Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. Rick Owens is becoming one of my favorites for splurge Mondays, if only because his mix of sophisticated cool and professionalism feels so spot on. It’s clothes for grownups, not Gossip Girls or grandmas, and I really like it. This tulle and twill blazer looks amazing, and of course I love that it’s 50% off at the Outnet. (Note that Barney’s has a very similar one at full price.) It was $1860, but is now $930. Rick Owens Tulle-Trimmed Twill Blazer Here's a lower-priced option. Rick Owens
OK, so I’m wearing 100% Lands End today, but if I were rich and/or a celebrity, I would want to go to a Rick Owens fashion show. The clips I’ve seen from them are amazing. I’m not sure I’d ever have the life *needing* his clothes and I’m pretty sure I can’t get them in my city, but I do like him and his work and I love his presentation.
Sydney Bristow
Narciso Rodriguez is that designer for me.
Although my dream show to attend would be Chanel couture. Or any of the couture shows, really.

Max Mara (and Marina Rinaldi) for me.
Wedge replacement
Can anyone recommend some 2″ (or thereabouts) wedges where the wedge part is black patent? The shoe can be regular black leather (or patent). And it can’t be from CH or TB. Also trying to avoid the <$100 ones on Zappos (but not wanting an ultra-splurge, either). Thanks!
mascot
Did you look at DSW? My wedges always get heel scuffs which is a pain to repair in patent IME. That may explain why it is hard to find an all patent wedge. I had a pair of brown Nickels wedges a while back.
lslsls
These Nine West ones look like they fit the bill, although I can’t tell about the heel from the picture. The nude seems to show that the patent upper has a patent wedge, but it’s probably worthwhile to ask their customer service. http://www.ninewest.com/Ispy-Wedge-Heels/737436935919,default,pd.html?variantColor=JJ169A0_1&q=wedge
New Tampanian
I have these. They are very comfortable. Super cute. I wear them when I have events outside for work and end up walking about 5 miles a day in them during that time. You’ll need to break them in a little but not too much.
New Tampanian
Oh,… heel is not black patent on the plain black ones. Not sure if there are black patent ones.
L in DC
I have two pairs of these and love them.
K
I just got these last week and they have some patent, but they’re probably not what you’re looking for:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00S0JPP2Q?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00
They’re really comfortable, though
Amy H.
I have the Nine West Mela in black patent, and the wedge heel is black patent as well. They are about 2″ on the heel. If 9W doesn’t have them on their own site, Amazon or Zappos likely will.
Applying as an adjunct?
Has anybody ever applied to teach courses adjunct? I am not a JD, but have my master’s degree in my field. I have about 5 years of work experience. I enjoy teaching others and would like to add a component of that to my career, but have no interest in doing it full time.
Is this crazy? Is it worth applying to one of the local community colleges (NoVa/DC) or the extension school of my alma mater?
Ellen
Yay! Pricey Monday’s! I love pricey Monday’s and this Rick Owen’s Blazer! It is VERY styleish, and short in the rear so I fear that it will call to much attention to my tuchus. FOOEY!
The manageing partner is haveing a holiday party at his house in the Hamton’s next month, and we are all invited. I told him it will be VERY cold out there so why not have it HERE or at his house. He said that he will have it catered and did NOT want to have his carpet stained again — Mason dropped a glass of red wine and some chopped liver onto that carpet, but he is not here, but he is worried that Lynn will bring him and he is VERY clumsy.
As for the OP, I am considereing applying to teach law as an ADJUNCT this spring at NYU and Fordam law school’s. The judge gradueated from NYU and the manageing partner from Fordam, so they said they could get me in. I am NOT sure which one I would rather teach at–neither are close to where I live and there are NO law school’s near by. FOOEY! I would love to teach WC law, but they do NOT have a class in it. The Judge said I could teach Civil Procedure, since I am always litigeating , and the managing partner throught I would do well teaching a course in Tort’s, since I deal with PI matters all the time. I will have to see who give’s me a better offer. I do NOT want to teach to late at night b/c I have to get home and the peeople on the subway after 8 get sleezey ERY quickley after 8pm.
Anyway, I ate the whole Apple pie mom made for me, but it is OK b/c it is Thank’sgiving week, and we are all allowed 5 holiday pound’s she says. YAY!!!!!
adjuncts
No, not crazy. It depends where you live and your field, but these jobs can be quite competitive and they pay terribly for the number of hours it takes to teach and do the prep/grading. But if you have the time… why not try?
My brother knows a lot of people doing this. What an abusive (poorly paid..) system for the teachers.
Anonymous
I highly recommend that you speak to other adjuncts at the school before accepting any of these positions. I agree with adjuncts that they are an insane number of hours for terrible pay. My personal experience is that I love teaching, but I it has been extremely challenging to make it work with my real job, which also requires time outside regular business hours.
rakma
What are you hoping to get out of the experience? If it’s anything other than teaching experience, I’d probably look for another path.
I’m an adjunct for a course within my field, and the course I teach is an intro. There is not a department for the course I teach, so with every restructuring, I get a new administrator, standards, etc. I enjoy the teaching, so I continue to do it, but it is a lot of unpaid (or low paid, if you divide my salary per credit into actual hours), thankless work.
Talking to someone with in the institution you hope to work for would be a great idea before applying.
JP
I’m a full time faculty member in a department that employs a lot of adjuncts with direct practice experience looking to teach a class or two (and few adjuncts who are recent PhDs looking for full-time work). The pay is not great for the number of hours you put in, but my colleagues who have come back to the classroom to adjunct while workign full-time in the field have had really positive experiences. It makes a big difference for your time investment whether you’ll be handed a syllabus and slides, or whether you’d have to generate them yourself.
Sarabeth
What is your field, roughly? German history (in major metro area) = they are probably going to be able to hire someone with a Ph.D. Math or Composition, your chances are better. Something practical like nursing, they move towards excellent.
All the stuff about terrible pay for lots of work is true, although it also does vary somewhat by field.

