Dana Kellin Black Spinel, Black Cubic Zirconia Jeweled HoopsSomething on your mind? Chat about it here. Wowza: stunning earrings from Dana Kellin's higher end line. She has a number of pieces where the stones are on the inside of an open frame, like this; I like this particular earring because the frame with the stones is separate from the part that loops through the ear — meaning they will have a bit of movement and twirl. They're the perfect statement for an evening out, whether they're accessorizing a simple pair of jeans or a great “hot mama” dress. The earrings are $440 at Endless. 2. Don’t know if this is too late for the open thread but wanted to get your opinions about something. My husband and I are arguing about how to raise our son – particularly over what to feed him. I always offer healthy snacks at home (i.e. fruits, whole grains, etc) and always discourage candy and too many sweets. However, he’s started kindergarten and I’ve noticed that he doesn’t eat lunch. I always give 1% milk, fruit and a sandwich of some sort but he doesn’t eat much of it so I’ve been supplementing his lunch with a cupcake or something that he would eat (yes, high sugar foods) and maybe get a few extra calories from his lunch. My husband think its a bad idea and would rather we not give him lunch so he’ll just come home hungry and get the healthy foods we have at home. Either that or just pack his lunch full of veggies and fruit hoping he’ll get hungry and eat it (this method I’ve tried and my son didn’t eat anything at all until he got home). We are arguing over which method is best. I would rather my son get some extra nutrients (yes, cupcakes and chocolate can be nutritious if you’re not eating anything else) than nothing at all.

I’m upset because this is not the first time we’ve talked about this. He doesn’t seem to understand the issue behind why I’m giving our son these items. He bases what he thinks on what his “friends” do and doesn’t believe me. I am upset that he would question me about this issue when I’m the mom and nutrition person in the family. About us: he’s an accountant and so are all his “friends”. I have a masters in nutrition and a doctoral degree in health and medicine. My friends and/or colleagues are people in the health field like doctors, registered dietitians and trained researchers. I’ve dealt with these issues professionally and think I know what I’m talking about when it comes to our son’s eating situation. It makes me mad to have to always defend myself to my account husband who knows nothing about the issue. He can’t even tell the difference between a carbohydrate and a protein!

    1. If your child is attending school half a day and is eating breakfast, then I don’t see a problem with him coming home hungry.

If he is attending school all day, then I would want to try and feed him something.

My fiance brought up a good point though. Do you think he might be eating other things at school from his friends that may interfere with his own lunch?

Something I just thought of…have you thought about rewarding your child for eating his lunch. I know you don’t keep unhealthy things in your home, but if there is something he loves, you could give him a little when he gets home from school as a reward for eating his lunch at school.

      Good Luck!

    2. You can take this for what it’s worth since I’m no expert on the topic, but if what you are sending to school is things that he’d happily and without complaint eat at home, I’d be trying to figure out what makes it unappealing at school. I think the milk is a good example. If he drinks it ice-cold right out of the fridge at home, it might be getting warm at school and become unpalatable to him. I know that once sliced fruit starts to brown I’m less inclined to want to eat it, even though it still tastes just fine. Is the sandwich bread getting soggy and less appealing? Are all the kids in the class bringing Lunchables? If so, maybe you could send whole-grain crackers and cheese instead of a sandwhich.

Also, for what it’s worth, I tend to agree with you that if this is a full-day K program, you can’t have him going all day withou eating something. That seems to be a recipe for getting a tired, cranky, melting-down kiddo at the end of the school day. Maybe you and hubby could compromise on something like graham crackers until you can figure out why he’s not eating.

    3. Letting hime eat cupcakes for lunch is just going to create bad eating habits for the rest of his life.
