Suit of the Week: Theory

For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional. Also: we just updated our big roundup for the best women's suits of 2024!
I don't think I've ever seen a suit in a tortoiseshell print! It feels almost like an animal print, but without the cheeky “rawr” vibe that typical animal prints can sometimes have, if that makes sense. (I feel certain I can find a gif from either a mob movie or a Catwoman movie if I look hard enough, ha….)
The blazer comes with matching pants, a mini dress, and a sleeveless, cropped polo that actually would really look cute with the pants; the pieces are $275-$535.
Hunting for a suit in a print or pattern? As of 2024, for more traditional prints, M.M.LaFleur has a lovely houndstooth option, a plaid, and a black-and-white check; J.Crew also has an ivory plaid. Wildfang has a nice pinstripe option for regular and plus sizes, and Banana Republic has a nice mid-brown plaid as well as some nice pinstripes, while 87Origins has a beautiful striped linen suit. For more unusual prints and patterns for suits, Boden has an vaguely '60s inspired “diamond terrace” pattern.

This morning I tripped while walking out my front door and fell into our herb garden. It didn’t hurt! I watched the doorbell footage to try and figure out what happened (and because I thought it would be funny to see a slow motion roll into the herb garden).
It was a funny fall, but I was struck by how much I don’t like the way my body looks (I’ve gained 40 lbs over the past couple of years for what feels like no reason). And also with sadness that I’m getting older and falls might happen more and more.
I go to the gym at least 3 times per week to try to prevent the last part. But just feeling kind of down about it all right now!
Aw, hugs! I daresay there’s not a person on the planet who would look good taking a fall on the doorbell-cam!
Funny story about falling into the herb garden: When my daughter was learning how to ride her bike many years ago, she took a tumble into a big patch of rosemary beside the driveway. She wasn’t hurt, and wow! She smelled REALLY GOOD for the rest of the day!
Thank you :)
And the smell is a huge plus! I still smell great from the incident!
Awwh, sorry to hear. The footage must be good for a chuckle!
As to the balance part, yoga and Pilates are your friends.
No matter how fit a person is, balance cannot be understated.
Doorbell cameras are straight up designed to make you look like a goblin, I think! Our nanny this past summer was 21 and in great shape, but the doorbell camera wasn’t kind to her either.
Glad you’re okay, and also that you smell nice!
This is true, the wide angle focal length of security cameras is not flattering for anyone.
Plus doorbell cameras are placed very low so they look up at your face from belly button or chest height, not at your face from eye height. They get a great view of all your lumps and bumps and clothing folds between here and there and probably do not take lighting into account
Glad you’re ok and you sound like a great sport.
There is a woman who posted on old twitter about how she fell while face-timing her BFF and her best friend took a screen shot of her fallen and of course checked on her to make sure she was ok and then would send her the screen shot every few weeks or months like, “is this funny yet?” And the woman loved her BFF and her sense of humor
FWIW I would totally be friends with you but no need to check the doorbell camera for the footage – it’s not your friend
Agree. My doorbell cam is traumatizing. I have had my pic taken in front of the window by the door and I think I look good in the pics. Then I look at the ring cam footage of the same moment and I look like I need to take up residence under a bridge.
Does anyone have experience selling jewelry on the Real Real? I have some (cheap for Tiffany) Tiffany pieces I’d love to offload for some pocket money but I don’t know if there are best practices, since these are hopefully actually worth some small amount of money unlike the stuff I sent to ThredUp in 2015 :-D Or if you have other ideas of better place to re-sale them. They’re Elsa Peretti pearls by the yard (or maybe it is, if I can’t find the set.)
No personal experience but I have heard horror stories of The Real Real losing items… personally, I’d look for a consigment shop that you could drop off in person.
I had an in person consignment shop ‘lose’ a very expensive item. They just didn’t want to pay out my half when it sold, but I had no recourse.
Wouldn’t they be liable for the full value in small claims though?
I didn’t have original proof of purchase for the item and my intake document for the consignment shop was pretty vague think ‘Small black Prada bag’ so it would have basically just been he said she said at that point.
