Something on your mind? Chat about it here. Is it maxi dress weather yet? Because it FEELS like it just might be. I always like a maxi dress for the weekend — it's casual and comfortable enough to take you to brunch or out for shopping, but add a cute clutch, a wrap, and some gold or silver sandals and it dresses up enough for a night out. This navy and orange one looks nice, but Felicity & Coco has a ton of nice maxis out right now (including this simple black one with a lower back cutout, which we featured last year and I still love). The pictured dress is $178. FELICITY & COCO Paisley Print Jersey Maxi Dress I like the look of this plus-size maxi dress. Psst: Maxi dresses at the office: yea or nay? Ladies I did it! Been working on a book compiling all the little life and career tidbits gathered over the years into one place, finally finished it! On the Way: A Working Woman’s Field Guide is live on Amazon (starting with Kindle, other formats to come.. does the link above work?). All of you have been a huge part of the thinking and dialogue- I thank Kat in the intro for creating this awesome online community. Please check it out! I’m just at the start of the launch process… any feedback is super welcome. I can send out some free reviewer copies if you email me at robinlakebooks(at)gmail.com.
For those who remember me I know I’ve been MIA for ages… my sweet little girl is turning 3… between being single parent and corporate job have been pretty under water. And plugging away on the book for a few minutes when could:) I hope all are well and I have missed the interaction. Bon weekend!

Wow, congrats! It looks great. May I ask if you outsourced any of the work to get it done – cover, formatting, copyediting, etc? Working on a book myself and very curious to see how other self-published authors get it done.
Ruby
Thanks! Sure feel free to email 1:1 for details… I did have professional proofread/editors etc. I will say on the whole it was so much work, had I known how much, not sure I would have done it on top of work and kid- just kept going once started. Very glad to be on to the next phase, good luck with your project!
anyanony
Was this self-published? I know amazon is really impacting the self-publishing aspect for writers.
Ruby
anyanony- Amazon is opening up a ton of great options! I’m doing a hybrid model… starting with self plus support team/vendors for Kindle version- when move to print will work with likely a publisher.

omigosh this is amazing!! I missed you Ruby, can’t wait to read the book! I’m so proud!

Thanks, la vie en bleu! Most of it the content is from the times I was active on here a few years back… the conversations got me thinking through all these different topics… and figured I should start collecting them for my kid or to at least stop repeating myself to mentees etc.:) I am nervous about whether people will like it or not but it is all from being out there in the trenches and what I’ve observed… for better or worse. Cheers happy end of Monday~

