Belts as a splurge: yea or nay? I feel like I've seen a ton of the Hermès belts and Gucci belts as “basics” on a zillion personal style bloggers — but what about this unusual belt from Bottega?
The pros: It's gorgeous, and the organic shape is minimal but also really interesting and memorable. I think it would be great to wear with a simple dress or jumpsuit to add some low-key interest.
The cons: Ah yes, it's $580 plus shipping. Minor details.
You can find it at MyTheresa.com for $580.
A few more affordable alternatives are from Raina, available at Nordstrom for $110, $125, and $135.

Going off of the convo on the morning thread, it seems incredibly screwed up that Robinhood and other brokers are holding people’s money hostage by preventing them from buying and selling GameStop stock. How on earth is that legal? Beyond legal, it’s clearly unethical to penalize individual purchasers because hedge funds got beat at their own nasty game. This isn’t a fraud scenario that justified an immediate response – there’s nothing fraudulent about talking to others (publicly) on Reddit about which stocks to buy and sell. Can anyone with more knowledge about this help me understand why the platforms can behave this way? Will there be any consequences? I see that a couple of lawsuits against Robinhood from individual investors who got unfairly f*cked over are already being filed.
If anyone has a recommendation for a platform that is NOT doing this, I’m all ears…
Anon
Because we can’t possibly let the rich hedge fund investors lose all their money!
Anon
Yup, my husband has some fun money tied up in this. If you hear of a class action, let me know!
Anon
Class action was filed in Southern District of New York, civil docket no. 21-cv-777

My husband is working on a class action complaint as we speak. He is planning on finishing it today and starting to get people to sign up tomorrow. Will probably post on reddit as well –

Vanguard and Fidelity are consistently being reported as fully open for buying and selling of any stock. That’s where I’m moving my money.
If nothing else, this is bipartisan in a big way. Ted Cruz publicly tweeted agreement with AOC on her call for investigation today.
Anonymous
Fidelity may be open, but not sure – my husband tried to log on and said the site kept crashing. Not sure if it was high demand or some kind of stopper action on Fidelity’s part.
Anon
The servers are being overwhelmed, but I have not seen any reports of people actually in their accounts and being restricted from trading.
Anonana
Damn. When you’ve got Cruz and AOC agreeing on something, you done messed up A-a-ron.
Anon
Ben Shapiro agreed as well. I’m awaiting the Fourth Horseman.

I doubt that Dolly Parton is going to wade into this.

I needed this laugh.

But see AOC’s amazing response to him saying “you almost got me killed, resign.” Or something like that.
Though I did appreciate him agreeing with her.
Anon
Steve Scalise almost got killed.
Lilau
Yes exactly!!! By a left wing lunatic! This is because advocating for Medicare for all is exactly the same as telling your supporters that a fair election was rigged and their violent actions to overthrow the government will make them heros and patriots! BOTH SIDES! Both sides is so much easier than acknowledging the rhetoric that leads to violence! BOTH SIDES!
Seriously stop. You’re probably too smart for this.
Anon
Lilau, that’s not an appropriate response. AOC was not in any danger whatsoever; however, two of her colleagues on the other side of the aisle have landed in the hospital, one on death’s door and the other with permanent lung damage, due to the violence of their political opponents. The fact that you approve of Medicare for all does not make it okay for a left-wing Bernie supporter to have tried to murder several people in cold blood or someone to almost kill Rand Paul as he was taking out his trash. The fact that you disagree with the vote fraud allegations and agree with the Blasey Ford allegations does not make it wrong for one side to occupy the Capitol and the other side justified in doing so.

