My podiatrist has told me that I need to start commuting in supportive sneakers. None of what he calls “deconstructed” sneakers that have become popular and cute but provide little support.
I need to get wides because of my bunions although the back of my feet aren’t wide. Zappos is driving me nuts because all unis3x sneakers that are technically “B” width show up in my searches for wides because they say those shoes are equivalent to wides (although I totally disagree).
Any suggestions or does anyone want to shop for me? I’d like a darker color and can spend up to ~$150, which is a little flexible.
Anonymous
I’d go with New Balance. They come in actual W widths.

I’ve got a similar problem with a wide toe box but normal heels. I usually go to a place like Fleet Feet to get fitted and then stick to a similar shoe for awhile – New Balance works but also Brooks (which naturally run wide there). I add inserts – used to be custom orthotics but have ‘graduated’ to standard ones that I also get there.
shopping challenged
Do the pads (that you put inside the sides of the heel end) work?
Anon in NYC
I agree that you might need to be fitted at a shoe store. I just bought the Sketchers Go Walk 3 on Amazon. They have an “E” width. They feel very comfortable to me, but I’m not sure if they would be supportive enough. But they were inexpensive (<$50).
anon
These are basically the only shoes I can wear comfortably. I love them. So padded.
Anonymous
I love my Go Walks, I walk to work and they’re the best commuting shoes. I also wore them walking miles around Disney.
Sydney Bristow
I just ordered these. They might not be supportive enough but I’ll give it a shot. If they don’t work it looks like going to a specialty shop is next. Thanks all!
Diana Barry
I would go to a running store and try on wide widths. I have found (bunions, narrow heel) that only a very few sneakers fit me well, and they are generally white w/ colors. The ones I have now are Saucony. Brooks don’t fit me at all (too wide top to bottom).
Anonymous
Look for shoes with a stretchy front, so it’ll accomodate your bunion without you needing to get a wide. Otheriwse I think Vionic makes wide casual/active-looking sneakers.
Anonymous
All I wear are Sketchers. I have bunions and they are very comfortable.
Lydia
My podiatrist suggested new balance, saucony, or asics. He also said that perhaps ecco shoes, dansko, or naot type shoes support the foot, arch, and absorb shock when walking… He looked at my sketchers with my custom orthotic insert inside, and said the shoes did not actually support the orthodic working properly…but I could wear them for a couple of hours if I wanted. Basically, a shoe that is rigid (but can have cuishoning on top of a rigid base) works best…it just takes time to find on that works.

Does anyone have a work-appropriate blouse / top / sweater you love, that has elbow or 3/4 length sleeves? Or even short sleeves if there is a true sleeve, not capped. Something that can stand on its own without a cardigan or jacket but that would allow for it if the AC required it. Small-busted. Business casual. (Would love one that comes in 5 colors that are all perfect for me, but that’s just asking way too much!)
Anonymous
This is my unicorn. I am also small busted. Many of the favorites here work less well/are too boxy for me. And the 3/4 sleeve is my favorite and hard to find in decent fabrics, work-appropriate.
I will be following this thread!
Anne
LL Bean has some great 3/4 length tops, and they’re often on sale. I am also small-busted and in a business casual environment and I find a suitable top every time I go to their website.
Bluestocking
Similar build, and I have 3 Saxxon wool crewneck sweaters from Brooks Brothers that work on their own or with a jacket over or a collared blouse under. My sweaters are all long-sleeved (link to follow), but I thought I remembered 3/4 sleeves being available as well, though I don’t see short or 3/4 sleeves on the website now. I often push the sleeves up to about 3/4, and they stay there on their own pretty well. My sweaters were winter items in darker winter colors that I got on sale for around $70 each at the end of the season last year. BB has spring colors now, but they’re pricier. My sweaters have held up well with frequent wear and gentle machine washing over the last year.
Bluestocking
On closer look, this isn’t exactly the same as the sweaters I have, because mine don’t have dolman sleeves:

I just ordered the Ruffle Sleeve Pintuck Tee from Ann Taylor since it finally went 40% off. I haven’t tried it on yet but I really like the elbow length sleeves.
LBH for the win!
There is also a v-neck. They come in a million colors. They have a double layer in the front. I have about 5 of them. I wash mine and let them hang to dry.

This looks like a great basic. Are they “nice” enough to wear with a pencil skirt/pants equivalent at work, without a sweater/blazer?
Can you tell me anything about this brand? Do they fit big/small/to size? They don’t have a great size chart…. How well to they hold up?
Jules
I’ve had one in my Amazon cart for a while (Amazon sells a couple of the many colors), probably will go ahead and order straight from LBH based on this rec. FWIW, a couple of the Amazon reviews say they run small.
Anonymous
I have 5 and wear to work all the time. I like a colored solid by itself, esp. if I can get one that picks up a color in a scarf (which was the trick to get me to wear scarves instead of just buy them b/c OMG so pretty). They are also great for travel. I’ve not found them to get stinky if I have to wear them 2x on a trip.
I think they are the nicest iteration of what it is. I have tried cheaper and more expensive versions of this and it is the best I’ve found after about 10+ years of looking (Target, of all places had a similar basic, single-layer, around 2001).
My oldest one is 3 years old and looks new.
They do run small.
Jules
I think I have several of those Target versions (V-necked, short-sleeved)! They are somehow still presentable, just wore one this week. I’m going to order a couple of the LBH versions but worry they will be too hot in warm weather.
I am ALWAYS looking for a short-sleeved, V-neck, dressy fabric (i.e., not cotton jersey) tee. Silk, raw silk, matte jersey, even a nice polyester. (I found a lovely one at Ann Taylor last year, a crepe flutter sleeve, and accidentally melted it with a hot iron. It sold out immediately, so could not be replaced. I actually got tears in my eyes when it happened.)
Any recs for this unicorn?
AEK
@ Jules—Boden’s Ravello V-neck?
Jules
Oh, those are cute. I’m busty, and I’m not sure about the pleats/gathers at the neckline but I might give it a try. Too bad they don’t come in plain black. (I know, I know, I’m being too picky.)
Gail the Goldfish
@Jules-they change the colors/patterns the ravello comes in fairly frequently (seasonally?), so they may have them in black at some point. Actually, the scoop neck version of the ravello is currently available in black if you want to give that a try.
Anonymous
Thanks a million for this info, and for sharing your find. Really appreciated.
Jules
Gail, something about my busty physique makes V-necks look so, so much better than scoops, not sure why.
I’ll keep an eye out for the Ravello V-neck in black, thanks for the head’s up. And the current colors and patterns (I kind of dig that bold polka dots) all seem to be sold out in my size (unless they run small?)
Thanks!
Meg Murry
This is my go-to short sleeved sweater that I can wear under a blazer or cardigan (I don’t wear a matching cardigan like a twinset, but rather pair a color with gray or black). There is also a 3/4 sleeved version that I have and like, but it doesn’t have many colors right now – there will be more in the fall. It’s a good go-to for fall and spring, but too hot for summer.
I’m busty so maybe it would be too boxy/not slim enough for you, but it comes in all kinds of variations (petite, tall, etc) so you may be able to play around with the sizing to find a fit that works for you.

