Dillards is having one of their big clearance sales, with lots of good workwear brands on sale, including Antonio Melani (a sister brand to Tahari by ASL and T Tahari), Calvin Klein, MICHAEL Michael Kors, Ivy & Blu, Donna Morgan, Vince Camuto, and Catherine Catherine Malandrino. Tons of stuff under $50, including most of the dresses pictured below. Readers, what do you like to buy at Dillards? (Here's a fun random question: I kind of consider Dillards a “local” department store because I've shopped at it in Ohio (and I think it's in the South too?) but doubt most New Yorkers have heard of it. Meanwhile, some New Yorkers are familiar with Century 21, whereas most people in other parts of the country think of that as a realty company. Which are your favorite local/regional department stores?)
Back to the Dillards sale… it includes a few Hall of Famers are on sale, including:
- Ivy & Blu Ruched Faux Wrap Dress — was $98 now $35
- Karen Kane Faux-Wrap Dress with short sleeves, including one in a hieroglyphic print (was $108 now marked to $38) and one in a diamond print (was $128 now $46)
Pictured at top: I like this Tahari by ASL Bow Ponte Sheath Dress, available in pink and in black in sizes 2-16 — it was $128 now $46. A few other nice picks:

I cannot keep track of the Tahari variations.

Bought a bunch of Fall stuff there, including a pair of KUT jeans that are probably the best fitting jeans I’ve ever owned. Also a dark wash Levi’s trucker jacket. Think I paid $35 for each piece.
Will be mourning the untimely demise of Loehmanns forever and anon.

Ditto on Loehmanns. And Filene’s Basement, oy vey.
Can anyone say anything about Stein Mart?

Stein Mart is hit or miss for me. I’ve gotten some pieces from there that I have worn to death, but you have to be willing to shop for a bit. Most of the brands seem to be some sort of house brands that I haven’t heard of. Prices are good. I also have had luck buying accessories, decor (faux leather parsons style chairs that are still holding up 5 years later), and men’s clothes. Their selection of men’s golf clothes is really well priced and has some of the nicer brands (Callaway, Bobby Jones, etc).

Just wanted to say that the Antonio Melani collections at Dillards is one of my favorite places to shop. I get the best work dresses there, and I think the quality is great for the non-sale prices, and I always wait for the stuff to go on sale.

To me, it seems like there really aren’t many regional department stores left – the ones that do still exist have been bought up by the larger chains (Federated, I’m looking at you).

I cannot believe that this is now “Macy*s”.
I do have a Chicago question. Inevitably, Chicago aldermen are described as “powerful.” What gives? Is there some sort of special graft opportunities in Chicago that other cities don’t have? I would never think of local city-level politicians as powerful (or even important). There are the ones you recognize b/c they are the idiots always spouting off on the 11:00 news, and then there are the ones who just get stuff done (and area always re-elected since we are so good at gerrymandering). We have our share of corruption (but it is perhaps remarkable for what low stakes get spelled out in the indictment and the relatively modest livestyles they have even with graft).

I mean, it’s been nearly 10 years, you’ve had time to adjust….
City precinct/neighborhood/ward representatives are powerful in any major city. They can have a significant impact on city improvement projects, taxes, business development, transportation, etc. Their actions can impact your commute, whether there is going to be construction near you, whether your air is more/less polluted, whether a movie can film next to your office….so, so many things. I mean, do you think the mayor is not important? Because the scope of what he can do can be limited or expanded in many ways by the city council.

I think it’s that Chicago alderman are always described as “powerful” and local politicians are just referred to as “City Councilman/woman X” (no adjective).
I don’t know if it is something about the structure of Chicago’s government (as opposed to NYC or LA) or something else, but if it reads as if they are some local warlord or something (the way you can have overseas where the government is weak / in turmoil and there are militias / factions / narco-governments). But it’s here and not there.

For the love of tasteful jewelry, when will the bubble necklace die?
Hildegarde
Agreed. I don’t think “tasteful” has to mean “small;” I just hate the bubble necklaces and cannot believe they have hung around for as long as they have.

Can anyone comment on the sizing of Karen Kane dresses? There’s a non-returnable lace sheath I like, but I’m hesitant to pull the trigger on a dress that would definitely fit but might be a little too body con for my comfort.

Dillard’s is headquartered in Arkansas. So you are correct that it’s also in the South!
