For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional.
Today we're liking this light brown suiting from Tahari, which has just enough linen to make it great for summer, but enough other fabrics to make us hope it won't be a wrinkled mess after an hour of wearing it. We like the interesting double-layered look to the jacket, as well as the topstitching detail. The jacket (Tahari ASL Exclusively for Bloomingdale's Jade Cross-Weave Jacket) is $168, and the pants (Tahari ASL Exclusively for Bloomingdale's Lila Cross-Weave Straight-Leg Pants) are $138. (We are also undecided on whether this sheath dress matches the set or not (Tahari ASL Exclusively for Bloomingdale's “Helen” Belted Sheath Dress) — we'll have to check and get back to you.)

I’m sorry but those pants don’t even look good on the model. I like the jacket a lot though.
Shayna
There is definitely something off about the crotch — there’s too much fabric perhaps??
lawDJ
I agree that the pants look a bit high, but I really like the jacket and dress (if it is part of it).
Looking at Bloomingdale’s by the way, I found this Anne Klein dress:
http://www1.bloomingdales.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=474834&CategoryID=14952&cm_mmc=Froogle-_-Womens-_-DRESS-_-Anne_Klein_Dress_Colorblock_Belted_Sheath&utm_source=GoogleProduct&utm_medium=organic
It looks gorgeous in the navy (or black, can’t quite tell) but apparently they don’t sell it in that color online and I can’t find it anywhere. That’s the first Anne Klein dress I’ve liked so far and I even like what they’ve done with the “exposed/highlighted” zipper, I think it looks like a modern take on mod. If anyone finds this somewhere in that color, please post!

So funny that you mentioned that dress – I also noticed it when looking at the Tahari dress and thought it was beautiful!
I also like the Tahari dress, but unfortunately I have to disagree with Kat about the suit jacket. I think the double-look, especially on the collar makes it look kind of frumpy. However, I still really like the color for summer, and I would probably wear it, even with the double collar.

I keep seeing the double layer jacket, and I have tried on a few (Antonio Melani, Alex MArie, granted, not the highest end, but, in the range of Tahari, etc.) . I dont mind the look, but find the excess material to be bulky. I have enough bulk, thank you.
K
Hate the pants, but the jacket is nice.

These trousers are impossible on me, especially in a light colour! the lapels are cute on the jacket, though.
anon-ny
agreed, those pants look awful.
Carrie
High-waisted linen? Those pants are the Devil!

a quick hijack, if you are interviewing and sending out resumes, is it appropriate for the recruiting/HR person to ask you to call them? I had such an experience recently and it colored my opinion of the recruiter. I have always had recruiters call me, atleast for the first screening interview.
RKS
(1) Is this a recruiter/head-hunter or the company’s/agency’s/firm’s HR person?
(2) Are you hard to reach? Could they have emailed you asking them to call you rather than leaving a voice mail?
srsly?
I don’t understand what the problem is here. Why would this be inappropriate? The HR person must have contacted you at some point, in order to ask you to call him or her. Why not call as requested?
s-k-s
I’m assuming they left a message asking you to call them back? I don’t really see the issuer either …
eem
I am guessing that you mean that you have to call them for a telephone interview? I really don’t see why this would be inappropriate at all. In fact, I think if I were being interviewed on the phone, I would prefer to place the call so that I could make sure I was calm and collected before calling in, rather than having the interviewer call me a few minutes early or something when I might not be completely ready.
MelD
Huh? What else should an HR person do if he/she can’t get in touch with you? It’s certainly not appropriate to keep calling an applicant until she picks up. Sometimes the screener may have only a few quick questions for you to answer.
PG
I am NOT hard to reach. Infact, I had called the recruiter myself and she wanted to schedule another date and asked me to call her. Its not as if she called me and left me a message to call her back. I guess I am just surprised since the recruiter presumably has a specific amount to time to talk to candidates and are usually busy to wait for the candidate to call? I have never been asked to call a recruiter/HR person, especially out of state. It just gives me the impression that the recruiter is not serious enough/professional enough to call the candidate herself. Apparently it is common enough practice?
MelD, where did you see me saying or implying that I was not reachable? Talk about jumping to conclusions.
Eva
Is one of your concerns that you’d have to make a long distance call – and that it’s inappropriate to pass that expense onto you? I think most people these days use cell phones most of the time – where “minutes” are incurred regardless of who places the call, so it’s not seen as a very big deal (or their work phone – where cost is also not an issue). In my job, I don’t see much difference between saying to someone (client or vendor alike) – “okay, let’s touch base tomorrow, why don’t you give me a call at your convenience” versus “I’ll give you a call tomorrow to touch base around 1:00.” I might prefer the latter on days when my schedule is tighter, and the former when I can be a bit more flexible and accomodating. I don’t think this reflects on my professionalism or seriousness in any way.
Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever spent much time considering the seriousness/professionalism of a recruiter at a company where I was interviewing. I was more concerned about appearing professional to them, and reserved any judgment for the business teams I’d be working with directly.