My favourite work top is the NYDJ henley blouse. Nordstrom has it. Comes in a zillion solids and patterns. I love how it drapes, the sleeves are 3/4 and it has a pretty pleat detailing in the back. I wash on delicate and line dry.
Anonymous
Try the mm LaFleur deneuve top. I find that it is fairly warm, on top of meeting the other requirements.
Anonymous
Calvin Klein has some round neck, short sleeve tops …they’re knit and cone in lovely Colours.
Anonymous
Where do you get them?
Anonymous
I’m in Asia but I would assume the US store also has them? Less than US100.
Fishie
All my Boden dresses and many of their tops are 3/4 sleeve. I also have t-shirts by 3 dots that I got from Zappos or Nordstrom. I have also purchased long sleeved t-shirts and jackets and had them taken up to 3/4 sleeve.
I love a 3/4 sleeve. Already Pretty did a post about that a few years ago. They’re particularly flattering fbecause they draw the eye toward the waist. I am busty/curvy and I think the 3/4 sleeve shows the smallest part of my arm in a flattering way.

3/4 sleeves
And for those of us who are short waisted, it balance things out and makes us look more proportional.

I just got this in coral and I LOVE it. Now I want all the colors. It’s really flattering

Lo & Sons Seville
I have an OG that I really like but only use for travel b/c my laptop is too large to use with it and a large volume of paper work documents on a daily basis for carrying to/from home.
I really, really think that the Seville would combine the functionality of the OG and the wide-ness of the freebie tote / laptop sleeve that I am currently using for daily schlepping. And it’s on sale.
The OG would have been perfect if I didn’t need to bring a giant laptop back/forth every day. Does anyone gotten one of these / can comment?
JP
To me the bag feels like there’s a lot going on/a lot of “process” (for lack of a better word) involved in using it. But I do like the way that it looks when it’s all put together. Would love to hear others’ opinions.
Anonymous
I don’t think I’d swap out the shells except maybe for the travel one, but the wideness of it is so, so appealing. My current big bag (freebie with logo on it) probably needs an upgrade (although I get a freebie with a logo on it pretty much yearly; I have no idea who the logo is for even — I hope it’s not some sort of viagra-type drug).
Without all of the features, I think it would be a great bag.
Minnie Beebe
I recently purchased a Seville. I like the bag a lot – it’s what I was looking for: no bling, sturdy, with a zip top. It’s not perfect – it doesn’t really fit a ton. Like, I can’t fit a pair of shoes and a lunch in addition to laptop, notebook, wallet, sunglasses. But that’s actually okay because I think it would get too heavy with those things inside anyway, so I tend to carry a second small bag if needed.
I’ve only had it for a couple months, so can’t comment on durability.
Seville
I also have a Seville, and I love it. The only downside for me is that it doesn’t fit a ton because its sides aren’t “squishy” (unless you use the travel sleeve), so you can’t stuff things into it. But it is way sleeker than my old Brookline or the OG.

Any advice on how to handle negotiating w/current job when you receive an outside offer? Is there a way to do this without seeming like it’s a threat?
Anon2
http://www.askamanager.org/2012/03/why-you-shouldnt-take-a-counteroffer.html
Anonymous
I didn’t read the link…but I’d make the case for the raise independent of the other offer. If they say no, you can come back with “I have another offer at X. I was hoping you’d be amenable to meeting that, but if not I’ll be strongly considering that role.” But only say it if you mean it.
Anonymous
I wouldn’t phrase it like that. When I used an external offer for leverage, I told them the offer and opportunity were very good but I was interested in staying with the company if we could make it work.
I took a counter but meh, because now 4 months later I am leave. Part of my retention was a mid-fiscal year bonus which said to me, you don’t have a future at this company past this fiscal year.
Anonymous
At my firm, they don’t consider outside offers as leverage fit negotiations. Their thought/experience is that if money is the primary driver to stay, those people usually leave in the next year even if they get a raise. We tend to be at least market competitive on pay, however.
Backpacks
My physical therapist wants me to start using a backpack for work instead of a tote. I keep resisting but I know ergonomically, she’s right. Does anyone have recommendations for a pretty, professional backpack (ideally leather) that won’t break the bank? I’d like to keep it under $200 but that may not be realistic.
Jules
My SIL has a beautiful Tumi one, probably out of your price range, though. (Pretty much everything she owns is out of my price range.) Here’s a faux leather one:
http://www.myhabit.com/#page=d&dept=women&asin=B0169937RS&cAsin=B0169937RS&qid=aps-11MET272F1SGDC42CKMP-1458931469113&sindex=13&discovery=search&ref=qd_women_sr_1_13
MyHabit has a selection of stylish backpacks right now, although the one above looks like one of the few that would be big enough to hold a laptop, if that’s what you need.
Anon in NYC
Some of the Tumi ones are gorgeous, but expensive. MZ Wallace has non-leather ones that look nice (~$250). Someone here a few days ago also suggested Knomo. They have leather and non-leather backpacks that look really nice. The leather ones are around $350, but the non-leather ones are under $200.
espresso bean
Someone posted about Knomo backpacks this week, and I thought they were gorgeous! Lots of sleek, professional options.
Emmer
Not leather, but I see tons of professionals carrying Herschel backpacks.
Anonymous
Tumi, Victorinox, and you may be able to check the sales of finer dept stores for fashion brand backpacks, or look at Nordstrom Rack, Off Fifth, etc. Handbag brands make backpacks in leather that are over your price range, but they are often discounted.
Elle G
Functions as a tote or backpack. I do wish it were a bit wider.

