
Some locals go to Broadway. I mean, on any given day the vast majority of people at a Broadway show are tourists but locals see Broadway shows too. Agree with Cat that jeans are the norm and you will stand out if you’re much more dressed up. Doesn’t mean you can’t do it! But it’s not the norm. The south is much more formal than NYC.
Cat
It’s tourists who are more likely to dress up IMHO – cities generally are waaaay more casual than they used to be. When we go out to nice dinners, designer denim prevails all winter.
Cat
That said – if you go in summer, women will be more likely to be in dresses because of the heat, but they’ll be more like expensive sundresses than dressy eveningwear.
Anon
I agree, but my favorite part of living in a major city is the total freedom to do whatever the F you want. I love dressing up and will go OTT to the theater, out to dinner, wherever, and it’s just “funky” rather than required. I also like that I can accept last minute invites for just about anything without worrying about a costume change.
Anonymous
hi! I’m about to move to an apartment for one year only. I will have guests within a few weeks of moving in and want to get it furnished and looking nice quickly! What are good resources for quick ship furniture that is nice/put together? I have a few things but am looking to make this look more cohesive so ideally would like to buy from stores that have a line I could just buy everything from. If cost was no object I would do Serena and Lily (for a sense of my taste..) but they are too $$ and also furniture takes weeks/months to ship.
Anon
I don’t think you’re going to have much luck getting things ordered and shipped in just a few weeks. Do you have an Ikea in a drivable radius? I’d go there and get what’s in stock.
Cat
+1, we are casually in the market for new furniture and were told that almost all the sofas at, for example, Ethan Allen, were on a 4+ month delay.
Anonymous
I agree furniture is taking forever to ship these days also… what about a rental place?
anon
Having recently bought a house I can tell you that literally everywhere is experiencing shipping delays. I would recommend shopping in person and asking about what is in stock. I have not had a single piece of furniture ordered in the past 8 months delivered on the initial delivery date and the initial delivery date for each was weeks out.

Has anyone else developed allergy-like symptoms to booze? Every time I drink my gut feels messed up for days. (Recent (former?) hard drinker, definitely in the “gray zone” people talk about)

Alcohol does a number on me even when I only have a small amount (2 drinks over, like, the whole night). I can feel stomach crampy or have general just unpleasantness in my gut, messed up appetite, head-foggy, sniffly, tired/lethargic. I’ve never been a “hard drinker” and I used to tolerate alcohol much better, but my body’s tolerance for it has seemed to plummet, especially since I turned 30 (35 now).

I have not, but my brother has, in his late 30s — particularly asthma-exacerbating symptoms. Nothing has helped but cold turkey.

Any moms around have good crocs knock offs for little ones? I went by one of the stores today and was shocked at the price of crocs for toddler feet. I like the concept, just not the price tag for a quickly growing boy.
Cat
Walmart sells dupes for Natives?
Anon
The price tag is worth it. I’ve tried knockoff Crocs and Natives and the knockoffs rub and cause blisters much more than the real thing. You can buy water shoes big and get at least one full season out of them, sometimes two.
Anonymous
Look online, usually you can find some styles on sale.

I’ve bought crocs for my kids. This year I bought them Amazon “Dino” ones (they have eyes and some teeth) because I didn’t want to pay the price of crocs. The kids like them fine, I dont notice a difference in quality. I think they were around $17 per pair.
Anonymous
Check your local parents FB group, eBay, and Poshmark. I’ve gotten new or basically new crocs for both kids in the $10-20 range. I’ve also sold multiple brand new kids shoes at a heavy discount in that FB group. Definitely learned my lesson to never attempt to forecast kids’ shoe sizes for the next season/year…no matter how tempting the sale may be
Hollis
I was in the same boat when my kids were little (although I liked keens and not crocs). I got the best deals on gently used stuff from Poshmark and ebay. Lots of kids get stuff like this as gifts and barely wear them before they grow out of them.

Aldi’s has them sometimes if you can find them. But agree with the others, get them used (or buy them new and then sell them when you’re done). Also start looking for sales on Bogs, they’re the best winter pull-on boots.

