Have a very first-world mental issue going on… I’m heading to Vegas with some dear girl friends for a Bachalorette party, and we have a fun time of shows & catching up ahead of us! However, also on the agenda are a couple of dance clubs, which cater to the 21+ crowd. Situation is, I’m the oldest by about 7 years of the next oldest in the group. I know they are going to want to ‘dress to the nines’ which means something slightly different from mid-30s to mid-40s3… and all fashion ‘rules’ aside, this also an issue for me anyway, as I’ve always preferred a more laid-back scene for entertainment, corner/punk bars vs. the club scene. I know the body-conscience clothes common with young women in Vegas are not something I feel comfortable in, not that I’m really out of shape (5’10”, size 10) but just that that look isn’t me, and never really was, even in my 20s! But, I’m having trouble finding things that seem ‘Vegas’ enough that also seem appropriate to me for my age and preferences, without being frumpy. Ugh! Any suggestions and words of wisdom, both for clothing options and for getting my head into the right space for heading to the Vegas club scene for an evening, and having a good, non-self-conscience time?

With the caveat that the Las Vegas-type fun has never been and will never be my style or choice (punk bars FTW!), I think that you can find a happy medium between the “typical” Las Vegas getup and the laid-back-night getup.
I’d probably wear an awesome dress that remains elegant but is also either on the short side, a bit sequined, funkily patterned, etc. I would also do huge, hairspray-the-crap-out-of-it hair. Regarding getting into the Las Vegas mindset, I’d try to consciously find a balance between relaxing and taking things as they are (having fun with your friends!) and being totally (and secretly!) pleased with the fact that you feel like you don’t fit in there. :)

I would try nice dark wash or black tighter jeans (I prefer skinny jeans with heels, but bootcut with heels is fine too) with a shiny/sparkly/low cut top for a happy middle ground, I’d also go with shiny sparkly heels.

Thanks, I’ve been thinking about jeans, and I do have a pair of skinny jeans! But would have to pair with flats, as I’m Bambi on ice with anything over 2 inches, lol!

You probably will not be able to get into most clubs in flats.

I should add, I’d be fine with dressing-down and people watching… but its a small party of five women, and I’m kind of concerned with bringing too low-key of a vibe to the celebration if I dress down and wallflower too much, if that makes sense?

You sound a lot like me before a recent bachelorette party I attended (I’m 39). I wore a tightish black dress that came down past knee and was a little low cut and added a blingy necklace. The dress was from Ann Taylor a few years ago, but I suspect you can find similar pretty easily. I wore flatish wedges since I like to be comfy. I definitely wasn’t va va voom like others wearing tight jeans and barely there tank tops but I still felt like I was clearly on a night out. I think it looked classy and didn’t take me too far out of my comfort zone. A couple of others wore dresses as well showing varying degrees of skin.

The shape of the dress was kind of like this but not as much sleeve:

What about a flowy, short dress? A lot of one shoulder styles seem to have a looser fit through the torso and a “slim” and short skirt.