Killer Kitten Heels
It’s not leather, but I’m a big fan of the Everlane backpacks. My H has one, and it looks great in spite of getting a lot of wear and tear.

Repeated from weekend post:
Hello, I typically limit my purchases to tier/group 2, but came across a jumpsuit that is currently on sale for $130. I like the neckline, sleeves, waistline, inseam, color and drape. It’s hard to find a jumpsuit as a tall woman, much less one with a tiny bust and pear shape.
Thoughts? Is the price still too high for viscose?
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/diane-von-furstenberg-dezi-jumpsuit/3995657
Anonymous
You won’t be able to tell the quality of the fabric until it’s in hand. I wouldn’t dismiss viscose out of hand, just for being viscose.
Aurora
For splurge pieces like this, there are two things I like to consider: first, will you regret not buying it later? If you like everything about it (except the viscose), based on your search so far, how likely do you think it is that you will run across something this good in the right fabric, versus the likelihood that you keep seeing other things that aren’t quite right in one or more ways? I am always willing to go up a price bucket or two for those rare items I have been looking for forever, even if otherwise I wouldn’t dream of spending that much on a piece.
Second, I’d recommend thinking about this in terms of cost-per-wear and versatility. If you’re used to lower-priced items, $130 is a lot for something that you’re not going to wear more than twice a year, but if it’s something you’ll throw on for multiple different occasions (weekends or for date nights or around the house or whatever), then suddenly it’s really more like finding three items at $45 each (e.g., a $45 date night dress, a $45 weekend outfit, and a $45 house romper). Which would you rather have?
All that aside, I think it’s gorgeous and I say go for it. :)
Anonymous
YouLookFab bought this exact piece recently and posted about it on her blog. Do a search. She loves it.
As someone who has a shape similar to yours, I can imagine you can’t believe your luck to find a jumpsuit that works. But I would also ask myself…. when will I wear it?
If it works in your lifestyle, I think it is simple enough of a piece that you could keep it and wear it off and on for years.
January
Whoa – I hate jumpsuits, and I actually like that one. You have my permission.

I am team jumpsuit. That one is gorgeous. Doooooo it.

What are the tiers to which you refer?
I'm Just Me ....
It’s based on some posts that Kat has made about different price levels. Here is one for professional clothing: https://corporette.com/2014/10/20/professional-clothing-brands/ (although I think she did a more recent one, but it doesn’t show up in the search). She’s also done them for weekend clothing, shoes, handbags, and other things.

Thank you!
I'm Just Me ....
I’m in moderation, the tiers refer to some posts that Kat has done where she breaks down clothing/shoes/handbags into various price points. I linked to a few in my moderated post, so hopefully when it shows up, you can follow the links.

I hope you picked this up. A friend has it and it is gorgeous.

Thanks for the advice, everyone! I purchased it and look forward to wearing it once the weather warms up a bit more.

Bad Knee
I fell a few weeks ago and one knee took the brunt of the fall. It was puffy and bruised and about 3 weeks later is still sore (but not discolored / obviously swollen). I don’t want to run on it and I’ve been so busy at work that I haven’t excercised much in this window. Still, sitting in one position all day probably isn’t good and I am noticing it when I do little things like getting up from sitting.
What is my next step? I could go to an orthopedic urgent care (I don’t think that it’s urgent, but friends say there is 0 waiting and much attention from going in on a Friday of a holiday weekend; also very close to my house) or try to get in with a GP next week (which will be crazy @ work b/c it’s quarter end). I’ve never had knee issues before, so I’m not sure of who I should see.
Ultimately, I’d like for someone to make sure that I didn’t do anything to my knee and if I did, maybe make sure I rehab it correctly. I’ve already done the comfort care (NSAIDs, ice, elevating, resting).
Anonymous
Yes, see a doctor (who will probably make you get an x-ray) just to make sure you haven’t injured it seriously. And then see a physical therapist. They are life savers for this sort of thing! You’re totally right in that you need someone to help you rehab it correctly.
Diana Barry
+1. PT will be very helpful for you.
Baconpancakes
YES. Go to a doctor and ask for a PT referral. I had a similar injury years ago that was shrugged off by my doc, it never quite went back to normal, the pain increased after a few years, and after 5 years of mal-tracking, my cartiledge was a mess and I had to have surgery. My knee will never be the same and is permanently damaged, and I’m tethered to ice packs and meds for the rest of my life. Multiple PTs noted that if I’d built strength back up correctly after the injury, the mal-tracking wouldn’t have happened.
Anonymous
Obviously not a substitute for seeing a doctor, but I did something similar 2.5 months ago and it just now is feeling better. I got an x-Ray and MRI and saw an orthopedic surgeon. The conclusion was that I had a bone contusion and some soft tissue damage that was likely preexisting. I was given the option of PT but by the time I saw the orthopedic surgeon (6 week wait) I felt like my pain level had decreased enough that I wanted to wait and see if it would heal without the hassle of going to PT. I am running again with no problems. But obviously every injury is different and you should at least see your GP.
X
I could have written this post. I’m not a runner, though.
My issue was compounded by the fact that I was in Puerto Rico last week and the hot sun really made the wound gross (lots of pus, etc).
I have exercised – lots of walking both outside and on a treadmill – and that doesn’t seem to be a problem, but bending the knee causes a lot of pain. And sitting for long periods of time – at my desk, on the T, on flights…
DPT
Call your insurance company to see if you need a referral/script to see a physical therapist. Many insurance companies allow you to see a PT without the hassle of seeing an M.D. first. PTs are well trained to determine if you need to see an M.D. to get an xray or MRI, and if you don’t, you’ll save a lot of money.

