Coffee Break: Naked Manicure Perfector

I was intrigued to see readers recommending the Zoya Naked Manicure products during a threadjack on Manicurist and healthy “naked manicures.”

The shtick with Zoya is that their colors are actually color correctors — so the lavender version is supposed to balance slightly yellowed nails.

Each color is $12, and ULTA also has their base coat and top coat for $14 each; you can also buy a starter kit at Amazon with four bottles for a little bit more than the price of two of them. They also have a product called “Nail Perfector Plus” that has more of a color to them; you can find them at Amazon or Zoya.

  2. Will be in Asheville for July 4th. Any recommendations? Two elementary kids and a dog will be in tow . . .

    1. River tubing on the French Broad! Check the water quality reports first but it’s a great activity. And go to Hole Donuts.

    2. I’m a baseball nerd, so I would be checking out the Asheville Tourists. They have a home game and fireworks after. No such thing as a bad day at the ballpark.

    3. We were there for the 4th last year and the South Slope area was closed to traffic for the late afternoon/evening. There are lots of bars, shops, and restaurants in that area anyway, but there were also food trucks and vendors set up, as well as music and other entertainment. The fireworks were set off from a nearby parking garage and could be seen throughout the area. It was a lot of fun!

    5. Rocky’s Fried Chicken, White Duck Tacos (downtown—alas the Riverside location is closed).

  3. does anyone have a Sofabaton remote? they’re so expensive I wonder if it makes more sense to just buy a new TV. We hate the remote for the old Vizio we bought at Costco about 8 years ago.

    1. Would it make more sense to buy a streaming dongle (ie. fire stick, Google TV, etc); use that for your TV OS; and treat the Vizio like a dumb TV? It will also likely make any apps you use faster and more responsive – the apps an 8-year-old Vizio is running are likely not getting updates anymore anyway

      You’d have to check specific models; but the vast majority of modern streaming TV remotes can be programmed to control *power* to almost any TV (ie. so you press the power button on your new streaming stick remote; and everything turns on/off at once) – you really only need something like sofabaton if you need to change more complex settings that are *on the actual TV*

      If you are okay with the limited buttons; something like Sideclick (not posting a link for mod reasons but it’ll be easy to find on Google) might work as well, and much cheaper than sofabaton

  4. Any advice for me as I navigate life with a preteen daughter and puberty topics?
    We have talked several times about getting a period. She has had it in Health class. We’ve of course talked about stranger danger and s3x topics. She gets intensely embarrassed but the more conversations we have, it seems to get better. I tend to approach very matter of factly and sometimes with “Dad jokes” but that doesn’t always help ease the embarrassment.
    I got her a trainer bra cami even though she doesn’t seem like she needs it yet (11yo and small and slender for her age). Maybe I should’ve done it a bit earlier as it seems like she had questions about it and some of her friends wear bras already.
    Any advice on what your parents did right? How do modern dads deal with it? DH is more than an equal parent and very involved and caring dad. I think she feels that a bra/period may make things awkward with Dad and Brother. For example, she asked “do they know” about these things and how would she deal with it if they noticed, for example, that she was wearing a bra.
    When do I introduce tampons and how do kids deal with it for swim team?
    Moms and daughters, give me all your wisdom. Thanks!

    1. Make sure she has access to both pads and tampons even before you think she needs them. You can offer to teach her about tampons but even if she refuses, have them stocked where she can find them. I remember teaching myself how to use tampons and using up my mom’s supply so she was caught short one month. Don’t let that happen to you!

      Also I hope you are teaching your son about all the same things you are teaching your daughter. Raise him to be the good guy who quietly offers his sweater if he sees a girl with a stain on her pants or skirt. And you want to be able to confidently tell her “Dad and Brother know all about it — it’s part of life.”

    2. I highly recommend the Girlology in-person programs if they are available in your area. They pass around tampons for the girls to see and touch and IIRC they use a puppet to show how they work.

      I would explain that what actually gets noticed is a lack of proper clothing/hygiene. I am surprised that other girls are not teasing anyone who is not wearing a bra at that age; this was definitely happening by age 9 or 10 at my daughter’s school.

      1. Some girls need a bra at 9 or 10 but many don’t; in my experience you only get teased if you need one and aren’t wearing one.

    4. I found all this intensely embarrassing as a kid, and there wasn’t anything my mom was doing wrong or probably could have done to make it better anyway, just to take some of the pressure off.

      Something she did that helped was just making sure supplies were there without me asking (and some other stuff like “here, I picked up this extra bag for you to keep in your locker just in case, put some pads, tampons and an extra pair of pants in it”. Some kids would have probably enjoyed shopping for that stuff “together”, I would have found it mortifying.

      Practical info – make sure she knows what to do with used pads and tampons (where they’re flushable; where they’re not).

      Also, maybe a physical book? (I think I had the American Girl “care and keeping of you” one; but no idea what’s current). I probably would not have wanted to browse period educational videos on a shared family tablet in the living room.

    5. I remember having a really hard time with tampons when I first got my period. Make sure you have teen (small) tampons for her. Also maybe try knix or knix teen or equivalent, they sell period underwear, sleep shorts (which I still wear even after menopause) and period swimwear.

    6. I think you’re doing the right thing by having lots of open conversations with her. That’s great for all kids.

      In my state, kids can privately go to the pediatrician on their own at age 12 for reproductive and mental health concerns. I don’t think my kid is anywhere near wanting to do that, but I’ve mentioned it repeatedly. A pediatrician is a way better resource than ChatGPT or peers if there’s something they don’t want to discuss with me.

      I also have a very thorough book on hand and mentioned the name of a website I trust.

      My view is I want my kid to get good information no matter the question. If not from me, then from another trusted source.
