Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. There's a lot to like about this simple dress. Sleeves! A nice neckline and hemline! A fitted waist and a flattering, forgiving skirt! A lack of crazy details like exposed zippers and mesh cutouts! Refreshing. I LOVE this dress. Classic silhouette,c overs my arms. With a long necklace and heels, DONE.
I have a cheap version of this-Evan Picone, for $39.99 from Boscovs’ I’m sure not as gorgeous, but same general principle :)
AN
I own several Boss sheaths and they are utter work horses. I machine wash them ( all wool/ virgin wool) and they look as good as new after a zillion washes. I would rather have one Boss dress than 10 other dresses that might be cheaper but of worse quality.
And bonus: they are great for hourglassy, curvy types too.
Romey
That’s a high price for a dress but it’s really beautiful and versatile.
hoola hoopa
Agreed. It’s one of those items that doesn’t excite you at first, but then you realize you are constantly wearing it.
Nice pick, Kat.

This dress would not do anything for me other than to make my middle look pooch-ier than it is, naturally. So not for me. But it looks lovely on the model!
Ellen
Yay! I love this dress, but Sadat is right. Peeople like us have to work out alot to keep our pooches from showing–especialy in the summer when we can NOT wear cardigean sweater’s. In college I knew a pretty girl from Germany who wore sweater’s and pooch dresses but did NOT wash them in Woolite, so when she sweated, they smelled VERY bad. FOOEY b/c guy’s wanted to date her, but could not get close to her. So the lesson is: WOOLITE your sweater’s and pooch dresses. YAY!!!!!!
NYNY
I know that the model is at least 5 inches taller than I am, but still, something about this dress seems off. I want the sleeves shorter and/or the skirt longer. Fuller skirts above the knee look too young to me.
Diana Barry
Agreed, although it says that the dress is 39″ – model must be 5’11” or so.
TXLawyer
Echoing the sleeves shorter feeling. If they dropped just above the elbow I’d love it.

I’ve been sitting here trying to puzzle out what statement you are trying to make re: the Middle East based on your handle of Sadat Work.

I was assuming she was sad and at work, hence “sadatwork.”

Yes I see now that is more likely . . .

Haha, when I saw your comment, I thought I’d missed something because I’d been projecting my own unhappiness about being at work. Time for more coffee.

Fantastic pick. I have a similar dress in camel and always get a zillion compliments when I wear it. I’d love this more if it weren’t black (would love it in hot pink).

A very similar dress in hot pink –

I tried this dress, it looked sad and awful on me. I think YMMV, but the jersey wasn’t structured enough to fit and flare successfully. It just kind of hung there.

This silhouette (flared skirt, elbow sleeves) always says figure skater with a very serious classical routine to me.

OMG. You totally made me have the most palmslap-forehead moment. Whenever I saw “skater” dress, I thought “skateboard” and I was wondering, who the eff are all these young teen skateboard girls and why are they wearing dresses like this???
It wasn’t until just now that I even THOUGHT about a figure skater. That makes a lot more sense.

