Our daily workwear reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.
How lovely is this turtleneck from Nili Lotan? It’s not the thriftiest option, but when you consider the fashion math with something as timeless as this piece, it starts to make a little more sense. When I can see myself wearing something for at least two seasons for the next decade, the price tag feels a bit more palatable!
I would wear this with trousers, skirts, denim, and perhaps even layered under a sheath dress.
The sweater is $590 at NET-A-PORTER and comes in sizes XS-XL.

Did anyone see “You Can See Everything” over the weekend? I did and have SO many thoughts.
No! It is sold out everywhere in my city. Second weekend in a row.
I want to see it so badly! I can’t find tickets for Thursday. Btw, does iPic not let you book on Thurs – Sat? For some reason it isn’t populating those times.
We took a random day off last week to go hiking in the beautiful fall weather and then stopped at Alamo Drafthouse on the way back for a late lunch and a movie. I definitely recommend weekdays to take advantage of both relatively empty movie theaters and state parks. Also indie movie theaters- if we hadn’t gone then, we would have gone to our local indie theater that started showing it this weekend and rarely comes close to selling out, especially at off peak times like earlier in the day on weekends or weeknights.
Yes. Can we do a spoilers thread this PM – mark it very clearly and then chat about it? I also have so many thoughts… and I’m confused about some things…
Yes and also I went to high school with her soooo I do too.
It’s an incredible film! Everyone should go see it!
Give us the inside scoop. Was she just your ordinary fellow student back then or what impression did you have of her?
Ordinary student. Middle of the road in science. Took regular not honors classes. Was very confusing once the theranos stuff started! never bought her as a science or stem genius.
she was always very hardworking and ambitious.
can add more if we do a spoilers thread as the movie was fascinating!
My takeaway from all of this is don’t invest in a college drop outs scientific breakthrough start up without first consulting their high school chem teacher.
Oh, wow.
My theory is that she didn’t court science people and non-science people just bought in without question. Is she that charismatic? Do people never audit stuff (like the science version of accountants)?
I’m not a scientist, but have had enough family members with medical conditions that I understand what it means to run a rainbow and that the equivalent of a BGL finger stick cannot recreate that. No one likes a blood draw. But fraud isn’t the fix (and probably whatever else the boyfriend is trying to get started).
Question for the hive – I have a few MM LaFleur sheath dresses from before the pandemic (specifically the Aditi, Emily, and Etsuko). I’m in my mid-40s and work in finance in NY. Is there any way that I can make these seem more current or should I just give up and move on. Thanks!
I’m keeping mine for when they cycle back in fashion. Most of my dresses from that time are around knee length. That length isn’t particularly fashionable rn and my “eye” has changed as a result. Things I used to love feel scandalously short now (even though I know they aren’t)!
You are going to get divided opinions. Put them on and look in a mirror. Do you like what you see?
agree – if you like them, wear them. i just looked all of them up. if they fit you nicely i think they are total classics and don’t look out of style to me. i mean maybe they won’t win you any fashionista awards, but look very appropriate for the finance world. update with shoes/accessories
Agree that they are fine in conservative settings. I think they would be ok with a current blazer and shoes. I still have a black Etsuko although to be honest the last two times I have worn it were for funerals… it’s a great dress though.
I was just reading the weekend thread and I have to ask why on earth women would ever want single shooter bathrooms to be uni sex??? Every time I use one of those, the toilet seat is left up and there is pee everywhere. Every. dang. time. I truly truly hate going to restaurants that do this as some sort of public statement on their views when I’ve literally never seen anyone tr*ns at these restaurants despite going frequently so it really just inconveniences all of the women.
This was a thing in Europe since forever, but I think there is that often there is only one single-stall bathroom because things are too old to modify otherwise. BUT HERE, I was grateful for a ladies’ room when I had wee children because they were just so much cleaner, especially the floors (and what spatters on floors, often isn’t just on floors). And there are never enough hooks and I hate wishing I had a third hand to hold thing because I don’t want to put my stuff on the floor in there.
I don’t understand it either. In addition, the risk of voyeurism (via hidden camera) increases whenever men have regular and permitted access to a bathroom women use. No one will ever question why a man is in there if he’s allowed to be.
This! It’s disgustingly common enough that our custodians check when they clean and replace batteries
Wow — I thought that this just existed in sketchy AirBNBs. Bathrooms hadn’t entered my radar.
