Suit of the Week: Veronica Beard

For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional. Corduroy suits: yea or nay? I tend to like them better as separates, to be honest, but this rust- colored suit from Veronica Beard looks great. (I like it even better in the navy, but they don't picture the blazer with the pants there.)
Although in the picture above it looks like the blazer is double-breasted, it's actually a single button, single-breasted blazer; I like the slightly wide lapels. You can add one of the Veronica Beard dickeys to it, also, if you'd like.
The jacket is $798, and the pants are $498; both are available in sizes 00-16.
(Also: can we agree that the brunette model's pants are too short for those heels?)

I know nothing about trading cars in; my family has always bought and driven into the ground. If I have an 11yo car with an incredibly loud engine due to “reasons the dealer can’t find” is it still worth investigating or is tradein more for newer cars? This one is a Subura fwiw.
If that was the only complaint I would keep it after having a local mechanic have a look. The dealer is incentivized to steer you to trade in/purchase.

I’m going on a double date with a couple I have very little in common with. They are both tech founders, and there is definitely a bit of ego / main-character-syndrome / Silicon-Valley-is-the-center-of-the-universe energy. Does the hive have any recommendations for having a nice time with people you don’t particularly relate to? Are there topics that are universally interesting or good for getting to know people on a deeper level? I know my husband values and would like to deepen this friendship, so I’d like to put in some effort.
Listen to them talk. Think of how this could be a good mystery / Anthropology PhD background research.
I treat these outings like ethnographic research and like observe the culture and ask tones if questions. Study them like a remote isolated community. It works because people LOVE talking about themselves and I’m not going into it trying to enjoy these people so much as learn.
My rec for conversing with people with different interests/experiences is finding ways to ask questions about theirs areas of interest that are interesting to you. And – it’s an easy way to keep the convo flowing, as most people can easily talk about themselves. For instance (as a non-tech person), I might ask follow up questions about the product development/creative parts of their job, the unique/quirky characters they work with, interesting people they’ve met while working. And the old non-work standbys of movies/tv, travel, food are always good options.
how often do you waste time on Zillow? in your neighborhood, on vacation, general dreaming?
My husband and I like to look at it together – sometimes we’re daydreaming about alternate lives we could be leading, sometimes we’re imagining something we might actually be interested in, and sometimes we are just making fun of houses together. We don’t do it too often, but maybe an evening once a month we’ll do one of these things. On my own, I find checking our home value weirdly reassuring, and I probably do that once a week or so.
A lot. I like to have a general idea of what’s going on with real estate in my neighborhood (for no productive reason, we’re not moving anytime in the foreseeable future). Relatedly, I’m also one of those people who will walk through any open house in my neighborhood. I always scroll through Zillow when we’re visiting anywhere on vacation just to see. I feel like any good vacation involves a fantasy about moving there full time!
Almost never. I check our home value a couple times a year because it’s a decently big part of our net worth so I like to know the value. Beyond that, I don’t use Zillow at all.
Any good formal work clothes, shoes, or bag finds recently?
I will be on a cruise next month in the Med visiting Mallorca, Sicily, Sardinia and the Spanish and Italian coasts. Any recs for novels set in this area? I have The Sicilian Inheritance on my list since I’ve enjoyed the author’s other books.
I am trying and failing to read The Leopard, which is a big deal novel in Sicily. I read a murder mystery series set in Mallorca a decade ago after a visit. It was only average but I enjoyed it. I’ll see if I can find the name of the author. I’m also interested in hearing recommendations.
I heard the movie adaptation of The Leopard is really good too.
The quartet of books by Elena Ferrante might be fun! There are some trips to the seaside in them
why are so many dresses mini dresses, is a short dress that is 2 inches above the knee no longer a thing? also i hate puff sleeves, they make me look much wider
I like a very moderate puff, something that tapers into my arm instead of just extra fabric flapping.
