For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional. A subdued but colorful suit can be hard to find, which is part of the reason I'm so excited about this Reiss suit — I love that blue. In addition, the seaming details on the jacket and the dress look flattering and interesting, and the wool/mohair mix sounds warm. (Annoyingly, the trousers shown don't seem to be in stock online — call the store if you're really interested.) The jacket (Aisha Ink Panel Detail Fitted Jacket Bright Navy) is $500, and the dress (Abbi Fay Tailored Dress) is $360.Sales of note for 9.10.24

Love this suit. For a cheaper alternative, the BR “navy” in their new suiting line is roughly similar in brightness (or so it seems from the screen).

Lovely suit. I like that the neckline doesn’t appear to need a cami. I’m really tired of necklines being ridiculously low or very high. Why is it so hard to find a simple scoop neck?
AIMS
I was late to work this morning because I spent 20 minutes looking for a cami to wear under a new sheath dress and trying various options that didn’t quite work (actually somewhat similar looking from JCrew factory). I didn’t think the neckline would be a problem when I bought it and then I bent down in front of a mirror — eek. Sometimes I think I should just quit my legal job and create a company of fashionable dickies or something.
Bonnie
I’ll go in on that business with you AIMS. At least you discovered the problem at home; I once noticed that my top opened up when I bent over on a full court day where I spent a lot of time having to lean over to write.

Styling advice, please: I ordered this sweater, and it is lovely. I usually do just fine with color combos, but am a little lost with this one. I usually wear solid grey and black pencil skirts. I know this would look great with tweed, but is there any way to make this work with gray or black skirts? I am currently building my work wardrobe, but I don’t want to invest in an entire outfit to go with one sweater. I’ll take tights/shoe matching suggestions, as well. Thanks!

Beautiful sweater! What colour did you buy? I think the wine colour would look fantastic with either grey or black. I would add a statement necklace (either chunky or long – I’m thinking maybe gold?)
Susedna
If you got it in the brick red color, I’d pair it w/one of your grey pencil skirts. Reds, pinks, and yellows look wonderful with grey.
If you bought the tan-ish color, that would go nicely with the black pencil skirts.
OP
I got the wine color. If with a gray skirt, what shoes?
Susedna
I would love a wine red sweater + gray skirt + cognac (medium brown) shoes combo.
zora
Grey shoes, or black would be perfect. Black shoes are a neutral. Altho, lots of colored shoes would look awesome, too.
I’ve also been LOVING this color with various shades of blue lately.
A Nonny Moose
Have to disagree that black shoes are a neutral. This post which Kat also referenced a while ago put into words everything I don’t like about black shoes. http://www.alreadypretty.com/2011/01/being-intentional-with-black.html
Anon
But black is a neutral, whether or not it is your preference.
zora
NonnyMoose: i agree with that post, and I think black is *better* when integrated into the outfit. But what I mean by being a neutral is that if she wore black shoes with a wine sweater and grey skirt, the shoes wouldn’t look out of place, they wouldn’t clash, no one would notice them. It would be more fun to have a shoe in a color that makes the outfit more fun. But in the workplace, Black shoes can go with almost any outfit and look objectively professional.
NOLA
Gray shoes or booties (I posted about gray booties on my tumblr!). Gray tights.
OP
Thanks everyone! I think it was the shoes that were giving me pause here. Inspired now to hunt down some wine-colored (or perhaps gray) shoes/booties.
Jules
Gorgeous sweater.
I’m wearing these red pumps/booties right now. IRL they might lean a bit more to the brown side of red than the sweater, though.

Black and grey go with everything.

The wine would also look nice with navy blue, imo. But if you only have grey and black, then go with grey skirt/pants.