Suggestions needed: Got ears pierced later than typical – 1.5 years ago – so pardon me for being a little behind on the learning curve here.
I *seriously* struggle to find stud earrings that will stay in my ear. Between wearing my hair down and talking on the phone all day, they end up on the floor or somewhere in my clothing multiple times per week. I’m frustrated to the point that I just haven’t worn them for the last couple of weeks. Are there any tricks, preferred brands, or anything at all to help?
Bonus points if you have tricks for addressing metal allergies… I’ve heard coating studs in clear nail polish…?
tesyaa
Look for studs with larger, sturdier backs is my only suggestion. The tiny earring backs that come with many studs just don’t work. I’ve heard it’s possible to buy earring backs alone, but I’ve never actually done so.
anonsg
I bought earring backs at target. There’s quite an assortment in one little packet of earring backs, so you’re bound to find one that fits snugly on the pair of earrings you want to use them on.
Bonnie
Also look for earrings with screw in backs.
Ru
Wear gold. Get screw posts.
Team goldgoldgold 5eva.
Gemma dress
What’s the highest carat gold you wear in earrings? A friend has a few 24K gold pieces that are so pretty (but, I fear, too soft and too expensive for me). What is typical? And where to get (that I can get to via my computer)?
Wildkitten
Blue Nile
Anon
Higher gold is softer so for earring posts I don’t like more than 10k.
Ru
I have a few 22k and 24k pieces that are very soft but they’re not posts. I’m seeing 21k a lot now in the Middle East – soft and strong. I don’t consider 10k gold. It’s wannabe. 18k is the lowest I’d go, some 14k is acceptable if they’re supporting stones or earring posts. I think of Blue Niles for gems, not gold. I’ve picked up fun pieces from Macy’s, including gold over silver. Serious gold requires in-store purchasing. Overstock randomly has nice gold, too.
If you have a metal sensitivity, go for more pure metals – higher karat gold and/or platinum. Some silver alloys can cause issues, too. Nail polish works but why do that when you can own gold?
hoola hoopa
This. Not gold plated, but actual gold. I find 18k+ for my metal allergy. Gold huggies in particular for your stud issue.
I also have luck with quality silver (not “silver”) and solid titanium. Titanium sounds random, but you can often find it at body piercing salons.
Anonymous
Huggies. True huggies that snap into place, not just small hoops that fasten any old way.
Wildkitten
I wear studs with “butterfly” backs and my earrings have two safety notches so the backs don’t fall off. You can also get screw backs if you want to be really secure – I haven’t seen those on costume earrings though, I think they’re on like diamond studs. You might want to get a pair of really nice screw backs in a metal that you aren’t allergic to, if that would work with your style.
anon
After I lost an earring, my husband ordered a package of backs for me from Amazon. They’re some kind of rubber/silicone substance with a normal earring back (really small size version though) embedded in them. They work great!
Anon
The nail polish thing doesn’t work that well for me – I just buy expensive earrings. If that is not for you Nordstrom has cubic zirconia studs that I think are coated in platinum that I wear frequently. They come in different sizes.
Silver
You can try putting on the little plastic safety tube things (that typically come with hook type earrings) as a back-up measure after you’ve put the back on the post. There are also some earrings that have a bit of rubber in the back and that helps them to stay put. As for allergies, try silver or gold? Clear nail polish works but the irritation might still come through. Screws will def stay put but the posts tend to be thicker.
rook
That’s what I do – put the rubber tube thing on after the regular metal back. You can buy packs of the rubber things at craft stores (or, like, amazon, I guess).
Baconpancakes
The nail polish trick works, but does have to be recoated every once in awhile. I have very sensitive ears, and unfortunately all of my favorite costume jewelry is made of cheap metal, so I just keep an extra bottle of cheap stuff just for my earrings and stocking runs.
Part of keeping them in your ears is just getting used to being more careful with your ears, unfortunately. But do try getting a box of large hypoallergenic earring backs – they sell them at places like Claire’s, and at craft stores. I’ve had success with the large, round, clear plastic ones with the metal in the center, which seems to also have some kind of rubber or grippiness on the inside. They sell ones with slightly smaller than average holes, and those are a pain to get on the earrings, but grip like iron once they’re on. Might take a few tries to buy the one that’s the right size, but they’re very cheap compared to replacing your favorite earrings.
Rachelellen
If you’re in NYC you can go into one of those fashion district wholesalers along Sixth and buy a pouch of dozens of the simple, small backs that grip the earrings like there is no tomorrow. I’ve actually had the opposite problem a few times- the post pulls clear off the earring.
nutella
I echo all the suggestions above. Also, are you still using the ones you were pierced with? I don’t even deem those to be real earrings but just for the piercing itself. If the backing is just a metal tube, the earring will slip right out. There needs to be more friction or gripping. Butterfly backings, notches on the post, screw-in backings, backup rubber tube/stoppers, or huggies that click will all help. And, as mentioned above, part of it is learning to wear them and be a bit more careful. Good luck! I love earrings – they are the only jewelry I wear everyday and feel naked without!
Jordan
I guess this isn’t relevant to the earring itself but I got a headset because cradling the phone just hurt my neck and ears from my earrings. It makes me look silly but it saves my ears so I do not care. Otherwise I second the screw in backs, earrings that have a loop with no back (similar to clip ons look but not) and rubber backs that do not move.
I am the same with bracelets though. Because of typing, they always end up off sitting on my desk unless they are very light or very tight.
Rachelellen
Agh. I lost a watch this way in a lab in the final frenzied days of grad school. It was cheap but pretty and sturdy and versatile.