Career Question…
I was recently told that my supervisor is “working on” getting me a promotion from a director to a senior director. This is mostly due to me being an “over-performer”. Nothing was put in writing. I am in marketing – I am not a lawyer. Does anybody know how long something like this takes? And how much of a pay raise can I expect or ask for with a promotion of this kind?
BB
This seems like a question that is highly dependent on your company. I’d try to find a senior person you trust or a mentor to ask them this. “Working on” could mean all sorts of things: Is she waiting for someone to retire? Does she need to create a whole new role just for you?
Totally Anon
It’s a promotion in place. I was hired as a director and have been doing really well. It’s not a new role – it’s just my role with extra responsibilities. The issue, from what I understood, is that we are in a hiring freeze. So the paperwork with HR might be challenging. Does this sound like an excuse to drag his feet on the promotion?
CountC
Good luck. Working on it is no guarantee, especially if there is a hiring freeze and you are already performing the extra responsibilities. I do also agree that it’s very company specific. Honestly, it could take 2 weeks or it could take years/never happen. Do you have any idea if someone more senior approved this promotion or if your manager was just saying it as a “wow, you are a great worker and add a lot of value let’s see if we can get you promoted” kind of way?
tesyaa
Unlikely to take 2 weeks. Two months is more like the minimum time I would expect, and as CountC says, it could drag on longer.
CountC
I was using 2 weeks to illustrate that it is a vast range of possibilities. But then again, my job offer went from not happening until after Q2 (a month away) and unapproved by the pres of the BU because we are in a hiring freeze, to oh hey, we’ll have it to you by COB today. So stranger things have happened.
Ruby
Ask the supervisor! Could be any variety of things. Ask how you can help support the process.
Totally Anon
Thanks for the insight. My supervisor is the VP and the head of our BU has apparently agreed with the promotion. I was also recently selected for a high potential program at the company. I am more worried because I’m not sure if this is being said to pacify me and buy some time without me getting disgruntled. OR, if this is a real thing that is really going to happen. I also don’t want to get my hopes up and the salary ends up being just a few extra thousand dollars. The sudden impetus is that someone else is being brought into the department as a lateral move to back-fill someone. This woman already has a senior director title, so that makes the title difference even more glaring (and unfair).
Upgrading workout clothes
Hi all, I made the decision about a month ago to focus more on health/fitness/going to the gym, and now that I’ve stuck with it for a month I think it’s time for me to get some proper workout clothes. My current standard outfit is Old Navy perfect tank and Soffe shorts (plus a sports bra, of course). I have a bunch of the ON tanks, and they’re super cheap and easy to care for, but they’re cotton and not terribly breathable (ditto for the shorts). I get VERY warm when I work out, so I’m looking for something lighter and more breathable that dries quickly. I run a lot, but also have been taking some bootcamp and yoga classes and doing some lifting. What are your favorite workout tank tops and/or shorts? I would ideally not like to spend that much money, but I understand that I’ll probably need to pay more than $7/tank :) I’m a little overwhelmed by all of the options out there. I’m headed to an outlet mall next weekend that has a lululemon outlet, so maybe that’s a place to start (I wouldn’t want to pay as much as full priced lulu clothes cost)? Thanks in advance!
anon
I like the champion line at Target and Zella at Nordstrom generally. You can find good sales on both lines. I don’t have specific recommendations for shorts since I only wear capris or leggings though.
Maddie Ross
Totally agree about the Champion line of sports bras at Target – I used to wear them in high school for sports even before the Target affiliation and still do now, and they’ve always been great. I do not like the shorts at Target though – I don’t think they have a good range of motion. I would suggest getting Nike running shorts at TJ Maxx.
Wildkitten
I got all my sports bras from Target throughout the 2000’s and the latest lines just do not cut it. So if you are well endowed, I’d go with Moving comfort (way more expensive, totally worth it).
Maddie Ross
Ah, I’m barely a B and could go bra-less for all but working out, so my experience is a bit different.
JJ
I used to wear two Champion sports bras every time I worked out. Now I just wear one Moving Comfort bra and don’t move/bounce at all. They have been positively life changing.
2 Cents
Love Moving Comfort and Enelle. Expensive, but then again, a boob lift would be too.
CountC
Love the Champion line at Target. It’s pretty much all I own from head to toe for workout gear. They have some loose fitting tops in a dri-fit type material that I love. They work in the gym and also running long distances. And you can almost always find a color or pattern that is on sale.
roses
Check out GapFit. It’s light years better quality than ON, but not super super expensive either. Which shorts will work for you depends on your body type, though.
Emily
I love my gapfit pants for running.
the ON are cheap and dry very quickly and thus good for cheapo pants (but I wear them down quick with my sport)
For tanks, I’m liking athleta… a little pricier though. for yoga so my tshirts aren’t flopping down. For running, I use light cotton Ts as Mpls mentioned below.
Ooh, also REI has some good pants.
Anonymous
I got my sports bras and sleeveless tank for running from Target and have been happy with them. Other outlet shops to look at: Nike, Reebok
Anonymous
Yes, look at the Nike outlet. Their Tempo style running shorts work well for running, bootcamp, and general gym workouts (yoga, pilates, barre, spin, not so much–you want at least knee length there). They are usually about $20 full-price, and sometimes the outlet isn’t any cheaper, so take a look but know that you may get a better deal with a % off coupon at your local sporting goods store or Kohl’s.
Mpls
Actually, cotton is very breathable, but it won’t wick sweat away and won’t dry quickly. Maybe what you need is something in a thinner fabric (cotton or not) and looser fitting, so it isn’t right up against your body and the sweat can evaporate. My favorite tanks are from Old Navy, cotton, but of a thinner (non-ribbed knit) racer back/loose fitting style.

I’ve been really pleased with the work-out clothes I have gotten at Costco. I think non-members can buy online for a slight upcharge. Reflective stripes, technical material and a key pocket for under $15? Yes, pls http://www.costco.com/Kirkland-Signature%E2%84%A2-Ladies%E2%80%99-Active-Yoga-Tee-Blue.product.100120392.html The capris/leggings are nice too.
I also have gotten some decent stuff at the UnderAmour and Adidas outlets.
JJ
GapFit is great. I wear all bottoms from Athleta (usually on sale) and my tanks are a mixture from Old Navy, GapFit, and Athleta. I also love Champion from Target.

