Statement necklaces are back — for the holidays, at least, thus far. As part of last week's roundup of holiday attire, I found a ton of great statement necklaces. This one from Tuckernuck didn't make the list because it doesn't feel holiday enough (cue *jazz hands*) — but I still really like it if you (or! someone on your gift list!) is a fan of statement necklaces.
As with so many things at Tuckernuck I feel like this one would be great for a preppy kind of girl — I think the ivory would be great for the coastal grandmother look. (Readers were also recommending Tuckernuck as great for suggested dress codes like “snappy casual,” which, ugh (to all creative dress codes).)
The necklace also comes in tortoise and a turquoise blue; it's $138 at Tuckernuck.

Some of the more holiday-ish, blingy statement necklaces we like include great options from Alexis Bittar, Karine Sultan, Bauble Bar, Deepa Gurnani, Knotty, and even All Saints and Kendra Scott. Some other favorites are below:

Any recs for Scottsdale/Phoenix? We’re going to be there (with a 5 year old kid) over the holiday weekend in January. We have tickets to a kid’s show at the theater and will also be hitting up the science center and desert botanical garden since we have free access to both through reciprocal memberships. That will probably fill our time pretty well (we only have two full days and one half day), but I would love a recommendation for easy hikes our whole family could do (<3 miles roundtrip with not a crazy amount of elevation gain would be best). Also would love restaurant recs. We have a preference for outdoor dining, hopefully that won't be too challenging that time of year?
Anon
With only a few days in town, I did a hike in Sedona and don’t regret it! I don’t remember details but the drive was worth it.
Anon
Sedona looks beautiful and I would love to go there some day, but we’re not interested in going there on this trip given how little time we have and how much there seems to be in the Phoenix area. I think the theater event and desert botanical garden will easily fill one day and knowing my kid we can spend an entire day at the science center. So we’re really just looking for some stuff to do on our arrival day (we land at 10 am local time, but will likely want to crash early since we’re on eastern time).
Anonymous
There’s a very short hike up to like a hole in a rock that’s cool right by the botanical gardens (that also feel like a hike tbh)
Anonymous
Not sure if it is around still since I haven’t been back since pre-Covid, but our kids always liked the go kart/bumper boat/mini golf/jump and swing place nearby (CrackerJax–or Cracker Jacks…?). Old West part of Scottsdale with a stop for ice cream is always good for an afternoon.
Not sure if Camelback or Squaw Peak (has a different name now) are too challenging, but they have decent areas to hike before it gets too elevated.
Sedona is about a 2 hour ride away and that’s with a drive that has almost no places to stop. I would never do that in that short amount of time–you’ve killed half a day just in driving and Sedona traffic can get bad.
Anon
The musical instrument museum was great. It has some areas where kids can actually touch/use some of the musical instruments.

McCormick Stillman Railroad Park is fun for kids, Butterfly Garden was a hit, zoo is nice!

Depending on when in January, you can do Zoo Lights at the Phoenix Zoo (runs into mid January):

You can also do a hike at Papago Park near the zoo:

Search “blue wash trail” in Tonto national forest. Just under 3mi and mostly flat; you get to walk along some creek beds. I really enjoyed it.

old town tortilla factory and oregano’s pizza. have fun!

There is a ridiculous restaurant there called Rustlers’ Rooste that my children LOVE. It features a live bull named Horney, a slide to get down to the seating, and live music.
Anonymous
Dreamy Draw is in the same park as Piestewa Peak but it’s mostly flat, and has lots of different trails of varying lengths and difficulties. I used to hike there all the time–if you just do the paved trail it’s only a mile or so, but if you go back into the desert and climb all the hills, it can be several very strenuous miles. Piestewa Peak is great, of course, but it’s VERY steep and the trail is pretty crowded (a lot of people run up it for exercise) while Dreamy Draw is more laid-back. It’s also very easy to get to, right off the highway.
DC Restaurants
Reposting as I seem to have been stuck in m0d for the morning thread.
Any restaurant recommendations for the Dupont Circle or White House area? I’m in DC for work this week and looking to take some colleagues out. Any cuisine. Thanks!

