  1. Looking for recs for New Zealand in Jan!

I’m super lucky to be able to go visit good friends in New Zealand thanks to credit card points. They have young kids who will be on school break, and I’ll be bringing my 1st grader. We’ll be there for 2 weeks and while I’m sure we’ll spend a fair bit of time with them, I also want to plan to do some things on our own so everyone has their own space. (I would prefer not to drive there for safety reasons, with potentially cranky kid in the backseat and on the opposite side of the road…)

Any particular things you’d recommend? We are pretty low-key travelers, I prefer to get a more local feel of the place, especially parks and such, rather than packing a hefty itinerary into one day. While I love being outside, we’ll have limited space for hiking boots etc and so will plan to have sneakers be the most athletic type footwear we’ll bring.

Thanks in advance for your awesome recs!

    1. Oops, I forgot to mention that we’re starting out in Auckland and I realize that 2 weeks is not a lot of time to see both North and South Island, but would appreciate any tips from people who have managed to do both. Thanks!

    2. I loved New Zealand! On the North Island, my favorite things were Hobbiton and the glow worm caves in Waitomo. Waitomo is definitely a place you can wander around the parks and see the glowworms, but you would need to drive. I also think your kid would get a HUGE kick out of the mud pots and geysers in Rotorua. There are a lot of options for attending cultural performances there as well. On the South Island, I did an organized trip in Abel Tasman National Park where a bus picked me up at my hostel, then we kayaked, got out of the kayaks and hiked, and then a boat picked us up at the end of the hike and took us back to the bus. A great way to see the park in a lot of different ways. I also liked hiking on the glaciers (Franz Joseph and Fox), and renting a bike in Nelson.

  2. I do not know about New Zealand, but I was in Australia about 20 years ago with my family and the young men there were very attentive to me and Rosa?