It’s not clear to me from your posts if the recruiter asked you to call to schedule the date or call on the scheduled date, but either way, I would not draw any conclusions about professionalism or seriousness based on either scenario. So long as it’s clear who is initiating the call, I don’t care if it’s me or the other person.

Yikes, I don’t think MelD was aiming to offend by suggesting that the recruiter might be having trouble reaching you. And as some who played extensive games of phone tag with recruiters while in law school, I appreciated the individuals who asked me to give them a call–something about psyching myself up to place the call put me at ease and made me feel much more in control of the situation.
MelD
I was not aiming to offend. In many cases, people may not be easy to reach during work hours as they don’t want their current employers to know they are looking elsewhere. It’s much easier to ask someone to call back at her convenience instead of putting the applicant in a situation where she might not be able to get away at the specific time requested or may have to rush the call because something comes up at work.

I’ve had bad luck with Tahari ASL. The quality is pretty poor and it has not stood up to multiple dry-cleanings. Proceed with caution!
Cat
The original Tahari (sold at NM and I assume other higher-end dept. stores) holds up great. I have also had bad luck with the lower-priced lines (e.g., sweater marked machine wash developed a hole upon Wash #1, and there were no zippers or other poke-y things in the load…)

Pretty certain the dress matches the jacket based on fabric descriptions. I really wish websites would group all matched sets together!

Ok rant! I just typed out a long reply and the on submitting, the site asked me to stop commenting too fast ?!?
And when I hot the back button, all my typed content had disappeared. On other websites when one gets the “commenting too fast” message, your typed message is still available on hitting the back button.
A.
I have gotten in the habit of hitting “Ctrl-A – Ctrl C” right before I try to post, just in case the post gets lost. About one out of three posts either disappears or I get the “posting too fast” message (and the post disappears). If you copy before you hit “reply” and it barfs, you can just hit the “back” button, copy, and try again. HTH :)
Erin
This happens to me all the time, and my comment is always still there on both my work and home computer – if I hit the reply button again it shows up in the box. Having said that, there are so many problems with comments on this site lately, I always ctrl-A – ctrl-C before I hit submit.

I don’t know about adding the dress to that mix. I think it may be too similar, yet too different to actually match.

I love that dress, but I don’t think the jacket would look good with it, especially closed. The jacket has a different “style” than the dress it seems.
Samantha
Why does it say ‘light brown’ in the post? Is it my monitor, because the suit looks light gray to me.
A.
Anyone who likes Tahari should check out Overstock.com right now – they have a ton of Tahari suits and dresses.
ES
Thanks for the suggestion! I saw lots of nice stuff on there right now, but I wish they sold the suits as separates.

Those pants are probably just fine, but they don’t fit the model at all. They’re hemmed way too high and saggy in the bum area – you can see that from the front!

There’s that panysuit style I never like – jacket too short for the pants cut – yes, you can wear a long shirt or sweater under the jacket to bridge that awkward area below the belt, but who wants to do that – especially in warmer weather.