Has anyone had their thyroid out? My dad has (probable) thyroid cancer and is having his thyroid removed, as well as some benign parathyroid nodes. Would appreciate any info about the surgery and recovery time. I’m not too worried, the surgeon seems confident it will go well, but my dad is super freaked out. He’s 71 and quite overweight but otherwise in decent health.
Anon
My mom had thyroid removed a few years ago. I flew in and stayed with her for 2 days. The surgery was straightforward and recovery too (with the caveats about what foods she could swallow easily etc). She’s been taking thyroid pill every since and doing great! Good luck to your dad!
Anonymous
A good friend of our family had hers removed for thyroid cancer. The surgery went fine as far as I know. She had to take the radioactive iodine treatment twice and the prep and actual treatment for that seemed much worse. Not everyone has to do the iodine part. Hopefully your Dad does not.
When I had cancer, I connected with someone a few months ahead of me in treatment. It was very helpful. Check with your local cancer support organization to see if they have a mentoring program if you think that might be helpful to your Dad.
Anon
Thanks to you both. They said probably no RAI but they won’t know conclusively until after surgery. Given his age and the slow growth of thyroid cancer they seem pretty confident he’ll die of something else even if they don’t treat it very aggressively.

What the heck is going on in Portland OR with Antifa and riots? I’m supposed to visit in a few weeks but things sound really chaotic. Is this just isolated stuff or is it actually affecting the whole city?
Anon
I was just there for over a week. Just stay out of the downtown area, lot of other cute neighborhoods with delicious food and beer.
Anon
Longtime Portlander, longtime lurker.
The news is totally overblown, you’ll never be downtown by accident at night, and it’s totally isolated.
Come have a glass of wine on the east side of town, you’d never know there was anything going on.
Curious
I’m completely ignorant on Oregon, but do take media reports with a grain of salt. Coming from Seattle — the news makes it sound like we are burning to pieces when in reality e.g. the CHAZ area was like 4 blocks and easy to avoid. (Though the zone itself did get dangerous; my friend was paramedic to the young man who was shot and died. Please don’t let me minimize that.) Apparently this is often true (like it was actually fairly easy to avoid Tahrir Square during Arab Spring in Egypt, but the news made it sound like every street in Cairo was full of protestors). It’s been really interesting to see how much the media narrative (all of Seattle is rioting!) differs from my quiet day to day reality (part of my neighborhood looked different but I could avoid it except when the police decided to use sound bombs at 1 am and woke everyone up for a mile).
I realize this doesn’t give you the ground truth for Portland but basically: if it’s anything like it was here, it should be super easy for you to avoid. And then you can get voodoo donuts and otherwise enjoy!
Of Counsel
Was recently in Portland and the media has completely blown it out of proportion. Just ask your hotel’s front desk where to avoid and you will be fine.

What summer indoor “slipper” do you like?
I would like some support and not something that while I like an easy to slip on style, not something that easily slips off my feet. I’m going up/down stairs constantly.
In colder months I wear the Giesswein Women’s Ammern Slippers, and they work well. Easy to slip on, but a little ridge in the back to keep them on my duck shaped feet, great support/comfort.
Many thanks!

I wear Minnetonka moccasins as my summer slippers. The deerskin moccasins are softest. A pair lasts me at least 3-5 years–much longer than my winter house shoes.

Oh my goodness! I just had a flashback to my youth. Those moccasins were “in style” when I was a pre-teen. I used to wear them all the time a long time ago
They look like they would be hot/sweaty, no? It would be nice to go barefoot – my feet get sweaty easily. Do you wear socks?

No, they’re barefoot shoes to me. MN native here, and I grew up in moccasins (instead of flip-flops in summer). I always get deer or moose hide, with the leather insole. They are super cool and soft feeling, and mold to my feet before long.

Just ordered another pair of vionics slippers. They have a summer version that is a slide and open toe. Great arch support and Velcro on the front so you can adjust the width. Rubber sole so they don’t slip. I have plantar fasciitis and can’t walk barefoot. I wear them inside all the time.

Thanks for the rec. I haven’t tried Vionics but they are talked about a lot on this board. Are the true to size? I’m 9.5 – would you go up or down a half size if needed?

