Re: the NYT article, fancy business lunch sounds better than a standing meeting next to a food truck to me, and I live in the East Bay, food truck heaven. Also, if there are no gathering places for your industry, how do you meet people? Organized networking meetings?
I feel like the elimination of real lunch hours contributes to the sense that work is taking over our real lives and that we are lacking balance. I’m all for informality, but why get rid of the nice / luxurious-feeling aspects of professional life that previous decades enjoyed? Let’s sit down for lunch, not at our desks!

My office for my summer internship had a fantastic canteen (even if I steered clear of the haggis…) and myself and the other interns would meet for lunch every day. Because I’m not big on the party scene, it was my way of getting to know everyone and form some solid relationships. I think it’s a shame when that’s absent.