I need shoe advice! Im a young professional and buy all my shoes (mostly flats) from Payless. I’d like to start investing in better shoes that I don’t need to replace so often. 50-75 bucks is an ideal price but I’m willing to pay more.
AttiredAttorney
I find Nine West a nice first step up from Payless. Some of there stuff is kind of gaudy, but there are plenty of professional flats and low heeled pumps made with real leather in your price range. The two styles I own the most of are their “Oaks” and “Speakup.”
Baconpancakes
If suggest expanding your price range just a tiny bit and moving to Clarks. You can get them on sale sometimes in your price range, and my Plush Rosie Indigo by Clarks black leather ballet flats have worn like iron for 5 years and still look great. They’re not super formal, but one thing I’ve noticed is that pointed flats simply wear faster due to scraping the toes on things. There’s some lucky sizes still on Amazon.
Shopping challenged
The Clarks store at the outlet mall near me has a good selection, and they are very willing to let me know what other store has the style/size I’m looking for. They also have a frequent buyer program, but I don’t buy enough shoes to get my card filled up. In general, I think that brand has a lot more variety than people realize.
Anonymous
I was also going to recommend Clarks, which are in your price range when on sale and very comfortable. Trotters are also in that range, although you have to sift through some old lady shoes.
Nine west are also death for my feet.
In general, at that price point for good shoes, I recommend shopping off-season.
Godzilla
Aerosoles, Naturalizer, Franco Sarto can typically be found from $40-$60 per pair. Professional and comfortable depending on your foot. Nine West feels like death for my feets.

Are Cole haan shoes with rubber soles (e.e., Elsie wedge, tali wedge) resolable by a cobbler? I’d like to buy a pair, but the thought of sending them back to Cole Haan twice a year to get resoled at $80 a pop seems excessive.
Anonymous
Why would they need to be resoled twice a year? I’ve had my tali wedges for multiple years without any resoling necessary.
Anonymous
I’m hard on my shoes… maybe not twice, at least once a year I need them resoled. I’m frustrated because it seems so cheap to put a rubber bottom on otherwise nice shoes.
Anonymous
I’m confused – what would you expect to be on the sole instead? Just a leather sole? Some other material to provide traction? Is there a type of sole you’ve come across that works well for you?
This is probably a question that’s best asked directly of a cobbler (like the one you’ve used) about this specific brand/shoe.
MSJ
If it helps, I have the same issue as you – wearing through rubber soles – and am glad you posted the question. Most of been not too expensive flats, so I’ve thrown them out when they’ve gotten too uneven in the heels. I suspect I will have to do the same with my loafers – given they have distinctive soles, so aren’t something that can be reheeled.
With proper heels, I’ve been able to just replace the heel cap
It’s frustrating because rubber soles are more comfortable but there should be a way to make them last longer. For those of us who have to walk a lot during the course of the day and aren’t able to rely on a pair of commuting shoes and office shoes.
cbackson
If you’re hard on shoes, a leather sole will go faster than a rubber one. A shoe person can put a vibram sole on, which will wear like iron.
Anonymous
This is exactly what I normally do. I’m trying to understand if something similar can be done for the rubber soles. It sounds like 1) not it can’t, and 2) I should walk less.
Anonymous
I think the answer is “We don’t know because we haven’t had your issue, ask your cobbler”.
Anonymous
I’m honestly confused as to why my question is receiving this response from you. I see many other questions of this sort here (e.g. experience tailoring clothes, etc.). Of course not everyone has this issue. That’s why I am asking here, in case there are 1-2 people who might have gone through the same thing.
Anonymous
The cobbler should be able to strip the rubber sole and replace it with a new one.
Anonymous
You shouldn’t need to get a rubber sole resoled twice a year.
Anonymous
That’s my experience, sorry if it is not yours. I likely walk more than you do. The issues tends to the heels rather than the whole shoe, but on rubber soled shoes, that is one and the same.
Anonymous
I walk quite a bit, it has just never happened to me, hence the confusion. Leather soles wear fairly fast, so I do not wear them outside if it is raining. I do have some sport shoes that I have gotten resoled that have a special type of rubber, which is fairly common, so probably a cobbler could resole your rubber shoes if you ask your local one.
Best Coast
I’m late to this, but yes, a cobbler can resole the rubber on Cole Haans. I tend to be hard on shoes, but have had my Air Talia’s for 5 years, and had them retipped twice and resoled with Vibrams bottoms and they have held up beautifully.