Keren cafe is an excellent Ethiopian restaurant. They used to be cash only. Across the street is a place called Jack Rose. Whiskey and cigar bar but they also have food. We really enjoyed the downstairs bar they have (it does require reservations). Bombay Club by the White House has good Indian food and serves regional food that you won’t find in lot of places like Maharashtrian food.
anon a mouse
+1 Bombay Club. I was there recently and the Thalis (sampler plates) are great, as is the crispy kale. Owned by the same group as Rasika (which is a little further than where you want to be but also great).
Anon
Keren is absolutely incredible. That whole corner is good (and a huge walk down memory lane to my early 20s): Keren, Jack Rose are probably what you’re looking for but also, the Blaggard and Duccinis.
Anon
We take lots of our clients to Joe’s at 750 15th St NW. Other options near the WH include Old Ebbitt Grill and Hamilton.
joan wilder
I’d take a look at the Eater DC neighborhood guide and the “heat map” and find some places that sound good to you. Near the White House is more expense account, less interesting food. A couple options in the Dupont Area (using the wide interpretation): Boqueria (Spanish tapas), Iron Gate, Chiko (Korean fusion-delicious but might be too casual for you), and in a sort of in between neighborhood, Dauphine’s (New Orleans cuisine)
Anonymous
ooh I love ChiKo because it’s so delicious but also very casual so ymmv with OP’s colleagues! I also third the suggestion of Bombay Club above.

Now that Halloween is over, what are your favorite winter scented candles? I know I will be through my fall/pumpkin scented candles well before Thanksgiving.
I’m partial to pine and wood cabin type smells, sometimes orange/pomander, but open to all!
Anon
My favorite winter candle is Feu de Bois by diptyque. It’s pricey but soooo good. I look forward to winter every year so I can burn it.
Anon
+1 and also Pomander from Diptyque, plus they release a few holiday scents every year. Expensive candles are worth the splurge.
Anon
OP here – I had the Pomander and the Sapin last year – so lovely.
But every time my college aged daughter is here she lights a candle in every room, and I’m doing ok, but I’m not doing Diptyque in every room ok!

Stonewall Kitchen candles for the win. I love Apple Orchard.

I love Bath and body Works winter candle. It has a clean wintry smell – I think it’s pine and clementine. It smells like living in a west elm catalog. 😂

I love a statement necklace, but this is not a statement I want to make.

It reminds me of one of those teething necklaces. The tortoiseshell version is much better.
I haven’t seen many statement necklaces around (except for the turquoise that is ubiquitous here). The BR chainmail necklace looks interesting, though – it would jazz up a simple c0llared shirt.

This breakfast strata is a hit with our family: https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ellie-krieger/broccoli-mushroom-and-cheese-breakfast-strata-recipe-1947637

My brunch menu that always gets rave reviews:
– egg and sausage bake (uses white bread between the layers, so it stands up like brownies, so not as messy as something like scrambled eggs – AND can be made the night before)
– hash brown casserole
– DIY ham sandwiches (Sister Schubert frozen rolls heated up and Kentucky Legend ham slices, cut in half)
– Pumpkin bread (or whatever for the season – the Libby pumpkin bread kit gets insane compliments and it’s easy. Skip the icing that comes with it.)
– Fruit
Done!