TJ – I made some mistakes on a project. It turned out ok, but the process should’ve been better/more transparent. Do I put this in writing, in an email to the project manager, or to my supervisor (2 different people). My instinct is no. There will be a conference to discuss the fact that “mistakes were made” (by the PM, too). But my instinct is not even to say “some of the mistakes made were on my part” in an email. Or is owning up better? Can’t see how. Thoughts?
OttLobbyist
I think you need to be prepared to take responsibility for any errors you made, and find a way to demonstrate that you know what you could have done differently, and will do in the future. I am not sure if an email is ideal, or if you wait until the meeting. As a supervisor, I would have a lot more faith going forward in a person who can say “I messed up, but have learned” than someone who didn’t.
TXLawyer
I think the conference is the appropriate forum to discuss how improvements in the process could minimize missteps in future projects. No need to put it in writing prior to the meeting that has been set up for the purpose of addressing this issue!
Anonymous
Agreed. Go. Participate openly. But no need to go outside the process.
Middle Coast
Discuss but don’t document unless you are told to do so. Documents can live a long time and come back to bite you.
Moonstone
Better to summarize after the meeting what you heard so you can reinforce with your bosses that you paid attention and understand what you need to change for next time. Graciously accepting feedback is good; documenting ahead of time some shortcoming that your boss may not even care about is like volunteering to take all the blame for all the problems.

+1 They do sort of have a pilgrim vibe. Although sometimes the right outfit can inform the style of the shoe. Kind of like how sometimes a dress looks awful on the hanger and amazing on.

Well I was going to say that they aren’t work appropriate, but as a “Medic” you probably aren’t in a corporate office setting, so that’s not true. I can’t help you. Fire away, if you love them.
Blonde Lawyer
I think they are work appropriate and they are on sale. My hesitation is if you live somewhere wet and mucky in the fall and winter where the suede would just get ruined quickly.

They’re extremely unstylish.

I like them. The green is nice and they look like they’d be comfortable. Yeah they’re utilitarian looking, but who cares if you’re on your feet all the time, as I assume a medic is? Go for them.
Ru
I like them. Fancy enough for the office but not too fancy for site visits. Perfect hybrid shoe.
Medic Maggie
Hmm. I was hoping not to miss the mark with this pair. I work in business casual daily, so “work appropriate” for us basically says “if you can wear it, you can wear it to work”. Not that extreme, but there are plenty of folks in our small office who wear jeans daily. I’m not 100% sold on them, but the green suede with a little wedge reads like a new alternative to a pair of flats, which is what I wear in the office most. I would be pairing these with trousers or dark jeans, with the occasional skirt and tights. I’ve been accused of having pretty terrible taste in shoes, so the first impression reaction from some of you is meaningful–both good and bad. Now I am torn.
anonsg
If you love them, get them. Don’t let someone else’s judgment of your taste in shoes prevent you from buying something you really like and really want to wear. As long as it’s work appropriate, and you love them, I think it’s fine.
Alanna of Trebond
They are hideous.
Unicorn?
Help me find my unicorn? I have been looking for a pair of brown leather knee high boots with a 2-3″ heel (bonus for a platform in front) under $200 for ages! I have looked at all the usual suspects, Nordie’s, z@appos, six pm, over$stock, and can’t find the right pair. Anyone want to do some vicarious shopping?
I have flat boots but somehow I think with tights and dress/skirts, a little heel looks a little more put-together. What do ya’ll think?