Is there no new post today? I’m having the same problem as Jitterbug was last week i.e. working through a breakup and just wanted to send my commiseration/positive vibes over!
KT
Nope, Kat said she would be off for the Easter holiday :(
It took me a while to remember. I kept frantically refreshing. I think that means I’m addicted.
Anon
Well I’m glad Kat is getting a vacation but selfishly, I’m really going to miss the distraction today.
The day after a long weekend sucks normally, trying to work through that while fresh from a breakup is even worse.
KT
Can you take a long lunch or go home a bit early?
Anon
Probably not – I have a ton of deadlines this week. Plus being here is a good distraction. But I’m definitely going to go for a walk to get a treat later.
Jitterbug
Sending hugs! The first couple days are the hardest, but it will get better. There’s someone better out there for you!
Anon
Glad to hear you’ve recovered so quickly!
We were together for a while so I’m a) not entirely sure this is it and b) am having a really tough time but I’m coping by hiding in my office except when absolutely necessary.
Cat
I thought it wasn’t just Kat anymore? Also, I don’t know anyone who has today as a holiday, other than perhaps teachers on spring break. Boo! It can’t be that time consuming to schedule something to auto-post today!
KT
In my area (fairly conservative and religious heavy) everyone has off. So I get it.
Cat
huh. Kat’s in Brooklyn though… anyway, will have to distract myself elsewhere today.
Anonymous
Also in a very Christian red state and I don’t know a single person who has today off and today is not a state holiday. Most people had Good Friday off. Do religious Christians even go to church today?
Anonymous
I agree. It’s absurd that she can’t auto-schedule a post in advance. That takes five minutes. No one is asking her to work a full workday (even though almost everyone in the US is). This isn’t a hobby b l o g, it’s her full-time job.
Anonymous
Oh God, my eyes just rolled so hard. “I don’t understand why someone isn’t just taking time (that I’ve underestimated) to do a think to make life more pleasurable to me”
Anonymous
I mean, considering this is her “job”…she isn’t doing people a favor by posting, she’s doing something that earns her income.
Anonymous
Well, you aren’t being charged a fee to use the site, so she in a way she *is* doing you a favor. She’s just found a way to monetize it.
If it’s a loss of revenue for her, that’s her problem. Maybe she’s done the cost/benefit analysis to know that the impact will be minimal, or just doesn’t think missing one Monday post is going to kill her business model.
I mean, you DID find somewhere to post, right?
Blonde Lawyer
If the point is to have a place to chat, we can all still do that here.
Cat
Yeah, I get it — it’s just the feeling of “taking her audience for granted” created by this unexpected “holiday” — which I don’t often feel here — that led me to comment above.
Jitterbug
I recovered surprisingly quickly, I even met someone over the weekend and we have a date tomorrow night! I wasn’t looking to rebound, I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.
My ex was great, a part of me still wishes we could’ve worked things out, another part of me thinks he could come crawling back at any minute, but going off how well I hit it off with this new guy, he might be an even better match for me. We’ll see!
Senior Attorney
Wow, that’s great! At least it’s a fun distraction, right?
January
That’s the right attitude, for sure! Good luck (and – I know this is super-hard, but – try not to get too far ahead of yourself. Wedding plans can wait ;)).
Jitterbug
Oh I know! I just learned the hard way how misleading the whole first month can be. You think you’re perfect for each other and then suddenly he decides there’s something “off” between you two and dumps you 2 weeks later. Fun times.
In fact, that breakup made me just cynical enough to not get too optimistic.
January
@Jitterbug — aw. I’m sorry to hear that (but, I’ve been there). Glad you’re enjoying getting to know someone new, though!
401(k) q
How do you handle it if you don’t like your employer’s 401(k) options? I think like my money would perform a lot better elsewhere, but then I don’t get the tax advantages. I guess it’s still to your benefit to max out if you can afford to, right…?
KT
That depends; do you get an employer match?
401(k) q
No match at all.
NYC tech
In most cases, I’d still put the money in a 401(k). Chances are, you’ll leave your current job at some point – maybe in 2 years, or 5 years, or whatever. So you put up with a few years of sub-optimal investment performance, and then roll it over into an IRA at the provider of your choice the second that you leave. You never get those years back in terms of tax advantage, so it usually makes sense to make use of them. Of course, there are probably some special circumstances where the numbers don’t work out, but I suspect in most cases you’ll come out ahead with the 401(k) option.
401k
I’ve noticed that many businesses that historically had poor 401K plans with random funds and high fees charged by pricey management companies that lose $$ are finally starting to wise up and switch to more beneficial options – Vanguard, Fidelity, TIAA/CREF etc… with more index funds.
You would be helping yourself AND your colleagues by telling your benefits office your concerns. I suspect you are not the only one who is noticing these numbers. But it is shocking how many people (myself included when younger….) pay almost no attention to what these retirement funds are doing. If you explain that the company will also save $$ most likely by lower fees (sometimes the company pays additional fees directly to the management firms, in addition to the percentages taken out of everyone’s investments), and that everyone at the company will improve their benefits with a better 401K plan
I think the poor management of 401k funds at many companies by predatory financial companies that feed on neglect and ignorance is criminal at times.
padi
I would still contribute to get the tax advantages. When I was stuck with a crummy 401k with high fees in my late 20s/early 30s, I put 100% of the money in the lowest cost index fund (stocks) they offered. In an ideal situation, I would have probably had 90/10 stocks/bonds.
I had a rollover IRA at the time that I invested in a more conservative target date fund (about 80/20) to balance out the risk of having all that 401k money in the stock market.
Anonymous
I’m skeptical of the “tax advantages.” Money put in a 401(k) isn’t tax free, it’s just taxed later. If you’re making $200K now, sure it might be a good bet that you’ll be earning less in retirement. But for someone who earns say, $50K, but is frugal and invests well and expects to have a lot of money by age 65, I’m just not convinced it’s that good a deal. I’ve researched this a lot and have not seen anything to convince me that for someone in my modest tax bracket it’s better than just investing your money on your own. The primary argument against this seems to be “but you might spend it.” If you trust yourself to really save for retirement and you have no employer match, I don’t see the need for a 401(k).
Anonymous
Well, if you take the tax bracket issue away – you can put more into a Roth 401k (18,000-ish) than you can for a Roth IRA (5500), so you can put more money in now with a 401k than you can with an IRA. Assuming your 401k plan has a Roth option, which it may not.
Retirement funds also have particular treatments in terms of bankruptcy and naming beneficiaries vs. other types of funds.
So, if you think you’ll put more than 5500 aside in a year, consider the 401k, even without the match. If you think you would only end up contributing about 5500/6000 via the 401k, skip it and do the IRA of your choice.
investing
But remember that by paying the tax now, you are also losing that $ that could be accruing compound gains for the next 20-30+ years, tax free. You can calculate what that is. You certainly shouldn’t put that money into a brokerage account, or you will be paying tax on the gains for many years as well. To put it into a protected 401K is the way to go. If the 401k is truly terrible and losing $$, then you should complain to your company. But if there are index funds and decent returns then that is probably reasonable.
My income is modest. I first fund a ROTH IRA because I don’t have an employer match for my 401k. Then anything else I can save goes into a 401k. Then if by miracle I have $$ after that from unexpected income/gifts, it goes into my brokerage account. My brokerage account is primarily Vanguard index funds, Berkshire-Hathaway stock, and a small amount of $$ a few “fun” stocks in companies I like (Apple, Tesla).
Anonymous
A traditional (money goes in pre-tax) 401k doesn’t have tax free gains. You pay tax on whatever you pull out of your retirement money, including the gains.
With a Roth, because you’ve already paid tax on the principle the gains are then tax free. So, theoretically its a better idea to pay the tax now on a little money, than later on a lot of money, if you can afford to do so.
Anonymous
You misunderstood my point. Of course you pay the tax on the 401k money when you pull it out. But that is years later, when many/most will be in a lower bracket. I’m saying that as the $ grows you don’t pay tax on those gains. If it is in your brokerage account, you will pay tax on the dividends and possibly capital gains yearly until you get to retirement. So your brokerage account “leaks”, while the 401k does not.
UNLESS your income is so low that your gains are tax free anyway. That’s about 45k-ish if you are single and double that if married. That is an amazing thing in the tax law right now.
And the question you are addressing is whether to put $ in a ROTH vs. a 401K, which is a different question. And then yes, I would agree (especially if your tax rate is low now) that to open a ROTH first is usually better than a tax deferred IRA or 401k with no match.
Anonymous
How can you be taxed on the gains until you realize the gain (by selling the stock)?
Anonymous
And I think you misunderstand the definition of “tax-free growth”. That means you are never taxed (during growth or at withdrawal) on the gains made. So, no money does not grow tax free in a traditional 401k – you pay tax when you realize the growth (aka take the money out). Which is also how it works with stocks – you pay tax when you realize the gain (sell the stock). You don’t periodically pay a tax based on the value of a stock you continue to own.
Health Savings Accounts have tax free growth. Roth IRAs have tax free growth. Traditional 401ks do not have tax free growth.