When I reach out to a recruiter for a particular company listed in my school’s career services directory, how do I address that person? First name? Title and last name?
mascot
Address for letter: Full Name, Title
Salutation: Mr/Ms Last name
Once you have corresponded/ talked with them a few times, you may be able to switch to first names. Follow their lead here.

Same for email, I’m assuming? And if it’s a woman and I don’t know anything else about her, I call her Ms. right?
Anonymous
Yes.
Blueberries
Yes, Ms., unless Dr./Prof./some other title. Even if you know marital status, don’t use Mrs. or Miss professionally unless someone tells you that’s what they prefer.
mascot
Yes, use Ms. in business correspondence. Save the Miss/Mrs. distinctions for social settings.
anon
Women should always be addressed as Ms. in a professional context– never Mrs. or Miss.
lost academic
I need a polite way to tell my new boss that. He keeps putting Mrs. on proposals. It irks me. (Also I don’t use my married name and haven’t changed it so it’s not even right.) I shouldn’t care, mostly because I doubt anyone even notices, but it makes me grind my teeth briefly every time I see it…
Aunt Jamesina
Lost academic, I think a neutral “actually, I go by Ms. Thanks!” is just fine. Do whatever you would do if he were misspelling your name or using the wrong nickname.
anonymous
Thanks all. And do I close the email with first and last name?
Ellen
Of course you do. You are NOT on a frist name basis with them! You need to get assertive and think b/f you come up with these question’s. The HIVE is here for you, but you have to learn to think for yourselves. YAY!!!!
Fancy Shoes
I purchased my first pair of designer shoes over the weekend – Ferragamo flats – but now I’m in a panic that wearing them will ruin them. I’m mostly worried about the soles — is there anything I should do before I wear them to make them last longer? With heels, I’ve sometimes had a rubber sole put on, but that seems trickier with a flat where the difference in height/thickness could be more significant. Ladies, any advice?
Wedge replacement
The Varas? Those seem to wear like iron, especially in patent leather. No idea re the Varinas.

Those might be hard to reheel, so I’d had heel taps of you are the sort who replaces heels / taps on your other shoes.
shoes
I wouldn’t do anything. For my similar shoes, I just bring them to the cobbler once I start wearing the heels down to have them replaced. Occasionally I will touch up the leather or clean them myself if they are the common colors, but the cobbler can do that as well for odd colors.
Did you really pay that much for those flats?
Cat
Your last sentence was uncalled for. It sounds like my judgy MIL.
shoes
It’s a fair enough question.
Cat
But why are you asking? It sounds like you don’t think they’re worth $600. Which is a perfectly fine opinion to have – people have different budgets, priorities, and occasionally-irrational loves or hates of particular pieces of clothing – but the OP wasn’t asking for advice on whether or not to buy them.
shoes
Threads often take tangents that can be relevant and useful discussions for other posters…. not just the OP.
Your responses are coming across as quite aggressive and judge-y to me. But hey, that’s the internet.
I have several pairs of Ferragamo flats. While they are comfortable and well made, in my opinion they are not worth that high price. It is also true that the vast majority of readers cannot afford them anyway, so a little more info on the shoes and their cost in relation to how to maintain them is relevant to those who click on the shoes and wonder….. whaat?!
There are often discussions of various buckets/quality of clothing and footwear. Often people tout buying fewer items of higher quality because they last longer. For shoes that can be work horses, I generally recommend a slightly higher bucket….. But even with meticulous maintenance I would recommend against paying such a price for these shoes. Particularly as the OP gives off the impression that this is quite a splurge for her.
Always scour ebay, consignment stores though for these. Then it is a great deal.
Mary
Would be a fair question if it was coming from a truly open-minded place. Doesn’t sound like it is. I’m with Cat and I am sad that you are alienating readers – or at least three! – this morning.
shoes
We’re all different. Hope you guys can relax a little. This is just a fashion blog….
None of us are truly open-minded. We all come with prejudices based on our experiences. Just sharing my experience.
OP
Thanks for the advice everyone! I’ll probably just wear and enjoy them for now but keep an eye on the heels and soles.
Shoes, I do appreciate your input on the shoe care. Your input on the pricing/worth to you wasn’t necessary, but you’re free to comment as you like. It so happens that I did not pay full price, but I would have – I love the shoes, they fill a need for me, and are well within my budget. I would suggest that, if you are truly interested in an actual discussion on such topics, you begin a fresh thread with your inquiries; that would likely reduce the risk that your comments are taken the wrong way.
Anne
I’ve had many pairs of Ferragamos, but they’ve gotten too expensive for me now. But, I always kept them in their boxes, on cedar shoe trees, used a god quality cream polish, and had heels and tips replaced at the first sign of wear. Some lasted ten years.
Anonymous
They can still do a rubber sole on flats. But as you probably know from having it done on heels, they need to grind down the surface of the original sole to adhere the new rubber sole. This happens naturally if you wear the shoes for a while before taking them in, but if you take in brand new shoes they’ll sand it down. Some people think they should take in shoes in pristine condition before they ever get worn down, but there’s no reason to do so–wear then and enjoy them, and then take them in! The only reason to take them in at the outset is if the sole is leather and you have mobility issues where it could be a slip hazard.
Anon
I’d suggest getting rubber soles. I’ve worn mine in the rain once, and the leather soles shrank and came apart from the top of the shoes. Luckily my cobbler was able to fix that, but I won’t be buying Ferragamo flats again.
what are you thankful for?
Let’s start Monday off on a positive note:
What is one thing you’re thankful for?
I am thankful that I have beaten a chronic illness over the last 18 months, and am healthy enough to be back at the gym.
Anonymous
I am thankful that I have a family that loves me, supports me, and will do both of these things no matter what. Too often that doesn’t happen.
Cb
I’m thankful for a strong support network during a stressful time and coming home after a working weekend to a spotless house.
JJ
Love this idea. Thankful that I have a career I enjoy and fulfills me, a healthy family, a supportive spouse that loves me, and my health. I spent yesterday thinking about how lucky and blessed I am and how I need to remember that more often when life’s annoyances pop up.
Anon
I am thankful for my husband. Our ten year anniversary falls on Thanksgiving this year, which is so awesome. I would not have my beautiful children or my great career if it were not for him and his support. He is a true partner in every sense and I am so grateful for him and the life we have created together.
OP
happy anniversary! DH and I celebrated 10 years together this summer too. Our last 2 years have been far and away better than any of our previous. Congratulations, and here’s to many many more!
emeralds
I’m thankful that my life is full of wonderful people, from my coworkers who are helping me move some furniture, to my parents (even though they drive me nuts sometimes), to the treasured friends I’ve known for years, to my thoughtful, considerate, and dead s*xy boyfriend.
DisenchantedinDC
How nice!
I was lifting this morning, and this thought kind of crossed my mind because I was in a class with one of my BFFs, whose family I will be spending Thanksgiving with. And I thought how every different my life was a few years ago, and that I never could have imagined finding the amazing group and community of people to be part of that I did. They really are like a family. And I am so amazingly grateful for that.
Just curious...
Though there are probably dozens of DC gyms with a Monday morning lifting class, the idea that I might be sharing mine with another reader makes me smile! Trying to think of a way to ask without giving away too much info….does your instructor’s last name start with an “S”?
And, of course, it may be too late to be asking :)
DisenchantedinDC
No, it doesn’t, but solidarity fist bump for making it to the gym in the morning! Even if we aren’t in the same room, I think all the 6 am’ers share a common bond. :-)
brokentoe
This year I’m most thankful for Prozac. It catapulted me out of a very dark place and I will never again think depression is something you can “just snap out of.”
KateMiddletown
Thanks for this reminder, especially during the holidays, to be patient with ourselves and our relatives who might be dealing with hidden afflictions.
Rogue Banker
This is an awesome thread. High five to you. :)
Thankful I’m having a good hair and skin day at the same time. Thankful for a wonderful, caring , hard-working boyfriend, even though we are living in different states due to work. Thankful I’ve got time off coming up this week, and thankful that I’m able to spend the holiday with family this year. Thankful that my family is mostly in good health (multiple deaths in friends’/coworkers’ families this month). Thankful for warm sweaters and hot chocolate on cold mornings.
Anonymous
I’m thankful that my husband, parents and dog are all healthy and that we will be together in our new home for Thanksgiving.