To hijack this topic slightly, what do you all do for panties when performing cardio? I wear cotton panties, which feel really unpleasant when sweating. Commando? Other?
TO Lawyer
I go commando when I go for a run. It’s more comfortable. I usually wash my workout clothes after one wear.
In House Lobbyist
Commando for all workouts. I can’t imagine wearing underwear.
Asideralis
I second the commando running. Especially if you’re wearing booty shorts.
Actually, I typically wear the least amount of clothing possible when running. I hate feeling constricted. But I love my sports bras.
anon
Commando. 100%. No other option.
CountC
I wear a cotton thong. Perhaps I am just okay with feeling gross? Hahaha. I would not be able to run commando without pee running down my leg constantly. No thanks!
anoon
Wait, what? Why?
CountC
I just have the trickles when I run. It is a given if I am doing speed work. Regular runs – some days it’s a lot and some days I stay dry. On longer runs, I start leaking around mile 8. If not before. Haha. I am super lazy about doing kegels. It happens to at least half my girlfriends that run.
layered bob
this is late in the thread, but in case you see it – one of my pet projects is letting women know that while this is extremely *common,* it’s not *normal.* Many women think that because it happens to most of their friends, it’s just a normal thing that they have to put up with – but it’s not. If your insurance covers physical therapy, it will also cover pelvic floor physical therapy – not all medical systems have pelvic floor practices but check if yours does. There’s more to it than kegels!
CountC
Huh! Good to know. I also pee myself a little when I sneeze, so yea, probably more than just kegels! Thanks!

It took a few years of running for me to feel comfortable with it, but commando now. All shorts have the liner in them and I wash them after one run (but even if I was wearing underwear, I would do that to get out the sweat and salt).

I’ve been on the hunt as well! It never even crossed my mind to go commando. I’ve tried microfiber “yoga” undies, but they don’t stay put and who wants to deal with a wedgie when you’re working out. VS’s no show thongs have worked the best for me so far, but still not ideal.
Baconpancakes
Commando? Mind. Blown.

I’ve gotten some great tanks and running shirts for equally-great prices at TJ Maxx. I tend to allocate my exercise clothing budget towards bottoms and bras. For those, I love Zella capris and leggings; Nike DriFit for compression shorts (I can’t even wear real shorts to run anymore, they get on my nerves so much); and the Lululemon Energy bra.
anonymom
Zella leggings are the best! Sometimes they are part of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.
2 Cents
Putting a plug in for JC Pennedy. I have both shorts and capri running tights that I wear constantly. Also, they have a few different styles of shirts/tanks in “tech” fabric. And it can be super cheap, if they’re having a sale (got a $5 tank once).
nutella
Yes to all the above recommendations. Zella at Nordstrom for the LLL look. Champion C9 at Target for tops. GapFit motion tanks. And for shorts I still loooooooove Nike’s tempo shorts better than LLL, Zella, and Gap – they never ride up.
Happy
I love Oiselle tanks. And they are clearance at Runningwarehouse dot com right now. Less than $15 a tank. They are super breathable and work well as both stand alone and layering pieces.

+1, they’re my favorite.

Just a thought if any of your activity is outside: sun protection. By the time you are my age, you will be glad you did it. I wear rashguards for running or bootcamp or anything outdoors. Vegan tips?
Hi all, Based on a number of reasons that don’t need explaining at the moment, it looks as though my family may be moving towards a vegetarian diet (at least out of the house). Since I have a newly-diagnosed dairy allergy, I would be vegan. I don’t particularly want to debate the merits of this – nor shame anyone making different choices! – but I do have a few questions for anyone in the Hive who is vegan or has food allergies that make professional life/eating more difficult:
1. How do you handle work dinners and conferences?
2. How do you handle the inevitable questions about why you are vegan, or can’t have XX?
3. Any good sources for vegan bags and shoes that are professional?
4. Any other tips/recipe blogs/anything else to share.
Thanks!!
TO Lawyer
For vegan bags, check out Matt and Nat.
Meg Murry
If you are with people close to you, I would express it as “vegetarian and dairy free” since vegans also don’t eat eggs, honey, gelatin etc. Unless you truly do plan to be vegan. Vegan is a good shorthand for trying to order something off a menu (if it’s vegan, it should be safe for you to eat) but if I’m preparing a meal for you at my house it’s much easier for me to do vegetarian + dairy free than to have to obsess about whether there is honey or other hidden non-vegan items.
I’d suggest having a short “elevator speech” one-two line answer if people ask you why.
And I also would suggest not letting people know the “at least out of the house” part – if I went out of my way to make sure to make a meal that was completely vegan, and then I found out you actually ate meat/eggs/milk at home, I’d be pretty annoyed and feel like you were a hypocrite. I can understand you may have your reasons (only want to eat ethically sourced meat or something like that), but after having jumped through 1000 hoops for my FIL’s special diet, only to watch him eat exactly what he told me he couldn’t have at a restaurant (when there were items that DID meet his special requirements on the menu, or available by leaving off 1-2 ingredients) I am far less willing to accommodate him and feel grumpy about it whenever I do.
Anonymous
Yes. This. I don’t want to make you a special vegan meal and then get served chicken at your house. It’s hard for me to even give advice because mine would be if you’re eating meat at home you’re not a vegan do just eat the damn food at a business meeting drama queen.
Asideralis
I was vegan for about 7.5 years, but never avoided leather products.
1. I would just order the easiest meal on the menu to veganify. Grilled veggies, bread, grains, etc. Don’t make a big deal of it, but don’t hesitate to specify your needs quietly to the waitstaff.
2. The easiest way to deal with it for me was to say that it was doctor-recommended and leave it unspecified.
3. N/A
4. Many tips!
My favourite yogurt was ricera, but I don’t know if they’re still in production.