I don’t know, but when you do find them, let me know. I saw some on Nordstrom’s, but they had a 3 inch heel – I want something shorter. Maybe I also saw some Nine West brown leather boots with a wedge heel there? Can’t quite remember, I was doing a lot of boot searching last night.
I am frustrated by how all the brown boots have bric-a-brac on them – I don’t want buckles and straps and things, just plain brown boots. I don’t know why designers see brown leather and think, “Cowboy!”
I’d suggest Amazon, but dang their search function for shoes is bad. Hard to believe they once ran Endless.com (sniff, sniff, I miss them so).

Totally agree about the doodads on all the boots these days. I’m not about to ride a motorcycle, geez. Also agree, I wish it was easier to narrow things down on Amazon.

Thanks for the d$w rec- I didn’t know you could shop them online!
I found these, which I kind of like if the tassle on the zipper could be removed. I think I would like the tassle on the zipper if I worked in an old west saloon.

I thought those were the unicorn once. I bought them last fall from Nordie’s at full price. Unfortunately the leather wrapping on the heel peeled off, revealing the plastic heel. It was not nice. Maybe that was a fluke pair? I allllllmost would try them again for 107 instead of 225…

Oooh…. that’s not good! I never had problems with Sam Edelman shoes though, my experience has generally been good quality for the price. What do you mean by leather wrapping on the heel? Back of the foot? B/c the heel itself looks like stacked “wood”….

At least on last year’s version, the heel looked like stacked wood but was really plastic covered in a suede-ish material. I am super tempted to buy another pair (returned the first ones) in hopes that it was a fluke. Hrm.

Need your advice, friends. I had a mole removed from my forehead about 9 weeks ago. Apparently, the wound “opened up” and now I have a small hole/dent in my face. The kicker? I’m getting married in two months (or rather, 9 weeks–so exactly the same amount of time that has passed from when I did it).
I am really self-conscious about the scar and the doctor doesn’t think it’ll get much better. She does think that she could reopen the wound and do a longer stitch to close it all up. But to do so, we’d be starting at zero and it’s unclear how well it would turn out (though she did a great job on a previous, smaller one) or how it would look by my wedding.
Should I leave well enough alone and just try to cover it with make up? Or should I take a chance and see if she can fix it? The latter would also mean postponing/cancelling my engagement photos.
Thanks in advance. I know it’s shallow but it’s been upsetting me.
TXLawyer
I wouldn’t have the doctor mess with it any more at this point.
See if whoever is doing your make-up will do a test run, at least for the basic cover-up. And if that doesn’t work, ask your photographer to give it special attention in editing. Photoshop is wonderful.
A I
Go see a plastic surgeon ASAP. They can do amazing repairs-it’s their job!
Diana Barry
+1, plastic surgeon NOW, not the same dr.
OTC options
Try vitamin E capsule with liquid in it – pierce it open and smear the liquid on the scar. Twice a day. It helped me recover from a burn. There are also OTC patches that are scar minimizers. Try these in ADDITION to talking with a real doctor – NOT instead of!
Carly
Don’t do this without testing first! I slathered vitaminE all over a surgery scar and when it got worse rather than better (red, inflamed, puffy), I learned I’m allergic to vitaminE, which is very common. I had used it topically before with no problem, but it was bad news for a surgical scar. Anyway, I definitely wouldn’t let it near my face without being very sure.
January
Agree – if the doctor in your original post is not a plastic surgeon, you need to see one asap.
Ebro fin
I agree with Carly, don’t ever rub anything on a wound unless your doctor says it’s OK. I recently used Neosporin on some abrasions after an accident and a terrible reaction. My dermatologist said no, no, no. Either come to us or use Vaseline, but don’t use any of these things.
Frankly, with 9 weeks I’d have the plastic surgery, take exquisite care of the wound, and have it photoshopped out of the engagement photos.
mascot
Assuming that cutting bangs isn’t an option, talk to your photographer. Chances are this can be edited out in post-processing of the pictures. Yes, it may still be a bit visible in person, but the framed shot on your mantle won’t bother you forever.
AIMS
Yep. Photoshop it out. No one will notice it in person because they will be looking at all of you, and it won’t be there in all your pics because technology is magic.
Anon
So a facial blemish is pretty easy to fix in Photoshop – don’t cancel the shoot without talking to your photographer. In the meantime, I’d consider talking to a plastic surgeon – might have more ideas than a dermatologist.
Sarabeth
I should say, the original doctor is a plastic surgeon. Not a bad idea to contact someone else, though I do think she’s offering to do it for free and I’d expect to shell out another $600 for a different doc.
Sarabeth
Anyone have a good recommendation for a better plastic surgeon? :)
lawsuited
If the dent/scar bothers you, and doing the procedure now would likely result in no scar or a less noticeable scar forever, then it seems that you should do the procedure. You’re better off covering up/photoshopping out the healing stitches (if that’s even that it would look like in 9 weeks) in your wedding photos rather than having to cover up the dent/scar every day forever. IMO, engagement photos are not a big deal, so postponing/cancelling them for a medical procedure would be justified for me.
FVNC
I agree with the suggestions to see a plastic surgeon. When I had a large basal cell removed in my early 20s, the dermatologist didn’t even attempt to close the wound; I went straight to plastic surgeon. They can do wonders, but you may be too close to the wedding now to do anything beforehand — although you can find this out in a consult.
(Former) Clueless Summer
A friend of mine had a dent scar somewhat fixed with an injection of some sort (I kind of think it was steroids but I really have no idea). It basically filled in the dent for a while. Not sure if something like that is an option. I would think your doctor would have suggested anyway though!
Pesh
Little known fact: Castor Oil is amazing at helping wounds heal and preventing scars/making scars less noticeable. It has something to do with increasing cell-turnover I think. I was desperate a few years ago after an injury across my eyebrow before an event. I got some castor oil from Amazon, and every night rubbed a little warmed castor oil on it. Worked so well.

