necklace with alternating areas of tiny emeralds and tiny diamonds

Readers have turned me on to the unusual designs of Suzanne Kalan — there are so many cute little diamond earrings and diamond rings, all with the slightly “chunk of stone” look that you see here. I've never seen an entire tennis necklace like this, though, so I had to post.

I'm always a fan of round necklaces like this — I think they're great worn with so many things, but especially crewnecks and collared shirts. The pop of green here is fine, and I honestly don't think it's too blingy for work.

Sure, it's $28,500, but, hey…

(This MIGHT be the most expensive thing we've ever posted? I feel like there are some crazy diamond earrings or at least one other expensive necklace. Hmmn.)

What are your favorite jewelry designers to stalk, readers?

(If you follow Blue Collar Red Lipstick, some of her favorite earrings are on sale and with free shipping — I just may have to get these statement earrings in red for $54.)

  1. Anyone experienced this – as I’ve gotten into my 40s, I find that some months I am EXHAUSTED by day 4 or 5 of my period. Feeling sleepy all day and I would think it would be improved with a cup of coffee but it isn’t. My cycle has gotten heavier but shorter in recent years – like pretty heavy in the first three days but then pretty much done, whereas it always used to be a more consistent four or five days.

Mentioned it to a dr at my last physical and she said everything looked fine but suggested sometimes hormones going back to normal at the end of a period can bring this on. She also recommended eating better as I’m underweight so I may just be feeling it more. FWIW I do remember when I was about 19 being SUPER sleepy during my period yet that was more like day one, not at the end. And back then I didn’t have a job so skipping a college class and taking a two hour nap mid day was NBD. IDK if I outgrew it or what because I don’t remember this kind of exhaustion in my later 20s or 30s.

Tips? Things to eat or not? Is it better to avoid caffeine or does it not matter? Bonus points if there are easy, ready to eat snacks people can recommend. Last night I didn’t even want to stand over the stove and make dinner though I did because I knew I needed a meal.

    1. When a friend about your age felt this way, she was low on iron because her periods had become heavier in her early 40s. I’ve had low iron at various points in my life and then feel how you are describing.Hopefully your doc checked this before saying everything looks fine.

    2. Hi – I have the same issue. I turn 40 this year, and I’m on oral contraceptives. My last period was so tough because it was my first one off of my SSRI. At the time of my last PCP exam in January, I didn’t have low iron (but I’ve had it before).

I love caffeine but it doesn’t really help or hurt. What does help is rest and naps…even ~30 minutes on a WFH day (and longer on weekends if you can).

    3. This happened to me to when I hit my early 40s. It has been a few years now and I honestly have to anticipate needing extra rest and give myself permission to just crash as needed. I have also had low iron during this time so it is worth getting bloodwork done if you haven’t already.

I don’t drink caffeine so I can’t comment on that but I do just let myself eat whatever is easy those days. I generally feel best when I eat a good amount of protein so I try to keep quick things on hand. If you are pretty regular, you might be able to anticipate the days you need those easy meals and stock up.

    4. This was low iron for me. I was taking naps (which I never do), couldn’t even walk back from the train without a stop etc. It was all improved by increasing iron.
If it happened when you were 19 I think that’s just increasing the likelihood that its some amount of iron deficiency.

    5. Ha, I have been soooo tired the last few days so thank you for making me realize why! I do usually take iron and haven’t this week. This explains a lot for me!

    6. It’s sounds like peri menopause starting. My cycle got 2-3 days shorter and symptoms changed too. Don’t worry about your weight. I’m overweight and it’s impossible to lose. I am using midi health for my healthcare as my obn was hopeless with helping address the other hormonal imbalances.

