I need to get some sweaters for the winter. There are a post last week about where to get them but I need some help on how does one go about picking a sweater that doesn’t make the wearer look big and highlight the belly?
Ellen
Stay away from Cardigans, as you probably also have a tuchus that Cardigans kind of highlight, saying in effect, “I am wearing a Cardigan but have a big tuchus!” Don’t go down that route; sticking instead to cashmere that is not to loose or to tight, but very soft. When men cozy up to good cashmere, they tend to overlook things like bigger tuchuses (tuchi?) and bigger bellies, particularly in winter when you give off the signal that romance may be in the air for them if they play their cards right. In the summer, when we tend to throw off a lot of heat, the last thing we want is a sweater, but now that there is a little chill in the air, men love to nuzzle in, so this is where the cashemere comes in. Go to Macy’s or Saks for the best selection at a reasonable price, and good luck to you!

Why is this comment geared toward what men would think? Please stay away from giving advice.

Mom is 75 and has some physical limitations (walks with a cane), but is mentally sharp. Dad is declining physically, but more mentally (dementia). She has a couple drawers of “important papers” that she reminds me about in case of emergency. They are a bit disorganized and who knows whether all their “important papers” are actually in there. How do others handle this? …I mean verifying the contents of the drawers and lock box, organizing them, etc. Mom will probably resist a bit saying everything is in there, but do others take the lead to verify and organize? Is that a best practice? I want to avoid any surprises and lack of information ….my husband has closed estates for his mother and grandmother and I remember how he had to track down and investigate things because of the lack of documentation. Any advice is much appreciated….

I would just ask her to explain it to you. I don’t think that’s unwarranted.
Also– do you have PoAs for your parents?
anon
Hi, OP here…. yes I’ll ask her to explain….yes, I have PoA and my brother is an alternate…does that make a difference?
Anon
No– that is just something I wanted to give you a heads up for in case you weren’t prepared.
But yes, generally someone gives you the “keys to the kingdom” when you are going to be asked to handle their affairs.

I’d approach her with a “Can you walk me through all this so I can understand, and ask you questions and make sure I understand things from your perspective — what you want me to do, what’s important to you, how you want me to handle things? That way, if there’s a time we hit an emergency — like something with Dad — you can be free to help him with what he needs and I can help you without you having to try to sort things out for me or try to get me to understand what you want or what arrangements you’ve made. We’ll have gone over it all and I’ll have made notes for myself so I can remember what’s what.”

Wow, OP here….what a great talk track! Thank you! I will definitely use this approach…

This approach is how I got my grandmother out of her house. “You’re fine now, but let’s look at options so if the time comes and you need to make a move, we know where you want to go and what you like.” She found a dream condo two weeks later and was thrilled about the move. Making it about creating options rather than pushing her was what worked. Good luck!