I have duck feet also and I love my Spenco slides kholo. I also go up and down wooden stairs. They run slightly on the big side. My husband loves the men’s version of this also.

Thanks for the rec! Looks supportive. So would you recommend I get a 9 if my normal size is 9.5? Thanks!
Hollis
Yes, I don’t remember if they have half sizes, but I would do exactly what you said – a half size or even a whole size smaller than your typical size and you’ll be set. If you’re buying on amazon, you can get a couple of sizes are return one also.

I gained so much weight during covid (like 40 lbs – I’m now 5’4″ and almost 200 lbs) and I’m having so much anxiety about returning to the office. I am starting a new job and I feel like all of my coworkers are just going to have their first impression of me as fat and incompetent. I don’t mean any offense to anyone out there at a heavier weight, but I think studies (and lots and lots of anecdata) have shown that people tend to judge heavier women as less competent. It doesn’t help that I’m leaving my last firm as a junior associate, so I already feel like people are going to be looking for something wrong with me. How do I get over this anxiety?
On a related note, does anyone have recommendations for how they felt more comfortable dressing after lots of weight gain? Also would love to hear any styles that make people feel put together at a heavier weight. I am an apple shape (so lots of weight in my tummy, no waistline, broad shoulders), if any fellow apples have anything in particular they’d recommend.

If you have this much of a complex about your weight and it affecting how people perceive you, how did you gain 40 lbs in the first place?
As for how you get over the anxiety? Therapy is a good place to start. Will probably help with some other things too.

This is in no way helpful.

OP here – glad someone else said it. XD
Is that person seriously asking how people gain weight who don’t want to gain weight? As though everyone who gains weight is super cool with it? Going to go tell the $80 billion dollar weight loss industry to wrap things up; we’re all good.

Jeebus. I wonder if you display this level of meanness and lack of empathy in your off-line life, because you just made it clear that OP is not the one most in need of therapy.

I am a bit taller and a bit heavier, so probably around the same size. For clothes, I would go to a Talbots store that carries petites and plus sizes and spend a few hours trying on styles. I can wear both misses and plus depending on the cut, which is why it’s worth trying on multiple sizes. Talbots often has more colours than what they carry in the store, so if you find something you like, look online. They have a suiting section online as well, but not in all the stores.
I think the most important thing is to buy clothes that fit and have them tailored if necessary. Don’t buy too big thinking you are hiding your weight or too small thinking you are going to diet into them.
I have been about the same size for years and understand the data you are referring to, but that has not been my experience.

Thank you for all of this!

I don’t have a ton of advice for you but as a similarly shaped woman I’ve found ponte sheath dresses to be my friend. Pants are the worst for my apple-shaped self lol. Also, new lipstick – even in a favorite old shade, a pedicure (I know it’ll be hidden in your shoes), maybe an eyebrow-threading or a trim and some rocking haircolor that you love all can do wonders for how you feel.
Also, I think people will know that you got this job because you were the BEST candidate for it! They’ll be looking forward to getting to know you and finding out your ROCK STAR capabilities and probably super grateful somebody is coming in to fill a vacancy. You will be welcomed, and anybody who’s had to shoulder unwanted extra duties will be thrilled to be making them your responsibility now.
You’ve got this. You left as a junior associate and are MOVING UP in this world! Have half the confidence of a mediocre white man and go slay this. Then report back. Know that we are cheering you on from the internet!

Haha, thank you for all of this!

Big hugs! Also, I just wanted to add that your colleagues are probably going to be so distracted by the newness of coming into the office/lifting off quarantine that new shiny objects are going to just blend into the newness of everything in general.

Good point! Thanks. :)

Does anyone use an iPad as a second screen for their Mac? I tried buying a portable monitor and my computer refuses to acknowledge it, but Sidecar (the built in utility for using iPad as a second screen) seems foolproof. My worst WFH habit is Citrixing in on my tiny laptop screen in bed, rather than using the dual monitors and desk ten feet away from me…. I will also happily hear any other excuses I can use to justify buying myself an iPad and Apple Pencil.

I like to take handwritten digital notes and mark up documents with the pencil/iPad combo.

My office bought me an iPad and related gadgets early in the pandemic and it’s awesome. Go for it.