  2. Does anyone make savory waffles? I saw someone on TikTok fleetingly making it, no idea who the creator was, but I remember she was using cottage cheese and cheddar. I cannot find any similar recipes…

    1. Yes – choffles! I think I found my recipe from Gretchen Rubin. It’s just almond flour, eggs and shredded cheese. Yum!

    2. Yes, of course!
I use savoury pancake or dutch bany recipes, there are loads!

    3. One of my favorite restaurants does this with blue corn-based waffles- Hidden Kitchen in Cayucos, CA! Peep their menu for ideas:
-San Luis Sunrise| free range eggs, Niman Ranch bacon ends, avocado, hk sauce
-Monterey Mushroom| sautéed mushroom, bell pepper, and onion, melted havarti cheese, avocado, hk sauce
-Avila Avo| avocado, 1 free range egg, hk sauce, “everything bagel” seasoning, tajin chili salt
-Cayucos Cowboy| free range eggs, smokey black beans, hk green salsa, avocado, hk sauce, cilantro
-Elote Lovin | anaheim + bell pepper, corn, onion & garlic, melted havarti cheese, avocado, hk sauce, hk green salsa, cotija, tajin chili salt, cilantro
-Morro Melt|organic turkey, melted havarti cheese, caramelized onion, avocado, hk sauce, microgreens

  3. I got my ears double pierced today (my piercings closed during the pandemic) and as she was doing it, she said “no swimming for 4 weeks…” Is this a real thing? I was planning to spend most of July floating in the Atlantic with my kid. I don’t tend to go under bur I do get wet.

    1. It’s really about keeping them clean. Swimming is a way contaminants can enter a wound (and a piercing is basically an open wound for a while). So long as you’re extra careful about making sure its clean, spending time in the water is fine.

    2. Depends how dirty the water is. If you’ll be at a beach with higher pollution levels, I’d play it safe and keep them dry.

    3. I was told two weeks so four seems excessive, especially for swimming in the ocean where the risk of infection is lower than a pool.

    4. Give it a few weeks without swimming and then in early July enjoy the ocean but don’t put your head under.

    5. I was advised no swimming for something like 6 weeks when I got earrings put in my ear piercings that were just about closed up.

  4. Venting my frustration. I can’t tell you how many times the question, “who is doing the work?” is met with befuddled looks. This comes up in a lot of ways. Sometimes I get pulled in to help with projects that are in progress, and I need to know who’s doing what. Sometimes I’m asking my superiors or subordinates who they have delegated pieces of a project to. Sometimes I’m asking for coverage while I’m away/unavailable. I just can’t understand it. If you are (1) asked to do work or (2) tasked with delegating work, then you should know who is doing the work! And not just expect it to magically get done! I’m a team player, but I’m realizing that I’m catching a lot of balls that are being dropped by other people on things that are not my responsibility and I’m really getting tired of it.

    1. I think this is something that can be expressed in the moment to the offender. When the question arises and you get a look of befuddlement from a manager, the statement “This is unacceptable, and it is not the first time I have been concerned about this issue.” will get a response, especially if you put it on repeat. A light shaming is sometimes what people need to do better.

      1. There is no workplace I’ve ever been in where saying “this is unacceptable” to someone outright, or engaging in “light shaming” of people wouldn’t cause really serious interpersonal conflict that would have to be resolved.

This is how I know some folks on this s!te don’t actually have jobs, or at least not the high-level jobs folks claim to have.

        1. Right?! The scripts some people come up with here are so out of touch with reality.

          1. Eh, I worked for someone who would do this. She ended up at a pretty high level; downside is she burned through employees pretty fast.

        2. Hmm done of the things said to me on a trading floor are 10x worse than this. Always said by a man, never by a woman.

I agree it’s unacceptable to say anything like this in a workplace. It’s not going to help you at all.

    2. I hear you. I think the reason why there’s no answer is that legitimately, no one knows who was supposed to do that work – there was no comprehensive or effective project management, and so something got proposed and agreed to, but everyone assumed someone else was doing it (this describes my current team to a T). Alternatively, the folks who got tasked with the work haven’t done it, and now don’t want to be called out for making no progress on something they were assigned. So they play dumb.