Don’t want to make you get into it but it sounds like you are not going to veg for ethical reasons, and it does not sounds like you are going vegan, you will just be a non dairy vegitarian. Is fish in the running? If you are not actually going vegan it makes things easier
for 1) if your family is doing it and not you, for you can eat what you want. or stick to pasta dishes/salads. At conferences make sure you tell the waitstaff but being a vegan or vegitarian isn’t weird, they will have someone on hand who has prepared an alternate dish
for 2) “It’s a personal choice”
Non-Holy Vegan
I totally understand the fear of being “that vegan,” but 7 years in I can safely tell you, unless you bring it up most people don’t care/notice what you eat. When it comes up I just say “I don’t eat meat” and leave it at that, and most people are happy to leave it there.
For work dinners, there is always something vegetarian on a menu, even at steak houses. People might comment, but if you don’t make a big deal about it most people accept “Oh, I don’t eat meat, but I can always find something on the menu.” Conferences are more than ready/able to handle dietary restrictions, so just let the organizers know.
If people ask why you’re vegan, they’re interested so feel free to tell them (but probably avoid discussing how meat is murder). If you don’t want to discuss it, just say it’s a health thing and most people will let it go at that.
For blogs – check out 101 cookbooks, oh she glows, vegan yum yum, and love and lemons.
Vegan
Agreed. I’ve been vegetarian my entire life and vegan for the last 6 years. I’ve never had a piece of red meat. Tried chicken and fish in college and hated it. It’s actually much easier these days than it used to be – people are more accepting in general, and there are so many food options. “Fancy” restaurants are still hit or miss, which is why I don’t frequent them.
As for talking to people about it, I’ve found those who are curious will ask, and those who are not don’t want to hear about it. For me, it is equally split between health and ethics. If people have questions, I love to talk/try to educate, but if not, I keep my mouth shut. In that vain, I would be careful about the whole “at least out of the house” part of your question. No one likes this no matter what “side” you happen to be on.
For shoes/bags, search for “man made” rather than “vegan.” There are so many choices now. I rarely have trouble finding stuff.
Choosing Raw is my fave vegan recipe/lifestyle blog. The author is not actually raw anymore but the name stuck. She posts really thoughtful things encompassing food and non-food subjects.
Wildkitten
I always phrased it as “I don’t eat meat or dairy” rather than “I am a vegetarian.” I don’t really know the difference but that seemed to work better for me.
anon
It’s really not a big deal. No need to say that you’re not trying to shame people. No need to explain yourself at all, really. If someone told me they couldn’t eat something, I think it would be the height of rudeness to ask why. There are tons of good vegan leather bags and shoes nowadays (check out sole society).
If you’re concerned about not being able to eat at a restaurant, just call ahead and ask if they will make something for you. In my entire life as a vegetarian I’ve never not been able to eat something, even at a steak house.
A Nonny Moose
Interesting, I get asked quite often (and don’t make a big deal at all of the fact that I’m a vegetarian). Although it is usually by people I have known for a while (coworkers who want to bring it up while we all sit down at a restaurant) or well meaning but very nosy strangers (eg woman setting up catering event, who I think had Never met a vegetarian before based on her reaction). Agree that you’re unlikely to be questioned at a networking event or something similar, though. I usually just smile and say “oh I have a couple reasons!” And change the subject. If pressed I will add that I never really liked meat much anyway, which I think makes it sound less judgy (and is true).
Someone on here said their husband? Replied to “why are you a vegetarian” with “mostly for the sense of moral superiority,” which I loved a lot but am still waiting for the appropriate audience to use that on…
Vegan
I actually get asked all the time. I can usually pick up on the person’s point of view by the way he/she asks the question (open/curious v. judgmental) and answer accordingly.
pickle
On business trips: because protein is my biggest problem, I travel with peanut butter and a loaf of sliced bread whenever I’m going to a conference in a hotel in the suburbs. You can also google the nearest grocery store and finding out if there is a hotel fridge.
On work eating: do your homework before you get to the restaurant so it isn’t awkward. Online reviewers will usually identity the best (or lack of) vegan options, and report if, e.g., baked potatoes at a certain steakhouse are rolled in bacon fat. I have gone to such a steakhouse and had a double side salad as my entrée, because that was my only option. I knew that in advance and didn’t make a scene (this is why there are always Kind protein plus bars in my work bag). If you know of vegan-friendly area restaurants via Yelp, you can suggest them when decisions are being made.
Vegan
Yes. Always travel with snacks. Protein bars, nuts, nut butters, etc. I can only count one time I got stuck somewhere with nothing to eat, and it was truly awful (thank you to the Wawa I eventually found!) but in general it’s really pretty easy to stay on top of it. Occasionally you’ll have a lousy work meal. And then you’ll go home/back to hotel and eat more food.
anon
I travel with single serve hummus packets, single serve non- dairy salad dressing, and soy breakfast bars.