Congrats on overcoming your illness – not being able to exercise (when you want to) is so difficult!
I am thankful for having a supportive family, two wonderful dogs, and a relatively healthy and easy (so far) pregnancy.
New Tampanian
Yay! Congrats on beating the illness!
I am thankful for a job that I absolutely love. Thankful to live in a place where I won’t be buried under 5 feet of snow again. And super thankful for coffee. Because it’s Monday.
lawsuited
I’m thankful that I’ll soon be on a plane to a sunny part of Africa, introducing my husband (of 6 years!) to my extended family for the first time and showing him the places I grew up. It’s been over 7 years since I was last in my home country because I’ve been working at firms where it was impossible to get the time off necessary for a trip like this. It feels like a beautiful, surreal dream come true.
I’m so grateful!
Ellen
I am thankful for haveing a decent job in NYC where I am considered a valueable member of the law firm where my idea’s are respected and I am paid a liveing wage so that I can suport my self. YAY!! I started out from VERY humbel beginings but thru the hard work of my dad, have become a partner in a NYC law firm (the first in my family). Now all I need is a HUSBAND and baby, and I will be all set! DOUBEL YAY to the HIVE for your unflaggeing support!!!
anon
So, I really never see or talk to my in-laws. They’re really not my favorite people for some excellent reasons, but they don’t know that so we get along fairly well. DH is not very fond of his family for the same excellent reasons, which I think they may have caught on to more. He does talk to them once a week on the phone for maybe 20 minutes. I see them maybe twice a year when they drive through here on the way to seeing other relatives, and we go out to dinner.
Should I care that we never talk and I hardly ever see them?Is there some reason I’m not thinking of that I should make overtures? DH has little interest in interacting with them, and I would only care about it if he did. We don’t/won’t have kids, so it’s not like anyone’s missing out on that. Thoughts?
Anonymous
The only reason I would ever feel a desire to have more contact with my in-laws would be if my husband was sad about not seeing them more and/or if we had kids and I wanted them to have a better relationship with their grandparents. Because neither of these things apply, I don’t see any reason to reach out to them.
anon
whoa, this is totally not where I intended to post this. Sorry guys!
Senior Attorney
One thing? If I have to pick among my multitude of blessings it would have to be my lovely Gentleman Friend. He is so kind and lovely in every way that I pinch myself every day to make sure it’s not all a dream. After 15 years of marriage to an evil narcissist, being with him really is like a dream come true!
KateMiddletown
I am thankful for your recountings of this relationship!