The other thing that drives me crazy is when people will propose a project, everyone agrees it sounds like a great idea, and then when someone says “okay, so then who will take ownership of that project?” everyone just stares at each other, or at the floor. If no one’s willing to do the work, then the idea really isn’t all that great. In days gone by, I would stupidly volunteer to take on the “brilliant” projects no one else wanted to do, until I finally learned my lesson. Now I only propose projects I’m willing to take on, and for the most part only take on projects I propose (or the ones I know have upper-management backing).

To your point about “catching balls others are dropping” – I have mostly quit doing that, unless it’s something with my name on it, or that has exposure to senior leadership. If it will get me in trouble or make us look bad to the people who allocate our budget, I’ll play clean-up hitter. If not – people need to learn to live with the consequences of their own actions, and constantly cleaning up after people does not get that point across.

    3. It’s not clear what field you are in. In my workplace we have project managers who are responsible for running the project and they track who is responsible for each task. It doesn’t sound like you have this structure.

I was at big4 for 5 long years. What you are describing reminds me of the big4 work environment. It was an extremely toxic environment and there is a good reason why no one wants to be a CPA today. You should not have to ask who is responsible for a task. Either you are the project manager and then you would know, or you are working with the project manager and you ask them.

Happy I did it but happier I left. If you are going to work in a toxic culture make it count. Go to one of the big management consulting firms like Bain or McKinsey or a company that’s toxic but pays well (tech such as Twitter). Just know you’re in a toxic environment. I know you are venting but I’ve found compartmentalization works well at preservation of my sanity.

    1. Very pretty and I would never guess it was mammoth tooth! Just looks like a pretty stone, not weird.

    2. For anything other than 14K or higher gold, my budget is like $30. I would not pay $800+ for costume jewelry.

      1. Yeah, that’s why I haven’t done it and almost certainly won’t. I buy art pretty regularly and spend money on it, but I just can’t get myself to buy costume jewelry even though I know, logically, that it is a form of art and the maker is an artist.

  5. A few weeks ago someone here recommended some shoes that looked kind of like Danskos- wooden platform/clog type heel, leather uppers- but prettier and a different brand. Can anyone help me find this brand? Thanks!

  6. If I interviewed 3 weeks ago for a job and have heard nothing back even though they said they want someone to start late summer….it’s probably a no and they just haven’t communicated that to me while finalizing with the candidate they picked, right? For context, it’s a state agency job….

    1. It’s not a great sign, but I wouldn’t say it’s hopeless. Things tend to slow down in the summer.

    2. Not necessarily. I had positions where they wanted to hire quickly but took way longer (like months). Sometimes they need approval from someone (budget oversight, board, etc.) not brought in earlier for the position, someone else left and they’re reconsidering shape of position, vacations, etc. etc. You name it.

    3. State agency just took 3 months to get me a no. I was pretty darn sure after 2-3 weeks that I was not moving to the next round.

    4. For a state agency, no, I don’t think so. Also we’re still, like, at least 8 weeks out from “late summer.”

      1. You can reach out to HR but for now, I’d assume you didn’t get it and apply to other jobs.

  7. Has anyone ever hired a private investigator? A person who is very dear to me has gone off the radar and hasn’t replied to any of my calls or messages, or sent anything to his daughter in an unusually long amount of time (I’m being deliberately vague) He has had mental health problems in the past with ptsd from time in the army in the 90s and they flare up, but I’m almost always the first to know. I’m hesitant to contact the police because of the ptsd and because the first thing they would do is trace his phone (it’s on my cell phone plan) and I don’t want to him freak and ditch the phone and number as it’s my only way to potentially reach him. Thus the PI question

    1. We looked into this when my cousin disappeared. My best suggestion is to get a recommendation for someone who practices family law in the jurisdiction where your loved one lived – family lawyers often work with PIs and know who is legitimate.

We did not end up hiring someone as, sadly, my cousin’s body was found and it became a matter got the police. I hope that you have a happier outcome.

      1. Thank you, this is a helpful suggestion. His phone still rings so I know it’s being charged and I can tell data is being used on it most days. I’m sorry for your sad outcome