Horrible news. I have a friend (older than me, in her early 60s) who was diagnosed with incurable but treatable cancer about a month ago. She has been very upbeat and was happy about starting radiation treatment last week, as she hoped she would come out of it with more energy. I heard from her last Friday but nothing since then. Well, I just found out that she is now in hospital – her brain tumour caused her to fall and break both her legs. I cannot even imagine how she is feeling. All this, on top of the fact that she has been going through a divorce this year.
She is in a different city and has her family around her, but can I ask you all to send her positive thoughts and prayers? This is all just so awful. I am still processing and trying to figure out what I can do to help…
Susedna
I’m so sorry to hear this is all descending upon your friend. Sending healing thoughts in her direction. My goodness. How awful.
One thing that can be done is – if she likes this sort of humor, clip out some cartoons (my fave would be from the New Yorker, but other cartoons may suit if sardonic isn’t her favorite flavor of humor) and slide them into a get well card, so in addition to whatever message you write in the card, she’ll get some laughs.
L
Does she have someone who’s her “on the ground” person? Maybe you could help with the virtual network (email list, etc) to get people to mail cards, help with food delivery etc. I think a nice note and maybe say netflix or something for her to do while she recovers from the fall.
amelia earhart
So, so sorry to hear this. I’ll be sending lots of good vibes her way.
Nancy Blackett
I had a realization the other day which I thought would benefit from some sharing! My birthday was last week, and someone asked what the favourite present I got was. I really had to think about it and ended up settling on the card my good friend sent me. We are in the habit of sending each other birthday cards every year with heartfelt messages – memories we have together, ways in which the other is amazing. I don’t remember many other presents that I’ve received, but those cards mean a lot to me.
Just a thought that sometimes the best presents are true statements of how we feel about other people. The stuff will potentially be forgotten, but truly telling someone how much they mean to you can have such a lasting impression. I was starting to get stressed about what to get family and friends for the holidays this year, but now I think I’m planning on getting some small gifts and really writing down what they mean to me.
NOLA
That is awesome! My SO and I always exchange cards and we try to make them meaningful and save them. That said, he has bought me 2 birthday gifts in the 7 years we’ve been together that stand out. One is the beautiful pink pearl ring that I wear every day. He bought it for the first birthday we were together. I had just gotten divorced a few months before that and I wanted a new ring just because. I ordered the ring in silver because I didn’t think I wanted to pay for gold. We picked out the design and the pearl. He called the jewelry store and changed the order to white gold and gave it to me for my birthday. Every once in awhile he picks up my hand with the ring and says “I did that” and it’s very sweet. The other one is shoes! I am a shoe fanatic and one year he bought me these beautiful red patent kitten heels with a flat bow on the front. My boss used to call them my birthday shoes! I just about wore them out and recently took them to a cobbler, who restored them to their original glory.
Monday
I really agree with this. My own realization: I’m not a real gifts person and I also barely reluctantly agreed to have a wedding, so we directly requested no gifts. I expected instead to get a bunch of sweet cards, but in fact we got very few, and of these most were generic with no personalized text at all. It made me realize that what I thought was a default nice thing to do is actually very special and kind of rare. No hard feelings at all, but I learned from it.
Anonymous
Similar experience. We had a very small destination wedding and while I didn’t expect anyone back home to give us gifts when we got back I was surprised by how hardly anyone sent us a card or even just a heartfelt email congratulations. These are all people whose weddings, showers, engagement parties I have attended and where for each occasion I wrote a lengthy personal note. Oddly enough people at work or friends who haven’t gotten married all gave us nice little token gifts and very sweet cards – not that it was expected or necessary. Go figure.
Like you, not holding it against anyone, but just surprised at how few people even bothered with a one word “Congrats!!!!!” text message. Default nice things are hardly default it seems.
zora
cards are the best. I have been trying to get in the habit of sending notecards and postcards to friends and family randomly during the year. But I’m not doing a very good job so far. :o\

I forget who mentioned it here but I’ve adopted the practice of sending my nephew a postcard from everywhere I travel. It’s worked for me since its tied to an out of the ordinary event.

Or you could think of it as an excuse to travel more ;-)
Flying Squirrel
I do this for my nieces and nephews…and my parents and in-laws. I got in the habit when I was studying abroad in college and taking occasional trips. I didn’t talk to my parents all that often, and my Dad made some joke about never knowing where in the world I was. So the postcards were an easy way for them to track me. And the habit just stuck. I added my nieces and nephews a few years ago when my oldest niece had a school project on mail, and my sister asked us all to send her something. Since then, I’ve added them to my postcard list.