Great thread.
I’m thankful for my mental health. So many years I struggled and the last few years (thanks to a great therapist and medication), I finally feel okay and healthy.
Also, my amazing husband, fluffy dog, and a job that I enjoy most of the time. And of course, a family (even if they are a five hour flight away).
CZR
Great thread. It’s so nice to read these responses. I’m grateful for my health, after a scare earlier this year, for my family, and for a chance to try something new at work and see where it takes me.
Due in December
Only one thing? My kind, patient, supportive, s*xy husband.
Also, for having two steady jobs in the family, health insurance, and a mostly healthy pregnancy. And for my adorable dog.
Coach Laura
I’m thankful for nice commenters on this s!te, like the OP who posted this question. :)
I’m thankful for my health and that of my kids and the relative good health of my relatives (even if they’re getting old). I’m grateful for food on the table and a roof over our heads. I’m happy to have good friends and family.
Pep
I’m over 50, and I’m grateful that I still have my parents and that they remain healthy and active. Most of my friends have lost at least one parent by now. DBF and my BFF have lost both.
I’m grateful for my sweet dog (G), who I adopted in February. I had lost my previous dog (P) the summer before, and had had seven dogless months before she entered my life. She didn’t take P’s spot, but has created her own.
I’m also grateful for good health, which must be genetic because I’m not the most conscientious about it.
KinCA
I’m cheating by not choosing just one person, but I’m thankful for the amazing people in my life: my husband, my mom, and my best friends. I have no idea how I convinced such wonderful people to love me but I am so glad that they do.
EB0220
*Posting on c*rette moms as well* Can anyone recommend a camisole that is mostly cotton and works for someone with a long torso? I prefer a built-in bra of some sort but not 100% required. I am still wearing my nursing bras, despite having weaned a month ago, because they became such an integral part of my wardrobe. I need to replace them!
EB0220
Oops, still wearing my nursing *camis*…
cami
One of the places I’ve found the longest tanks is the teen stores…We have a Rugged, and while I’m not tall in the torso, the tanks/camis come down past my cr*tch, and most have adjustable straps. They’re dirt cheap & a million colors too.
Runner 5
Seconding teen stores – in my case H&M. Their jersey basics are often made with organic cotton, which is nice.
Cat
Also long-waisted; the JCrew favorite tank (from 3 years ago, but it still looks long on the s*te) actually reaches to my hipbones.
(Former) Clueless Summer
Old Navy shelf bra camis! I love these – cheap, some % cotton. They now make them really long – I preffered the old style, but you’ll likely like them now.
marketingchic
Old Navy is my recommendation too. I order them in tall.
KateMiddletown
I am ashamed to admit my favorite sleep tank is still my Glamour Mom nursing tank from … 5 years ago. Anyone have a cami recommendation with a supportive shelf-bra?

I would like to buy my boyfriend some nice pajama pants as part of his Christmas gift, but I am out of my realm on figuring out where to buy them. I’m looking more for comfort, but I would also like some that will hold up for a while. Are there any suggestions on brands I should look at?
Mrs. Jones
Land’s End has nice pj pants.
PJ
Ralph Lauren has nice pj pants as well.
Shopaholic
These are a bit expensive but you can find them on sale.. Armani has these amazing soft pants that my ex boyfriend used to love (and I would steal them whenever I could). They are super comfy and durable.
AIMS
I buy Mr. AIMS pajamas from Brooks Bros., usually on sale so price is $49 and under. Quality is great and he loves them. Was never a guy who was into pajamas before but it’s become a semi-tradition now. Only word of caution is they’ve lately seem to run a size large.
Pamplemousse
Thank you all for the suggestions!
KateMiddletown
Do the BB pants tend to be tall? I have a skinny/tall dude on my hands and struggle w/ the PJs.

I need all new bras since mine are worn out and I realized that I’m wearing the wrong size. Is there any reason I shouldn’t just get bras from Target or Wal-Mart? I’ve been measured and I read up on how I should select a bra for fit, so I don’t think I need further help on that front. I should be a 32D if that makes any difference.
Anonymous
I love Target for everything else, but the br*s have never worked for me. I’m a tad smaller, but similar band size and they’ve never gotten it right / had enough stock / etc. I think they do vanilla sizes (36B) well, but not my size.
Anonymous
FWIW, I’d get one of the best bra you can where you are measured at the place as well. You should know what great feels like. Then try to bargain shop (for me, that’s the NAS, not Target (although I get sports bras there and only there)) and see how that compares.
For me, with a small band, Nordstrom has the best selection (my city’s bra specialty place, does better in larger sizes and in small band sizes, the straps were always slipping off my shoulders). They were right on the size, but not quite with the inventory (Calvin Klein and others at Nordstrom worked very well; surprisingly, not others that are quite popular and not all 32C bras are alike).
KateMiddletown
+1. I buy a nude and a black of the same brand at NAS every year and one or two colors on clearance as I see them. I skimp on plenty of things in my wardrobe, but bras are not one of them.
rory
I recently was measured at Nordstrom and my size was dramatically different than what I thought/had been wearing, even though I was measured a few years ago, and haven’t really gained any weight. I would get fitted at a nicer place, and buy additional bras as needed at Target, etc. For my size, I don’t think Target can “lift me up” the way I want, but YMMV.
Famouscait
I buy all my bras at Kohls. Huge selection, good prices.
KT
THIS. I hate Kohls in general, but for bras they are the best
Anonymous
Target doesn’t stock 32 bands in the stores, so I would imagine it would be impossible to buy one there if you want to try them on It’s bizarre because it’s a common size, but oh well.
Susie
Mine does. Or at least used to, it’s been a while since I’ve looked.
br@
You will have a hard time finding supportive 32D bras at target or walmart. If you want mainstream, you can actually find decent 32D bras at VS, but if you’re really really NOT a 32D (don’t dare add numbers to the measurement that you get for your band size), then VS isn’t going to cut it either.
Best bets for online bras in small band/large cup:
herroom dot com
figleaves dot com
barenecessities dot com
titlenine dot com
Good brands to try: Wacoal, Freya, Panache, Natori, Betsey Johnson, Le Mystere
TJMaxx/Ross/Marshalls sometimes get those odd sizes in better brands, so you may want to try there, too.
Anonymous
VS must have changed their selection since I last shopped there–I’m a 32C and could never find anything in store. Then they’d try to tell me 34B was my “sister size” because they carry loads of 34B, even though that concept is completely made up just so they can sell you something. A 34B on me means the band is falling down and my chest is squeezing out over the top. I’m happy to hear they’ve broadened their size selection!
Anonymous
I’ve had the same problem, historically, seems like all their 32C bras are either neutral (black, beige, or white) or super ugly; finding something cute in that size is like an easter egg hunt. I eventually gave up on getting my 32C bras in store, unless I *wanted* a beige bra to wear under lightly colored tops, and started ordering my bras online because I can get nearly any style in that size from the website.
An associate told me the same thing, too, that I should try on a 34B because it’s practically the same thing. No? A bigger band size isn’t going to compensate for a smaller cup size, that’s not how it works.
KateMiddletown
I worked at VS in college and can testify that no one there knows what they’re talking about.
PolyD
32D is not quite the unicorn size it once was, but can still be tricky.
I have some VS bras in 32D that I like very much. Also, Gap’s underwear line sells 32Ds, I have a couple of those and like them a lot, too.
I recently thought about upgrading and went to Soma. Their bras are more expensive (~$55 vs. around $35 – $40 for VS or Gap), but not completely unreasonable.
tesyaa
I love, love my Target bras, which have held up 1000% times better than the pricey Wacoals I bought. But I wear 34A there. (Target’s A cups are more like AA, which works for me).
lslsls
I’m a 32D too, VS, Maidenform, and Calvin Klein have the best fit for me. CK has a good t-shirt bra that I wear daily, I suggest you start there. If you added, Wacoal makes good 30Ds and 32Cs to try as well.
Diana Barry
I am a 32D. There is a big difference between the way my b**bs look in cheap stuff vs my Nordstrom ones (I think it is called the ‘feathers’ one, can’t remember who makes it). Even my sp*nx ones have stretched out now!
Scarlett
Natori makes the feathers line. Another D here & *love* those.

