I’m going on a two week vacation to Spain in the fall and can only take carry. Advice on what to bring clothes and shoes-wise? I’m usually a very bad packer, and I know I can bring only a couple pairs of shoes and will need to wash clothes in the sink.
Buy shoes and sandals there.
Risky…. it’s kinda terrible to break in new shoes on vacation, where you are walking all day.
But of course she SHOULD buy shoes :)
I’ve been on a ten-day trip with a backpack only, and packing light is sort of a hobby of mine. To me, packing light = freedom.
– Packing cubes are great for organizing and fitting more. You can shove way more in them than it appears, but once they’re zipped they take up less room.
– Choose clothes and shoes based on bulkiness and weight. Silk is a great option because it’s so lightweight.
– Two pairs of shoes should be sufficient. A pair of comfy sneakers and a sandal that packs flat would be my choices.
– As always, wear your bulkiest items on the plane. This might mean wearing jeans on an overnight flight.
– Honestly clothes are never as much of an issue for me as toiletries. Embrace the european air dried look for your hair :). Decant all your larger products into the smallest possible containers, and streamline your toiletries where you can. E.g. I skip a bunch of steps of my skincare routine when I travel, and only bring essential makeup.
– Finally, it is totally doable and even fun to pack this way. My mom is a chronic overpacker– she and my dad brought two huge suitcases to Florida along with big carry-on bags. I convinced her to try carry-on only for a Europe trip where she’d be schlepping her bags to multiple cities and now she’s fully converted to carry-on only travel forever.
Thanks. I have curly hair and never ever blow dry it anyway, but you’re right that toiletries are the challenge. I bought bar soap shampoo and conditioner for the trip and sample size of my hair styling mousse. Thanks for the suggestions.
If space is at a premium can you buy toiletries there? That seems less fraught and easier to leave behind than trying to buy shoes there.
These are my favorite toiletry containers– they take up practically no room. https://www.mykitsch.com/products/refillable-travel-pouches-3pc-set-black-ivory
Ooo, thank you! I just bought them!
Travel Fashion Girl dot com has a lot of great tips and videos for packing for a whole bunch of destinations.
What part of Spain (weather varies a lot) and what kind of stuff are you doing – beach, walking around cities, countryside, etc
Several different cities and mostly being a tourist, but will throw in one bathing suit just in case…
swimsuit + knit tank dress that can double as a swim cover up + hat and sunglasses + a long silk scarf
slip-on sneakers (like Vans) + merrell sport sandals + flip flops (so no socks, unless you plan to go running) + small travel-size shaker of talcum/baby powder (really helps avoid blisters); wear the slip-on sneakers or the merrell sport sandals on the flights
flowy pull-on wide-leg slacks + a couple of skorts + several T-tops and sleeveless knit tops + 1 long-sleeved
a couple of knit dresses (which can include the swim cover-up)
a tan color or black shrug or cardigan
If your carry-on can expand, buy some espadrilles while in Spain, and bring home some saffron.
Enjoy!