I helped a friend sell a bunch of items they had bought at auctions for resale and The Real Real lost a ton of it, and also damaged some of the items that they returned as not accepted for sale. Like, he got back one shoe out of a pair or multiple pairs. They were never made whole–even when The Real Real agreed to honor the average internet sale price for similar items to make good on the loss, they deducted their commission before repaying. Which is wild because they didn’t sell it to earn commission–they lost it. I would NOT use them for selling.
Poshmark?
That’s what I’d do.
Maybe just sell on ebay?
+1, I am comfortable buying that ‘level’ of jewelry on eBay from a seller with exce11ent reviews.
I’ve sold jewelry on eBay. First look for comparable pieces to get a feel of the price you can ask. Take good pictures, including one on a scale if you have one. Try to take a photo of the 927 or 14k stamps if they’re there. Minimizing the questions someone might ask will help sell it faster.
Post here?
I love buying things from TRR so I’m glad there are people out there selling, but I’ve heard such awful things about it.
I sent in a bunch of items and they accepted many but returned two to me. One was a Gucci GG belt that they claimed to be fake. Well the one they “returned” to me certainly was fake and not the one I sent in. I was so angry and the countless calls and e-mails got me nowhere. If you do go the send route, take lots of photos, have receipts, etc.
Has anyone here gone skiing in the Alps? Bonus points if with kids.
We are thinking of taking a longer trip to France – sightsee in Paris and then ski in the alps rather than trying to do one trip to France and one out west to ski. (According to Reddit and my brief Google searches, it is actually cheaper to ski in the Alps than at many places out west if you don’t have a loyalty pass…and with domestics flights being what they are…). But I’m overwhelmed with how many options there are so looking for personal experience!
I skied in Engelberg and had a blast. It’s a pretty advanced mountain, though, so wouldn’t consider with kids unless they ski at a high level. I think it’s a great idea for you to do this trip. Skiing is in fact cheaper there than out west. If Austria is on the table for you, I’ve heard great things about Saalbach for families.
I’m French and have gone skiing in the Alps pretty much every year! We go to Meribel, which is super cute. Pricey, but I feel like it’s still cheaper than skiing in a nice resort in the US. Woodsy village, lots of nice hotels and cabins to rent, a lot of great food. I recommend getting a ski in/ski out option if you can. Lots of Brits so ski classes in English are widely available. There is a complex in the village with a pool, movie theater, indoor ice skating, and rock climbing which is nice if you need a break from the skiing. Courchevel is the next town over with a very upscale vibe (thing Chanel stores on the slopes), Meribel is the nice family-friendly one, and Les Menuires is a cheaper option. The 3 valleys are interconnected so if you’re serious about skiing get the upgraded lift tickets that will get you access to all 3, but honestly the one is already a great option (you can get a one day upgrade too). It’s about a 4 hour train ride from Paris, then a bus or taxi up the mountain, or about a 5 hour drive. If you’re looking for an all inclusive option, Club Med has lots nice options in the Alps, but it’s definitely not cheap.
My husband is Austrian so we go every year to ski with their cousins. I like Warth, Zurs, and Gargellen. Caveat that we drive up and back in the same day so no hotel recommendations and don’t use the ski schools but suspect we will soon as kids are getting better than me. English is widely spoken so I wouldn’t worry about kids not understanding their instructors.
Thank you all!!
The Ikon pass covers multiple European resorts. The FB group has great advice. Recommend. Also note that the Alps had a pretty terrible snow season, so consider that when locking in nonrefundable things.
Anyone use creatine and want to comment on how much it has helped with muscle building (or not)? I’ve been lifting weights for a decade and am also in good cardio shape. In part because I’m vegetarian, I struggle to gain muscle. I’ve been reading about creatine, including on websites such as Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic. I’d like some real-life feedback about women who have found it effective (or not)
I use it and I think it works. As a bonus, it also provides a cognitive benefit for vegetarians.
How do you use it? I just added protein and collagen peptides to my diet so apparently I’m down to new powders rn.
I drink it once a day, for the most part. Some people make claims about creatine loading and drinking it within X hours of working out, but I’m not convinced and ignore that part.
Are you already getting enough protein?