I’ve always hated them being separate because then you have to wait when one is available and perfectly usable. I hate waiting in line to pee, so I’m all in favor of the more efficient use of space.
I’m OK with that at a drinking-oriented bar. That’s a wild-west sort of atmosphere. But anywhere I’d take my mom, I don’t want her to have to deal with pee on the floor (and the ton of people who you hear flush and just walk out and you know it’s too fast for any hand-washing; the common line destroys the mystery). I don’t want to deal with it either in a nice place. This is also why I will never be on Team Jumpsuit.
If there is a line at the ladies’ and an empty men’s room, I am going to use the men’s room every time.
Honestly, I don’t really care. Plenty of women are bad at hovering which is worse than a toilet seat being left up. And, I say this as someone that will use the men’s designated single bathroom when there is a line. It just is not that big of deal.
Yes! Like please wipe up after yourself.
I also have no problem using a men’s rest room if there is a line disparity. I think they should all be first come first serve.
+1 to all this. I can’t get too worked up about this either way. I’ve been in plenty of clean unisex bathrooms and plenty of gross women’s only bathrooms. I’m all for whatever results in the shortest wait time when I have to pee
Yeah, I feel like lots of small businesses have just one bathroom and it’s fine and how clean it is depends on how often they clean it so some are great and some are not? I have never given this much thought at all.
I get that but if one guy comes in after they clean it, then the toilet seat is left up probably over 50% so then even if it was just cleaned I have to either touch the seat with my hand or use my foot as a clutz.
Also, I get using the men’s when there is a line. Often I do that too. But what I really do is peak into the men’s to see if it’s clean and if it is then I use that one but if it is not (which it usually is not) then I wait for the women’s.
Why would you ever call a single bathroom stall a “single shooter”. What is wrong with you
Actually, that really illustrates the problem well with words.
I don’t really understand the term. Am I meant to be offended?
I’ve heard it called that all my life. Weird that people are confused by this. It’s just a term for a single bathroom.
Because they are trying to stir the pot. I really recommend not engaging with this kind of rage bait.
+1.
This was my reaction too. It’s so weird and it gives me the ick. Also, I haven’t noticed single stalls being grosser than any other bathrooms.
What is the point of this post? What is the point of all the bathroom anxiety? Because it seems like there’s no solution for the complainers except ensuring tr@ns people stop existing. That’s really not on the table. Maybe just pee before you leave? Maybe do your business and leave the bathroom as soon as you wash your hands like the rest of us?
Straw man. The solution is that bathroom remain separated by sex.
Yeah, it’s actually no tra*ns people I’m worried about. It’s men who pee on the toilet seat and leave it up.
So my experience is that both sexes are disgusting? Like some women will literally squat over the seat, spray everywhere and not clean it up.
I haven’t minded the unisex restrooms I’ve been in, they are larger and have been well cleaned. Some have those mini toilets, which I really appreciate for my kids. My husband can take my kids or I can, gender isn’t an issue.
I think your actual hang up is how often the establishment cleans said restroom.
The cleanest and most thoughtful restrooms I’ve seen have been in Japan. WOW.
All things re Japan and toilets seem to be next level.
There’s probably a better way to express this but here are my thoughts: if the restroom is a room with one toilet and sink so only one person is in there at a time, it shouldn’t be gender specific. That creates long lines for women while the men’s room stands empty. And I don’t see any more pee all over the place with one gender or the other. Frankly, given a choice, I’d rather deal with pee on the floor than the seat.
I don’t like communal sinks or nongendered bathrooms even if the stalls go all the way to the floor and ceiling. It creates the opportunity for men to corner a woman. And I want to be able to primp without men leering at me because he thinks there’s something sxual about reapplying my lipstick or adjusting my underwear.
As to the second paragraph above, I have literally never encountered that setup anywhere in the world.
I thought you were well traveled? I’ve seen it frequently enough and I’m not particularly well traveled. It’s extremely common in Europe as well as newer, upscale bars/restaurants in the U.S.
Do you think tr*ns people wear signs or something?
Unisex single restrooms are not a political statement unless the signage uses politically charged terminology. All public restrooms are gross if not checked, restocked, and cleaned regularly, whether they are designated for women or not. I’d rather have the shorter wait.