Just imagine if a mob of crazed Democrats had stormed Mar-A-Lago the other day when Trump and McCarthy were meeting … with nooses and guns, and people died. Would we be saying that McCarthy (or other Republicans) should think that was no big deal? It is ludicrous to say that AOC wasn’t in danger — ALL members of Congress, of all political stripes, were in physical danger, and that’s completely unacceptable. Look, I despise Sen Cruz and Reps Marjorie T-G and Lauren Boebold, but I want them out via resigning or ballot box — I don’t want them physically harmed.
anon
That is so counterproductive and exaggerated. Will that be her response every time he finds agreement with her?
Anon
The riots at the Capitol happened THIS MONTH. She’s not going to get over it. Sane, normal, decent people are not going to get over it.
anon
Actually AOC is correct. Ted Cruz needs to resign. He supports sedition. He voted against confirming the electoral vote. He appears to be trying to fill the twitter void left by Trump with himself to keep attention on himself or gain support from Trump followers.
He is not someone who needs to be ‘worked with’. He needs to resign. I’m glad AOC called him out. Would that more people continue to do so and that the bill Cori Bush is introducing get traction.
Anon
If someone also got me killed you better believe I’d bring it up every time I talked to him.
Anon
“I’m so tired of hearing about an attempted coup. It’s no big deal!” – this poster
Anon
In January of 2001, 2005, and 2017, multiple Democrats objected to the certification of the vote. Are they guilty of sedition, too?

You mean she should go back to doing her job? This is part of her job.

You ever notice right wingers can’t defend anything so they just do whataboutism ?
No respect. Zero.
Anon
I saw it suggested that the platforms didn’t have the cash to enable the transactions at this scale, so shut it down?
Anonymous
The platforms also have fiduciary obligations to investors that probably can’t be met given the trading volume and actions. I’m sure they feel they are quite exposed right now (Robinhood already paid an enormous fine for this – like $70mm).
Anonymous
schwab also stopped all trading on GME and AMC, which I was similarly infuriated about (not about the money bc I have literally 2 shares of GME and 10 of AMC) but because it’s not okay to not allow a trader to do what they want with their money. Where was this “protection” when I lost money on AAPL years ago? You can’t arbitrarily apply it. I also don’t see what the difference is in rddit picking stocks and people acting on it, and Jim Cramer going on a TV show telling folks to “buy buy buy!” absolutely disgusting.
Lilau
Wait but isn’t it different to say “i think this stock is undervalued and you should buy it” than to say “let’s all conspire to drive up the price of this stock artificially, for purposes of profit” ? It seems to my very rudimentary understanding that latter is market manipulation and should be illegal no matter who is doing it. If a bunch of traders in a chatroom did what the reddit folks did they’d be prosecuted, right?

I find the GG belts vulgar and real housewife-ish but this belt looks lovely.
Anon
I like the concept of this, but the form is just too random, like if I got a caught on a drawer pull and warped a more regular shape.
I feel like belts that I think are classic often have a more limited shelf life than I hoped for, so I’m never likely to spend any $ on one and am going to find “the look for less” at some mall store (or a decent approximation).
anne-on
I have this one in 2 colors and it is GORGEOUS and adds such a nice ‘pop’ to dresses.

getting pretty close to 10% vaccinated, too. And well over 10% of those eligible since kids can’t get it and they make up 20-25% of the population.

Thank you. I needed this positive news today and my skim of the news headlines didn’t have anything uplifting.

To answer the general question above, I am a big “yea” on belts as a splurge. About ten years ago I spent $150 or so on a Streets Ahead studded, distressed belt and I have worn it at least once a week ever since — sometimes near-daily for weeks at a time. It hurt like heck to spend that kind of money on a belt (seemed ridiculous at the time), but it was one of the best purchases ever.

For the person this morning asking about Equilibria CBD – I tried it last year and hated it. For context, I got some PlusCBD softgels from a local store and found that I was sleeping better and more soundly. Equilibria products were suggested in one of my FB groups so I ordered one of their “Mom” kits with softgels and the tincture. The tincture tasted like grass and I saw zero effect from the softgels or the tincture. I went back to my PlusCBD softgels instead.
I know Wardrobe Oxygen raves about the brand but I question how honest that review is.

Right? Every influencer raves about it. Clearly bought and paid for

Ugh, Wardrobe Oxygen is a giant shill site at this point. Girl’s gotta make a living, but I basically trust nothing there anymore.