Best Chicago-style pizza in Chicago? and which location if several?
Anon
Assuming you mean deep dish? (Many locals think thin crust cut into squares is more local; deep dish is delicious but more of a tourist thing.) I like Lou Malnati’s best of the chain places. The original Pizzeria Uno downtown is also very good and very different than the chain Uno restaurants found in malls and airports.
Anon
Pequod’s caramelized crust for deep dish
Coalfire for coal oven
Pat’s for thin crust tavern style
Jimmy’s for NY style
Spacca Napoli for Neapolitan style
Dimo’s for fun flavors
Anon
Also, Milly’s and George’s are incredible but they are very far north.
Anonymous
I’m in the northern suburbs and had my first Pequods. I’m not even a pizza person or deep dish pizza person, but holy heck was that amazing. There is a reason it’s an institution.
Chicagoan
Lou Malnatis. The one in Gold Coast on State St is close to Michigan Avenue shopping. Do not get Giordanos under any circumstances – it’s bland and flavorless.
Anon
Giordano’s is sooo bad. I don’t understand why people like it.
Aunt Jamesina
For deep dish, Pequod is my fave for a non-chain. For a chain it’s Lou Malnatis (any location should be good), but they’ve been uneven in quality since the pandemic started IMO. Ask for your pizza to be well done at Lou’s.
Anonymous
Pequod’s!!!
312
Agree with the Lou Malnati recommendations. I’ll also throw out Pizano’s, which is a pizza place opened by Lou’s brother. Pizano’s has a crisper crust. Also, if you are by Chicago pizza & oven grinders, the flat bread and potpie pizza is amazing. Have fun!

What is the popular time of year for job postings? Before the end of the year? After the new year? I’m looking for a new job and there is just nothing out there for me to apply to.
Anonymous
This isn’t seasonal
Chl
I think many companies have just entered into some kind of slow down or freeze going into q4. It’s actually a good time to network and do informational interviews. As posts open up going into new years you are well positioned.
anon_needs_a_break
Yes, I’m even hearing that companies with postings aren’t actually hiring for them, they just don’t want to signal a recession so they keep listings up.
Cat
at this point, people want their bonuses; things usually thaw a bit in Jan-Feb.
Anon
Between now and January, things will likely slow due to holidays/people being out/bonuses, as noted. I am also looking and expect there won’t be much… but if jobs are posted it’s a good time to apply as those same people staying to get their bonuses are not competing with you.
Anon
It probably depends on the field. Back in the spring/summer of this year I was looking for a new job and there were TONS, which was great because it allowed me to be really picky.
Betsy
Also looking, also have given up on finding anything before the new year. Fine with that, because I hate starting a new job in the middle of the holidays.

Have individual health insurance as I am a freelancer. Found out my insurance company is dropping individual insurance and I need to find a new plan. Current plan covers mental health 100% with high deductible for the rest, which was a risk I was willing to take as I knew I needed therapy most. New options are all high deductible, nothing covering even half of mental health until deductible is paid. So now I have to try to go from weekly sessions of maintenance and dealing with bigger things when they arise to now trying to fit in 2x weekly sessions til the end of the year to see if I can hit as many big things as possible before time runs out.
We all say to go to therapy, I agree. It just shouldn’t be so hard to access it. Someone please introduce me to a spouse who is a citizen elsewhere so I can go.
Anon
I’m not a freelancer, but if you do the math on my government employer plans, the highest deductible plan is always the best value. “Best” in quotes because it’s still insanely pricey. My deductible is $13k for me and my daughter and this year we had to pay about $11k out of pocket due to occupational therapy for her, some screening tests for me and routine healthcare for both of us. I make $52k, so it was literally one fourth of my pre-tax salary. Sometimes I really hate living in the US.
Anon
Does it have a good HSA? A friend of mine just paid for some very, very extensive health needs with years and years of HSA money and it made me realize how HSA can work out.
Our only option is no deductible (and it’s spendy).
Anon
We have an HSA we can self fund, but minimal employer contributions ($400/year). With a kid I’ve never not used all of it since that’s like two pediatrician visits. It works out pretty well for my husband who normally has minimal healthcare costs, but not so much for kids, especially ones who have any special needs.
Coach Laura
Sorry – I don’t want to seem like I’m lecturing, but if someone has an HSA available and is going to spend $1000, or $5000, or $10,000 for either deductible or out-of-pocket costs, they should self-fund their HSA to that level, even if the employer doesn’t.
First, the money is tax-free, so it goes further. That can be a good savings.
Second, I’ve used it as a savings vehicle to prepare for expensive things like dental crowns or surgeries. Then the money is there when I need it.
Third, it’s not use-it-or-lose-it and can grow and stay available like a 401k. It can be used for medical costs even after retirement.
You may need to do some calculations – monthly cost plus deductible – for any insurance options. Some insurance companies with give HR this type of service for employees, where the insurance company runs the numbers for you.
In summary, if you know you’re going to need it there’s no reason not to self-fund. I wish I’d started using HSA plans 10 years ago instead of four years.
Anon
Yes, we do contribute, but it’s not free money. It still comes out of my pocket, and other than the tax advantages (which are pretty minimal in my income bracket) it’s not really different than any other form of savings. It’s certainly not a bad thing to have, but it doesn’t really mitigate the financial burden of having such a huge deductible.
Anon
The high deductible may be the best plan but for the chronically ill (me) a gold level plan pays for itself almost immediately. The real savings are on the drugs.
Anon
What can you find on the government marketplace site? I’m a freelancer in California, and I just plug in my business net income (NOT gross!!!) and play with the numbers until I get a plan I can afford even WITH the subsidy.
Anon
Check out Freelancers Union Health Insurance. They bundle you with other freelancers for better rates.

