  1. I thought BR was discontinuing their Jackson pants? Wow, clearly I haven’t shopped for work clothes in a few months. Those are my favorite pants; it is great to see they apparently are back.

I was told sometime in the summer that they were discontinuing that fit, which made no sense to me because it was the only one that was curvy and surely ALL women don’t want slim fitting pants. I guess they got enough protests to change the plan.

    1. Funny you say that — I am curvy and the Jackson cut looks awful on me. But if I have learned anything from this site, it is that what looks awful on one person looks stunning on the next. I am jealous.

      1. Same here. I’ve really only had success with the Martin fit, I thought Jackson was for a straighter shape. Maybe I’ll try it again!

    2. I’m curvy and wear the Jackson fit well. Glad they aren’t discontinuing them.

      1. I stand corrected — no suit jacket to match the “winter wool” flannel trouser, but BR also has this cut in the lightweight wool, which does match the lightweight wool suit jackets.

    1. My wool flannel suit (from J.Crew) is my absolute favorite, and I wish I owned 10 of them!

  2. bought these in 2 colors recently. Great fit, as expected from BR Jackson. These are fully lined. And several of the colors have matching suit jacket (I have both black & grey).

  3. I’m sure these would look great on me, if only they were not pants.

    1. Ha ha! I know, I hate pants! Every time I try to make myself buy a pair, I remember why I hate them so much! Skirts rule!

    2. Do you mind if I ask what your body type is? I am the opposite. I look better in pants. Skirts, particularly anything at, above, or just below my navel just look ridiculous on me. Not enough space between the skirt and my big boobs – makes my not fat tummy look VERY pouchy, etc. Lower rise pants look great on my long legs and make my torso/legs look proportional. They also manage to make my big boobs look less big.

I’m not trying to sell you on pants, just ask what body type is better flattered by skirts.

      1. For me, not only are most pant inseams too short (6′ tall here), but I’m an hourglass with apparently a very tricky torso length. Most low rise pants are obscene on me and medium/high rises are way too high. Just easier to deal with skirts for me.

  4. Threadjack — I need to find a blue velvet/velveteen blazer, but can’t seem to locate one. Any ideas? TIA!

    1. I got a lovely dark blue velvet blazer from JCrew — it’s called the schoolboy blazer, available in regular and petite.

    2. Also check LLBean Signature collection — they have a velvet blazer in plum, but I think there are other colors.

  5. These are really nice! I have never worn the jackson fit before. Will definitely try out! Thanks C!

  6. Those pockets will not look at all flattering on me, I can already tell. I much MUCH prefer horizontal pockets, or none at all.

    1. I don’t like side pockets either but my solution is to either a) leave the seams in or if that’s not an option, to b) have them cut our/sewn shut.

    2. All my Jackson Fit pants/shorts came with pockets that were sewn or buttoned shut and they look fine on me.

  7. I love slanted pockets! I am “hippy” in the physical, not political sense, and I find them to be very flattering.

    1. Where do you work? I don’t think those would work in my office, or any office I’ve worked in, even for biz caz. That said, I have no idea what industry you’re in, etc.

    2. Personally, I think they are too slouchy for the office. (I’m not sure how to describe the folds/wrinkles). I’ve seem some cute boots that do incorporate a little bit of slouch that look office appropriate, but I think these boots go too far with it and end up being more casual.

        1. The high heel plus folded down top makes me think of a sultry pirate halloween costume. So, probably not a good choice for work.

          1. I don’t think those would work in most offices.
The ones above are also a bit too trendy/vampy for most offices, in my opinion, even though they are flats. Something about them is just a tad much (maybe their height?)

I have these in my cart at 6pm & think that they would probably work in just about any office in which boots are acceptable. And, for the price, unless I am not seeing something, it’s hard to see how you can go wrong, so I will probably pull the trigger before the end of the day (they come in reg. leather & in different colors, too).

          2. AIMS I’ve had those in my cart for 2 days! I can’t decide between the black (my closet is awash in a sea of black boots) and the grey (I am a stain waiting to happen). I’ve never tried this brand but the reviews are encouraging me to size up.

          3. @ c2 — I have had fairly good luck with this brand in the past. I also have been reluctant to actually buy b/c I do have other black boots, but I don’t think I have black suede flat boots & the price is just too tempting. Plus, they seem fairly likely to stand the test of time so even if I don’t wear them much now . . . Oy, now I’ve talked myself into it!
If you decide get the gray, which is lovely, just get some stain protector & treat them before you wear. It always helps :)

          4. Oh I just bought the boots in black! I’m excited. I hope they fit well, I have wider calves, but usually 15 inch boots just fit me and these are 15.5inches!