Protein is a constant struggle, but I am vigilant about trying to get enough. I won’t say I always do.
Yes, I’ve built more muscle using creatine when combined with high protein intake and progressive overload type training than I did doing those things without the creatine. If your goal is more muscle you need to pair it with strength training and adequate calories and protein. I also notice an increase in power and stamina in intense workouts while using it. More and more studies coming out about the benefits for women, particularly older women, even beyond increased muscle. I take 5 mg after I work out but I don’t think the timing matters, the key is taking it every day and getting it stored in your muscles over 30+ days. The Messy Middle has some good podcast episodes on creatine if you go back through the catalog.
I’m getting back into swimming for exercise after a long time, and I’m realizing that I don’t know how to handle washing my hair so frequently. I have thick, coarse, wavy hair and I usually wash every 4-5 days, but I’m trying to swim 4 days a week, so the frequency needs to go up. The last time I swam this often was high school/early college, and I guess I just dealt with having incredibly dry hair back then. I currently use Kristen Ess shampoo, alternating between the clarifying and extra gentle shampoo, since I’m prone to buildup and dry/flaky scalp, and the extra gentle conditioner. Do any swimmers out there have products they like and use for frequent washing?
Use a swim cap!
No one is swimming for exercise without a swim cap! Even shorter is way too unruly to do this reasonably.
Besides, your hair still gets wet under a swim cap.
OP, no advice, sorry – I have thin hair and have to wash every day
I swim for (casual) exercise without a swim cap! I know you need one for racing but I see plenty of people at the pool without them.
YMMV, but even in a tight bun without a cap my hair gets loose. I swim ~once a week but I’ve never seen anyone (who doesn’t have a pixie!) swim laps without a cap on. Leisure swimming yes, workout swimming G3’s no
I don’t even know what G3’s means so you’d probably consider me a leisure swimmer :) But I consider it exercise and not just for fun. (To me “fun” swimming is going to the pool with my kid or to the beach with friends, not swimming laps alone.)
This is not enough to save your hair from a pool. Your hair still gets soaked!
You will not regret getting back to swimming! I like Paul Mitchell 3 clarifying shampoo. Swim caps don’t keep water out btw.
With the caveat that I have straight thin hair that I wash almost daily anyway, I’ve found that covering my hair in conditioner before swimming can help keep my hair from getting too dry when swimming regularly.
When I was a frequent swimmer this was the advice.
And use a chlorine- rinse shampoo after you swim, in the shower.
And then maybe a leave-in conditioner for your styling needs?
a) make sure your hair is 100% wet when you get in the pool — hair is like a sponge so if it’s already “full” it will absorb less chlorines and other chemicals
b) they do make chlorine shampoos — we got some from FairyTales but last time I searched on Amazon there were a lot of options
c) hair mask, hair mask, hair mask! when I was swimming frequently I was doing Vo5 a lot because cheap and easy, but but if i were swimming a lot lately i’d probably try to do a heated hair wrap with a good mask for 30+ minutes…
+1, especially your first point.
I have fine hair that I wash daily and recently began casually swimming a few days per week. The pool I use requires you to shower off before going out on the deck and they strongly encourage you to rinse your hair, too. I thought it was overzealous of them at first but I realized quickly that drenching my hair with shower water prevents it from soaking up the pool chemicals. Another quick rinse after I swim, and I can’t even smell the chlorine.
I don’t swim for exercise but at my stylist’s advice during a beach vacation I got my hair sopping wet, wrung it out gently, and then saturated it with conditioner and tied it up in a bun. My hair has never been softer despite being in the pool/beach/waterpark for a week straight. Can you do that and then stick it in a swim cap?
Don’t you need to use a chlorine removal shampoo like UltraSwim every time you swim?
No
I swim daily. Many days, I just rinse and then use conditioner — I skip shampoo — several days each week.
Please do not put conditioner in your hair (with or without a swim cap) then swim laps in a gym or public pool. All ask you to rinse first for a reason.
Former synchro swimmer here. Wet your hair, cover it in conditioner, and put on a swim cap before getting in the pool. A hair mask once a week also helps.