Re the dairy allergy – call restaurants in advance at off-peak times so that you can speak to the manager and/or chef. Then when you arrive, speak to the manager again in person as well as your server to be sure all are aware and understand that this is a medical issue – not a preference. This was a little awkward for me at first but has become second nature. You may want to also carry “chef cards” with your allergy information on them that servers can bring back to the kitchen. There are available to download online are come in different languages.
la vie en bleu
This. I used to do it when being vegetarian was much less common, and I didn’t find it quite as necessary as time went on. But especially when going to high-end/fine-dining restaurants, most of the time when I would call ahead, the chef was actually happy to make or alter a dish for me, and often I would just ask what they suggested and they’d come up with awesome stuff. Like a vegan wild-mushroom ravioli, or a stuffed squash, etc. And it really does help to call ahead because then none of the staff feel ambushed or stressed about it if they know it is coming.
And definitely on the snacks. I got so used to carrying food around with me that even though I am no longer vegan, I still do it a lot.
As for when people ask you why. I agree with the commenter above who says you can tell what the opinion of the person asking is by their tone, and there is nothing wrong with just saying “Oh, lots of reasons.” and changing the subject if you just don’t want to talk about it, or if you can tell the person asking is going to be judgy. In your case, that sounds like it’s actually the truth that there are a lot of different reasons, so don’t feel bad about ducking the subject.
And my mom is lactose intolerant, and I have to say these days restaurant folks all over the country have been much more aware and happy to tell us the ingredients in things and help her find something she can eat when we are nice about it. I think it’s much easier now than when I was vegan in 2000, so I think you’ll be fine!

4. For my dairy-allergic child, kosher restaurants and kosher foods are useful. People who keep kosher are well-versed in what is a meat product and what contains dairy. Eg, if it says pareve, there is no dairy or meat (but might contain egg or fish, so not vegan, but helpful). We can give her kosher pareve cupcakes, for example. Or know that if we go out to eat that there won’t be butter in the food.

I have a ton of allergies that range from life-threatening to red welts/swelling around the eyes and lips/itchy misery. I carry protein with me always. If I’m going away for work I make sure I find a supermarket/get the hotel to order safe fruit and veg and carry cereal in my luggage. For work dinners I call ahead and talk to the chef – I find that you can work with people to modify the menu but sometimes they need a day to purchase gluten free sauce or pasta. Also. If they won’t work with me to accomodate these things, the restaurant doesn’t get our business. If I get questions about my diet I just say ‘major allergies, a bit frustrating but keeps me healthy’ and make it clear the conversation is moving on.

I’ve been vegetarian, eating vegan at home for 8 years. No one ever notices my eating habits unless we are somewhere like a steak house. Tbh the only time I’ve ever had a problem was in the southern states, you would have thought I was a child murderer by the way they acted that I ate vegetables. For eating curries, lentils, beans, Asian, Mexican, Indian, Spanish, and Italian food are all really easy. People don’t realize that mass quantities of meat consumption is very uniquely American. Personally I do it because its socially and environmentally responsible, but I don’t tell people that, I just say “I like vegetables” or something else non offensive.
Vegan
LOL at child murderer. Been there.