I’m a 30D and I remember something funny about the sizing of feathers. Like you had to order up (in cup fize)? At any rate, the CK and Betsey Johnson (and I’m not otherwise a Betsey Johnson girl at all) were fine on the first order (esp. for t-shirt bras).
Rogue Banker
For the love of all things holy get fitted at an actual lingerie shop (read: not VS). I ended up being two band sizes lower and three cup sizes up than what I “measured”, but it helps SO MUCH to get a bra that actually fits.
Jordan
Not to be too dramatic but I switched to Calvin Klein Tshirt bras (not sure the exact name) from Victoria’s secret and it was not much different in price but so much more comfortable. For those two or three I go to Nordies. For all else, It’s target or vicki’s if I have a gift card or something.

Hmm, I’m not a fan of flannel sheets myself (too tangly) so I don’t have a recommendation for those specifically, but we were given an amazing set of sheets by Brooklinen for our wedding that I love. It’s like an everlane/ warby Parker for sheets. I want another set so I don’t get sad on laundry day. As a gift they were cool too – they came in a reasonable size box without extra packaging.

Check out the Pinzon heavyweight flannel sheets on Amazon. They are the softest, warmest sheets I’ve ever owned.

Nordie's personal shopper - for men?
Has anyone used a Nordstrom personal shopper for a man’s wardrobe? Specifically, can they help gauge the proper fit of clothing? My husband looks great in business wear (coat, suit, dress shirt, etc.) but I swear his casual clothes are all the wrong sizes, in addition to looking just… sloppy. I think we need professional help, if they can do that sort of thing. Alternatively, is there anything like Stitch fix for men? Nordie’s would be a special day-trip for us, so if there’s something we could do online, that would also be appealing.
LawDawg
On Saturday, my DH used a personal shopper in the men’s department for the first stime. He was overwhelmed when he first walked in the dressing room and saw the huge selection, but just like with the women’s, he tried on and bought things he never would have picked out for himself. He is not a clothes horse (usually buys from LL Bean, Cabella’s, Lands End, etc.). This upgraded his wardrobe and got him some things that fit much better.
DisenchantedinDC
Yes!! Trunk Club, by Nordstrom, is like StitchFix for men. (they also offer it for women now, but it started as a guy thing) Several of my guy friends love it.
L in DC
+1 for Trunk Club. I have a friend who recently used it for casual clothes and he looks great.
Care
DH used Trunk Club several times. It was very nice, but the price point was much higher than Stitch Fix. He liked the more professional clothes he got from it, but couldn’t justify it for many more casual things (he might have kept a pair of shorts and a tshirt). He’s really hard on clothes though and doesn’t think to change out of nice casual into cheap casual when doing something messy.
If you were going to go to a personal shopper anyway, it may be a good option. It also kind of depends on how quickly he wants to fill up his wardrobe. You could be done after one trip with a personal shopper, but Trunk Club boxes might take a few months.
DisenchantedinDC
Yes, price point is definitely more like shopping at Nordstrom, which is the parent company. Sorry if that wasn’t clear!
Anonymous
My husband loves it. Very expensive but he ends up with fewer nicer things that he loves. He’s promised me to have them NEVER send him t-shirts again bc he ends up liking and keeping them and they are like 80$, when the $20 Banana ones are just as good. For everything else, they are great.
Anonymous
My husband has used a Nordstroms personal shopper. It was for work clothes, but he left with a lot of good basics that he loved and fit him well (his fit is also often off!) and I see no reason why they couldn’t have the same result for casual clothing. The stylist did a great job of showing him how to mix and match the items. He also got him into alternations, which my husband wouldn’t have done on his own. My very much not a clothes horse husband started off very nervous but ended feeling confident. He’s been really happy to always have a stylish outfit ready to go.
FWIW, it was hard for him to pay so much at once, but it was helpful to point out how much it would equate to monthly (ie – $600 now = $50/month). Since he really hardly ever shops, it’s pretty accurate.