I shower at the pool, then condition and put a cap on. Shower and condition right after pool. Its not perfect but better than just swimming unprotected and not washing. If I had to go into an office everyday, I probably wouldn’t swim at all.
Hi All – I posted yesterday in response to the OP whose DH told her he cheated. I’m the Anon who mentioned my DH was going through depression, said some things about us that shook me, and then talked about what I did to take care of myself.
Just wanted to say thanks for all the replies, support, and perspective. <3
Thank you so much for commenting today … I was the poster who was deeply miffed on your behalf and I’m so glad you saw everyone’s comments as support. I know you were commenting in support of the OP and not really inviting opinions about your own situation and that can feel – not great, even if they are coming from the best intentions.
Your husband gets his own opinion and experience, but it doesn’t mean it’s the only valid one.
Sending you my continued support and with a side of indignance whenever you might need it.
Same here. I was one of the people who commented. I just don’t want you to feel like you have to take the blame for everything when from this stranger’s perspective, it looks like you were doing a LOT to keep life moving along.
Thank you!
I don’t agree with DH’s perspective, and I agree it’s definitely not what I deserve. As one person who replied implied…yes, there are some more nuances/details…but I think the TLDR is that his feelings are valid, his behavior was not, and his perspective likely skewed due to depression that he need(s) to get a hold of, which he is, but my concern is figuring it out on his own won’t be enough long-term.
I also appreciated the comments from folks saying they had a similar experience with their partners, whether they were me or my DH at some point. DH just doesn’t have a lot of friends to turn to in this phase of life, nor is his side of the family reliable for Reasons. Part of the reason he was going through a hard time is one of his closest friends/brother figures was (and is) seriously ill to the point we had to financially support treatment.
I also know he has to prioritize and invest in other friendships, therapy, etc., which I’ve encouraged and offered to help set up (therapy) – it’s not on me to be the sole source of support.
Fingers crossed I’m on the other side of this for now, and in the future can talk to DH about long term fixes.
Hi,
I’m the OP who just found out and wanted to say I really appreciated your comments to help me.
I think my husband might be depressed. I have had an injury so needed help after showers and with some items of clothes. I’ve also developed migraines from perfumes that make it hard to go to restaurants and concerts and he finds that hard. There’s also financial stress.
I asked a few of our mutual friends to check in with him for a chat and support. He’s starting therapy Tuesday. I’m starting Monday. He said he’d do relationship therapy together, we’ll see.
It is so unmooring to find myself in this situation after 20 years.
For now I’ve left to give him some space, and because I can’t bear to be in that house.
Wow! That is a lot. Sending you positive thoughts.
What are thoughts about how far into summer black boots can be worn? They are so easy to throw on in the winter to complete an outfit, but it feels strange wearing them on a sunny day in the spring, even when it’s chilly.
My rule is I dress for the weather, not the calendar. So if it’s cold I’d go ahead and wear them.
Same.
But I’m old and value warm feet more than being ‘fashionable’.
Second this! If it’s 90 at the end of September, white is appropriate. If it’s 40 in May, winter boots are appropriate.
This
I do this too but I’ve ended up stuck outside on a hot day that started out chilly wearing a wool sweater and boots.
I love having a pair of pale neutral suede boots to swap them out with in the spring.
I posted previously about how much wear I’m getting out of off-white boots I impulsively purchased. Planning to upgrade them eventually (but not to suede, which I would ruin immediately :) ).
I’ll wear my boots well into the Spring but not Summer. I love wearing them with a shorter dress in the Spring but it’s way too hot and humid for summer. I think if you’re comfortable, then it’s fine.
I tend to put them away by the end of March as they feel “heavy” for the season. YMMV if you live in a colder climate where winter sometimes lasts until May.
There’s no “can be worn.” You can wear black boots year round if they work for you.
Personally, I feel “off,” in a way I don’t like, when I’m wearing outfits that are out of sync with my surroundings. It makes me feel out of sorts. Examples: I have a hard time wearing sleek city clothes in a small dusty mountain town or wearing a heavily-black outfit in the spring. {{Shrug}} It’s just a personal quirk. It wouldn’t bother other people.
Exactly this.
