I’m surprised this hasn’t come up (or maybe it has and I missed it), but did anyone see the NY Times story about the new study saying that women should wear a certain amount of make up at work in order to be viewed as competent and trustworthy? I am not sure I am surprise by these “findings,” but it is interesting food for thought all the same. Curious what your thoughts are.

I think someone posted it on the Coffee Break thread, but it was too late for comments.
I think it does depend a lot on your field as well. I worked around a lot of IT people when I first got out of school and in that field it seemed like people were more likely to view you as competent/trustworthy when you had a very natural look. If you wore more makeup, you were more likely to be seen as high maintenance and people wouldn’t really take you as seriously.

At first, I was ready to be all angry-feminist-hear-me-rant about it but eh. Isn’t the reason/hypothesis/point of the study the same reason we read Corporette? I’m ambivalent.
The messed up thing is, I’ve personally noted and observed that I get treated better when I wear makeup, personally and professional. If that ain’t galling, I don’t know what is.

I saw that. It made me sad. Not out of some crazy feminist leanings(though tempting) but because I’m lazy in the mornings and don’t wear makeup. Also, never learned how to put it on right so the whole process scares me. Which is crazy, really–who should be afraid of a little eyeliner?

Crucial Conversations isn’t new — it’s a classic.

A MUST read, actually. Although I prefer the Crucial Confrontations version, same premise in both. Read it!

I’m a bit alarmed by the Styleist banker makeover article. No banker I know would get away with any of the makeover suggestions – much more suitable for creative industries maybe? IMO the banker who was the subject (victim?) was not well served by the suggestions – not only were they too outrageous for her workplace, they just don’t work for her! She looked better in the “before” pics, just needed a bit of extra pizazz and a blowout maybe.

The after pictures are make her look dowdy and unprofessional at the same time. I’d say that all she needed was a good hairstyle, some jewelry to add colour and a jacket with a more feminine shape.

I think that women are expected to look a certain way to be seen as ” competent” through makeup/clothes but I think men have certain expectations of them as well. Such as their suit, car …etc.
We aren’t supermodels but I think women should have a little fun dressing up to work within the boundaries of the corporate office. Check out iamnotasupermodel.com for inspiration! Thanks Girls.

You really make it seem so easy with your presentation however I in finding this matter to be really one thing which I feel I’d never understand. It seems too complicated and extremely extensive for me. I am looking forward to your next put up, I’ll try to get the dangle of it!