Baconpancakes
Eh, I’m not sold on multi-vitamins, but the article’s title is inflammatory. The studies covered show no memory loss change in over 65 yo men, minimal benefits to cataract prevention and cancer prevention, and minimal to insignificant benefits to overall health. But prenatal vitamins clearly work, melatonin definitely works, Vitamin D supplements, increased iodine (in salt in many places but not all), and calcium all definitely work. I’m annoyed by the sweeping generalizations being made about vitamins being useless when many of the people taking them already have balanced diets and don’t need multivitamins for general health, but might greatly benefit from something specific added to their diet, like fish oil for acne or Vitamin B12 for certain types of anemia.
Sorry, that went off-topic a bit.
Anon
I think the problem is that there is no conclusive evidence that taking a multivitamin is good for you. Taking Vitamin D is good if you have a Vitamin D deficiency, and calcium is good if you have a calcium deficiency, but if you over consume these, you can give yourself kidney stones. If you take a vitamin with iron in it, that’s actually been associated with poorer health unless you’re low on iron.
If you’re pregnant, there are known benefits to taking a prenatal vitamin, but no one can say whether or not it’s necessary to take them after pregnancy. It seems to make sense that they’d be good for you, but there’s no evidence that it’s true when you’re not pregnant. Something like folate is good for a developing baby, and people know that eating more folate will decrease your risk of diseases such as colon cancer, but studies have shown that taking it in vitamin form has no demonstrated effect. Then there are other studies that show that multivitamins are both make cancer outcomes worse and sometimes slightly better. The NYTimes Well blog has a bunch of stories on individual studies. So basically, more studies show no benefit or harm, but there are some that show benefit. It’s a pretty difficult thing to study.
If the question is, “Should people take a multivitamin for health reasons,” the answer is no. Nutritionists will tell you that there is no reason to take them if you have a healthy diet and do not have any vitamin deficiencies. But if you are questioning whether or not they’re good or bad for you, the result is unknown.
Anon
I wouldn’t take a multi-vitamin. If you have a specific health concern or deficiency, take a specific vitamin just for that.
Miz Swizz
Thanks for the input. I don’t have a specific health concern or deficiency, I’m looking for a supplement to my decidedly okay diet. I realize there isn’t a magic pill for nutrition but I also realize I need a little boost in some areas.