I’m a person who wears dark fall colours (and black boots) year-round because I just dislike lighter spring and summer colours.
Everyone is different and can wear what they like and what works for them no matter the season.
I feel the same way! I know I should probably be less rigid and just wear what I like, whenever I like, but I guess I’m pretty heavily influenced by what’s around me.
Is it me or are the seasons changing drastically? Feels like it stays warm later in the year and it is still cold in April. Can someone tell the retailers?
The entire fashion industry knows. They only care about the sale.
DH is heading to a conference in LA in April and I’m thinking of tagging along. It’s a the Convention Center and he stay nearby. He would be mostly away during the day and we would go out in the evening. I’ve been to LA a few times but we have always stayed in the Santa Monica area. I’m happy to hang out alone but don’t want to rent a car – I don’t love driving alone in new cities and LA traffic is too chaotic.
Any LA rettes want to weigh in on (1) what to do in DTLA, (2) how easy it is to get around by walking/Uber/public transportation? Also, I assume it’s reasonably safe to walk around during the day? I live in a city, I’m ok in “city” environments, but still want to be reasonably comfortable. I like museums, nice coffee shops, a bit of shopping, and good food.
Downtown LA is pretty grungey. I used to work for a law firm with offices there and I didn’t really enjoy visiting. I think you’ll be ok safety wise as long as you don’t go out after dark but there isn’t a lot to do in the area and as you probably know LA doesn’t have great public transit. You could Uber but it adds up.
I would just walk or Uber or kyft. Bunker Hill (Disney Hall, the Broad, MOCA) is not far and well worth a visit. Grand Central Market is fin. if you like architecture you can check out the Bradbury Bldg, Central Library, Union Staation. Olvera Street for history and taquitos. And email me seniorattorney1 at Gmail and I will pick you up and take you to lunch.
kyft = lyft
That’s so kind, thank you! Making a note of this if I decide to go :)
I’d want to go to LA just to have lunch with Senior Attorney.
Same!!
do it! would love to see all of you!
I personally like DTLA but many people here don’t, mainly because of the homeless. I feel perfectly safe walking alone during the day.
I like the Broad museum and there are lots of nice restaurants and bars all over. Off the top of my head I like ilCaffe, Dama, Little Sister, Manuela, Mignon, the Varnish, Las Perlas, Sonoratown, and Perch (happy hour on the roof only not food). Shopping is kind of meh tbh, I’d uber during non-rush hour to Beverly Hills or Melrose for that.
You could get lucky and have pool weather in April (DTLA is usually much warmer than Santa Monica), so I’d stay somewhere with a nice pool like the Intercontinental. I’ve only been to the restaurant, but the Hoxton looks good as well. From DTLA you can take the train to Santa Monica, Los Feliz or Pasadena. You’re also a short uber from Silverlake and Echo Park, two of my favorite neighborhoods.
Like any business district, DTLA just isn’t a fun walkable neighborhood. I grew up and attended college in LA and to me the “real” LA is the westside, Santa Monica, Silver Lake, Echo Park, Griffith Park, Los Feliz, hiking in the mountains, etc. As a musician I used to get a thrill out of attending performances and performing at the Music Center, but it was very much a “drive there and then leave right after the performance” thing. The Getty Villa and Getty Center are some of my favorite places.
Sounds good, thanks for the suggestions! Any advice on what to do in Silverlake or Echo Park?
Silverlake and Echo Park are mostly residential neighborhoods with restaurants and a bit of retail along Sunset Blvd. When I visit friends in that area, I like walking on the hillside streets, but honestly I wouldn’t drive there to do that if if weren’t for my friends. I don’t think of those neigborhoods as tourist attractions, but if someone who lives there says otherwise, I will bow to their better-informed perspective.
In Loz Feliz you can go to the Griffth Observatory and/or hiking in the surrounding Griffith Park, and see some very nice views of LA. The AllTrails app will show you options for trails.
Fair warning: I’m a person who enjoys discovering cities by walking around. Pre-COVID I would have recommended that for areas of downtown LA, but right now I’m with Senior Attorney and vote for Lyft or Uber-ing to specific destinations.
