Thursday’s TPS Report: Cotton/Wool Stretch Skirt

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.
We like this simple cotton/wool stretch skirt, on sale from Brooks Brothers. It's a very classic A-line with a modest cut, and we think it would look great with a cardigan or a slightly feminine blouse. We like that the skirt is fully lined, and impressed that the skirt's fabric is woven by Loro Piana. Was $188, now $94 (sizes 2-14 still left) at Brooks Brothers. Cotton/Wool Stretch Skirt

Ooh! LOVE. It is so difficult to find A-line skirts! It’s a decent price. And it looks great with those boots, which are juuuust about acceptable in my office.
I love it too!
I love that it comes in sizes from to 14, and the price is great… not sure about how the front pleat would fall on my short legs… and if it would look weird if I had it hemmed… but it’s cute, so I want to find out! :-)

Definitely cute — Would want to see how that pleat would work with my short legs – sometimes adorable details don’t translate well in a hemmed-for-petite-people version

Love the boots!
Beautiful skirt. Also love that it’s A-line. Nice pick, C.
As a side note, I own a skirt very similar in style and I am not always thrilled with the pleat right down the middle – I don’t think it’s particularly flattering on my pear-shape. (Admittedly, my skirt is not as nice in fabric or cut quality as the one pictured which may make a difference.) An off-center pleat would be preferable. That said, however, I wear the skirt a lot because I like that it’s just a bit different than a standard pencil skirt. But mostly I wear it a lot because I prefer the pleat over a slit. Slits just give me one more thing to worry about during the day and I certainly don’t need that!
Elle – I’m pear shaped too. Try the Classiques Entier pencil skirts at Nordstrom. I love them and was shocked that they could be flattering on my shape!
Thanks! I’ll have to check them out.
I agree about the center front pleat not being the best style for a pear. I have one skirt like that now and it tends to open up a little too much for it to be that attractive. I’d rather have a pleat/slit in the back than something in the front like this.
Agree. I always think a centered pleat like this one (starting very near to the top of the thigh) makes me look like my thighs take up the full thickness of the skirt!
I’m not picking on Elle here, or anyone else, but can I just say how much I hate the fact that my body type is compared to a specific fruit? I am a size 2 and simply because I have a curvy derriere and a small chest I’m referred to as a “pear.” A lumpy, misshapen, bruised piece of fruit. And it conjures up images of having hips wider than a house. Maybe I can start a trend of saying “curvier on the bottom than I am on top” to describe “pear-shaped” proportions. Frankly, I think a butternut squash would probably describe me better . . .
LOL! I actually love pears (to eat, that is) and I don’t mind the association – I think they are pretty fruits and I would not call them misshapen at all. :) Butternut squash is probably more akin to my body type as well, but just saying that out loud cracks me up. I have also heard people describe our body type as “triangle” or “spoon”, if you like those words any better!
My response didn’t end up going through for some reason. I actually like pears (the fruit, that is) and don’t think they are misshapen at all. :) I’ve also heard our body types being described as a spoon or a triangle, not sure if those are any better though!
I think I’m going to start describing my body shape as a Hershey’s Kiss…
I love it.
Years ago (like mid 1980s) there was a radio for a certain brand of olive oil. The woman’s nasty friend told her to look for the bottle shaped liked her “You know, little on the top, big on the bottom with little ridges running up and down the sides.” I quoted that commercial for years when describing myself. Okay, I don’t have ridges. But, I found it hilarious.
LOL!
Cute!
I recently got an e-mail from LexisNexis saying that 3Ls can get a 15% corporate discount at Brooks Brothers as a part of the LN career prep program. Not sure of the details since BB doesn’t have my size, but that might be a good call for 3Ls!
The ABA also sponsors a 15% BB discount. I’ve used it even on top of sales.
Phi Alpha Delta does too!
I like the skirt, but I suspect that on me the pleat would look odd — especially once I got the skirt hemmed (at 5’2″ if it isn’t already a petite size it has to be petite-ed)
love it!
love it! wished there was a matching jacket, though Im not sure I can envision the cut it would need to be to go with this style skirt.
If the fabric is even close to the quality of most Loro Piana fabrics this is a real deal, the kind of thing you can wear for ages and always feel right in.
This is the second completely random comment I’ve noticed from this poster. Is this spam or am I missing something?
I’m also really confused. If it’s spam, it seems rather random.
I hesitate to click on the link in the name though …
I think they are just trying to get visitors to their site. And I think it’s a rather tacky way of doing it.
Love it. Anyone know if it is available in the store?
Probably not. My experience is BB rarely has a sales rack (at least the one I frequent). The only sales available in store are the buy X#/for Y$ or random promotions like 40% all leather goods. They have an excellent return policy though.
back when I worked at Brooks, there was a sale rack for a short period of time after the season, but unsold leftover product was sent to the outlet stores out of the full price ones
I wish it was available in petites! Cute skirt, and I always love an opportunity to wear my boots to the office.
I love that it has pockets. But it’s still a little outside my price range…
A little bit of a tangent, but what are people’s opinions about boots to the office? I’ve been wearing a pair of flat black boots with an exposed side-zipper to work with my skirts (with tights) and I’m not sure if it’s “appropriate” or not. my thoughts are that they’re less sexy than heeled boots (and therefore more appropriate), but they may not be dressy enough. what do you think?
The day I stopped wearing flat boots to the office was the day a partner asked me if I was going to ride horses after work.
I never wore heeled boots, so now I just don’t wear boots. I’m definitely the exception though.
Actually I am like Anon
I cannot wear boots to the office because flat boots look too equestrian and I am not stable in heeled boots (that means I would easily trip and fall down the stairs)
Not appropriate for exactly the reason you state – not dressy enough. At least, it’s not dress enough for a typical corporate environment, but maybe it would be ok in marketing or another creative field.
Depends hugely on your particular office. Flat boots with tights and a skirt is certainly a younger, trendier, more causal look, but I wear that on days when I don’t have any meetings scheduled with super-conservative partners. (Of course, that will also be the day that the super-conservative partners call a surprise team meeting, which is why I would advocate keeping at least one pair of conservative pumps in black and one in brown behind your desk.)