Looking for gift suggestions for a few people in my life… any thoughts appreciated!
My mom is 63, retired, and single… she doesn’t really need any gadgets and I generally steer clear of buying her clothes since we have very different tastes. She is not particularly domestic. I know this is fairly vague, but does anyone have any genius ideas? Budget is around $150-200.
I already got some stocking stuffers for my boyfriend (who is 27), and I’m thinking about getting him a nice weekender bag since currently he uses a tiny, impractical duffel bag and I think he could use an upgrade. Any ideas on that front? For the weekender, I’d like to spend less than $150 and then possibly supplement with another gift in the ~$100 range. Thoughts? I got him an amazon echo for his birthday, so I want to stay away from more gadgets.
I also need a gift for my bf’s 15 year old brother. Last year I got him some nike dri fit shirts. He doesn’t seem to ever want anything, so he just asks for things he needs, but I’d rather get him something fun. but I don’t really want to spend more than ~$40.
I also need a gift for my bf’s older brother (29), budget is more like $30. And need something for his grandmother too….
Speaking of all this, do any of you ever feel like you have to spend way more on your SO’s family’s gifts than your SO spends on your family, because of the relative sizes? My bf is one of 5, plus his mom and grandmom, whereas it’s just me and my mom that my bf has to worry about buying gifts for. I love buying gifts but sometimes it’s just too much!
TIA!
Cb
We buy for my mom and dad and then 10 people on my husband’s side. Trying to curtail it after this year but an uphill battle.
Re. weekender – I bought one recently at the Van Huesen outlet. They had an even nicer one at the Bass Outlet but was looking for something not too expensive. Everlane may be a good option as well.
Small gifts…have you seen those cool little lenses that fit on your phone?

I was also going to recommend the Van Heusen outlet. They have a great selection and I was eyeing one there for my husband.

Seconding the Everlane weekender recommendation.

I’m getting my mom a kindle, which seems like its in your budget for your mom. I don’t know if you’d consider that a gadget.
I’d get the 15 y/o an Amazon or iTunes gift card. I think gift cards are good for teenagers because their tastes change so quickly and unlike adults with salaries they can’t just buy themselves whatever they want, so they really appreciate gift cards.
anon
I like the gift card idea– I think I’ll go with that (but maybe to a sporting goods store, since he’s obsessed with sports).
My mom has an ipad, kindle, MacBook, apple tv, smart phone already, and barely knows what to do with it all (and I gave her most of that so I’m really running out of gadgets to buy her…)

Last year, we bought my teenage nephew giftcards for places he could take his girlfriend on dates. He/they loved it!

I hear you on the buying gifts for a big family – I have 4 siblings and DH is an only child. We deal with it by having higher gift budgets for his parents than we have for my parents and siblings, which accords with everyone’s expectations anyway. (I.e. DH’s parents spend way more on us and each other because they are only buying for a few people, whereas in my family, everyone is buying for 10 people, so no one expects blow-out gifts.)
For your mom, I recommend luxurious “lounge clothes (which are not as “similar tastes” dependant) like slippers, a cashmere wrap, DKNY pyjamas, perhaps paired with some l’occitane hand or foot cream and a special selection of teas (if she drinks tea, but coffee or red wine or scotch or whatever if she doesn’t).
RJ
Everlane has nice weekender bags. I have had one for a few years, it holds up great. Plain and simple.
SC
I hear you on buying gifts for a SO’s large family. Even after going to a Secret Santa among his siblings and their spouses on one side of the family, we buy gifts for 9 adults and 3 children in his family. I’m an only child, so on my side, we just buy for my parents and, for the first time this year, a young cousin. I also sometimes resent that the “work” of choosing and wrapping gifts for his family seems to fall on me. After many years, I buy the gifts for the kids and the people I have ideas for and let DH choose what to buy the other family members (usually wine, purchased on Christmas Eve).
Anonymous
I can relate, too! DH’s family has three times as many people as mine!
We don’t see my family and his family together, so we resigned to shopping differently for each side. We give my side a gift to each adult (~$30) and to each niece/nephew (~$20). On his side, we gift his parents but not siblings or adult niece/nephew (have your own child = adult), and the multitude of nieces/nephews get a book (reciprocated by the other families). Most years, adult couples exchange homemade gifts, such as jam or jerky. As a quirk, sister/SIL’s exchange a bar of chocolate, lol.
Even after many years of this, I still have twinges of feeling that I’m being ‘unfair’ but mainly we’re reciprocating what we receive from those who gift to us – which seems more appropriate (and less maddening).

Something fancy and crazy from Zingerman’s? My friend is a hot chocolate fiend so I am sending her two of their fancy hot chocolates and some cookies.

I don’t know if this would work for your family, but in my dad’s family (4 siblings), each couple would get their parents and one other couple (the parents drew names to assign) a nice gift and not get anything small for each other. They then all bought small gifts for the nieces/nephews. It’s still a lot of gifts and probably evens out price-wise, but it is more fun to get one nice gift than 4 inexpensive ones. I suggested that to DH’s extended family and we did it once. It didn’t work as well, but I think that’s because we don’t know each other as well and we did it by individuals instead of by couples (so each person bought a gift for one other person in the family).
Runner 5
For your mum, can you find some nice photos of you and her together and get them blown up/ framed?
For your BF’s younger brother, if he has an Xbox I’d get him a few months of the online subscription to it. Otherwise an Amaz n voucher.
Anonymous
For your mom — tickets to go to a show together? Or for a daytrip to someplace with beautiful gardens (like Longwood Gardens in PA) or to an art museum and a nice meal? We have had good luck gifting “outings” to a father in law who has everything (and who isn’t necessarily easy to get along with). Time spent together is far more valuable than another sweater . . .