Unless there is money in your pocket, you don’t pay anything to the government. If you are paid a dividend, then yes, you pay tax, because it’s money in your pocket, not a on-paper increase in the current value of a piece of property.
WestCoast Lawyer
My understanding is that, while you won’t pay taxes on individual stocks until you sell, you can often end up with a tax bill for mutual funds if they are held outside of a tax-deferred account based on the trading of the underlying fund. So just because you invested $100 in a Vanguard fund and planned to hold it until retirement doesn’t mean you won’t have a tax bill (unless you hold it in a 401(k), IRA, etc.).
Anonymous
Exactly West Coast Lawyer.
We are talking about simple investing, which is what the typical investor is doing. 401k funds vs. funds in a brokerage account.
Anon for this
Is there anything I can do to fix a pair of nice work pants that creep up just a tiny bit too high in the inseam? They feel fine at first but start making me uncomfortable down there during the day. Has anyone found that losing weight resolved this problem for you? I have such trouble finding a park that fits that I’d like to try and make this pair work.
Diana Barry
You mean the rise is too short? Not much you can do about it – I would try more different pants/different brands, or maybe tall sizes would have a longer rise.
OP
I don’t think the rise is too short. I’ll say it a different way – basically I can feel the crotch seam creeping up into my lady parts. I’m wondering if I lose weight the pants will sit lower and not creep up as high.
K
Agree that yes a few lbs down in the hips/butt will allow the pants to sit lower with less creeping. My pants that fit fine start to get this problem when I put on a few lbs – it’s one of the first indicators for me.
Anonymous
It could be the cr0tch depth is too shallow for you – a measurement (i think) you would take by taking one end of a flexible tape measure at your bellybutton and then threading it thru your legs and up to the back. You could then compare that measurement to the comparable seam of your pants.
However, weight loss isn’t going to do a ton to change this measurement (might do a little, though).
pants
I have this issue and this is due to my voluminous butt. All of my extra weight goes to my butt and thighs. So when I lose even 4-5 lbs, I can move from one pant size to another. That is not a lot of weight, so it is a source of endless frustration. So I keep pants of two sizes in my closet at all times.
This also makes tailoring clothes difficult, as I have to decide… which size do I tailor to?!?!
Anon
I have the same issue, except because of my thighs. It’s why I gave up on trousers years ago and exclusively wear dresses. (I wear super stretchy jeans for casual wear, but I don’t own a single pair of work pants.)
OP
Just to clarify, I think the problem I’m having is known colloquially as a “camel toe,” although I’m not totally sure what that means (I saw it being used on this site before). It’s basically like a wedgie, but in the front.
Anonymous
That happens to me with how certain pants are shaped, especially if they are too short in the rise. Losing weight helps a little.
investing
Yup… you just need pants with more generous cuts. Look for curvy lines.
Meg Murry
Losing weight might help a little – or they might just always be pants that are slightly uncomfortable and not a good fit for you. They also might fit ok initially but not be comfortable if you have any kind of post-lunchtime (or post carbonated or caffinated drinks) bloat.
You may be able to see if wearing the pants with Spanx, Jockey Skimmies or the like helps with the issue – but personally I wouldn’t run out to buy a pair if you don’t already have them unless these pants are your favorite thing ever for some reason. I would just chalk them up as a lost cause, try to determine what is different about them from other work pants (shorter rise? Not a stretchy material? Overall smaller? You really need one size up and are trying to make it work? Center seam in an odd place or has lots of extra fabric in the seam?) so you can avoid buying ones like these in the future.
Work shoes
I need a new pair of classic black 3″ pointy toe pumps. Ideally, I want something that I can wear all day, but I am a bit hard on shoes. A very tiny heel will be destroyed quickly. So I need a slightly bigger heel.
Comfort is key, but I prefer a more sleek looking shoe if possible.
clarks
It’s more of an almond toe, but check out the Clarks Tempt Appeal. I have them in nude leather and will be buying the black when my current classic black heels kick the bucket.
No make-up make-up look
Do you wear eyeliner? If so, how do you wear it?
I am trying to look a little more polished at work. For me, this has meant adding something for my aging skin (BB cream), trying to make my eyes pop a bit more (still trying to figure that out, but I think it means eyeliner in addition to my mascara swipe?), and a bit of color on my lips (Burt’s Bees is all I can manage).
Would also love reasonably priced option for an eyeliner that has good staying power. My current drugstore brand wears off in a spotty way over hours and makes my make-up application skills look just as poor… as they are! So far I have been trying to put it over the edge of the top lid, from about 3/4 of the way in to the outer eye edge.
Blonde Lawyer
I love Avon’s eyeliner. Cheap, waterproof, self-sharpening, stays put. I still order from the same lady in my hometown that sold me makeup in middle school. :)
Jitterbug
I love love LOVE Kat Von D tattoo liner, it’s super easy to apply and lasts all day (really, I put it on in the morning before two dance competitions, and it stayed put until I took it off around 3AM after late night dancing). I wear the black liner in a winged look, but I’m toying with getting the brown liner and just lining my top eyelid for a subtle pop.
Cat
I like Clinique’s quickliner for eyes. Unless you’re an eye-rubber (it does smudge easily), it’s super easy to apply, stays put, and comes off easily w/ makeup remover.
Anonymous
+1 for Clinique quickliner. I’m a bit of a makeup fanatic and have tried every eyeliner out there, and this is still my go-to.
Anonymous
I use Rimmel’s gel liner on the top lashline and water-line. It is amazing-lasts all day and looks nice and sharp.
Anonymous
I use Smashbox’s waterproof eyeliners. Otherwise, I find eyeliner smudges onto my lid, which are becoming a little droopy (I’m 49), and the lid comes in contact with my lashline when I look up throughout the day.
If I don’t use waterproof, I end up with a line of eyeliner above my crease.
Hollis
I’ve been using Lancôme Artliner for more than a decade because it works – long lasting, no smudging or raccoon eyes at the end of the day, and easy to use. I tried drugstore brands and also MAC, but end up going back to the Artliner. The rest of my makeup is drugstore so that just tells you how much I like this product.
What kind of BB cream are you using? I haven’t been that happy with any I have tried so far.
Melissa
I use Dr. Jart (the gold tube) and love it. It has SPF 45, medium-light coverage, and I like the texture and feel (not too heavy). Plus as soon as I started using it, I began getting compliments on my skin.
Jules
It’s not cheap – $20 per, I think — but I love Urban Decay 24-hour eyeliner pencils. They are really pretty smudge-proof.
Godzilla
Everybody says this but LIES. NOT FOR MINE MONSTER EYES.
Senior Attorney
I just use dark brown eyeshadow and a very fine expensive angle brush from MAC, I think. I find it much easier than any other kind of eyeliner. I apply it right up against my eyelashes (google “tightlining”).
Parfait
And I use brown, purple, or black eyeshadow and a very cheap angle brush, or sometimes a dampened eyeliner brush. I don’t like the way liner pencils pull at my eyelids, and I find it’s easier to get a soft, blended line this way.
Godzilla
What color are your eyes/skin? Revlon Colorstay and the NYX self-sharpening eyeliners are the best drugstore eyeliners in my opinion, especially with my oily lids (#monsterproblems). For a subtler yet impactful look, you can take a stiff flat brush and sweep dark eyeliner on lash line. You can also set your eyeliner with dark eyeshadow.
Bette
I got the Eyeko Fat Liquid Eyeliner in a recent Birch Box and I love it. I have zero make-up skills and wear the same routine as you (BB cream, eyeliner, mascara, curl my lashes, and then put on lip stick in the car). Lasts all day and doesn’t make a smeary mess when I take it off at night.
Anonymous2
I use Almay liquid eyeliner – never smears and easy to put on. Cheap and hypoallergenic. They have black but I like the copper (with blue eyes) and they have other colors too.
Melissa
Honestly I wrestled with eyeliner for years and was never happy. It took so much work to get it right and always seemed to smudge or disappear by mid day. I started just wearing more mascara and applying it better. Really squiggle in at the lash line then brush out multiple times in all directions (more than you’d think–start with at least 20 per eye). It gives the same effect as eyeliner and is way less work. I also use a eyeshadow crayon. Laura Mercier caviar stick in amethyst is my favorite but Flower and NYX are good drugstore brands.
Hazel
I realized this morning on the train that the fine, shallow lines under my eyes, which I’d always just accepted as “that’s what faces do,” AREN’T there on a lot of my fellow commuters. I’m only 30! I have very oily skin so have always focused on acne care rather than wrinkle solutions, but I think I need to add some under-eye care to my routine. Any suggestions?
Anonymous
Get thee to a dermatologist and get a prescription for Retinol and discuss setting up an am/pm skincare routine, and get product recommendations (for example Vitamin C serums are great for brightening skin and avoiding sun spots; cost an arm and a leg at Sephora, can get dermatologist recommendation for much cheaper options online). Skip paying hundreds for over the counter wrinkle creams that do nothing. Just skip that money pit. But if you must indulge, Sephora has no questioned asked returns, so you can try something and see if your skin agrees with it.
NYNY
Do you squint a lot? Maybe see an eye doctor to find out if you need vision correction.
I realized that my only facial wrinkles so far, little lines above the outer edge of my eyebrows, come from making a “Really?!” face too often. It’s fun to try to match your facial expressions to your wrinkles…
Baconpancakes
It might just be what your face does, actually. I freaked out at 23 when I noticed those lines, and then when I was looking at my 3rd grade school pictures I realized I had those exact lines way back then, too. Check some old photos of yourself and see – it might just be how your face is put together.