Does anyone else think that downward sloping seams or quilting (like on down coats) feels “sad”? Or am I just way too emotionally connected to clothing?
Ru
Ha, I like the way you think. But downward sloping seams remind me of chevrons, which is always A+ in my book.
Bonnie
Quite the opposite. I think the seams are very flattering.
Terry
Also, the fabric slopes away under the button so you can see the zipper of the pants up to the waistband. This seems to be a trend- what are peoples thoughts on this jacket style vs. one where the jacket fully closes under the buttons? To me it makes it makes it look like the jacket isn’t big enough.
Lady Harriet
I like it, but I have a high waist and large stomach, so jackets that fit the rest of me often don’t fully close under the buttons. At least this way I can look like I’m doing it on purpose. :)
E
Threadjack: does anyone experience milia around the eyes? I had one in the corner of my eye which I carefully popped fortunately with no damage to the skin area. I have one on my eyelid though and it’s driving me nuts but there’s no way I’m attempting to pop it because eyelids are so delicate. Any eye makeup remover recommendations? I used to use vaseline which is what I think caused this :(
Lady Harriet
I have them under my eyes, but I almost never wear makeup, so I don’t think that’s the culprit. I also have them on my chin. I’ve never been able to pop one, so I just decided to live with them. They’ve been there for years. They’re not too visible unless you’re very close to my face, in which case they’re the least of my concerns. :)
Anon in NYC
I’ve definitely gotten them. A dermatologist can remove the one on your eyelid. I’ve heard that they can be caused by too much oil / moisturizer in the area, so also check that your eye cream isn’t too heavy (or, I guess, just apply it very lightly).
Parfait
I get them. My derm pops them for me when they get out of hand. She told me to use the Clarisonic on the area and I think it’s helping. Not sure that you can do that right on the eyelid, though. Ow.
E
Humbug it’s like I can’t win. No eye cream, no milia. No eye cream, old saggy eyes yrs from now. I’ll probably make a derm appointment if this doesnt go away.