The obvious possibilities don’t apply here: he doesn’t want a ring right now (though he will wear a wedding band), he doesn’t wear a watch, and he doesn’t need a wallet upgrade.
My only idea so far is to get a nice bottle of wine or other alcohol from this year that is intended to age a certain number of years–sort of a celebration for the future. Only hiccup there is that I don’t drink, so I don’t actually know if that’s a viable present notion.
Can anyone offer guidance on the wine idea or other suggestions? Thanks!

Port would be an option for this, and has the added benefit of being a bit more special/different that just wine. Especially if you’re not wine aficionados, it might be a nice alternative.

Ditto this – my husband and I like to give nice bottles as first communion gifts, to be opened on 18th birthday (this is in the UK where that is the drinking age). We try to get the person’s birth-year vintage, but in your case you wouldn’t be able to get this year’s vintage immediately – it ages for more than a year before bottling. Also, not all years will be vintage years. But you could pick up an older bottle now, to drink in five years or so.

I’ve been wondering about this as well – I’d like for there to be a men’s equivalent of the engagement ring. It feels one-sided, which I dislike, but I really like shiny things, so I still want one.
Wildkitten
My enjoyment of shiny things overrides all my issues with the patriarchal contract of engagement pretty fast.

I got my husband a custom tailored suit. He looks super hot in it, he wore it for our wedding and will get to wear it for years.
Ru
Oooohhh, an engagement suit. That’s a great idea.

Artwork? Stock or bond? Tree (if you’re living in your permanent home)?
Definitely go to a reputable wine store for that purchase. Not all wine will get better with 20 years. I also suggest that you consider how long you’ll be able to reasonably store the wine at ideal conditions. For example, if you’ll be making a cross country move in 2 years, you may want to hold off or plan to drink when that time comes.

If you’re still reading…
If you want to go the wine route, find a good, well reputed store in your area, go in, and ask for recommendations.
Other options–an engraved tie bar, if he’s the tie bar type? Or cufflinks? Or a “special occasion” watch (I couldn’t tell if he doesn’t like wearing watches, or just doesn’t wear them on a regular basis).
If you want to get a bit more spendy, what about a nice camera? To take photos of all the awesome things you’ll be doing together in the future.

Ummm if you click on the cheaper option link, look at the model’s calf muscle. That is clearly a bad photoshop job! Tsk. And so unnecessary too.

Yikes that is bad!! And sad…

Here’s a really cheap version–$27.99 at Target. Saw it in the store but they didn’t have my size so I couldn’t try it on. I’ve had luck with Target dresses before, I might order this one.

Oh hey, I like that. I am already planning a Target stop today; I might just have to look for it.
Midtown Manhattan recs
Thanks to those who offered rec’s to do a little shopping this morning after my meeting & before heading to the airport. I looked through a bunch of stores…even though many are the same brands I’ve shopped in other cities, the selection is much better in these big flagship shops.
Here’s what I managed to pick up. (hey, I only had an hour to shop!)

Oh and I did stop by City Bakery and picked up a Pretzel Croissant and a Jumbo Chocolate chip cookie. Yummy!

If anybody is on the hunt for their fall boots, I’ve just ordered the Tahari Rupert Riding Boot from DSW for $150. I’m hoping these will finally be the unicorn boot I’ve been looking for- Under $200 black leather equestrian boots on the sleek side, with a low/ flat heel and NO HARDWARE ( I hate matching it to my jewelry/ handbag), but with some sort of detail so they aren’t boring. Hoping they fit and are comfortable.

I just bought this dress from Banana – http://www.bananarepublic.com/products/res/mainimg/tweed-fit-and-flare-dress-black.jpg – it is black, heavy tweed and knee-length (on me). How do I wear it to work? The heavy tweed is throwing me off. Thanks!
Brit
This might sound weird, but it may work (?). I could see black tights/shoes (heels or flats, your preference) and then a cardigan in pretty much any color. I think the black tights would balance out the heavy material…

Tights are a great idea – thanks!