I totally disgree! Allison is honest and real. Yes, she sells a lot of stuff, but does well enough that she picks and chooses.

I work in media, but not anything near Jennifer Barnett’s level. And I swear, her article is so familiar that it makes me so sad. The meetings without you. The lack of appreciation for women who leave to take care of kids but continue a mountain of work (more than colleagues) unappreciated after hours (I’m kid free, but just a witness). A top guy getting let go for gross ineptitude and landing up or into the same somewhere else.
My experiences aren’t as dramatic. But even the small things wear on you like memos where your first and last name are used but all the boss’s chums are referenced by first name. (And no, my first name isn’t a common one.)
Many of my female colleagues have gone on to freelance.
Just sad the toxic level is somewhere I thought would be better like the Atlantic.

… from your am post: write the collection agencies what is called a debt validation letter. tell them you dispute the debt & under the provisions of the Fair Dent Collection Practices Act, you are requesting that they validate the debt. If they don‘t, which is more than likely, you are good.

just a rant: I wasn’t too bothered when my Xmas present bumbled around distribution centers all November and December, never getting nearer its destination. The postal service is having a difficult 2020, I said. It’ll get there when it gets there.
It didn’t get there. It came back to me. Delivery guy left it on the curb, for all the world to steal, in the pouring rain. Ok. Delivery folks don’t have an easy job. Luckily the contents were wrapped well and are intact. But the website says now that the stupid thing was delivered, even though the address it was clearly delivered to is the return address. The shipping address is not even on the same continent. So the customer service keeps telling me that delivery timelines are not guaranteed and there is nothing they can do. I keep trying to explain to them that I don’t care about the timeline, but if I pay $40 for a service and get nothing, then that’s not ok.
Thanks for letting me rant.
Anon
That’s SO frustrating! I feel for you.

I love the look of belts worn with dresses and worn over tops but have had no success with that look on my own body. I’m short with average curves and every time I’ve tried, I feel it makes my waist look thicker than it otherwise would. Anyone have tips and tricks to making the look work?
Anon
I’m a compact pear and it makes me frumpy. You need a long torso to make it work.
Anonymous
A long torso doesn’t help. I think you have to be Vera-Ellen to look good with a belt over a top or dress. I have a long torso and a straight figure, and all belts look ridiculous on me because they emphasize my lack of curves and long-waistedness.
Anonymous
Probably not the look you want, but it can work if you have an open and elongating jacket of some kind layered over. You get the belt waist effekt, tricking the eye to think the waist is smaller because you cant see the whole horisontal line.

Dad update: We’re trying to get him a psych consult while he’s hospitalized post-surgery. So far, this has not been successful because he was able to be totally composed/not psychotic with the ICU doctor somehow, but the nurse said he’s being weird with her, too so she said she’d push for it. He doesn’t seem to know where he is, and he keeps answering “Ben Franklin” to our/her questions, and now believes my mom has sent security guards to monitor him. The last thing he told my mom before surgery yesterday was “I’ve always hated you.” This is not at all like him. He isn’t himself. Have now completely given up on even trying to work today and am just being available for messages so it seems like I’m working.
Anonymous
This seems so hard. This internet stranger is sending you lots of hugs.
Anonymous
I am so sorry. I’m glad the nurse can help be an advocate. It can be so frustrating. I’m glad your mom has you. I went through similar with my dad and it can be so scary.

I’m so sorry. That sounds so hard and I really hope things get easier soon.

Sloan, sending you hugs and good thoughts. Your book recommendations brighten my day & I wish you & your family the best.

So sorry you and your mom are going through this. It does sound heart breaking. Hang in there and keep us posted.

My father had ICU psychosis. The part I remember most vividly is his telling me, in a very confidential manner, that he had just learned his beloved doctor of twenty years was actually a major drug dealer. I’m here to give you hope because my father recovered from the psychosis once he was transferred out of the ICU.
Vicky Austin
Oh, Sloan, I’m sorry it’s been so hard. I can’t imagine how disturbing and sad it is to see your dad so different from how you know and love him. I hope the nurse is able to push the psych consult through.