Enjoy the SoCal weather! And if you want to go to Santa Monica for the day, now there’s a train line that takes you all the way there from downtown.
Redbird is a great place to eat, too.
+1 for Perch rooftop and views!
The Last Bookstore is one of my favorite bookstores, just for the building and bank vault rooms. They have craft artisans on the second floor as well. It’s in downtown.
Little Tokyo is nearby and has some fun stores to browse, coffeeshops and restaurants. You can take the train to Little Tokyo, it’s only a few stops. From downtown, you can also take the train to Pasadena, or Santa Monica. The downtown area is a little grungy, but the convention center area should be a little less so, since it has the arenas and newer restaurants/buildings.
I would say go, but you will need a car. If you don’t wanna drive, it’s a tough trip with a lot of ubers:
– Getty Museum,
– Hollywood sign hike
– day hanging in santa monica shopping, eating,
– beach walk from Santa Monica to Marina del Rey and beyond. Also Marina area is gorgeous
– people watching on Rodeo Drive
– LACMA
oh, and the motion picture academy museum and the Oeterson Automotive Museum
Peterson
I go up to DTLA once a week and spend the night at least once a month. There is plenty to do for a few days without renting a car or trekking out to the west side. In addition to the excellent suggestions you have already gotten, the Grammy Museum and California Science Center are worth a look. And if you really want to get out of downtown Pasadena and the Norton Simon and the Huntington are closer than Santa Monica or either Getty.
Also I routinely take the Metro and it is fine during the day. I would not ride it at night. It is easy to navigate and you can load a pass on your phone or Apple Watch.
Love the suit!
I have a dress with this vibe, but done in navy and army green, from Ann Taylor circa 2011.
Talk to me about Providence, RI. Husband is being transferred for work and I’m looking at an immigration atty job in the Elmwood neighborhood. I know literally nothing about Providence, other than it’s home to Brown, but I have a vague sense that it’s a run-down, Rust Belt kind of city? Where would you live if you needed to get to Elmwood but wanted a quiet house with a big yard and good schools? Husband will be in downtown proper. A visit is planned, but I’m hoping you can provide some direction.
i have cousins that grew up in the area and a colleague who also moved to the area with a high schooler. all kids are in/graduated from private school. Rhode Island has some cute towns/beach areas and does get traveling theater. my dad’s brother really liked raising kids there. he is a physician and an empty nester now, but a cardiologist salary went quite far in the Providence area (they lived in Pawtucket). good southwest flights from the providence airport and not terribly far from Boston, though I wouldn’t want to commute there every day.
RI doesn’t have reciprocity so you’ll have to take the bar there, I think.
I’m in PVD and love it way more than I expected to. Brown + RISD + JWU means there is a pretty young, hip vibe; the restaurants are way better than they should be for a city this size. The real estate market is incredibly tight right now, and if you want a big yard, you’re going to have to go out of the city, probably Warwick, even the wealthy neighborhoods on the East Side, near Brown, don’t have large lots.
There is a big culinary school there and a lot of graduates stay in town. It’s a real food city.
I second the idea that if you want a big yard, you’ll need to go outside the city. The East Bay is kind of inaccessible right now because half of the main bridge connecting that part of the state to Providence was closed unexpectedly because it’s falling down and it probably won’t be back to normal for a few years. Warwick is a nice option, but it’s huge, so depending where you are in the city, you’d be just as close heading further south. East Greenwich and North Kingstown are nice suburban options about a 25 minute drive from downtown Providence (again, depending on where in each town you are) and closer to Elmwood. Crumbling infrastructure aside, I wouldn’t compare Providence to the rust belt. RI has a lot (culture, restaurant, beaches, etc.) and it’s so close to Boston (1 hr) and NYC (3 hrs) that some of the wealth in those cities has crept into the community.
I am not a native Rhode Islander but I think it is great. I’m surprised by how happy I am with my own move here.
l would agree that Elmwood is scrappier than I’m personally comfortable with
If you have kids, look at East Greenwich, Barrington and North Kingstown. Pawtuxet Village is another lovely option as is Jamestown.
The food scene is great and the Beaches are amazing
Good luck!