When I am abroad or at conferences, airplanes etc. I always ask if a meal is Kosher, no one ever asks why or judges me and I don’t feel like I’m shaming anyone eating pork. As long as you don’t make a scene regarding your dietary preference, no one should give you the side eye at work or elsewhere.
Ruby
I am vegetarian and have had many an awkward moment in business settings. I wrote a section in the book on this- happy to send you a copy! That’s longer and in better shape than what I could quickly write up here- in short it is doable but tricky at times so worth thinking through your approach. lol I went to Japan and Peru for work last month, Japan was super tough to eat veg in the city I was in, Lima very veg friendly actually. Except for all the usual macho colleague questions, used my usual deflect/make light of it responses.

Yeah the commenting system has killed the great convos we used to have. If i go back and read things later I realize that tons of comments got posted hours after they were originally posted/
Anonymous
the ads that kill me are the ones with sound. Totally unnecessary.
anonsg
Anything that automatically plays when I haven’t clicked on it annoys me. It runs the CPU on my computer like crazy and is totally unnecessary… sigh.
Lorelai Gilmore
YES. And the way that the ads are silent for a while, and then suddenly start playing? It’s really a killer – you think you’re safe, get on a call, and then BAM, there’s an ad for antiperspirant making a lot of noise.
Celia
I use Ghostery, which prevents nearly all ads from automatically loading, and I keep the sound turned off all the time on my laptop.

For today, I agree with the OP. I was in moderaeetion all morning so no one was abel to give me advise. I am reposting so that the HIVE can give me advise. Here is my morning post again. Help!
Yay! Fruegel Friday’s! I love Fruegel Friday’s and this Pencil Skirt, Kat! It is so springey! Great Pick, Kat! YAY!!!!!
I read in today’s NY Times that the Doctor that was treated for Ebola in Atlanta STILL has Ebola in his eye. FOOEY! Mabye Dad was right after all about Noah. They say that Ebola can stay for MONTHS in your eye or in Semen, which mean’s that even if you are decleared EBOLA-FREE, that if you have sex with someone who is a doctor who had Ebola, you can get it through the semen. FOOEY! Now Noah did NOT have Ebola, but Dad was worried that with all kind’s of peeople showing up at his ER that he could, and then he could give it to me, even if we did NOT have sex or exchange semen. I supose that if he did have an active case, that would have been true, but even if he was cured, and we did get sexueal, then the semen could also give me Ebola. I am glad dad was MENSA, b/c I never would have been abel to figure all of that out on my own, particulearly b/c I am so involved in being an attorney at law here in NY, and I want to remain in good standing, at least until AFTER I marry a rich guy and he impregnate’s me with NON-Ebola Sperm. YAY!!!!
Dad want’s me to come out to LI this weekend to discuss the partnership agreement. He think’s that Mabye I should branch out on my own, so that I could get the FULL benefit of all of my case’s. I do NOT have any suport structure for doeing this — no associate’s, no secretary, or office. I think Dad wan’ts me to set up MY OWN Practise, which would mean getting my own office and secretary and wireless rooter. He also said that I could do all of it out of my own apartement, particulearly if I get the 3 bedroom uptown. I have alot to think about.
What does the HIVE think? Should I go it alone? I would need an associate, but would NOT take Mason, because he is a doosh, and Lynn would have to come with him, and I do NOT want to have to pay for those 2 haveing sex on the conference room tabel, like they did in the old place. FOOEY on that. Myrna has agreed to drive me out and stay over for the weekend b/c she is thinkeing that mabye she would buy my apartement if I move to the 3 bedroom. I am NOT realy interested in moving b/c I have my apartement set up just the way I like it and everything actualy work’s! I have my own home office and wireless rooter already, and I do NOT want any cleint’s comeing into my new apartement, even tho there is 2 1/2 bath’s and they would only be using the toilet to go to the bathroom, not shower, so that might work, but still. I think I have to be abel to seperate my work from my personal life. Otherwise I will NEVER find a rich guy to MARRY me and take me to Chapaqua. FOOEY!
What does the HIVE think? I useueally read alot of good advise from the HIVE, and I try to give good advise. Now I hope the HIVE has some advise for me. BTW, I may go back home early b/c it is so nice out and I need to slim my tuchus down b/f dad sees me. HELP!

