Weekly Roundup

by C September 18, 2009 Fashion

Liking these posts? Follow Corporette on Twitter — this is the edited version of what we’re reading! (We also Tweet if we hear about a good sale.)

- Shopping’s My Cardio has a great round-up of fall cuffed boots (probably not great for the office, but thank goodness for the weekend, right?) Our favorite from her picks: Ash ‘Olivia’ Tall Boot, available at Nordstrom for $299.

- Should women be forced to wear high heels as part of a workplace “dress code”? Jezebel covers the controversy.

- OK, we had to post this: Perez Hilton has footage of Sonia Sotomayor doing the salsa. We hate to quote Oprah (and, disturbingly, our father) but: You go, girl!

- If you’re on the verge of a laptop purchase, Gizmodo offers you a few reasons to wait just two months more.

- Fine, fine: after Jezebel’s glowing review of “Jennifer’s Body,” we have added it to our Netflix queue.

Bargain Friday’s TPS Report: Dialogue Elbow Sleeve Ballet Neck Ponte Knit Dress

by C September 18, 2009 Fashion

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.
DRESSReader M suggests this lovely dress from, as she says, an “unexpected source” — QVC. She writes: “I love this dress so much, I bought it twice–once in black, and again in charcoal–something I never do. It’s easily dressed up or down by adding a scarf, brooch, pearls, a cardigan, belt, or jacket.” We agree–between the flattering neckline and the ladylike length, it’s a great basic for work. It’s available for $40, in sizes XS-3X, at QVC.com. Dialogue Elbow Sleeve Ballet Neck Ponte Knit Dress

Urgent Reader Mail: What to wear to an interview/dinner?

by C September 17, 2009 Fashion

Reader A writes in with an urgent request…

I sent in my cover letter + resume to a firm and was invited to a dinner with potentially 2+ members of the student hiring committee (I’m assuming other students were invited as well…) the restaurant is quite high end and I was wondering what recommendations you would have to wear. They didn’t mention a dress code. I’m thinking either: 1) A black dress + Black jacket OR 2) Black dress pants + dress shirt + black sweater over it. What would be your choice?

Ultimately, this is an interview, and that means one thing to us: full suit. Because it’s unclear, though, be prepared for the possibility that you will want to take off your jacket to be more casual. So, for example, choose a suit where you like the pants by themselves, and choose a layer beneath the suit that has sleeves and looks professional. A silk sweater would probably be our choice here, accessorized with pearls or other conservative (and good) jewelry. (Pictured above: August Silk Three-Quarter Sleeve Square Neck Sweater, available at Macy’s for $29.98 — we’d also recommend checking out your local Filene’s, TJ Maxx, or other discount store; for some reason they frequently have a wide variety of these silk sweaters.)

And yes, we did say pants — even though we’re normally huge fans of the skirt suit for interviews, because this is dinner, you want to avoid any appearance that you thought you were going on a date. Go with a skirt if you want; we’d avoid a dress at all costs.

Readers, what say you? Also, do you have any other tips for the tricky dinner interview? We’ll point you to an older post we wrote about dining etiquette; we’d also advise drinking very little (one glass of wine at most) and ordering something easy to eat, like ravioli.

Thursday’s TPS Report: Nicole Miller Matte Jersey Sheath

by C September 17, 2009 Fashion

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.
Reader A suggests this jersey sheath by Nicole Miller, noting “I adore the turquoise because it makes me feel like I can get away with something bright and trendy, while still remaining classic.” We also like the color (and the sales price!), and think it will look great in some markets, like the South, where a brightly-colored suit is popular. For a more urban market like New York, we’d mute it with a long boyfriend cardigan in black or gray, belted. It’s on sale for $74 at Nordstrom’s (was $188). Nicole Miller Matte Jersey Sheath

Suit of the Week

by C September 16, 2009 Fashion

For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional.

Reader E wrote to us to suggest this lovely purple tweed suit, and it sparked our interest because it is available in regular, petites, and tall, which we don’t see very often. We like the two pieces together, but we like that they would both look nice on their own, as well — the jacket would look lovely, open, with a long-sleeved turtleneck beneath it and trousers; the skit would look great with very high heels and a navy sweater. Our suggester, E, also asked what kind of shirt we’d wear beneath it — we would advise either a thin short-sleeved scoopneck tee, or a turtleneck or other long-sleeved tee. (Either way, we’d cut down on drycleaning costs by putting a barrier between us and the jacket.) The jacket (Exploded Herringbone Stand Collar Jacket) is $238-$248, and the skirt (Exploded Herringbone Metro Skirt) is $138 at Pendleton-USA.com.

Wednesday’s TPS Report: Anthropologie’s Laced Roses Cardigan

by C September 16, 2009 Fashion

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.
We love the vibrant colors and pattern of this cotton cardigan from Anthropologie — the crochet, the buttons, the bracelet sleeves — altogether it’s feminine and beautiful. Because it is so feminine we’d wear it with trousers (perhaps we’d try a pinstripe if we were very daring) and a simple black or white shell beneath it, or perhaps a bodysuit blouse. It’s $128 at Anthropologie. Laced Roses Cardigan