So we are really denying that men have grosser bathrooms than women? This is just not reality and you know it. Ask any mom of boys or any college girl visiting the boys’ dorm for the first time or scores of other people.
gross, hadn’t considered cameras.
in my perfect world all bathrooms would be what “family bathrooms” are – toilet, sink, changing pad, hooks, well kept. come one come all. and apparently a wifi blocker or something so a camera can’t transmit? yuck.
i guess i always thought the main objection to singleton bathrooms was people having sex/doing drugs in there.
I was just reading the weekend thread and I have to ask why on earth women would ever want single shooter bathrooms to be uni s*x??? Every time I use one of those, the toilet seat is left up and there is pee everywhere. Every. dang. time. I truly truly hate going to restaurants that do this as some sort of public statement on their views when I’ve literally never seen anyone tr*ns at these restaurants despite going frequently so it really just inconveniences all of the women.
What are you on about? How on earth do you know who is tr&ns? How do you know who is peeing on the seat? Why do you keep going to dirty restaurants? You know if they can’t keep the bathrooms clean the kitchen is dirty too right?
But sure jan. Everyone is virtue signaling because tr@ns people don’t exist and it’s all a big scheme to have men pee on your previously pristine public toilet seats. You’ve uncovered a real hardship there.
Sounds like Airbnb hosts are upset about the new guidelines that they can’t ask for guests to clean (wash sheets, wash dishes, etc.) and also charge cleaning fees. Sorry guys, long overdue. It was always such a scam that they got away with that. I’m not missing my flight to do your chores and obligations for you.
I haven’t paid close attention but I only want an AirBNB with a hotel like experience: my only jobs should be to pay and not trash the place. I don’t want to feel like I work there. Chores are just for being at home.
Agreed!
I’m with you. This was one of the many reasons I’ve always avoided air b&bs. The fees on fees and chore lists felt like a total scam
One we stayed at had a $500 cleaning fee and we had to clean AND bring our own toilet paper. On top of $8k a week!
I feel like everyone is always so polarized on thèse conversations. If I’m renting a home I don’t leave a pile of dirty dishes and I’m ok with taking the trash out if it’s reasonably convenient. I’m not stripping the bed and I’m certainly not starting a load of laundry. Especially not when I’m paying a cleaning fee. But I use Airbnb less and less anyway – a lot of hosts were renting dumpy homes for luxury rates and once you add on the fees, a hotel is often better value and way better service.
This is where I am. I will use for something where that is the market, like for vacation rentals like beach or lake houses in my state (where hotels don’t really exist in those locations; it’s not Miami). But not in a city.
I agree with this. In my mind, Airbnb is for normal people who have jobs and families and rent out their tiny first home (or mom’s house they inherited, or whatever) for a little extra cash on the side. They can’t always get to the property or hire cleaners to get there on check out day, especially if no one else is checking in that day. I don’t mind doing things that can’t wait a few days, ie, don’t leave food trash to get smelly and attract pests. I figure it’s the price of being able to pick which day I want to check out rather than being stuck with renting a whole week.
The new rules work to the detriment of owners like that. They’ll have to pick the checkout day rather than let the guest pick. The bigger investors that have been getting away with this nonsense will just charge more; they already have a cleaning staff anyway.
One of the many reasons I don’t stay at AirBnBs is that a guest checking out is likely to do an even worse job at cleaning than a paid cleaning service or a hotel housekeeper.
Yup, one of the many reasons people prefer hotels these days.
OP here and I would also strongly prefer hotels but the options appear to be near-zero for suite-style rooms in our price range in the areas we vacation. We just can’t all (adults and kids) share one room and no kitchen at this stage in our lives. If more hotels offered family-style rooms for reasonable rates, I would be ALL over it.
Same here. Two adults + two teens in one room is not great. The teens understandably don’t want to share a bed anymore.
In the sorts of cities with a lot of big regional medical centers, I’ve found a LOT of suite-style hotels. They aren’t often in center cities, but in outer areas otherwise. But anything with “suite” in the name is probably a good option, even if they seem a bit sterile and corporate.
Any transactional lawyers here? I kind of love this, but I also had no idea that this existed (outside of wills or real estate closings) when I was applying to law school or in it.
I did 7 years of M&A in biglaw. It was fun but exhausting. Now I’m in house doing contracts. What do you want to know?