Where would you shop for an elevated work dress? I’m going to a reception hosted by our CEO in his home, and I’m one of the honorees. My style did work is frankly lacking, and this is a time to show up looking like I’ve got my stuff together, and is the first time I’m meeting senior leadership in person instead of zoom. I love The Fold and am comfortable spending up to $350 on this, but I’m
a 16 or 18 and I’m not sure where to go on this.
Anonymous
Rent the Runway. Some OK dresses on sale at 11 Honore right now but their inventory stinks since they merged or whatever with Dia.
Also take a look at Lafayette 148, Elie Tahari, and Vince – they all come up to size 16/18 I think. Kiyonna isn’t really elevated but could work here.
Anon
EXACT thoughts on 11 Honore! I’m so bummed that they merged and have basically no options now. I had already bought from them when they were a standalone and was really happy with it.
Anonymous
MMLaFleur has some dresses with architectural details similar to what you see at The Fold in that price range in sizes 16 and 18.
Anon
mm lafleur 16s only for me when I got to a size 12
Anon
Have you tried MM Lafleur?
Anonanonanon
Not OP but I bought the Jillian dress in size 16 and missed the return window. I’m short and apple shaped, and it’s going to take a lot of alterations to work, which I was bummed about given the price tag. But especially if you’re taller that might be a good option.
Anon
Macy’s has some nicer plus sized dresses. There’s a green calvin klein sheath that’s gorgeous.
Boden has limited work-appropriate dresses (so many midi prairie dresses), but they really excel in that size range.
Also check Nordstrom–they are hit and miss. If you are taller and Long of Waist, Look at LongTallSally.

I went from 125lbs to 155lbs over the last couple years. I had my Hinge profile on pause for a very long time and just unpaused and updated it, including full body photos. I get maybe one like every few days now whereas I used to get dozens a day when I was thinner, and maybe it’s coincidental, but it really feels like it’s not and man it stings.
Anon
When you first join Hinge, they boost you so tons of people are seeing your profile. It may just be that you’re no longer being boosted and this is now the regular cadence of likes that most women get. FWIW, I’m very conventionally attractive and got a couple of likes that very few days when I was on Hinge, while my less conventionally attractive friends (still obviously beautiful, but just not as male-gaze-catering) were getting flooded with likes when they first joined. It’s just the algorithm working in weird ways.
Also – in the case that it isn’t a coincidence, look on the bright side: you’re filtering out all the guys you know are shallow and only getting the ones who aren’t.

Cat
FWIW I’m guessing the second spelling is an invention resulting from (1) the way US speakers pronounce camaraderie, essentially omitting a syllable, and (2) the meaning of the word camaraderie making it seem like comrade is the natural source.
But it’s 100% incorrect anyway :)
Anonymous
Wow embarrassing to be arguing for the second option
