For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional.
Lord, this suit is lovely. And oh so pricey! But back to the lovely aspects of it — we're intrigued by the ring and tie closure, which we have not seen on many suits before, and as always we love the princess seams and the jersey fabric. The pattern is both new to us but a little old, as well — it simultaneously reminds us of Mad Men and Sherlock Holmes. Armani Collezioni – Houndstooth Jersey Suit, available at Saks.com for (wait for it) $1,995 for the jacket and $615 for the skirt.

I may be in the minority here, but this doesn’t look like it’s worth anything near the price, high-quality or not. I’d pay $200, tops.
D
Drool. Love the suit. Agree that it’s overpriced.
Continuing our appropriate shoe thread, what shoes would you wear with this?
lulu
This is absolutely gorgeous. I normally wouldn’t go for a tie and ring closure but with Armani tailoring it works. *Swoon*
Kristin
I’m with El – in fact, it looks like double-knit to me. Koret maybe. Does anybody but me remember Koret?
CF
Yes! I remember Koret. My sister had a pantsuit made out of a very stylish brown and yellow houndstooth pattern.
Jane
Ha ha ha. So many other things to do with $2600. Like re-do a bathroom or take a vacation.
KAM
Agreed that it’s overpriced. But also agree with the fact that its gorgeous!
J
Maybe after all my student debt is paid off… in 30 years.
Jay
Gorgeous, but yes, it does look like double knit. There is no way I would ever spend that much money on one suit though, I don’t care how much I’m making or what my savings looks like. A week in Hawaii > that suit.
That said, I would wear my “neutral” heels with this. Let the design of the fabric speak for itself. Very dainty brown croc heels would work too, I think.
LPC
Ferragamo cap toes, 2.5 inch heels.
I might spend the money on this, unless the fabric is that Armani stuff that snags every time you come within three feet of anything with even the slightest texture.

I would totally buy this if I had any need for suits – but am never in court and rarely have a business formal client meeting. Everyone is business casual these days. Anyway – this is a beautiful suit. I love armani, definitely pricey but I think it’s worth it to look like a million bucks on the few occasions that require a suit. Their fabric and styling are lovely (and their sizing is so flattering :)
As for shoes – I have a great pair of 3/5 inch peep-toe patent leather heels that would look great. A lower mid-heel in chocolate wld be nice, too. A nude color wouldn’t for for me with this one – I am way too pale, my nude is literally a pale pink – but for someone with darker skin it could work.
jcb
ha! not 3/5 inch, meant 3.5″ peep-toe black patent leather heels

Speaking of suits, has anyone else noticed that Ann Taylor / Loft no longer seem to have any suits except a basic black or formal dressy suit?
Anonymous
Yes, I did notice that at my local Ann Taylor Loft (I live in So Cal). When I asked the sales staff they told me it was a conscious decision to have more casual, girly stuff, at least in that particular store
KLo
I’ve noticed it, too! But I have also noticed that the Ann Taylor sheath dresses are knocking it out of the park recently. So I’m calling it a fair trade. They also stopped carrying anything over a 12 (or sometimes a 14) in their stores.

I just picked up a three piece suit (pants, skirt, jacket) at Ann Taylor outlet for $199. It was a super cute black/blue tiny check pattern that looks navy from far away. Seems like the AT outlet had a really good selection/variety, if you have one near you.

Come on. $2,000 for a jacket where the shoulders don’t drape naturally? On a MODEL? In a posed photo?
I mean seriously – if the top does not look like a natural fit in the promotional photo, why would one buy this at any price?
Sorry. I’ll turn off the grumpiness now………….

The sales tax alone would be $230 in CA. You could help balance the state’s budget.

I think the big houndstooth pattern would make my hips look a mile wide, or as we said back in Iowa, “about three ax handles across the behind. “

I think this is interesting and looks great on the model. I love looking at more expensive suits in an effort to teach myself to recognize quality and to know the trends, etc. to look for in the cheaper lines. (Yes, I know, $$ doesn’t always = quality.) Ah, how I miss the days of great job security and gigantic bonuses big enough for a house down payment when I could’ve just run out and splurged on a suit like this as a present to myself. In the meantime, I’ll just hope for a lottery win.

This comment thread is why I love this site — my first thought when seeing this suit was, “Nice suit, outrageous pricetag.” I’m so glad to find other like-minded folks who think the same!
And I agree re: Ann Taylor Loft. I love their clothes that are girly but still work-appropriate (although some of their tops don’t work on those with larger chests), because they always fit well without tailoring. I wish they’d offer more suits like they used to. Their stuff seems to fit me better than regular Ann Taylor does.

The thing about this suit, for me, is that if I’m going to spend 2600 on a suit, I want it to be something basic, but beautiful, that I can wear a ton. This couldn’t be your go-to suit that you wore almost weekly. If it were, people would notice “there she is, wearing the check suit, must be Thursday!”