Does Ann Taylor’s Canadian site ever do promotions? I notice the 40% off one for today say “US Only.” This makes me very unhappy. Plus (standard) shipping is $37. $37!!!!!!!

I regularly troll that site and I have never seen the sale apply to Canadians online…..wait until you see the duty they tack on as well. I have given up trying to order from any US clothing site. Aunt Flo at the Beach
So I’m leaving for a beach vacation on Friday and just realized my period is due to start the same day! Usually just the first day or two are really heavy and annoying – is there anything I can do to make it start earlier to get the worse of it over before vacation?
Help!
Anonymous
If you’re on the pill you can just start taking the next cycle of active pills without taking the week of placebo pills. That will make you skip your period.
Bluestocking
If you’ve never done this before though, you might experience breakthrough bleeding the first time you try to start a second pack right away. That was my experience the few times I tried to skip a period by starting another pack immediately.
Emmer
Are you on a monophasic birth control pill? If so, you can just start taking your next pack and do the withdrawal week after your vacation. If not, not much you can do. I highly recommend using a Diva Cup though – lasts longer than a tampon and you don’t have to carry products around with you.
Hollis
I’ve heard a lot about this and am curious, but find it somewhat scary. How do you clean the cup in public places? Also, can you sleep with a Diva Cup inside? Does it ever leak?
Emmer
Most women can leave the cup in 12 hours, so I usually don’t have to take it out in public places. If I need to empty it in a public place, I just take it out and dump it in the toilet, then if needed wipe the outside with toilet paper (in other words, you don’t have to wash it off and sanitize multiple times a day). You can absolutely sleep in it! It has never leaked for me, but there is a learning curve to figuring out how to insert it – you need to ensure there is a tight “seal” (i.e., the cup is completely expanded inside of you) or otherwise it will leak. For my first few cycles it took a few minutes’ effort to get it in there right, but after I got the hang of it it’s as easy as putting in a tampon.
BB
I love this thing! It has NEVER leaked for me, but definitely a YMMV situation. It works amazingly for some women and not at all for some. It is way safer to sleep with or leave in accidentally as it is non-porous, so no risk of TSS.
Anonymous
I’m obsessed with my Diva. I’ve never needed to clean it in a public place – I only need to empty it once a day, at night before I go to bed. It doesn’t leak, I barely even notice it’s there. I’ve been using the same cup for nearly 10 years and only used a tampon ONCE during that time (when I started my period unexpectedly and didn’t have it with me). Imagine never spending money on tampons or pads ever again!
Hollis
Do you wear it only during heavy bleeding, or also in the beginning and end of your period? How do you normally wash it off at home? Do you ever need to replace it or can you use the same one for years? It sounds incredibly messy to me, especially with clots and stuff, but it sounds like you ladies are big fans.
Anonymous
I wear it during my whole period. My period isn’t abnormally heavy, but the cup holds a lot more than a tampon. I think the Diva website says the cup can last 10 years. It’s silicone, so it has a long shelf life.
When I need to empty it, I just take it out, empty it into the toilet, wash it with soap and water, and put it back in. It’s really not that messy at all. If you’re grossed out by blood or you think genitals are icky, I guess it can seem gross and messy. I don’t think it’s a big deal at all.
Anonymous
I wear it throughout. Since having kids my period is very, very heavy at first, so I use it with a pad so that I can go 4-8 hrs without having to mess with anything. For the rest, I wear it alone (usually with a pantyliner as insurance) and only change it when I wake and before I go to sleep.
I wash it twice a day with mild soap and hot water. If I do need to empty it away from home or in a rush, I just dump and wipe with toilet paper.
Since everything stays in the cup, it’s really not very messy. I wipe my fingers with some toilet paper on the heavy days after inserting it, but that’s all. Overall, I find it’s actually less messy than pads or tampons in the garbage can.
I love it. I can essentially ignore my period except for twice a day when it’s convenient.
Alanna of Trebond
Love love love the Diva Cup. Have worn it at the beach and the pool with no issues.