If you can handle admin tasks and have the cash flow to cover slow payers, go for it. Otherwise stay where you are and find a guy to marry you.
Noreen
I think Noah was a good egg. I recommend you make another play for him–perhaps a feigned injury could cause him to run to your rescue. Once you’ve got him in your lair, tighten up, and squeeze hard — most men turn to putty if you know how to do it right. He will marry you if your bedroom skills are up to date.
slow website?
My computer is struggling to view the website today. Moving like a snail, and crashing. Does it have to do with the new audible ads (ugh… how unpleasant)? Please fix.
Anonny
Tech of this s!te has been awful recently. Not just you and probably not just those ads.
Anonny
I posted this comment at 3:47. I’ve checked a couple times since then and am only now seeing it actually appear.. it’s 4:39.

Anon @ 4:22 here–I had that issue with my post below not showing up for over 3 hours, though I’m sure it went into moderation because I forgot to put the ! in that incredibly inflammatory word that rhymes with bite.
It kind of seems like all of these gimmicky ads are being added because readership and comments (which generate a lot more page views) have declined and thus there’s a need for new revenue sources. But those new revenue sources are just driving even more people away, so IMO this strategy should be reconsidered.
Must be Tuesday
I’m having same issues – very slow and crashing.
Left Coaster
Yup, PLEASE get rid of the audible ads. So embarrassing when one unexpectedly popped up this morning!
emeralds
The audible ads are a HUGE problem.
Cat
I always have my work comp on mute, but the number of ads and plugins have dramatically slowed down the page load for me – never mind the wait to see if a comment makes it. I know Kat needs to make money off thiss!te but it’s making my visits less frequent – if I have 5 min to kill before a call, it’s not the same quick skim it used to be.
ETA – I’m forced to use IE at work without adblock. Loads fine at home on Chrome with adblock activated.
Anonymous
I use Chrome with adblock and beginning today, there is a new set of ad tiles between the main post and the comments, under the heading “From Sites We Love.” Not sure if these are audible ones the other commenters are referring to because my computer is on mute and I’m not really in an office setup where I can conduct a test.
Anonattorney
Huh, I never get the audible ads. And haven’t had any problems loading the website or commenting. Is it browser specific? I use Chrome, FWIW.
HSAL
Same here. I had some loading problems a few days ago, but the last couple of days have been fine. I have some autoplay video ads with no sound, but I haven’t noticed any others. I’ve noticed the increase in ads between the post and comments, but honestly it’s not that big of a deal to quickly scroll past.
SFBA
I’m on Chrome. Brand new work laptop – I got it last week so it has basically no cookies or history and only the latest service packs, and I only use it for/at work. I encountered the audible video ads and the slowly loading pages. I especially hate the video ads because I’m afraid that spike in traffic attracts the IT bots that crawl our system. My IT guys said basically that the firm doesn’t care what pages you’re on, assuming that they aren’t actual p()rn or such, but video will cause a system flag because video slows down the entire system. The audible ad for KY lube this morning was especially problematic and I honestly don’t understand why I would receive that ad given how new this computer is and that I haven’t visited any web pages that would prompt that.
Parfait
In Chrome, I had some trouble commenting for a few days — I’d post, and it would say it was a duplicate comment even though it wasn’t — but that seems to have abated.

Audible ads here too (on Chrome). Not good at all. On top of that, this site now has a whopping 58 “trackers” (third parties that observe your activities, here and on other sites) — way more than other sites I visit. (You can see these using the Ghostry plugin.) Not only do those trackers raise privacy issues, they also slow the site considerably. And today (for the first time), I got a request to access my location? For a fashion site? No way. Agreed that Kat should make money from this blog, but this has gone too far.

Thank you guys for reading! The tech troubles have spiked this week and we are trying to get to the bottom of what the problem is – we’re moving as quickly as we can; thank you for your patience. I’ll look into the audible ads – all of my networks are under strict instructions for no audible ads (or ads in general for things like KY) (!!!) so I’m going to try to get to the bottom of that, too, asap.

Thanks, Kat!

Hi all — I posted earlier but received no responses, so I am trying again here.
I had a first-round interview for a job on Monday. On Tuesday, I was contacted by one of the people who interviewed and said that they would like to call me back to meet other higher-ups next week, and that they would be in touch. It’s now Friday afternoon and I still haven’t heard anything regarding scheduling for next week. Should I follow up?
Thanks!
mascot
I’d wait until next week. It can be hard to coordinate a bunch of schedules.