Runners: would you do a 5K on a rainy night, temps in the upper 40s? My gut says no — I’ll have to hustle to get to the race from work anyway and apparently finding parking is a nightmare — but part of me still wants to do it. (I’m meeting people from my running group for dinner afterwards regardless… it’s just that most of them will actually be doing the race).
Ellen
I am back from Court, and I won 6 out of 7 motion’s! The one that I did NOT win was a motion for attorney’s fees and sanction’s, which I did NOT get granted. The plaintiff said that he was injured, but we have a picture of HIM on the basketball court. The judge said that he could NOT tell if he was just standeing there or playing. I said he had NIKE AIR’s on (not like mine) and short’s so he HAD to be playeing. His lawyer said this was NOT conclusive. The JUDGE dismissed the case, but did NOT award me attorney’s fees and Sanction’s. FOOEY!
As for the OP, I would NOT run on a rainy night with temp’s in the 40’s!!!! Why run at night any way? And if it is in the 40’s you will freeze your tuchus off, particularely if it is rainy and you get soaked. I talked to the manageing partner about this and he said he agreed with me.
We still do NOT have access to the firm’s own toilet. They have to replace the porcelean bowl b/c they broke it when they tried to snake out the toilet. So we just have a stump there which can NOT even be used by Frank or any man for urineation. Now we all go into the hall to make #1 and #2, b/c of Frank’s issue’s. I cant WAIT to move to Park Avenue next year. I have an office with a NICE window lookeing out on Park Avenue. My dad is very proud b/c he was the one who selected MY office from the BLUE Print’s! YAY!
Tomorrow Fred is pickeing me up early so we can eat Italian in Brooklyn. I want a salad with alot of olive’s and mabye some pasta primevera if I starve dureing the day. He said he would drive but I told him we should just take a CAB or the subway. We will have to see how this all work’s out. He is bringeing dog treat’s with him for me to give to Myrna b/c she has a puppy SCHNOUZZER named Xilo. I think Xilo is smarther then alot of men in NYC, tho he also like’s to sniff in place’s he should NOT be sniffeing. FOOEY!
January
OMG, even the manageing partner has weighed in!! YAY!
Monday
Yezzzzz! But if you choose not to I totally get that too. For future info, whether or not you go, I find that a mesh hat with a visor makes a huge difference for running in the rain. I don’t go when it’s pouring, but light to moderate isn’t so bad as long as I can see.
Bonnie
Depends on how hard it is raining. If it’s just sprinking, then I would still run.
Maddie Ross
For me, definitely. I love running in the rain. Especially after dark, but that’s hard to do unless it’s a race where it’s lit and streets are patrolled/closed.
Anon
I would. Running in the rain can be fun as long as it’s not pouring.
Anonymous
I absolutely would. I love running races and upper 40s is really perfect running weather. You will warm up within a half mile (sooner if you actually jog around beforehand to warm up). A 5K is a short enough distance that you won’t be out there in the rain for too long. Plus, its the perfect excuse to get some exercise before dinner and let those endorphins carry through a nice dinner.
Have fun!
Equity's Darling
Yep, I would ,especially if friends were running with me. I recently did a 5 mile race in the snow in -5C weather, up a mountain at night (the race was rerouted because of a bear), with friends, and it was a great experience.
I admit, we ended up walking a fair portion of it, because all the runners packed the snow down into ice and it was very slippery, and sort of steep, but it was such a fun race, we all had glowsticks, and it was actually very pleasant if you were dressed properly. I plan to do this race again every year because it was so much fun.
cbackson
I probably wouldn’t, but honestly, it’s because a 5K is so short that it would feel like a lot of effort for a limited payoff – I’m super-lazy after work. Unless there is an awesome t-shirt?
Yugo18
Yes. I love running in the rain and in cold weather.
(Just the other day I suffered through some strange stares while running in shorts and a sleeveless shirt in low-40s and pouring rain. It’s just fun!
Frou Frou
Yep! My cut off is about 10 degrees and ice on the ground. But I love running in cooler temps, so I might be weird that way.
Wildkitten
I would. I won’t wake up early for rain, but I’d run in the rain after work.
Monte
I wouldn’t not do it because of the rain. The parking, tight schedule, and my hatred of 5Ks — all would be reasons for me not to do it. But a 15K in the rain, and dinner with friends afterward — absolutely!
a lawyer
I learned this from a friend when my second marathon was 40-45 degrees and rained hard almost the entire 26.2 miles: good weather makes for a nice run; bad weather makes for much better stories! Go for it, a 5k will be a breeze in that weather. Take something warm to change in to, dry off with, and go enjoy a warm drink and dinner with friends afterwards!
anon in tejas
I did a half marathon in those conditions (only morning/during the day) and windy. It was tough, but makes for a good story. I’d rather run when it’s that cold than when it’s hot.
Ciao, pues
TJ: baby voices at work. seriously.
I work in a small women-dominated office. Two of my colleagues (both senior to me) have started talking to me in baby voices ever since I’ve started looking more obviously pregnant (months 6 to present– a few weeks to due date). I’m sure they mean it in an endearing way since baby’s clearly on the way, but I find it maddening. I’ve deflected several of the early comments, with “What? I can’t understand you,” but for things I clearly can understand I have no idea how to handle this. My inclination is just to chalk it up to the baby mania of these particular ladies, try to take it as sweet and cooey, and know that it’s almost over. But another part of me wants to be like, “Ladies, let’s talk like adults. Because we are adults. At work.” Have any of you experienced this?
Away Game
No, but that would drive me crazy. I would recommend either just asking politely not to use baby voices or sticking with the blank look and “I’m sorry, could you repeat that?” even if you did understand.
Anon
“Oh, are you talking to my unborn baby? Because you’re using the baby voice, and we’re all clearly adults, so…”
Senior Attorney
Gah. That’s horrifying.
The only thing I can think of is to baby-voice back to them so they can hear how ridiculous they sound. And if they don’t get it, at least you can be entertained by having baby-voice conversations and laughing to yourself about it.
saltylady
All cutesy voices and inflection should be banned at work. My 60 year old assistant greets people by saying “hellooooo THAIRRRRRRRRR.” Like in a sort of faux regal way? Every freaking day. Makes me homicidal.
NOLA
Ack. Our admin asst sometimes starts singing “There she is…” (like the Miss America song) when I walk into her office. Makes me want to choke her.
Susedna
Laughing because this is making me recall that scene in “In a World…” when Lake Bell’s character explains that if your life is on the line, you probably don’t want to be defended in court by a “s#xy baby.”
AEK
Loved that movie!
anon-oh-no
why dont you just smile and not care. I suspect there are way more important things about which to care
Ciao, pues
Because it’s infantalizing, and I care a great deal about the infantilization of women– at work and otherwise. And while I think that my colleagues are truly well-intentioned, we live in a culture that promotes infantilization of women, and reducing women to their biological functions, and marginalizing pregnant women, and those are things I want to actively work against.

Love this– but don’t read much about it before you read it. There are some major spoilers out there. I’m talking to you, NPR book list.
Disagree with espresso bean in that The Interestings is one of my favorite books ever. I think it is a love it or just don’t get what all the fuss is about book though.
I liked Cuckoo’s Calling but don’t know that it’s “top books” list as I keep seeing.

For me, definitely The Goldfinch and Americanah.
Biggest disappointments:
The Circle
The Marriage Plot
The Interestings

Yesssss to The Goldfinch. I just finished and really liked it.
Nod to Americanah

Currently reading The Luminaries…not sure if it deserves all the Man Booker prize/book hype yet. It’s still early though :)
Obviously I love fiction.