I don’t know about starting earlier or getting it over with, but Ibuprofen can lessen the flow and pain level by quite a bit (the google tells me 20%-40% less bledding) – as long as you don’t otherwise have a reason not to take it (bad reaction in the past, etc), I would start taking the maximum amount allowed on the bottle (with food, don’t give yourself an ulcer) either Thursday night or whenever your cramps start to be more than a twinge.
If you are worried about being uncomfortable in the car or on the plane, and you aren’t already running hot, the stick on heat pads (link below, or the ones meant for back pain) can make a huge difference, taking me from “I’m so miserable, I want to curl up in a ball and cry for the next 24 hours” to “Ok, I’m uncomfortable but I can deal”.
Eliza
There’s not much you can realistically do to bring it on early, but to decrease flow, I’ve found Lysteda to be a lifesaver. You take it as soon as you notice bleeding, and it decreases flow substantially. It’s a prescription so you’ll have to see (maybe just a phone call?) your dr, but it’s worth the effort. Good stuff.
6th anniversary ideas
Any fun and/or s*xy anniversary gifts out there? Apparently the 6th year is iron and candy… so I am already planning on going for “iron” hand cuffs. Just looking for tips. What do you do when your life feels like its falling apart and you have to be at work for 8 hours? Taking time off isn’t an option… other than trying to hide the tears and frequent bathroom breaks?

Taking regular breaks that involve walking. Even if it means just to get a drink of water, and then later, to pee it out. Physically moving, at a brisk walk sometimes lightens my mind.