Any other UK people in shock? Being abroad is making this especially weird – people keep asking if this means we’re leaving the EU.

From the election? I heard they expected the labor party to win. Why did the man step down after the loss.

Talk about Target…I’m glad that some of you guys shop there because I love that store! I don’t have time to go shopping at a mall so I basically buy my clothes (work and casual) when I run in to get milk, eggs and random household items.
Question: Is there still a weird stigma about Target? When I was growing up, Target didn’t have a really good reputation but now that I’m older, I totally love it and always tell others that I get my clothes there. However, do other people frown upon this store? In other words, should I not be telling my co-workers that I shop for my clothes there? Would they judge me differently?
Mpls
Hmm – Target (or Tar-jay) was always considered top of the list for the type of store it was (Target ->Walmart -> Kmart -> Pamida).
I never did a lot of clothes shopping there (poor selection, I had weird size issues), but those reasons can vary from store to store and customer to customer. I probably wouldn’t get ALL my clothes there, but it’s a solid contender for basics or cheap trendy stuff.
layered bob
ohhh Pamida. You ARE a Minnesotan :-)
Mpls
You betcha.

After losing a lot of weight and needing to build a whole new wardrobe, I bought a lot of clothes at Target. That said, it meant that every week when I went to buy household stuff, I was buy another sweater or t-shirt or whatever. It got to the point that I put myself on a Target clothes shopping ban. Now I only buy the occasional workout clothes there. I agree with Mpls that it is the top of the food chain of stores like that. I know Walmart may be slightly cheaper but I can’t bring myself to shop there.
la vie en bleu
Nah, I think in the last decade Target has really broadened the range of products they sell. I know lots of professional women (including a lot here) who mix basic Target pieces in with more department store level work clothes. I wouldn’t worry about mentioning it at all, if I was your coworker complimenting your clothes and you told me you got something at Target, that would just make me want to run out immediately and get the same thing!
Trish
Government lawyer here who loves Target. That said, I buy suits at Macy’s or Banana Republic. Target work clothes are too trendy and the cuts are too young for me. I am 48.

Anyone use high-yield savings accounts for Emergency Funds? The banks that offer it (synchrony, ally), seem to be all online-based. Is there a catch?
Additionally, I just heard about Mango Financial, which has a 6% yield on your first $5000 in the account, linked to a pre-paid debit card with required auto recurring deposit. There’s a couple hoops – transfers into and out of the savings must go through the debit card, there’s a monthly $3 fee (negligible in the face of a 6% yield), and you are required to have a recurring direct deposit, but assuming I just used the account deposited for coffee, and moved the earned interest to the debit card to use for groceries, I’d pretty much get free groceries every month. Anyone have experience/horror stories/glowing recommendations on Mango Financial?

We use Ally for our emergency fund. We (thankfully) haven’t had an emergency that has required us to quickly withdraw, but we’re happy with it. We get just under 1%. We do make sure we have about $2k in super liquid (ATM-able) accounts at all times in case we needed to, for example, leave the city very quickly in a true large-scale emergency.
Ginjury
We use GE Capital (1%) and have an old Capital One 360 (formerly ING @.75%) savings account with no issues. Luckily, like Anonymous above, I have had an emergency where I needed the funds in less than 24-48 hours so this hasn’t been an issue. We do have a $1k buffer in all our checking accounts though so I think we’d be okay if something happened. I am intrigued by what you’ve said about Mango, but it sounds like there’s got to be a catch since 6% is absolutely unheard of. They have a B+ on BBB and some of the complaints are concerning, but the extra savings sounds really enticing. Maybe others can chime in.

DH and I got a last minute invitation to sit in a box at a country music concert tomorrow night. I haven’t been to a concert in 20+ years and never a country show. What does a mid-30s mom wear to such an event? I’m in a medium sized Midwest city, if it matters.

Jeans, boots, a cute top, and a smile.

+1 jeans and any solid black top would be fine. If boots aren’t your thing, I’ve worn flip flops (or nice sandals) before too.

PSA for anyone that has a Bon Ton near them and gets coupons. I usually just throw them out b/c I’m not a big fan of the store (kind of like Belk in the south.) This weeks coupons though are more like Kohl’s cash. $50 off apparel purchases (sale and regular items) totaling $50 or more, same deal but $35 on shoes and accessories and same deal but $15 on makeup and fragrance. Basically $100 worth of stuff potentially free if you price it out right. I’m sure I’ll end up buying a $20 make up something and spend $5 but still a great deal and worth the trip to the store.
