We’re moving from NYC to the DC area and are trying to decide if it’s worth it to shell out the cash to hire professional movers to do the move the entire way down. The alternative is to hire people to load and unload a Uhaul truck that we drive down ourselves (about a 5 hour drive normally). (I’m also pregnant, for what it’s worth, but I wouldn’t be lifting boxes at all.)
Hiring professional movers will cost us a little over $4K. The alternative option is about $1500. We can definitely afford the professional movers, but it’s hard for me to stomach spending so much more for something as annoying as moving. Follow-up question, how much would you tip the professional movers for the whole move if they load/unload and drive (pre-tip cost is about $3800)? Thanks in advance!

For us, it was very worth it. The movers packed all of our kitchen stuff (and basically nothing got broken) and I know if I had packed it myself it would have been very time-consuming and stuff probably would have gotten damaged. It really took a lot of stress out of moving. Also, keep in mind moving expenses are tax deductible, so if you’re in a 30% tax bracket, the cost is really 4000*.7 = $2800.
Look for a “do not exceed” estimate if you can – most companies gave us a fixed estimate (which I gather is standard for a small apartment) but we found one that was “do not exceed” and it came in well under their estimate (which was already one of the lower estimates we got).
I tipped the guys who packed our kitchen and loaded the truck $20 each (there were 3 of them and they did a super job). I didn’t tip the unloaders – I wasn’t super impressed with them and they didn’t do nearly as much work since they didn’t do any packing and they were unloading boxes onto the first floor of a single family home, not a second floor walk-up like the loaders.

I will say $4000 seems a bit high for such a short distance unless you’re moving a multi-bedroom single family home and have lots of furniture. Our cross-country move was significantly less than that (for a 1BR apartment). But I still think it’s worth it if you can afford it, especially being pregnant.

Well, I think we’re paying NYC prices, even though it’s just a big one bedroom apartment.

I have paid for movers the last 4 times I have moved. SOOOOO worth it. I paid around $3k for a VA to PA move (with a stop in the middle to pick up stuff), so $4k doesn’t sound unreasonable to me. I have about a 2 bedroom house worth of stuff.

Have you considered doing a POD or UPackIt box instead? When we moved from PA to FL, they were a godsend. We had movers load the POD for us and unload it when we arrived, but then POD transported it for us.
The cost for the POD and the movers on either end+tip was about $1000, so way cheaper for us than full-service movers and less hassle than driving a truck.
Batgirl
Thanks, I’d never heard of this. Googling now!
Batgirl
After looking into it, I’m not sure that will work in NYC (nowhere to put the pod as we fill it). Thanks for the suggestion, though!
KT
I was in Center City, Philly–the POD just took up one parking space, and it was dropped off/picked up the same day

I really wanted to do a POD type thing for a cross-country move we just did, but the City of Chicago bans parking them on the street. So you have to pay for a truck to come load your things, and then movers put them in a pod somewhere in the suburbs, then someone will drive the pod to where you’re going. Since I was super worried about stuff getting lost (some friends had some horror stories) I did not like the idea of some transfer to a pod happening out of sight.

My parents used a POD-type company for a move from WI to FL and were super happy with it. They loaded and unloaded the container themselves and are sending another one down this winter.

You might want to check if your moving expenses are deductible. If so, maybe that makes it an easy Yes to professional movers. I have no idea how a POD would work in NYC.

FWIW, I moved across the state in MA and paid for load/unload only (no packing or unpacking). Cost was about $2400 (~1200 sqft house to ~3000 sq ft house), and I shopped around–got LOTS of different quotes and that was by far the lowest.
To me, for a haul like NY to DC, $4k sounds like money well spent.
Jen
It also depends how nice your stuff is. The professionals are insured and well practiced; locals may be more of a cr@p shoot and who knows how secure things will be or how neatly / efficiently they will be packed up.

Middle aged DC resident here. If you hire DC movers to unload a UHaul, hire Bookestore Movers. They’re very good and reasonably priced.

I would definitely hire a reputable professional moving company instead of hiring local people to load/unload on each end. We have done two moves with high-quality moving companies and they were relatively stress-free. All of our furniture was properly disassembled, protected, and set back up. All of the boxes found their way to the correct rooms. None of our dishes were broken. For our last move, we hired an inexpensive local moving company on an hourly basis, and they were just awful. They scuffed the walls, loaded the truck in what did not appear to be the correct manner, damaged some of our furniture, and basically just dumped everything in the general area where it was supposed to go. If you can afford it, go ahead and pay the pros. Especially if you’re pregnant–you just don’t need the hassle.

Is there still an active support group for the ladies on here with Crohn’s Disease and other such issues? I am having health problems in this veing and I need help with what questions to ask my doctor and such. If so, can someone in the group email me at Alicethepointyhaired (at) gmail (dot) com? Thank you!!

I am a new attorney. I looked for jobs at firms out of law school, but my geographic limitations were very specific and I did not find one, so I began taking appointments as a solo practitioner. I am wondering what a reasonable case load is for a solo practitioner working without a staff, from home, and having only been practicing for 5 1/2 months. With my current caseload, I can bill 35 to 40 hours a week, but I still have enough flexibility to take some time off if I want to. I currently have 55 open cases: 21 criminal General Sessions, 3 Criminal Court VOPs, 1 waiting to be indicted, and 30 dependency and neglect cases in various stages. I also have 15 additional cases that are closed in court, but I need to close out my office files and bill the state. I am feeling as though it might soon be time to start refusing appointments, but I felt the same way when I hit 30 cases, and then I quickly adjusted to it, 40 cases and then I adjusted, and so on. I am practicing in an impoverished area, so as long as I don’t refuse cases, I can expect to continue picking up 3-5 new cases per week. For attorneys here, can you tell me how many cases you consider to be a full caseload? Or if you are/were doing this type of appointed work, how many cases were you handling at one time? Thanks in advance your advice and comments.
Wildkitten
I’m not a solo practitioner but – check if your local bar has a solo practitioners group. Also, the ABA has resources and is free for your first year after bar admission.

Thank you for replying, Wildkitten. I have considered asking some other attorneys I know, but did not want to appear as if I was not up to the challenge of a heavy caseload if 55-70 cases is really considered child’s play which I will soon adapt to. I will consider reaching out to them anyways.