Everything. All of the things. What is the thing I could be learning now so maybe in 5 years I’ve got expertise that is really valuable or helpful?
I’m a biglaw partner in transactional real estate and honestly I use my 1L Property notes more than I ever thought. So don’t throw those out.
secured transactions
It’s hard to answer without knowing anything about your current background. Obviously you need basic knowledge of corporate and contract law. But especially as a mid level, a lot of M&A was project management. I needed to coordinate the juniors doing DD, the SMEs reviewing the reps, the paralegal doing the corporate work… and then you need solid negotiation and people management skills (also to manage your clients’ anxieties and unrealistic expectations). Find good mentors. And especially in this day and age, you also need to be tech literate to manage the various support software and understand how to use AI responsibly in this context. And huge attention to detail because the cost is high if you mess up – come up with systems to triple validate everything important.
It was fun work and closings were an adrenaline rush. I made good money which obviously helped. Part of me misses it. It was also brutal hours, high stress, and I personally wasn’t ready to do what it takes to push to partnership while having kids.
I have supported M&A in a light capacity, but all I have ever done is transactional law (business formation, business advising, contracts upon contracts upon contracts). I started in a firm, worked for state government for a minute, and have been in- house now for about a decade.
I have only ever been a transactional lawyer, minus hard-core M&A. I started at a firm, worked in state government for a minute, and have been in-house for about a decade now. Business formation and lots of business advising, contracts upon contracts upon contracts, compliance, etc.
Ugh sorry for a mostly duplicate but different post. Thought my other one did not go through.
For those in the DC metro area – do you have recommendations of where to shop when you just want to try on a whole bunch of blazers? Big bonus points if they have petite sizes for a narrow-shouldered person? I have an event coming up and really need a new blazer and I’m not sure where to go. Thanks!
A few stores at Tyson’s Corner have in-person petite sections such as Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, and Loft. But you should probably call to confirm they still stock petite sizes since I haven’t stopped by in person in a few years.
Any time I want to try stuff on in person, Tyson’s is where I go. They have enough stores with good selections that still seem to carry work clothes (I can never find work stuff at pentagon city). But I’m not petite, so can’t speak to that.
I’m not your shape, so your experience may override this but… I’ve had good luck at Talbots for blazers. They’re well constructed and, while not the cutting edge of fashion, are unremarkable.
What’s the best cashmere turtleneck? Am trying to decide between Ann Mashburn and Brooks Brothers. Are there others I should be looking at? I’m a size 12-14.
I’ve had them all and the best ones I had were from Costco. Thick, lush, took abuse and I threw in the wash with ease.
Second best: Lands End
I’ve never bought from AM, but am shoe-curious at that store. BB just fits me odd. Husband recently joined Costco and I told him to GRAB any cashmere turtlenecks that he might find.
Neiman’s house brand. Preferably on sale.
J crew will give you room for some curves without being frumpy. Land’s End ones are too square and just stand away from my body.
Some recent decisions of my boss and her boss — namely, last-minute changes in decision-making and not understanding the ripple effect — have made me look really bad to colleagues in another department. Because I’m the one who has to communicate what my bosses want, even though I know full well that they are not being realistic and creating a lot of extra work. I actually got an apology from one of them, but I am having a really hard time letting go because I know this is likely to happen again. It is to the point where I’m afraid to make any decisions on my own because chances are, minds will change or something won’t be good enough. The worst part? It’s about details that truly DO NOT MATTER to the success of the project. I’m finding this VERY triggering. (I am not new to my role.)
TBH, I don’t think my work style is very compatible with how my boss’s boss works, but I know my role, and I know my role is to fulfill their vision, no matter how dumb it is. Any ideas on how to cope better with this? Yay to being middle management.
Have some time to kill during an upcoming business trip to NYC and thinking about getting my colors analyzed. Anyone have a recommendation? Manhattan preferred, although could go further for the right person.
this seems like a waste of a trip to NYC but that’s me.
Not what you are asking but I did the expensive in person color analysis and then I did it with ChapGPT and I got the same exact results and recommendations from CGPT. I wouldn’t spend the money.
Has anyone tried a vagus nerve simulator like Pulsetto? Their social media ads are getting to me
Can we talk about the Weil meltdown here? Is the firm going to survive all these departures?