What type of hostess gifts do you bring when you’re celebrating a holiday with your SO’s parents for the first time and staying with them for a couple days? Flowers?
Anon
I would probably either do wine, fancy desserts (cupcakes or chocolates), or a poinsettia or fallish-looking plant (or some combination of those items).
Sydney Bristow
How well do you know them? Wine is an appropriate choice for my in laws because they are really into it. I’ve brought them a bottle of a nicer wine from the area where I grew up, which went over really well.
I think when I met my in laws for the first time (and also stayed that weekend with them) I made them cookies based on my husband’s advice.
Belle
Not well, they are very quiet people. His mom likes her dog and reading and his dad likes Donald Trump and being retired . That’s all I’ve gotten out of them.
lsw
Might be a winner to bring a bone or treat for the dog – though check with your SO first in case she is very particular about what the dog eats.
DisenchantedinDC
Yes, definitely check, but many local butcher shops sell smoked bones, which even most picky doggie parents will allowed – no gluten or corn or anything in those!
TBK
We don’t allow smoked bones — too much risk of them splintering. Raw only.

No no no on smoked bones! Dogs should NEVER be given cooked bones for the reason TBK states.
Sydney Bristow
Flowers or something consumable sounds like a good option then.
Bee
Flowers are nice, a consumable if you know what they like (chocolates, cupcakes, fancy cheese, tea, coffee, etc.), or if you’re flying, festive hand towels or a trivet. You can of course bring a bottle of wine for sharing, but ime I’d stay away from alcohol as the gift.

Assuming the family celebrates Christmas, I’d give an Christmas ornament for the tree, particularly because you can buy it in advance and not worry about the availability of fresh flowers around the holidays. Every Christmas, my MIL points out the ornament I gave her the first time I met her.
Senior Attorney
+1 I would enjoy that way more than flowers or something to eat. (Not, perhaps, as much as a nice bottle of wine, but YMMV…)
Anonymous
Seems risky to me – they might have a theme for the tree you don’t know about and/or if they hate the ornament they may feel obligated to put it on the tree anyway. I would say flowers or a generic consumable is way safer. Less chance of being a huge hit maybe, but also much less chance of being a big miss.
Cat
I sent a big Wolfermans basket – it was a big hit because everyone was focused on the Thanksgiving meal, not so much on “right, we’re feeding people for a whole long weekend.”
SC
I like the idea of a consumable. In the past, I’ve made stuff that’s a family recipe/tradition from my family and brought it to my in-laws’, or whoever’s house I’m celebrating at. This works especially well if you have an appetizer or snack that can be served any time, such as a dip or coffee cake, so that you don’t have to worry about it competing with their traditional dishes.
Black Dress
Can anyone recommend a basic, casual, a-line black dress? I had cheap one from H&M that I like and I get a ton of mileage out of it, but i’m looking to get one that is slightly nicer. Wannabe Runner
Does anyone have any suggestions for cold-weather running gear? I’m not anything close to an elite runner, but I’m trying to commit to at least 3-4 miles, 3-4 times a week and I figure some new gear might help motivate me. I’ll mostly be running in the early morning outside, which will mean I’ll be running in the dark (so reflective and/or bright colors is good) and weather in the 20s starting soon. Also, I’m quite tall (5’11) so particularly pants in long lengths (34+ inch inseam) would be welcome. I suspect that I restrict myself to “tall” jackets or tops I’ll be setting myself up for disappointment, but I’m still holding out hope.
I’ve browsed through LL Bean, Athleta, Brooks, etc. online, and a lot of it looks cool, but it’s pretty expensive and I don’t have any sense of whether it will actually protect from this level of cold without making me sweat like crazy. I’m reluctant to drop that kind of money ($100-$150 for a jacket or vest, $75-100 for pants/running tights) without some serious vetting. So any recommendation are welcome.
Thanks in advance!
CHJ
I’d recommend looking at Marshalls/TJ Maxx — they often carry name brand gear (Nike, New Balance, Brooks, etc.) at a decent discount, especially if you aren’t particular about the color. It’s a good way to try out different types of gear (like tights) to see if the general concept works for you before investing more.
Also, this “what to wear” tool is really great:
http://www.runnersworld.com/what-to-wear
mascot
For safety- reflective vest and a flashing arm band.
Dress in layers. Running makes me feel 15-20 degrees warmer once I get going. Running gloves and warm headbands over the ears (hats may be too hot). I’ve had good luck with GapFit tights and I think that you can get lengths. Costco has really good workout gear, I’ve found. Also, try the outlets and discount stores like TJMaxx.
CountC
This. Layer, layer, layer. I don’t own any expensive cold weather running gear, but manage to run outside year-round without freezing my behind off. My gear is mostly C9 from Target and random bits from TJMaxx and the like. I have circulation issues, so I like mittens more than gloves for my hands. The ones that flip back are particularly useful if you find yourself getting hot. Also, thin wool socks are great. I am not tall, so I cannot help you with anything in that regard!
lsw
I am almost as tall as you and I have found that the Athleta tall running tights are REALLY good. They don’t drop in the crotch and they are actual tall sizes (not just long legs). I waited until some went on sale. I didn’t care about anything matching or what color so I just bought literally whatever first went on sale as a tall large.
LL Bean usually has 10-20% off coupons. Lands End has bigger sales and they recently came out with an athletic line, though I haven’t tried any of it.
I have long legs and waist to cr*tch but I’m not long from waist to shoulder so I don’t have great recs for jackets, unfortunately.
I started running last winter and I actually really preferred it – it was so peaceful! I bought silk glove liners and mostly wore those (sticking my hands in my pockets if needed), wore a hate, wore a neck fleece thingy, and wore a puffy jacket (it is not “athletic wear” but worked just fine for my purposes – it is waist length and fitted).
JJ
6′ tall here and I LOVE Athleta’s tall running tights and pants. Agreed that they actually lengthen everything, not just the inseam. For being outdoors in the 30s, I think the regular tights keep me warm enough. If it gets below that, I swear by the Polartec lined tights.
Nike’s half-zip pullovers are my favorite jackets. They’re not the warmest in the world, but they’re perfect with a base layer and vest.
Bonnie
I love Athleta running gear and always buy it off their sale section. I run so long as there is no ice on the ground (too many falls and a concussion). I prefer to layer so I can cool down as I warm up. For cold weather, I usually wear leggings, a tank, a long sleeved shirt with thumbholes, a running vest, gloves and a hat. It makes a huge difference to wear longer socks too.
Anonymous
I’m tall and the best things I’ve found are from Athleta, North Face, and Lululemon. They all fit a tall/athletic body, and if you are tall and skinny, Lululemon is pretty good for that even though I think they’ve done some questionable things. Those are the only places I find jackets that have wide enough shoulders and long enough arms. Those stores are expensive, but the fabrics that they use really are much nicer and let’s face it, once you own fancy workout gear you will start wearing it when not working out. Athleta lets you return stuff for any reason, so that is probably a good place to start.
Anonymous
You can purchase little clip on lights on Amazon in various colors. They also have flashing armbands, but I prefer the clip on lights.
I also do a headband and not a hat. Gloves, long pants, and a cheap down vest I bought at N Rack (we don’t get weather in the 20s, I think they coldest we’ve had is in the 30s, and I was still in the vest). The key for me is that it is all washable. I’d second just going to TJ Maxx or whatever, but you’ll have the best luck with that at the end of the season.
Anonymous
lululemon toasty tech tights are amazing. I’ve worn them in up to -10C to run with no problems, they’re not cheap, but possibly the most amazing tights ever. I like them way more than my Sugoi winter ones.