  8. (For the nth time) BR’s sizing is pretty consistent, right? Is a 14 Martin a 14 Jackson, differences in cuts aside?

Also, what cold-weather flat shoes would go with these?

    1. Their sizes are consistent, but as a loyal Jackson wearer, I’m always bummed when I try on the Martin cut. They “fit” but the just don’t look right. IMO, if you can pull of one, you can’t manage the other very well.

      1. Agree with this, I can only wear the Martins. The Jacksons look like they were made for another species altogether when I try them on. Not really sure why. (When advertising speaks of an item of clothing and says the “fit” is fabulous in a generic sense, I don’t understand this– there is almost no item that is universally fabulous for everyone. For example, when people say designer jeans have a fabulous fit, that only makes sense if they fit you at all–which they don’t for me. )

      2. I feel almost exactly the same. The Martin cut works well on me; the Jackson “fit” but don’t look great. I don’t think they are interchangeable at all.

      3. Can I ask what body shapes you ladies have and which fit works better on you? I love to order clothes online, but I’m afraid to do it for pants. Maybe if I had a point of reference. Thanks!

        1. I’m pretty straight up & down – 5’7″, 115lbs. I have relatively long legs (33″ inseam) and a fairly flat bum :-(.

          1. BR Addict, you have me confused. The advantage of the jackson fit for curvy girls is an extra inch of so of fabric in the butt and thighs, without increasing the waist. If you’re straight with a flat behind, I’d expect them to be very ill-fitting. That said, I LOVE the jackson fit pants. They’re the only pants that fit my big butt and thighs properly without any alterations. I can wear the martin pants, but I need to size up and then have them altered in the waist.

          2. Jeanne: Uh oh. Now you have me worried. When I was heavier, I wore one, and then when I lost weight I switched to the other. I belive you are correct. My reduced self wears Martin, my more generous self used to fit nicely into the Jackson.

E Anon: Thanks for the vote of confidence! Must. Love. Self.

        2. Supposedly the Jackson is for those who are curvy — more butt, ample thighs, etc. The Martin fit is better if you are more straight up and down.

With that said, I am curvy and the Jackson fit does not work on me. Can’t put my finger on why exactly, but it doesn’t look good. Neither does the Martin fit, by the way. I have had most success with Halogen and Classiques Entier pants at Nordstrom, and the Editor pant at Express (but go up a size, otherwise you’ll look hoochie).

        3. I am a pear with a long torso and the Jackson fits me well. I’ve tried the Martin fit and the main issue is the rise- it’s just too low to fit me right.

        4. I’m 5’4″ with a long rise and no waist. I’m shaped like a barrel with a big belly and big hips but flat butt. The Martin fits like a dream!

          Thanks everyone for your comments.

    2. I’ve found I can go one size down in Jackson, but that might be body-specific. Then again the sizing in most brands I wear seems to be just an educated guess—except in suiting, which somehow seems more consistent within brands.

  9. Sorry, threadjacking-

I’ve been looking for nice, low heel, good quality beige pumps that don’t cost an arm and a leg for a while and 6pm has the Cole Haan Air Miranda for $87, which is a great bargain. The issue is that I’m anywhere from 10.5-11 and the pair they have left is 10.5. I’ve read conflicting reports on sizing and was wondering if any of you fine Corporettes had firsthand experience with the shoes/how they run size-wise/if they stretch?

    1. I am between sizes in Cole Haans. In almost all brands I wear a 6.5. I have one pair of CHs in a different style, and I was able to make a 7 work well (I really thought they ran small), but in the Air Miranda, I stepped out of the 7 when I walked and the 6.5 sqeezed so much I just couldn’t keep them. I hope you don’t have my same problem and are able to snap up a good bargain, but I think they run small, and, particularly in patent leather, are very unforgiving.

    2. Cole Haans run small in heels, true to size in their more open-toed, relaxed, loafer like shoes, in my experience. I have been wearing Cole Haans for about 20 years.

      1. Thanks to both of you for the input! That’s what I was worried about. Must be the shoe gods telling me to look elsewhere :)

  10. What does Jackson cut mean – is it wide legs and somewhat fitted at the thigh? What makes it Jackson?

Was just in the big flagship Banana in San Francisco, and will say that what they have is great looking and the fabrics are beautiful.

    1. Jackson fit pants have a little extra fabric in the butt and thigh areas, so they’re less “fitted” in the hips and thighs.
