Has anyone had success creating the “paper-free office”? I am getting there – very little paper in the office now and it is wonderful. On my desk there is a stack of “to-do” folders about 6 inches high, but that is all, in the way of paper, except for one pad of sticky notes which I almost never use. I am noticing that in a law firm adjacent to mine there are paralegals (I am an attorney) who have on their desks as much as 24 inches high of files to work on, plus many doo-dads. Does anyone find that that is an efficient or comfortable way to work?
With the advent of e-ink, like the Kindle and Nook, I think there’s hope for going paper free, but I personally can’t stand spending all day staring at backlit screens. I’d much rather have 20 inches of paper than 200 pages of a PDF to read.
I would LOVE a paper free office! Am hoping to reduce the paper over the next 2 weeks, but don’t think I can get all the way to paper free….perhaps at my next job….
Ugh – I keep getting the comment error that I am posting too fast.
I am 99% paperless. I only print things when I need to look at them in hand while writing. I do still write assignments down on paper and keep them in a binder but I then add them to my electronic to do list.
When my AA gets the mail she scans it all and just sends me a link to stuff I need to see. The originals are put in the firm’s filing area. Lately I have been working with lawyers who prefer paper copies of things but many lawyers in my firm do everything electronically.

I have two computers on desk so when I need to I can work on both at once. But – the best laid plans of mice and men – just after I posted that about paper free the office ceiling caved in from snowstorm – all the paper on desk got soaked – fortunately it was just the very most current files and mainly things I had printed out for clients to review or sign so I can print again. Of course the ceiling failed right over the tiny stack of papers. The cellulose ceiling tile truly exploded, and every inch of the office is now covered with white cellulose particles – a total mess. Landlord is a major national bank and they will fix everything, but even so it makes me crazy.