Runningwarehouse or Roadrunnersports. Both have good clearance sections. Roadrunnersports sells their own stuff that is very reasonable, and I’ve been impressed with the quality.

I used to buy all of the Brooks stuff when it was on sale. I used to have lululemon running tights and an earband with a Brooks jacket and you can get smart touch running gloves at Costco.
Jordan
I do long leggings, good wool socks, bra, ls shirt, jacket, reflecting vest, blinking light clipped on the back, headband and gloves on my morning runs.
I found cheap stuff on Old Navy that was long enough in the pants. It doesn’t matter what I wear, I always have to take a hot shower or my backside stays an ice cube when I get home. I’d invest in a good headband (depends on your head, I got one from good will and gave the nice ponytail athleta one to my buddy who it’s perfect for), get a couple of pairs of gloves (my nose runs probably tmi but I just use cheap ones but I have a bunch), and then good wool socks. I use a windbreaker type jacket everyday and then just a sports bra and long sleeve race shirt (tech fabric) underneath.
non-mainstream deodorant?
Has anyone had any luck with non-mainstream deodorant? I’ve noticed that for some reason, *I* don’t particularly like the way that most deodorants smell on me. I thought I had found 2 scents (secret brazil & hawaii) that I liked, but either their formatting has changed, or my own body chemistry has changed such that I am just not a fan of the combination anymore.
I don’t like powdery or fruity scents. I’d prefer something fresh, green, air, woods, sport…I’m even open to trying a men’s deodorant provided it doesn’t smell too musky or man-ish. Any ideas??
KT
I wear men’s deoderants because I can’t stand the female version scents–they are so overwhelmingly SWEET and I hate it.

I stock up on Tom’s calendula whenever I see it, because to me and on me it smells clean without being fruity, floral, or overpowering. It’s deodorant only, not antiperspirant, but if that’s what you’re looking for, I love it.
When I run out, I’ve been known to use DH’s Speed Stick (deodorant only), and it’s pretty good, except I smell like him, which can be confusing.

I’m really happy with Herban Cowboy’s “Love” deodorant. I found it at Who!e Foods. There are some other Herban Cowboy scents that are nice, but “love” is my favorite–not flowery, not spicy/ musky.

For drugstore rather than dept. store tier, I like Dove “Cool Essentials” cucumber and green tea scent.
NOT Urgent
Just a rant. If I get one more email that says Urgent! Must be done today! I’m going to scream. It is NOT urgent because you just remembered or because you want to go on vacation. It is especially not urgent if there is no deadline and it has been sitting in someone’s inbox for a month. Stop trying to move things from your to-do list to mine!

Your emergency is not my emergency! Ugh. I get this all the time in my job.

Along these lines, I cannot stand the “High Importance” exclamation mark. Emails about CLEs or random surveys (how did associate review season go? review our IT folks!) are not urgent. If you send me something that is not urgent with that stupid icon, I’m immediately deleting it.
And don’t use it even if it is actually important. That motion that’s due today? I know it’s important. I’ve been on you about getting information to me for weeks. Maybe you should’ve gotten me the information I need 3 seconds sooner instead of taking the time to attach a stupid icon that only serves to piss me off.
Anon for this
LOL. I have one opposing counsel that sends EVERY email with the urgent! marking. I sometimes wonder if she accidentally set it in her defaults and didn’t realize it. I just figured it would sound really passive aggressive to say “hey, don’t know if you realize it but every email is coming marked urgent. Just wanted to give you a heads up in case you didn’t know.” It drives me bonkers.