Protein comes up frequently on this board. I would like some tips on upping my intake as a vegetarian. I am trying to build muscle mass (I am in my 40s and worried about muscle loss) and average about 60g per day and am hoping to get to 80-90. Any tips?
Add chia seeds to Greek yogurt and eat more hardboiled eggs and cheese.
Not sure where you stand on dairy, but fortified lactose free milk will give you the extra 20 grams you are looking for. Same for Siggi’s yogurt.
+1
I eat very little meat, but have a lot of dairy, and have to be careful not to get too much protein! I drink Fairlife non-fat milk with all meals, to take pills/vitamins etc.. Since I grew up drinking milk, it is normal for me. I easily get 60g of protein from milk alone! Yogurt for breakfast with berries. Always some sort of tofu/protein with whole grains/salads for lunch and nuts. Normal dinner with whatever. Eggs/fish/tofu/beans/occasional chicken.
And in the evening, I make a hot vanilla drink that I love. It’s like a desert,
A cup or less of milk + 1/4 teaspoon vanilla, a touch of Splenda. Microwave 1.5 minues. Such a treat!
I have trouble too. I’m not strictly vegetarian but I don’t care for meat. I’ve been mixing one serving (2 scoops) of Orgain vanilla protein powder, one serving (3/4 cup) Fage nonfat Greek yogurt, 1/2 cup Kind cinnamon granola, and 1/2 cup blueberries in bowl. I fondly call it “glop”. I prefer it without the protein powder but I really need the protein. This meal comes in at less than 500 calories, 43 grams of protein, and is very filling.
Protein powder.
I’m mostly vegetarian and get protein by intentionally including as many eggs, beans, lentils, chickpeas, and tofu in my meals as I can stand.
It becomes… not very pleasurable… to reach that level of protein intake on a vegetarian diet without supplements.
Anyone have a specific morning yoga video they do often or really like? I mostly do yoga in my classes, but have a mini 5 minute thing I do most mornings to just stretch a bit (some sun salutations etc..). But honestly I’d love a 20-30min routine that I could just put on the screen and follow that gives me a nice stretch/range of movements for starting the day.
I’m a little tired with Yoga by Adrienne, although I know she is popular here. The amount of talking she does is a little much for me, especially when you watch the same video multiple times.
Ooh ooh! I like Ekhart Yoga. I never got into Adrienne. Try the “20-minute wake up flow with Esther” or “30 min morning bliss.”
If you have Audible, there is a series of 20 minute morning yoga series by Move With that I do- it’s called Rise and Shine Yoga Flows. i like that it is audio only- I find it more relaxing in the morning than a video.
I also like Sarah Beth Yoga on YouTube- it’s not as touchy-feely as yoga with Adrienne.
I love anything from Yoga with Kassandra. She is less chatty than Adrienne but still helpful and warm. She also has minimal cues flows if you just want the basics. She has hundreds of 10, 20, and 30-min flows; I’ve been doing her flows for years and haven’t had to repeat yet!
Thanks so for these recs. Looking forward to trying them.
I am in a spring-cleaning mood; what’s everyone doing to refresh? House, garden/yard, outlook on life…
Some new area rugs. Cleaning windows. And sadly not spring cleaning the past few weekends but instead saying eff it and enjoying the sunshine outside.
I’m itching to rent a power washer and do my patio…
It’s still a bit too early for that here…
I’m browsing bike helmets because I need a new one this year, and am seriously considering a pair of roller skates (old school, not blades).
Washing all those things that should be washed more often.
Today for 5 min grabbed my Vac and used the fine attachment to do all the edges in those hiding places etc…
I have washed all of my wool and other animal fiber sweaters on the delicate setting of my new washer which didn’t hurt them at all! I tried one that’s pretty worn out as the first potential sacrificial lamb, but they all look great. I washed on delicate in cold with a low spin + a soak cycle. I used Euclan.
Now I will make sure they’re dried thoroughly & then store them away with some Yardley’s Lavender Soap in the tub with them. (Apparently it repels moths.)
I’m keeping a couple lighter weight ones out for in between weather, which we get a lot of until May, but I’m happy to be putting away the bulky sweaters until probably late October.