Oh, my luminaries is waiting at the post office in an amazon box!I’m hopeful…

Another vote for Americanah. Biggest disappointment was the Dark Road by Ma Jian.

I really liked The Circle and didn’t like The Goldfinch much. It’s also not nearly as good as The Secret History.
I also loved
The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls
The Last Runaway
Indiscretion
The Woman Upstairs
Ordinary Grace
and
The Magician’s Assistant
I read a lot!
Miss Behaved
And I’ve never heard of Americanah so I just sent a sample to my kindle

Americanah seems to be all over the lists, but it doesn’t seem like something I’d usually read, so I’m going for a kindle sample tonight too.
Miss Behaved
Oh, and I also really liked One Hundred Summers. It was a great beach read.
cbackson
I have to say that I was really disappointed by The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls – I so wanted to like it, but I really hate it when a book strings out the reveal of The Big Bad Thing that Happened in the Past in order to create momentum in an otherwise-inert present-day storyline. I also found it super-predictable (I figured out the general outline of said Big Bad Thing, as well as what would happen at the camp itself, within about a hundred pages).
Cb
Americanah was excellent!
anne-on
Uuuugh, I haaated the Marriage Plot and The Interestings. They both ready like not terribly insightful examinations of too much money/influence. And I found the plot line about the rapist brother in the Interestings to be really poorly handled.

I really enjoyed Focus by Daniel Goleman and found myself completely absorbed (focused?) in it on the subway. Luckily I’m on the last stop! I also liked Man Up! by Ross Matthews (Ross the Intern) as a funny quick read. I didn’t really read any great new fiction this year.
2 others that I really enjoyed that are technically 2012 books are Mastery by Robert Greene and How Will You Measure Your Life? By Clayton M Christenson.
cbackson
Hm, I didn’t read that much newly published stuff in 2013, apparently. I will say that I just finished (and loved) Nate Jackson’s “Slow Getting Up” (about life in the NFL).
Tipping help!
I need help with holiday tipping. First question…I live in an apartment complex (about 60 apartments or so) where there’s a leasing office off-site where the general manager and her assistant(I’ve met both but know the general manager better from when I signed the lease) work out of, and there’s also a general maintenance guy (who I’ve met and he’s helped me out several times) who has a part-time assistant (whom I’ve never met). Who do I tip? For reference, I rarely see the general manager, barely see the assistant, see the maintenance guy frequently as I’m going in/out of my car, and once in a blue moon see him with his assistant from a distance. I was thinking only the maintenance guy but am I wrong? Also, how much do I tip? And do I just give plain cash with a card? For reference, I am a graduate student in a 1-bedroom in the suburb of a large city. Rent is about average for the area (about $1100) and doesn’t include any extra services, it’s a nice place but not fancy or anything. And…last question…how do I give the tip? Do I just hand it to him whenever I happen to see him? I’m thinking about this now because I’ll be gone soon for winter break for a while so I have to take care of it within the next week. Thanks in advance!!
Bee
Others may have different thoughts, but I did not tip for the holidays when I was in school. Imo, if you do not have a full-time job, you’re off the hook for holiday tipping. More generally, only ever tip what you can afford – you are not under any obligation to put yourself in financial peril to give someone else a gift.
If I were inclined to tip in your shoes, I would just tip the maintenance guy (cash) and maybe drop off a tin of cookies or something at the leasing office.
rosie
There was a post about this topic in this morning’s thread (I think it was there, at least!). In your case, I would definitely not tip the general manager and the people in the leasing office. I would tip the maintenance people cash (less for the part-time guy) in whatever amount you are comfortable. I would put cash in a card for each of them.
Structured Top
I am on the hunt for a structured top to wear with slim pants and pencil skirts to holiday parties and other events. The top can have some volume, but not overwhelmingly so. I’m basically looking for something that has architectural qualities. Sleeveless or short sleeves as my arms are one of my best features. Has anyone seen anything like this recently?
Price range under $150ish.

How do you feel about peplum?
Structured Top
I would prefer it not to be peplum. I’ve seen a lot of peplum, but I’m on the lookout for something without.
This is inspired by a look I saw in the September issue of Real Simple that featured a structured silk top from TopShop that I can’t find anywhere. I saw the picture in the waiting room of the doctor’s office, so I don’t have any more details! But, it shouldn’t be too hard to find / recreate. The top was cream colored. I’d prefer a color other than black that could be work with black pants.
I had this top and returned it because it was close, but wasn’t exactly working:
