Suit of the Week: J.Crew

jcrew campbell suitFor busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional.

J.Crew has been really excited (if their email list is any indication, at least) about their new seasonless suit: the Campbell suit. It’s a good looking, classic suit — and (dun dun dunnnh) it’s on sale today: 30% off with code DAYTHREE. (I think they’re having daily, online-only sales on select merchandise; luckily for us the Campbell suit is part of today’s sale. Shipping is also free.) The pinstriped versions (charcoal and navy) and sold wool versions (blazer, pants) are on sale; the stretch wool blazer is sadly not part of the sale.  The blazer (Campbell Blazer in Pinstripe Super 120s Wool) is $248 regular price; with the sale it comes to $174. The pants (Campbell Trouser in Pinstripe Super 120s Wool) is $148 full price; $104 after the sale. Both pieces are available in tall, petite, and regular sizes 000-16.

This plus-sized herringbone suit is also newly marked down as part of the Nordstrom sale — love it.  (For more plus-sized picks from the sale, check our plus-size workwear page later today (or sign up for the newsletter to be notified of when we post our picks!).

Deal Alert Part 2: Shoes, Bags, and More at the Secret Nordstrom Sale

secret-nordstrom-sale-shoesI rounded up my workwear picks that have been newly added to the Nordstrom sale earlier today, and then hit the shoes.  The sales aren’t as steep (sigh), but the selection is pretty great — almost all of the shoes pictured below have a TON of sizes left.  I didn’t see much I loved by way of bags, but a few cute accessories are also in the mix.  (For beauty, if you like the brand Napoleon Perdis, there’s a ton on sale — I’ve never tried it but a lot of it looks nice.)

My top picks, after the jump…

Deal Alert: The Nordstrom Secret Sale is Pretty Great

nordstrom-secret-saleNordstrom usually trumpets their sales, so it’s a bit surprising that they don’t have any messaging on their homepage or anywhere about this — but there are a ton of great workwear pieces on deep discount. Below, see some of my top picks — most are either 50% off or have 5-star ratings.

Wednesday’s TPS Report: Isabell Print Skirt

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

DvF Isabell Print SkirtI’m a little obsessed with this amazing DvF skirt, part of what seems to be a TON of untrumpeted new markdowns at Nordstrom. (Lots of 60% off items, like this one.) Love the flounced shape of this silk skirt, and the navy and white pattern is fun without being crazy. Alas, like most good sales, there are limited sizes left — but Bloomingdale’s has a ton more at a higher price ($243, take another 25% off with code FRIENDS); and Net-a-Porter has the skirt at full price ($350) in a black and white pattern. At Nordstrom, the skirt is $139.  Diane von Furstenberg Isabell Print Skirt

(Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s both have the matching blouse, as well.)

Here’s a similar option in regular, petites, and plus sizes for $80.

Coffee Break: ‘Jessica’ Leather Tote

Lodis 'Audrey Collection - Jessica' Leather ToteOur daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

What a great leather tote — I like all the zippers, the organization, and the fact that it’ll fit most 15″ laptops. The red “briefcase” can be a classic look for women; this one also comes in black (with red accents) and a tan. There are a bunch of cute, affordable bags in the Lodis line — some specifically for laptops, some not — so click around if you don’t like something specific about this bag. The pictured bag is $298. (Update: Amazon Prime has the black version for $265!) Lodis ‘Audrey Collection – Jessica’ Leather Tote

A couple of lower-priced options are here and here.

How to Wear Flats in Winter

How to Wear Flats in Winter2018 Update: We still stand by this advice on how to wear flats in winter — you may want to check our more recent discussion on cute flats for the office for more updated brand and style options.

In cold weather, what are the best ways to wear flats to work? With socks? Tights? Reader E wonders how to wear flats in winter…

Could you recommend some ways to style flats for the winter? In years past I have worn skirts and opaque tights with pumps or booties in cold weather (I don’t live in a particularly cold climate), but earlier this year I decided to give up on heels altogether because of some foot problems I’ve been having. I’m happy with my flats for summer looks, but ballet flats just look so odd with tights to me. I’m hoping for some better style ideas! What flat shoes work best for winter looks? Thanks!

Great question, Reader E — and even though it still feels kind of warm outside, the cold will be upon us in no time. (Winter is coming!) We’ve talked about wearing flats all the time, as well as interviewing in flats, but not in a while. Obviously you can just wear flats where you would have worn pumps, but if you can’t walk in flats with tights (I can’t!), or if you feel like something is off with the silhouette, then we need to dive a bit deeper.  I’m curious to hear what readers think, but here are some of my thoughts:
